Problem Statement
Design, develop and test an ABS

system for a mountain bike

ABS

Antiskid Braking System

Criteria

Wheels do not lock when braking

Steering capabilities are maintained
Some braking at all times
Low weight
Low cost
No electronic controls
Braking distance not compromised

Concept

Wheel skid occurs when frictional forces

between brake and wheel are greater than the
forces between the tire and ground
Loss of steering, possible danger to cyclist
Modern ABS systems use wheel speed sensors

Design
Mechanical system to detect

and prevent wheel slippage

System will release brake
pressure between brake pad
and wheel rim
When wheel slip not
detected brakes operate
normally

Patent Research

Four patents related to bicycle ABS were found.

All current designs reduce brake force regardless
of wheel lock up.
Wheel lock up may occur depending on
environmental conditions. (Rain, dew, gravel,
grass, etc.)

Patent Cable Spring Design

Design

Our design takes wheel lock into account.

The rotational movement of the wheel is
transferred into linear movement of the brake
pads.
The system has the following components:
Actuator clutch, and a slip clutch
Ratcheting cable drum
Chain/sprocket drive
