By Bill & Barbara Long
Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo WIN!!
A/ Sam Rayburn Saturday Series Championship
October 29-30, 2011 - Anglers Quest 2011 Sam Rayburn Saturday Series Championship is now in
the books, and the Saturday Series for Sam Rayburn is complete for 2011. The event began on Friday
evening at The Stump Restaurant & Club with the presentation of the special Anglers Quest Goal
Post to the 3rd year in a row Anglers of the Year, Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo. The Calcutta Auctions
at all A/Q events has been replaced with the old tried & true Side Pot and the Side Pot raised $4000.00
to add to the anglers pot.
The weather was clear and not much wind on Saturday with mid 40s at daybreak to low 70s
during the day for the event on Sam Rayburn. Sunday was a little blustery with lots of sunshine all
day long. As the event got underway with the 22 qualifed teams taking off into the dim morning light
from their ramp of choice at 7:05 am, the anglers were all going for the $14,245.00 purse that was the
payback by Anglers Quest at this Championship event. The water at Sam Rayburn was approximately
13.5 ft below normal pool level. At the end of day 1 the 22 teams brought in 17 limits of bass, 96 fsh
that totaled 223.65 lbs with a 2.32 avg. At the end of day 2 the 22 teams brought in 31 limits of bass,
176 fsh that totaled 411.51 lbs with a 2.33 average. All East Texas lakes have very low water levels and
it makes launching boats and navigating the waterways very hazardous for all the anglers. Very few
launch ramps are still useable on the lakes.
After the 2 full days of competition the Tiremax team of Ricky Guy from Humble, TX & Larry Cotten
from Huffman, TX ran Rickys Tiremax wrapped Bowden Marine prepared BassCat/Evinrude to north
lake areas and brought in 10 bass at 24.20 lbs to claim 6th place. They took home $345.00 for their
day on the water.
The team of Phillip Crelia & Blaine Abshire from Center, TX took their bass rig to an area on the
north end and came to the scales with 10 bass at 24.53 lbs to give them a 5th place fnish. Phillip &
Blaine reported catching all their bass throwing Texas rigged worms. They did end up going home
with $600.00 for their 2 days on the water.
The father & son team of Bob Vote & Andy Vote from Kingwood, TX ran Bobs Ranger bass rig to
areas on the southwest end of the lake. They were using their rods & Shimano reels spooled with
fuorocarbon line to throw spooks around brush & grass and came to the scales with 10 bass at 24.98
lbs to give them a 4th place fnish and collected $800.00 in the regular pot and another $400.00 in the
Rusty Clark and Cory Rambo won 1st place for
Big Bass with an 8.98 lber, anchoring their two
day total of 37.51 lbs to win the Championship
Rusty Clark and Cory Rambo won 1st place in the Anglers Quest Saturday Series Rayburn
Championship, and for the third year in a row additionally won Anglers of the Year!
Tobe Prescott Jr
caught the second
largest single bass
of the two day event
weighing 6.29 lbs to
win a check for $450.

Where Will Seasons First
Toyota ShareLunker Be Caught?
Only the sound of running water flls the Lunker Bunker at
the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. The 22 round, 1,500-
gallon ShareLunker holding tanks are ready to receive fsh.
So far none have arrived.
The Toyota ShareLunker season starts October 1 and runs
through April 30 because Texas is so large that the spawning
season stretches over many months. Over the 25-year history of
the program, six 13-pound or bigger fsh have been entered into
the program in October, nine in November and 20 in December.
In a typical season, the action really picks up after the frst of
the year. There have been 55 entries in January, 119 in February,
224 in March and 85 in April.
October entries have come pinball-machine fashion from
all over the statefrom Lake McQueeney near San Antonio to
Toledo Bend on the Louisiana border to Lake Fork in Northeast
Texas to Lake Meredith in the Panhandle.
Things start to settle down in November, with six of the
months nine entries coming from Lake Fork, one from the
Nueces River, one from Lake Lewisville and one from a private
pond in Anderson County. And one of those, Mark Stevensons
17.67-pound monster from Lake Fork, was ShareLunker No. 1
and remains the biggest bass reported caught on an artifcial
lure in Texas.
Surprisingly, more southerly Texas lakes like Falcon and
Amistad have not been heard from until December. Lake Fork
leads the December catch pack with seven entries followed by
Falcon and Conroe with three each. But the pinball effect still
shows up, with entries from Baylor Creek near Childress, O.H.
Ivie near San Angelo, Amistad near Del Rio, Ray Hubbard near
Dallas and Sam Rayburn and Nacogdoches in East Texas.
The pattern seems to be that there is no pattern, at least as far
as location is concerned. But one thing is clear: The frst Toyota
ShareLunker of the 2011-2012 season is out there somewhere
waiting to be caught.
You would look good wearing the Toyota ShareLunker shirt
and jacket and G. Loomis cap holding a fberglass replica of a
big bass. Why dont you go catch that frst ShareLunker?
Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth
bass from Texas waters, public or private, between October 1 and
April 30 may submit the fsh to the Toyota ShareLunker program
by calling program manager David Campbell at (903) 681-0550
or paging him at (888) 784-0600 and leaving a phone number
including area code. Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel
within 12 hours.
ShareLunker entries are used in a selective breeding program
at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens. Some
of the offspring from these fsh are stocked back into the water
body from which they were caught. Other ShareLunker offspring
are stocked in public waters around the state in an attempt to
increase the overall size and growth rate of largemouth bass in
Texas.
Anglers entering fsh into the Toyota ShareLunker program
receive a free replica of their fsh, a certifcate and ShareLunker
clothing and are recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater
Fisheries Center in Athens.
The person who catches the seasons largest entry will be
named Angler of the Year. If a Texas angler catches the largest
entry of the season, that person also receives a lifetime fshing
license.
For complete information and rules of the ShareLunker
program, tips on caring for big bass, a list of offcial Toyota
ShareLunker weigh and holding stations and a recap of last
years season, see www.tpwd.state.tx.us/sharelunker. The site
also includes a searchable database of all fsh entered into the
program along with pictures where available.
Information on current catches, including short videos
of interviews with anglers when available, is posted on www.
facebook.com/sharelunkerprogram.
The Toyota ShareLunker Program is made possible by
a grant to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation from
Gulf States Toyota. Toyota is a long-time supporter of the
Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,
providing major funding for a wide variety of education, fish,
parks and wildlife projects.

Bud Light Fall Team Jasper Tournament on November 5

Harold Allen and Albert Collins once again took home the title of frst place at the Bud Light Fall

the only big numbers for the day, Todd Castledine weighed in a bag totaling 19.44 lbs with a 6.68 lbs big

monster sack of the day.
The frst weigh in of the day was by the team of Jerrel Pringle and Keith Keece and were an instant
front leader, and pick for winner with their 17.75 lbs sack. They held the lead until Castledine, who fshed
without a partner that day, came carrying his catch in. Overall, the sacks were much heavier than they
have been in this tournament trail in a very long time with over half weighing in over 11 lbs.

Only 20 anglers made it back to the weigh-in but total pounds for the day totaled 272.18 lbs; perhaps
the big bass thought they were safe because it was opening day for deer season? No matter, some big fsh
were defnitely brought in and all released to be caught another day.
Winners Allen and Collins said, we were fshing wooded areas on drop-offs and mid-lake ledges, we had
a slow morning but it really picked up in the afternoonwe were throwing E2 Lizards and E2 Doodlebugs.
Strike King Creature Bait, Vicious Line, Hi-Power Rods, and Sixth Sense are sponsors of the team.
Second place Todd Castledine was, fshing grassy areas with a StrikePro Flapjack in a new shad color
called smoothI had a pretty steady day and caught about 40 fsh all together including some swimming
with a Kicker Fish craw Castledine is sponsored by Strike Pro, Legend, Mercury, Kicker Fish, HydroWave,
Hummingbird, Combat Lures, and Power Pole. Castledine also brought home the title of second place Big Bass.
Danny Iles took home the title of Big Bass for his 7.56 lbs big fsh and ended up in eighth overall in the
standings for the day. Both Castledine and Iles fshed alone for the day as their partners were unable to
make it to the tournament and both brought in the two biggest fsh in the tournament.
The next fall team tournament for the Jasper Division will be on December 10 at the
Umphrey Pavilion. More information and contacts for the tournaments can be found at

Bebber and Caka win BL State Team Championship
on Sam Rayburn with nearly a 20 lb margin!
By Jodie Warner
The Bud Light Fall State Team Championship was held on Lake Sam Rayburn on November 12 and
13 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. The tournament invited the top 50 percent from all other regional
team tournaments to participate; however only 58 teams showed up to fsh. The reason for the poor
turn out could probably be blamed on the low lake levels and the handful of open boat ramps that are
left.
Charles Bebber and Keith Caka cast their frst lines on Saturday morning at 6:20 am and by 7:30
am had returned to the BLT weigh station at Umphrey Pavilion with a huge sack of fsh. The guys only
fshed 25 minutes and caught a stringer weighing a total of 37.27 lbs with a 10.01 lbs big fsh! Caka
said, We fshed with a Sixth Sense deep diving crank bait prototype in 28 feet and throwing about
7 feet. He also said that they fshed ledges on the frst day and we had all our fsh in 25 minutes,
they [the fsh] just happened to be there, it was unbelievable. Caka also said that they had a tougher
second day and eventually moved to fshing more grassy areas.
1. 57.58 lbs Charles Bebber and Keith Caka
2. 39.03 lbs David Curtis and Butch Carmack
3. 36.76 lbs Harold Allen and Albert Collins
4. 34.35 lbs Billy Ferguson and Sonny Booth
5. 32.56 lbs Clayton Boulware and Chris McCall
6. 32.30 lbs Bruce Anderson and John Anderson
7. 32.11 lbs Darold Gleason and Kevin Jeane
8. 29.98 lbs Jeff and Tyler Fisher
9. 29.37 lbs Larry Vick and Dwain Burns
10. 28.71 lbs Philip Crelia and Dennis Permentor

Bebber and Caka may have had a slower second day, but their bag was nothing to balk at, for day
two they brought in a total of 20.31 lbs with a 9.12 lbs big fsh giving them a two day total of 57.58
lbs and in the end, an 18 lbs lead over the competition. The duo won a Legend Alpha 191 with a 200
horsepower Mercury motor, a $52,000 value. They also won $470 and a Navionics Chip (worth $150)
bringing their total take home at $52,620 worth of cash and prizes. As always, we want to thank God
for being our #1 sponsor. Their other sponsors that keep them running smooth include: Tiremax, Big
Bite Baits, Costa, Seaguar, Power Pole, MinnKota and Humminbird.
David Curtis and Butch Carmack took home second place for the two day tournament with a day
one stringer of 21.24 lbs and day two stringer of 17.79 lbs for a total of 39.03 lbs. Curtis and Carmack
took home $1,600 for their weekends fshing. A familiar set of faces to the Bud Light Trail took home
the third place spot. Harold Allen and Albert Collins won third place with a two day total of 36.76 lbs;
they won $1,300.
Randall and Julie May took home the overall second largest big bass with a 9.12 lb fsh in their day
one sack and took home an American Rodsmiths Rod.
The tournament paid out the top fve places and two big bass awards. Its safe to say that there are
still plenty of big fsh in Lake Sam Rayburn, and although the water levels may not be friendly to boats
it is certainly an opportunity for anglers to catch some record-breaking fsh.
Total results and more information about the tournament series for next year can be found at

The A-Rig, oR beTTeR yeT
The TRi-LAkes Rig!
By Andrew Upshaw, Tri Lakes Tackle
The Texas rig has been around a long time. So has the Mississippi rig and several others. Theres a
new rig in town that many of you may not yet have heard of yet, so I thought Id write about it. It the
Alabama rig.
The Alabama rig consists of 5 wires creating an Umbrella Shape behind a weight. What is attached
to these wires is the crazy part. Most put 5 swimbaits rigged either with an open jig head or weedless
style. This may seem a little like overkill but many anglers have fgured out how to utilize them to win
tournaments. I bet many of you can think back to a situation you have been in where this type of rig
would be successful; I know I can numerous times. What could be better than having a whole school of
minnows swimming though a giant school of bass? What could be better than catching your limit on
one cast? Its possible now.
So with the Alabama rig I began to think of all the possibilities with this System of lures. First
off, I would like to say my Dad and his fellow employees, or as I call them the Three Stooges, are
some genius people. My dad and a couple of buddies decided to make their very own rig deemed the
Tri-Lakes Rig. This rig may seem similar to some of the other companies, but these guys pay so close
attention to detail that its crazy. I know all of you remember how particular some companies were to
make a good Chatterbait knock off. Well, these guys did it with the A-Rig. They have fgured out how to
make your rig last, and not wear out the weight, by using a special weight that doesnt bend like lead.
Secondly they cover all the components with a special material so that it will snake through the grass
better. For everyone that has seen it or used it, they have all absolutely loved it. My Dad and his buddies
pay so close attention to detail that it drives me crazy, but this is also why I have worked with them
designing other variations of the A-Rig. We now have 3 different variations to the Original Tri-Lakes Rig.
Tri-Lakes Chase-Her Rig: This variation of the original Tri-Lakes Rig goes a step further. This
rig allows you to utilize up to 7 hooked swimbaits! This also allows you to have a smaller school of
swimbaits chasing your big swimbaits. It is very unique and best of all it increases the size of Bait Fish
School that you can create, which in return helps you catch even more! You could even add a couple
of Strike Pro Flap Jacks to the back of the chaser to add more sound and vibration, but make sure you
upgrade those trebles to Owner ST-41s or you will get your feelings hurt!
Tri-Lakes Ultimate Drop Shotter: This is defnitely my favorite rig that Tri-lakes has made,
because I had a full hand in the design. This rig allows you to drop shot up to 4 worms at a time! What
this rig will allow you to do is tie a leader at the bottom with the weight attached; just in case the weight
hangs up you dont lose your rig. I feel this rig will help in those cases where fsh are stacked on one
little spot on a drop off or ledge. I would use this after I had already fred the school up with a single
hook drop shot. This rig would also allow you to test all kinds of different drop shot worms to fgure out
which the fsh like best.
Tri-Lakes Cranker Baiter: When you didnt think you could get more complex; here you go.
Another one of my designs, but I will be honest we havent done extensive feld testing on it. I still
feel it is amazing. It consists of 3 wires and a weight that allows you to throw 3 Strike Pro Warmouth
Wobblers and get to cranking. You will need a big rod with it that has a little tip to it and I would
upgrade the treble hooks to an Owner St-41; which is a heavy wire treble. I would not use the rig to
search for fsh, but more to the fsh that you have already found on one specifc place on a ridge or
ledge. This rig could revolutionize the crankbait industry.
Now I know I have talked a lot about Tri-Lakes Tackles ways they make these rigs, but I am here to
tell you that many other companies are doing it right too. However right now Tri-Lakes is the only one
selling and producing these! It makes me so happy to see my Dad and all his patrons working together
to make it in these tuff times! Thanks also to The Lakecaster for having such a great newspaper. If you
would like to order any of these please either e-mail your orders in to trilakestackle@yahoo.com or call
936.637.7119! I know he also sells all available Rigs that he produces to other Tackle Stores. Retail is
$19.99 for the Original Tri-Lakes Rig! The others are being fgured out as we speak!

Lakes and
Low Water
Can you fsh a lake when its low? Sure, just treat it
with respect and remember to check the water levels
frequently. First lets see how it affects the fshing on
the lake. Basically there is less water for the fsh to
hide in. That is one way to look at it. The low water
level lets us see lots of structure that is normally
underwater, and that can be a bonus. If you have been
on the lake before, keep in mind that you may not be
able to run where you have in the past. Treat it like its
a new lake. Get a map with some good contour lines
and study it. If you need to take a marker and color
all the areas that should be out of water in red, then
color the next few ft in yellow. Dont run in shallow
water, stay in the deepest water you can when youre
running and dont take short cuts. Weve all seen what
happens when someone takes a short cut and fnds
a foundation in 4 ft of water that they havent seen
before. Treat the lakes like they are new and do your
home work. Start from the beginning. Dont run blind.
Try to follow someone that is running though timber
or shallow water until you learn what that area is like
and if there are any obstacles.
Years ago I fshed a lot of different lakes in South
Texas. We would a get a map and go fshing and never
even think about seeing what the lake level was. I can
remember a trip where we left the dock right at sunset
to fsh a hump out in the middle of the south end of
the lake. The hump was setting in 20ft of water and
comes up to 12 ft, a perfect place to catch some good
fsh. We were lucky to have a map and cheap depth
fnder and thats it. GPS was not even heard of for
fshing boats. With our running lights on we busted out
there to about where we fgured it would be and slowed
down. It was dark, so when we picked up the spot light
and looked around, we found ourselves in the middle
of timber. We were lucky that we didnt hit anything.
Those old boats didnt foat worth a fip by themselves
back then. That was a lesson that I will never forget.
Did I mention the lake was 10 ft low at the time?
Dont stay home and miss out on the fall fshing.
Low water levels are just something we have to deal
with, and you can bet it will not be the last time. Get
out and learn the lake and become a better fsherman.
The fall fshing is just starting to get good. The fsh
will become even more active as the water gets cooler,
so break out the rods, get some new line on, and get
out there.

December can be some of the best
fshing. There are lots of days that are
just gorgeous with cool temperatures
in the morning then warming in the
afternoon. There will be a lot of fsh
chasing shad up and down the banks.
One of the best things to do this time of
year is to cover a lot of water. Two baits
that do a good job are the Stanley spinner
bait and the Rat-L-Trap. Chunkin and
windin is the key to covering a lot of
water looking for active fsh. Using
crankbaits off the points and then
working them back along the edges into
the pockets can pick up some nice fsh.
Dont forget about using a Texas and
Carolina rig off the steeper drops. Some
of the big fsh will pull up and hold till
they get active chasing food. Also dont
forget the Football jig- off the ledges
and creek channels can be hard to beat.
Stay on your toes, some of the bites will
be very light. A twitch of the line could
be all you get out of that lunker fsh as
she sucks it in then drops it. All you may
feel is that thump on the line. Dont get
caught sleeping this time of year as the
big girls move up.
I was thinking about fshing, and
thats when it hit me. Christmas is a time
of giving to others. As I was thinking
about what to get everyone I decided to
ask for a Christmas list from them so I
could have a few things to choose from.
Then I was asked to make a list. Thats a
big can of worms to open. As they set out
to make me a list, I started to make mine
for them. I think getting things that you
will use and enjoy is the best. My list is all
about FISHIN . So I eased out to the boat
to take a look at all the tackle in there
to see what I needed. A few of my boxes
havent been open in sometime and its
easy to see that a few of my baits have
turned into a gummy mess. Age does
that. Replacing them now would be a
good idea because good fshing is just
around the corner. My list starts off with
spinner baits, Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits,
new hooks and the top secret baits from
my local tackle stores like Bass Strike
Tackle and Tri Lakes Tackle. Stop by,
pick up a few baits, and see whats new
out there. Its an easy way to stay on top
of the game. Dont forget them during
the holiday season. I know they thank
everyone that stops by and wish everyone
a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Remember the Sharelunker Program
entries started on October 1 and run
thru April 30th. If you havent heard,
it encourages anglers who catch a
13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend
or donate it to the TPWD for spawning
purposes. There are some great benefts
doing this and one of them is that the
angler receives a fberglass replica of
the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at

The Crappie are normally moving up
the river this time of year but with little
rain fall that may not be the case. They
may hang around a little longer. There
should be a few hanging around the
bridges and brush piles and live bait has
been the best. Good luck.
I want to thank my sponsors and
many friends that have helped make
this a great year: Stanley Jigs, American
Rodsmiths, E2 Bait Company, Strike Pro
Lures and BassCat, Terry and Connie at
Jackson Hill Park and Marina, Jerry and
Glenda at Bass Strike Tackle, Bowden
Marine and Larry and guys at Tri Lake
Tackle. I also want to thank everyone for
coming out and fshing with me. I hope
you have a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year. See you all in 2012!
I know this is a fshing report, but we
have seen some nice deer taken this year.
You can ask Dickie Newberry who shot a
nice deer with his bow. Way to go Dickie,
not only does he bring in big fsh, but
now big deer.
Just because its deer season dont give
up on the fsh. The lake is not as crowded
and the fshing is good. If you can get in
the water and fsh ahead of a front you
will have a good day of fshing.
The bass are hitting June Bug and
Red Bug Texas rigged worms in about
4-6 feet of water. Crankbaits such as
the Strike Pro Hunchback in bone and
chartreuse, black ice and pink-a-licious
are working very well. Mrs. Ann at Anns
Tackle said she has both sizes and all
colors in stock.
Crappie have been doing good in brush
in about 18-20 ft. of water, minnows
are working the best. The crappie are
starting to move out to the river, you
can locate them with your depth fnder.
Dont forget to look around the timber
that you can see standing now in deep
water near the river.
Catfsh can be found in the river
channels. You can throw out your
favorite chum and catch some cats. If
you are not sure where to go or you are
just looking for a fun fshing trip for
catfsh give our friend Gary McDonald
a call at Grays Catfsh Connection.
(409)594-4496.
Mike and I hope everyone has a Merry
Christmas!

TREE SERVICE
AND STUMP GRINDING
By Cathy Wheatley
Legacy and Tradition
the trail to Super Ls First Deer
At MC Outdoor Adventures Mike and I have the opportunity to see a lot of big deer and big fsh
taken by customers. Dont get me wrong, I get just as excited as the customer. But when I get the
chance to hunt with someone I love, its the best.
David (my cousin), his wife Emelie, Kristen, Lauren (Super L) and Matthew came to visit Mike
and I at Sam Rayburn. It was getting close to deer season and we were shooting off the porch with
our bows. (Ok, you are a redneck when the backyard is full shooting decoys!) While David and I were
shooting, the kids were shooting BB guns and small kids bows. We were all having a ball. I noticed
Lauren was very competitive.
Emelie told me Super L loves to go with her dad to his duck lease hunting or just being in the
outdoors. In the morning before school she will watch the outdoor channel. We are in trouble now. By
the way Super L is only 10.
At Christmas we planned a hunt for David and Super L. David was going to shoot a buck and Super
L would take a doe. Well, hunting is hunting and the weather and the deer were not very cooperative.
We did not get a deer for Christmas but Super L was not discouraged. We set a date for next year.
Super L really wanted to take a deer with a bow but she was not able to pull a compound bow back
yet. David gave her a Horton youth cross bow for her birthday. She practiced several times a week
getting ready for her hunt.
The time for the hunt was fnally here. I dont know who was more excited - me, David, or Super
L. David came up early on Thursday to take his buck and Super L would be up after school on Friday.
David and I sat Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. We did not see a good management buck, but
we had time.
Saturday morning no one had to wake Super L up. When we got up, she already was up and ready
to go hunting. As we sat in the stand waiting for daylight I noticed Super L was the perfect bowhunter.
Very quiet, no movement, and always watching the deer. We had a lot of deer come out that morning.
When the feeder went off Super L got her cross bow up and ready. We had talked about letting the deer
get into position and making sure it was quartering away. Super L had the old sister in her sights at 18
yards. I gave her the thumbs up and it felt like it took forever before she shot. When she shot the arrow
hit perfect. The old sister only went 45 yards. I dont know who was more excited, dad, Super L or me.
Dads turn came that afternoon after some fack from Super (Killer) L about her getting the frst
deer. As we sat in the stand all 3 of us, I thought not many dads would let their 10 year old daughter
sit in a stand while trying to shoot a buck with a bow.
We had several very good deer come in. Some too big, too young or an old sister all within 15 to 25
yards. Then walks in the perfect 10 pt. He was standing about 24 yds. Once again the perfect shot was
made, and the buck only went about 50 yds. I was as proud as if I had shot these two deer myself. I am
looking forward to many more hunts with Killer L and David.
At only 10 years old, Lauren (Super L) has a love and passion for the outdoors.
Here is her frst deer she shot with a bow.
With love and patience, David is passing the traditions of hunting to his kids.
He got this nice 10 pt while hunting with his daughter.

In an event like this, everyone wins
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I just wanted to send a special thank you for all the support you
provided for the 1st Annual Patriots Challenge Fundraiser Fishing
Tournament. This event was a real success. Without you and your
generosity, it would not have been possible to put this on. Take a
look at some of the photos.
The frst photo shows a wounded warrior Kevin Burgin US
Army, who lost an eye in Iraq. Kevin is currently working as the
Wounded Warrior Liason for the US Army Corps of Engineers. He is
with Terry Sympson, the Owner/Operator of Jackson Hill Park and
Marina. Terry and his wife Connie do a lot of community service
activities in the area.
The second photo shows everyone enjoying an evening meal.
Note the special decorations all around.
The third photo shows the dedication of a new fag to honor and
remember fallen soldiers. This fag has been adopted by nine states
and is currently being considered in Texas and the US Congress
as a new National Symbol of Gratitude and Respect. It was frst
presented at the Jasper Veterans Day Memorial and was frst fown
in East Texas at Jackson Hill Marina Saturday morning. The
soldiers presenting the fag are Buck Collins and Chuck Williams
who met while rehabbing from traumatic brain injuries received
while fghting the War on Terror. Robert Buck Collins was
honored earlier in the day for his heroic service to our country.

Last but not least is a group photo.
Everyone had a great time and lots of new friendships were started at the event.

Keeping Anglers Informed
WINTERIZE YOUR FISHING RIG and
Winter Patterns That Work
by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
WINTERIZE THAT BOAT
Hello, Anglers. If you are like numerous
boaters/fshermen in this neck of the woods, you
may not plan to fsh or use your boat anymore
until after hunting season is over early 2012.
Unless you plan to fsh all through the winter,
here are some tips that will make things a lot
better when you do decide to put your boat back
on the lake next spring. The frst thing I would
suggest is to fll-up your gas tanks and add an
additive/fuel stabilizer to fuel. Many boaters
are now using additives anyway to counter the
impacts of ethanol but make sure you use it this
winter if you store your rig for several months.
Another reminder is to make sure all batteries are
fully charged before storage as storing a depleted
battery cuts down on the life span.
In addition, it is very critical to store boat
motor tilted all the way down so lower unit is
in a position allowing all water to run out of
unit preventing lower gear case from freezing/
expanding/cracking causing a major repair bill.
Insurance policies do not cover such damage as
this is described as owner neglect. New lower
units range from $400-$700 on small engines
to $3,000 to $4,000 on large models. Also, make
sure you check or change the oil in the lower
unit before storage in case there is water in the
crankcase causes by a leaking seal.
Another major problem we have in this area is
mildew which can also be very costly. It is a good
idea to go through all boat compartments and
check for moisture. If you have a compartment
that is prone to moisture you might want to
remove any valuable item and store in a dry,
protected area. In a matter of days with right
conditions, mildew will ruin a $100 life jacket or
a $300 rain suit. These mentioned winter boat
reminders are also applicable to those of us who
use our boats all winter. We must especially be
vigilant concerning draining water out of lower
unit after each use. Each winter there are boaters/
anglers who fail to do this and the outcome is not
pretty when you have to fork out big bucks just
when the bass start tearing it up in the spring.
Drain that water out of the lower unit!!
WINTER FISHING PATTERNS
I have had some great fshing trips in
December. This winter on Toledo could even be
more productive than normal because of record-
low water drought conditions and lake is down
13 feet, hence, concentrating the fsh population.
As far as patterns, water temperatures are in
lower 60s/upper 50s and we are fshing a lot of
crankbaits, TX rigs, slow-rolling spinnerbaits
as well as Stanley Football (Bug-eye) jigs. In
addition, on the mid and southern portions
of Toledo, the water is normally very clear
which lends itself beautifully to a lot of vertical
presentations with jigging spoons and drop shot
rigs. I have been a fan of jigging spoons for 20-25
years and have used them on south Toledo to
catch thousands of bass in cold weather.
For most situations, I use a custom made
spoon which is about 5/8 of an ounce and attach
a #4 Daiichis Death Trap treble hook. This is a
very high carbon hook and is super sharp which
is vital in jigging a spoon. A jigging spoon is
nothing but a slab of lead with a treble hook
attached. However, when this is lowered into the
depths of a deep, clear lake and bounced off the
bottom, it can become a very effective tool for
catching fsh. I catch most of my spoon fsh in
depths of 25 to 40 feet. I have caught them as
deep as 55 feet but 33-38 feet is where I fsh most
of them.
Merry Christmas and Gods Blessings on your
friends and Family.....and....Keep Praying for
RAIN!

Liberty County Game Warden Adam
Broll received a call Oct. 16 from a
Keneck police ofcer regarding a
vehicle he had pulled over. The ofcer
noted blood and hair on the tailgate
and in searching the vehicle found
two .22 cal. ries, a spotlight, and
three deer antlers. The driver admitted
shooting three white-tailed deer the
night of Oct. 14 off a pubic road, as
did two of his friends. Liberty County
Game Warden Daniel Diaz came to
assist in the investigation. The wardens
obtained written statements from the
subject and his two accomplices.
When interviewing the third subject,
they discovered there had been two
additional people in the vehicle on
the night in question. After interview-
ing those subjects, they returned to
the original suspect and interviewed
him again. During the this interview,
they learned that the subject and one
of his friends had also been hunting
on the night of Oct. 13, and killed
another white-tailed deer and a red
stag. The meat from these two animals
was seized and donated to people
in need. The original three deer had
been dumped on the side of the road
and were not salvageable. All ve
individuals were cited and will pay civil
restitution for the deer.

Going into December,
the lake is a little over
12 ft below high pool
and unless we get a
substantial amount of
rain it looks like well be
fshing these low water
conditions for awhile. Lets hope Santa Claus brings us
some rain for Christmas. The low level makes for great
fshing. You just need to make sure you know what
areas you can run and the areas you cant. If youre
not sure slow down.
Typically when you think of fshing on Toledo Bend
in December you think of fshing for our world famous
Crappie that will bunch up over natural or man made
brush tops along the old river channel shelf and ledges.
Wildlife and Fisheries has reduced the creel limit for
Crappie from ffty per person to twenty-fve with no
minimum length. Many experts and numerous fshing
publications have rated Toledo Bend as one of the best,
if not the best, Crappie impoundments in the country.
If you like to fsh for White Bass (Sandies),
December is a great month to load up the freezer with
some ferocious feeding fsh. The Whites will be heading
north and congregating on the north end main lake
river channel sandbars. In fact, December can be as
good or better than the river run in early spring and
there will defnitely be less boat traffc. Slab spoons,
tail spinners and Rat-L-Traps will do the trick. Your
electronics are the key to locating your fsh.
When the water temperature starts dropping
below 50 degrees the basss metabolism starts to slow
down conserving energy. Bass will become less active
immobilizing themselves in deep water where the
temperature variances remain fairly stable. In general,
the most productive lures for fshing this time of year
are the jig and pig, soft plastics, large deep diving crank
baits and spoons. Jigs in black/blue, brown/amber and
camo are usually good choices. Craw worms in reds,
greens and pumpkin are effective and deep diving
crank baits (DD 22s, Mud Bugs) in shad and crawfsh
colors work well. A to oz jigging spoon vertically
fshed over deep water humps will also trigger some
bites.
One of the great things about living in the south
and especially here on Toledo Bend is that we get to
fsh year round and we catch a lot of fsh in December.
The average high temp is 59 degrees. The average low
temp is 38 degrees. The highest recorded temp was
84 degrees and the lowest was 5 degrees. The average
precipitation is 4.2 inches.

BASS ~ Good. Best to
use a jigging spoon early
in 22 to 28 of water
also Senkos fshed over
grass in the watermelon
gold fake color are
working well. As the day
warms move out into the backs of the creeks in 8 to 12 of
water and throw a white willow leaf spinner bait in shad
colors or a suspending jerk bait in pearl shad. All of these
baits can be fshed best on a 7 3 medium Tactical Series
rod by Temple Fork Outftters paired with a Lews reel and
FINS line. Dont forget to spray all your baits with Kick
N Bass. If you need a new pair off polarized glasses that
wont break the bank and are high quality check out a
pair of Flying Fisherman!
BREAM ~ Slow . Best fshing in 19 to 28 of water over
brush using Berkley Power Maggots.
CRAPPIE ~ Excellent. You can fnd them best in the
brush along bends of creeks in 19 to 28 of water. Use a
1/16 oz. jig with a 2 Yum Wooly Beavertail in watermelon
or red shad chartreuse. On tough days switch to shiners.
CATFISH ~ Excellent. Coming best in 19 to 28 of
water - using liver and Catfsh Charlie. Best locations are
around baited holes in bends of creeks.
STRIPERS ~ Good. Fish in the old river - use your
electronics to locate fsh. Best bait is live carp and slab
spoons. Look for schooling action, use a Rinky Dink or
Super Spook for best results.

In reviewing my
December logs for the
past several years, I found
one thing in common....
you can catch a lot of
fsh in December. Some
Decembers we have days
where we can fsh in short sleeves while other days
we need our heavy Gortex. One thing the angler has
to be able to do in order to be consistent is to adjust
to conditions and this is especially true in December.
Unless we get more cold fronts than we have the last
few weeks, water temperatures should remain decent.
Anything over 55 degrees will be excellent and the fsh
should remain very active. If they fall below 50 degrees,
things will get a little tougher although you can still
catch fsh in very cold water.
Some of my go-to patterns for December include
Stanley spinnerbaits and I use them basically in two
presentations. If the water temperatures are 55 and
above and the barometer is either steady or falling,
I choose the 3/8 oz model Vibrashaft (double willow
blades) often fsh the bait fairly fast over and around
visible and submerged hydrilla. For this pattern I like
an Abu Garcia Revo Baitcast reel and medium action 6
10 inch Abu Garcia Veritas rod with 17 lb test Berkley
Big Game mono. If the water temp is below 55 and the
barometric pressure is rising, I will fsh a 3/4 or 1 oz
Stanley and slow-roll it on the outside edge of the grass
and on ridges with scattered grass in 8 to 16 feet. For
this I use same rod/reel but change to 17 lb test 100%
Berkley Fluorocarbon which increases sensitivity, sinks
and has little stretch which assists in feeling light bites
and helps when setting the hook.
The Texas rig has been very effective and Berkley
s Havoc Series Bottom Hopper is just awesome in
scattered and heavy submerge hydrilla (aquatic grass),
this slim 6-7 inch worm really slides through the grass
extremely well. Do not rush this rig through the grass
but take your time. I use 3/16 and 1/4 oz sinkers and
Daiichi and XPoint high carbon steel off-set worm
hooks usually in 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0 sizes. They contain
110 ct carbon steel while other premium hooks boast
about having 80. These hooks are also very light but
extra strong and they also will catch a lot of bass before
they start to lose their optimum sharpness. I often
catch 40-60 bass on one hook. Top Bottom Hopper
colors include watermelon, shady watermelon candy
and green pumpkin.
We continue to use light line (8-10 lb test Berkley
100% Fluorocarbon) with Yamamoto 5 inch Senko
on a wacky rig/Abu Garcia spinning rig with success
in winter months with tough conditions. I like
watermelon, watermelon blue and baby bass and
highlight the tail with a Zoom dye pencil in chartreuse.
I work these mostly weightless in depths of 8 to 18
along points, drains and where creeks come close to the
bank. We also use a light shakyhead jig with Berkley s
Wacky Crawler (5 inch) in tough situations. In windy
situations, we increase slightly the size of lead-head
and go up to Zooms Trick Worm and the Havoc Bottom
Hopper. In December, I always have a drop shot and
jigging spoon and fsh these in depths of 18 to 45 feet.

Todd Driscoll, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Mudbugs and
Lipless Crankbaits
No matter what you call them mudbugs, crawfsh, or
crawdads crayfsh are an important forage species for
largemouth bass at Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Although
shad and sunfsh comprise the bulk of the forage, crayfsh are
frequently eaten by largemouth bass. This is further supported by
the success of crayfsh imitation fshing baits at both lakes (i.e.,
jig/crawworm combinations and brown/orange/red shades of
lipless crankbaits). The lipless crankbait bite during the winter
and early spring is legendary on both reservoirs so legendary
that the colors Rayburn Red and Toledo Gold seem to be the
most popular. The life history of crayfsh seems to explain why this
pattern is so productive during the colder months.
Crayfsh are very diverse with over 600 species worldwide and
39 species in Texas. Little research has been done on wild crayfsh
populations. Given their commercial importance in the food
industry (i.e., Cajun boiled crayfsh), most of the crayfsh life
history and biology has been studied in aquaculture ponds. The
primary species raised for food are the red swamp crayfsh and the
white river crayfsh. Both species are present in Sam Rayburn and
Toledo Bend reservoirs. As their name implies, adult red swamp
crayfsh will have red pigmentation, whereas white river crayfsh
are either off-white, light brown, or faded pink in color. A common
misconception is that crayfsh change colors seasonally, or when
they molt (or shed their skin). I could fnd no evidence of that
while researching for this article.
Crayfsh are extremely adaptable with respect to food habits.
They eat both plant and animal matter. Decomposing plants
provide a bulk of their diet, but for proper nutrition, they require
protein via snails, worms, insects, and small crustaceans. The
average life span for wild crayfsh is only 2 years or less. Crayfsh
are well adapted to the high-water food conditions and low-water
dry conditions inherent to rivers and lakes. Both male and female
crayfsh construct burrows for
moisture during dry periods.
These burrows are often visible
on land when water levels
drop. Burrows also provide protection during the spawning season.
Crayfsh typically mate during the spring season in open water.
Females store sperm in a receptacle on the underside of the body.
Female crayfsh will construct a burrow during late spring or
summer for rearing of young. Crayfsh eggs are attached to the
underside of the female and will hatch in the burrow. Hatched
crayfsh remain attached to the female until they molt twice. The
young crayfsh then detach from the female and emerge from the
burrow, usually during the fall months. For protection, hatchlings
instinctively remain close to the female for several weeks. Juvenile
crayfsh frequently molt (10-12 times) and grow throughout
the winter and reach sexual maturity by the spring season. Once
mature, crayfsh growth stops.
The winter/early spring lipless crankbait bite, particularly using
the crawfsh colors (red, brown, and orange), coincides with the
increase in crayfsh numbers. Juvenile crayfsh emerge from the
burrows in the fall and are relatively easy prey for largemouth
bass throughout the winter and spring. Juvenile crayfsh are
active throughout the winter foraging, as their growth rates are
high. Increases in juvenile crayfsh abundance, activity, and
vulnerability seem to explain the productivity of this fshing
pattern. Average juvenile crayfsh size is also similar to one-
quarter and half-ounce lipless crankbaits. Personally speaking, a
good portion of the bass I catch during the winter are the result of
a Rayburn Red lipless crankbait. Contact us with questions by
phone (409-698-9114) or email (todd.driscoll@tpwd.state.tx.us).
Good luck and good fshing!

The happiness of your life depends on
the quality of your thoughts
Those Foggy Days
The happiness of your life depends on
the quality of your thoughts
Those Foggy Days
The lake was an eerie and fascinating sight as we slowly
idled away from the boat dock. Mother Nature had painted
a blanket of fog so thick that it was hard to distinguish
between water, land and the sky. The shoreline that was so
familiar yesterday seemed lined with ghostly mysterious
shadows. The long-neck crane seeking a morning meal
shrieked and took fight quickly like a prehistoric image
disappearing into the soupy unknown. Your imagination
can certainly run rampant in situations like this.
So what is fog? It is simply a cloud in contact with the
ground rather than in the atmosphere. Fog forms when
there is a great deal of moisture near the ground, or when
the air near the ground cools to the dew point. This is the
temperature to which air must be cooled in order for the
water vapor in the air to condense into liquid water. If air
near the ground cools to this temperature, water vapor from
the air will become visible as dew on the ground or fog in
the air. Fog usually occurs on warm, calm days, when the
water is cooler than the air.
Traveling in foggy conditions can get a person
disoriented quickly and it is certainly no fun being lost
out on the lake (or in the woods). Most anglers these days
have a good Global Positioning System (GPS) mounted
in their boat that allows them to mark not only a current
position but also a trail of GPS coordinates that can take
them safely to and from their fshing locations. But I also
recommend having a plain ol compass mounted in the
boat, just in case you lose power to the GPS unit. Without a
backup to your GPS system you could get into a dangerous
situation.
If I lined up all of the hunters and fshermen that had
a story about some foggy adventure I am sure the line
would be very long. A few years ago a friend of mine and his
son launched on Toledo Bend and both of them knew the
fshing area quite well. As they came out of a creek and hit
the main-lake, fog was so thick that they couldnt even see
the front of their boat. They used their graph to slowly move
a short distance to the area they wanted to fsh and this is
where the problem began. For some unexplained reason the
graph screen went black and there they were in the middle
of the soup with no navigation guide. They slowly motored
back the direction they had come (or thought they had
come) and you can almost guess the rest of the story. The
pair wandered around in the fog for almost two hours before
they just put an anchor out and waited for the fog to lift
which occurred about two hours later. To their surprise they
had gone right past the creek they came out of and were
about two blocks down from where they had started. Last
time I looked in their boat they had a compass mounted
next to the GPS unit. The point of this story is that they
knew the area pretty well and yet in the fog they were totally
lost. What if they had kept going in circles out there and the
fog didnt lift?
So how does all this fog affect your fshing? Well as most
of you know, bass like to stay on the shady side of stumps,
standing timber, brush, etc. Biologists state that the reason
for this behavior is twofold: (1) To enhance the feeling of
security and (2) Eye comfort. Fog cuts out the glaring light
that bothers bass and enables the fsh to roam more freely
from their protective cover. These conditions also make the
bass more accessible to anglers. Some pros believe that
during foggy conditions bass will still relate to heavy cover,
but will move much further to take a bait. This low-light
environment also tends to make the fsh feed longer in
shallow water, and during the warmer months fog tends to
hold insects down close to the surface.
I love to fsh topwaters but the fog can often prevent
your baits from being clearly defned to the fsh. When this
happens use nosier baits in a darker color. Good examples
are Storms Rattlin Chug Bug, Booyahs Counter Strike
buzzbait, a -oz. Rat-L-Trap or one of Heddons Magnum
Torpedos. For spinnerbaits go with those Stanley baits that
have large thumping Colorado blades. The hybrid jig/
spinnerbait type lures such as the Texan Shaker and Strike
Kings Pure Poison can also be quite effective because of
the tremendous amount of vibration they produce. Its also
a good idea to add a trailer hook to many of these baits so
you have a better chance of hooking those short strikers.
Slowing down your retrieve will also allow the bass to more
easily zero-in on the vibration of the lure.
Well there you are, a few tips for boating and fshing
during foggy conditions. Just remember to be careful and
motor slowly as you head to your fshing spot. On more than
one occasion I have had a knucklehead blast by me in the
fog, and heaven knows where he is going or who he is going
to meet on the way. Running into another boat out in the
fog is defnitely no way to make new friends.
I will leave you with a fnal chuckle for foggy weather.
A Sam Rayburn angler got caught up in some heavy
fog and decided to follow the tail light of a passing boat
to get back safely to shore. After about 15 minutes the
angler suddenly crashed into the boat ahead of him when
it stopped suddenly. Why didnt you let me know you were
going to stop? he yelled into the mist. Why should I?
came a voice out of the fog. Im on my boat trailer!

By Robert Baker, TPWD
Our national bird:
the bald eagle
Many people who spend time outdoors in the lakes area have seen a bald eagle. They have become more
common over the last 20 years. They can often be seen perched in a tree or soaring over the lakes. They can live
to be 40 years old in the wild and there are many other interesting facts about them. This article will discuss a
few of them.
Bald eagles are a very beautiful bird. They can reach a weight of 14 pounds and have a wingspan of up to
8 feet. Females are larger than males. Both sexes upon reaching maturity have a white head and tail with a
brown body. The beak and talons are bright yellow. They soar with wings fat and fy with slow smooth wing
beats (unlike vultures that soar with wings up and fy with fast wing beats).
The diet of a bald eagle consists primarily of fsh, but can contain turtles, ducks, small mammals, and
carrion (already dead animals). Hunting consists of perching or soaring while watching for fsh near the
surface and then swooping down grabbing them with their talons. They often will steal fsh from other birds as
well. When they cant fnd fsh they will prey on ducks. Ducks are caught in the air as well as on the water.
Mating in bald eagles is unique and aerobatic. The mates will fy very high into the sky (they will be barely
visible by the human eye). One of the birds will then roll over onto its back under the other. They will then lock
talons and cartwheel back down recovering just before crashing into the ground. They will continue this dance
many times during mating. They dont reach sexual maturity until 5 or 6 years of age at which time they will
also fully obtain their distinctive white head and tail.
Bald eagles can nest in Texas. Their nests in East Texas are often made in Loblolly pine trees that are
taller than others in the area providing an unobstructed view of the area and direct fight path. The nest is
constructed primarily by the female. The male will bring sticks to the female for nest construction. The nest
is 5 to 6 feet wide and several feet deep. Eagles will repair the nest for years to come by adding more sticks.
The nest will be used until the weight cant be supported by the tree.
The female will lay normally 2 eggs in late November through mid January in East Texas. The female will
incubate the eggs for approximately 35 days. When the eggs hatch they are called eaglets. Often there is one
eaglet that is larger and therefore dominant. The parents will feed the eaglets for around 11 weeks until the
eaglets are fedged (fy from the nest). Parents continue to feed the young for several more weeks while they
learn to hunt.
Bald eagles can be found in Texas year round, but many do migrate north to breed in the Great Lakes
Region. They will fy North in March or April before the leaves are out in the North and will fy south in
late November. Those that migrate move in search of plentiful food resources.
Eagles were once on the endangered species list, and as a result of increasing numbers have been delisted.
Population numbers were brought down due to hunting and DDT. These practices were stopped as a result
of legislation passed in the 70s. Hunters were paid a bounty for eagle talons by fshermen that wanted the
eagles to quit harassing fsh in there traps making them unft to sell. DDT (a pesticide sprayed to control
insects in crops and mosquitoes in towns) effected eagles by causing the egg shell to be too thin and would
break when incubated.
These were just a few facts about our national bird the bald eagle. The world is full of interesting animals.
Step outside and enjoy the natural resources that Texas has to offer because life is more fun outdoors.
