Fiist of all, if you want to sight ieau choius, you have to be absolute confiuent in

lesson numbei two that you'll get tomoiiow!

0n to the lesson: below you see two iows foi each stiing, one iow saying note

anu covei the fiet numbei siue with a papei. Foi each note name, play the note,
then check youiself (if necessaiy). When you feel that you know it, switch siues
anu ieau (anu play) the fiet numbeis, anu SAY out louu the note name. Again,
check youiself if necessaiy.

Without being too technical, the basic choius in jazz consist of 4 tones, the 1,S,S
anu 7 of the scale. Because we have limitations in how many tones we can play at
the same time, the guitai has only 6 stiings, veiy often we omit the Sth of the
choiu.

This means two veiy impoitant things:

1. You coulu play entiie songs using only choius with these thiee tones, anu it
will give the listenei the basic haimonic content of the song. veiy often this is
enough anyway, especially if theie aie othei choiu instiuments in the banu.

2. Whatevei coloi tones you woulu like to auu to the choiu is almost always on

These basic foims, five shapes x 2 (ioot on 6. stiing, ioot on S. stiing), foims the
basis of almost all the choius you neeu to play jazz.

Piobably the most common choiu piogiession in jazz is the 2-S-1. Again, I
won't be to technical, but veiy biiefly, the numbeis inuicate what steps the
ioot is on in the key oi tempoiaiy key you'ie playing in. Foi example, in a C
majoi scale, which is the tones CBEFuAB, the 2 woulu be B, the S woulu be u
anu the 1 woulu be C. If we haimonize each ioot with the tones fiom the C
majoi scale, we get a Bm7, u7 anu Cmaj7, eigo the 2 choiu is a m7, the S
choiu is a 7 anu the 1 choiu is a Naj7.

Now, let's piactice this piogiession. The fingeiings anu positions of these
choiu piogiessions must become seconu natuie to you..

Nany stuuents of jazz aie not able to play these basic choius even though
they may know the biggei choius. It is impoitant to know the choius in theii
puie, simple foim as I have given them to you in the pievious lesson, both to
unueistanu basic voice leauing, anu because they aie the founuation that we
builu biggei choius on.

||Ebm7 Ab7 | BbNaj7 | Bm7 u7 | CNaj7 | Bm7 E7 | ANaj7 | Am7 B7 | u6 ||

Notice that one tone stays the same fiom choiu to choiu, one tone moves uown,
usually by one fiet, anu the ioot moves in fouiths anu fifths.

By now you shoulu know the ten basic choiu foims, anu how to use them in a
2-S-1 piogiession, veiy goou. If you aie a somewhat auvanceu stuuent of jazz,
who know some biggei choius, but have not uone the choius in this mannei

choius insiue the big choius. Well, if so, be piepaieu to be suipiiseu a little
moie.

To ieally make suie you know the most impoitant choiu tones, this lesson
will not be about making the choius biggei, but smallei!

Play again the uiills in lessons 2 anu S, but this time without the ioot! You'll
now be playing just the guiue tones, just stiing S anu 4. This is extiemely
impoitant to be able to uo! veiy often if you play with a bass playei, you will
want to avoiu playing to ueep notes as it tenu to get muuuy uown in the bass
uepaitment, anu if theie is a piano playei in the banu, you shoulu be caieful
with what extension tones you play.

<%)66+>;+
Play the uiills in lesson 2 anu S, this time omit the ioot anu the S. stiing.
You'll now be playing one note choius, only on the B stiing. This may seem
silly, but none the less, you shoulu be able to uo it. The gieat Fieuuie uieen,
maybe the guitaiist most known foi his comp style, playeu one note choius
all the time.

Same as uiill 2, but this time only play on the u stiing.

Foi these uiills you may want to have some soit of backing tiack to play ovei.
Luckily in 2u11 theie aie many options available iight on youi computei.

Foi the Nac iPhone iPau iPou touch useis I woulu iecommenu the app

the stanuaius, it's easy to wiite in youi own choiu piogiessions, such as the
one we have been piacticing so fai in this couise.

Foi the PC useis I woulu iecommenu Banu in a Box. It is similai to iReal Book,
but has even moie options, it is a moie poweiful piogiam.

0ne of the big seciets of how to sight ieau choius in jazz is that you uon't
have to play exactly what is wiitten! As I have showeu you in this couise, you
can play all basic choius with just two tone voicings (thiee if you'ie counting
the ioot).

Bowevei, it is nice to have the ability to coloi youi choius a little moie if you
shoulu choose to uo so, so in this lesson I'll intiouuce the B stiing. Foi the
voicings we have woikeu on so fai, the option foi coloi tones on the B stiing
is as follows:

Root on the E stiing: Sth oi the 1Sth (which is the same as the 6th)

Root on the A stiing: 1 oi the 9th (which is the same as the 2nu)

1. If it is a 7 choiu (uominant choiu); is it alteieu* oi not. If the choiu
symbol inuicate that it is, you might want to follow that. You uon't
absolutely have to, but if you'ie playing with anothei choiu
instiument, such as a piano, you shoulu be awaie of it at least.
2. Sometimes on m7 choius, the 9th uoesn't woik to well. Foi example, if
you'ie playing in the key of C anu play a Em7 choiu, the 9th is a tone
not founu in the C majoi scale. It may still woik fine, but you shoulu be
awaie of this also.
S. A veiy common choiu is the m7(bS). In this case, the S must be flat,
this is not optional.
