COLLECTING By Larry Cox Q: I have an RCA console television set, Model 17T, which was originally purchased in about 1950. I hope you can tell me its value. -Arlene, Haverhill, Mass. A: I checked with three collectors who seem to agree that your set is probably worth in the $75 to $150 range. Televisions produced after 1948 are fairly common and do not create that much interest with collectors. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions such as the 1975 Panasonic Flying Saucer model ($600) and the 1960 Philco Predicta ($500). *** Q: I have a pair of Swarovski crystal candlesticks, about 2 1/2 inches tall, both marked on the bottoms. Could you give me an estimated value of their worth and when produced? -- Dee, Sun City, Ariz.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading Crude Awakening: Money, Mavericks and Mayhem in Alaska by Amanda Coyne and Tony HopfingerReviewed by Larry Cox In the WPA Guide to Alaska published in 1939, its editor states that the best way to know Alaska is to spend a lifetime there. After reading Crude Awakening, theres the feeling that not even a lifetime would be adequate to understand the remote region with its fragmented history, shady dealings and corrupted political and business leaders. Theres a Wild West mentality that puts Alaskas rich natural resources up for grabs. Amanda Coyne and Tony Hopfinger, two seasoned Alaskan reporters based in Anchorage, document the epic tale of Americas final frontier,
including its soaring hopes, fading dreams, drying oil fields, threatened ecology and an uncertain future. Its a story with a cast of bigger-than-life characters, such as Uncle Ted Stevens, the late U.S. senator who for more than 40 years was the states most powerful politician -- until he was brought down by scandal. Stevens rubbed elbows with oil tycoon Bill Allen, who arrived in Alaska with a gradeschool education but eventually became one of the countrys wealthiest lobbyists. He, too, was the target of a government corruption investigation.

The narrative by Coyne and Hopfinger make it clear that in Alaska, everything -- and I do mean everything -- is connected and corrupted in one way or another. Examples include Bami Tyree, a Wasilla beauty with a crack problem who was sexually involved with Bill Allen; and Frank Murkowski, who also was involved in dealings with Allen and who appointed his daughter, Lisa Murkowski, to serve out his term in the U.S. senate after he was elected governor. This triggered a feud between the Murkowski family and Sarah Palin. Palin, according to the authors, is a political opportunist with Alaska-bred hubris, charisma and, more importantly, an incredible sense of timing. Out of the ashes of cronyism and corruption, Palin was born.

Now Cary Elwes, who starred in "The Princess Bride," has written a screenplay with Joey and Hanala Sagal, which he will direct. Elwes cast Eric Bana ("Hulk," "Troy," "Munich" and "Star Trek," to name a few) as Elvis, and Danny Huston ("Avatar," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), the half-brother of Oscar-winner Angelica Huston, to play Nixon. It will be shot in Los Angeles and Shreveport, La. The film comes on the heels of the award-winning movie "Frost/Nixon" directed by Ron Howard. Elvis was as American as apple pie, yet Eric Bana is Australian, and when "The Tudors" Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (an Irishman) played him, he won a Golden Globe Award for his Elvis mini-series in 2005. British and Australian actors seem to have a handle on Southern accents. English actress Vivian Leigh won an Oscar for playing the greatest Southern belle of all time, Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind." Ryan Gosling, one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, starred in "The Notebook," "Half Nelson" (for which he was Oscar nominated), "Lars and the Real Girl," "Blue Valentine," "Crazy Stupid Love," "Drive" and "The Ides Of March." Whew! His next two films are "Gangster Squad" with Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Nick Nolte, and "The Place Beyond the Pines" with Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper. Pretty good for a kid from Ontario, Canada, who started on "The Mickey Mouse Club" with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Oh yes, and all this before his 30th birthday (Nov. 12). Another Canadian, from Vancouver, B.C, is Ryan Reynolds. You don't really believe all that stuff in the tabloids about him and Sandra Bullock, do you? Can't a man and a woman just be friends? Ryan's next two films are "Safe House" with Denzel Washington, shooting in Cape Town, South Africa, and set for release in February, and "R.I.P.D." (based on the comic book "Rest in Peace Department") with Jeff Bridges and Kevin Bacon, due out in June 2013. By the way, have you heard that Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have been secretly dating for two years -- ever since they made "The Proposal" -- even though they were both married at the time. If you believe that, there's this bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you! (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Which shows are you digging so far? -- Clyde R., via e-mail A: In the drama category, far and away my favorite show has to be ABC's "Revenge," which has injected a much-needed shot of campy, soapy, sexy drama into my Wednesday nights. (If you are on Twitter, you can follow my live-tweeting feeds at twitter.com/ celebrity_extra every Wednesday starting at 10 p.m. ET, where all of us "Revenge" fans whoop and holler together.) I haven't had this much fun watching a nighttime drama -- nor have I talked to the TV screen so much -Tim Griffin since "Melrose Place." On the comedy side, it's a tie between Zooey Deschanel's "New Girl" on Fox and ABC's "Suburgatory," whose ensemble cast of Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Cheryl Hines, Alan Tudyk and Ana Gasteyer has me wiping tears of laughter from my face every episode. Q: I love watching "The Talk" every afternoon. What happened to two of the original hostesses, Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini? -Joanne M., Fairport, N.Y. A: Holly's and Leah's contracts were not renewed by CBS after the first season. As of Sept. 6 and Oct. 23, respectively, CBS officially replaced them with Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler. Q: I really like "Prime Suspect," especially the actor who plays Detective Blando. Can you tell me a little about him? He looks so familiar. -- Gennifer F., Allentown, Pa. A: Tim Griffin, 42, has starred and guest-starred in countless TV series and big-screen movies, including "Party of Five," "Charmed," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Bourne Supremacy," "24," "Iron Man," "The Men Who Stare at Goats," and most recently, "Super 8" and "Abduction." I spoke with Tim about his role in the American version of the British cop drama and asked if he had any qualms about trying to "remake" such a popular series. Tim told me: "It wasn't really until we started doing the initial press work that I realized, 'OK, this is a sacred institution,' because I was a huge fan of the British series too. It's almost like a trial by fire that you have to go through. Can it be envisioned, reimagined with an American voice? "Our partners are the original producers of the original Prime Suspect,' Tim said. "So we have that entire cannon of scripts at our disposal, and we have Peter Berg as the executive producer and director. It's like its own new animal." (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD Elvis Presley once offered President Richard Nixon his services as a federal agent-at-large in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. How's that for irony? Elvis met with Nixon in the White House hoping to be an undercover Fed, while Nixon wanted Elvis to help his image with young people. That meeting was the basis of a 97 Showtime telepic.

something expensive. Also try to avoid the post-holiday sales unless there is something specific that you need to purchase and plan to use now. Chances are this years hot product wont have the same appeal when the next holiday season comes around. Shop during the lulls. If youre serious about saving money this holiday season, treat Black Friday for what it is: a social event designed to promote extra spending. After watching the frenzy on the news, head out during one of the first few weeks after Thanksgiving, when store inventories are more stable or better yet, do your shopping a few weeks in advance when prices arent yet inflated. Many stores will also offer price adjustments if youve purchased items at a higher price within 14 days. Catch the DIY spirit. The sluggish economy has forced many people to cut back on holiday spending, but this trend has also brought an upside: More creative giving. With less money to spend, many consumers have forgone big ticket items in favor of unique gifts sold at secondhand or local stores. Have a history buff on your list? Theres no need to buy a boxed documentary set when you can peruse a used bookstore to find a vintage edition instead. Others have even cut back on shopping and made their own gifts. Do you enjoy knitting, crafting or cooking? Make a custom hat, build a picture frame for a photo taken over the holidays, or make a fancy dessert for the foodie in the family. Dont feel youre being cheap. Often the more personal your gift, the more memorable it is. Do your homework. Research before you spend.
Web sites like SalesCircular.com and PriceGrabber compare both individual products and sale prices offered by major retail chains. If you have a good handle on the individual items you want to buy, you may be better off doing most of your shopping online. Big retailers like Amazon often give free shipping for purchases over a certain dollar amount, which can maximize the impact of the lower prices those retailers afford by externalizing shipping costs. Cut out convenience. Pulling off a well-researched, soundly-budgeted and creative set of gifts takes time and energy in a season where both are limited. While its
fine to give yourself a break by eating out or paying more for a gift at one store to save the trip to another, dont spoil your careful planning by spending too much on incidentals. You can beat such weaknesses of the moment through small actions: Spacing out your errands into smaller, less hurried trips and giving yourself more time to relax throughout the week. If you do shopping after work, snack on something before you leave to tide yourself over until you get home. None of these strategies are easy. But your discipline during the run-up will make the relaxation and indulgence of the holidays even sweeter. f ***

GOOD TIMINGS TO YOU The holiday season can really press on our schedules shopping, making travel arrangements, work parties and school concerts fill our nights well before the holidays and into the final days of December. That busyness can also be a source of unexpected financial strain. Multiple trips to the mall dont just take time and gas money - they can also take the edge off your discipline to spend wisely. When we dine out for convenience, buy on impulse because a price is marked down, or choose gifts based on media hype, we risk leaving money on the table. Fortunately the solution may be as simple as planning ahead. Before you get whisked into the holiday season, sit down with a pad and pen and make a plan. Plan out your holiday schedule with the following tips in mind. Budget and divide. The most important part of sticking to a budget is coming up with one. If you dont have a guide for spending, you are much more likely to buy items on impulse and spend more than you can afford. Once you decide what amount you can spend, make a list of the people you would like to give presents. Divvy different shares of the budget to family and friends (or coworkers) and spread each amount among the people listed. With your price points decided, you can focus on getting each person something unique. Set your limits. Paying for holiday gifts should end before the holiday season does. Remember that gifts are gifts, not necessities, and that no one on your gift list wants you to run up a credit card balance in order to buy them

You dont have to buy expensive packing peanuts or bubble wrap -- you can use whats around. For instance, plastic grocery bags are always in abundance. They can be tucked into any spare space and they barely weigh a thing. Same with newspaper; fill all the available space so that nothing bounces around in transit. Save your bubble wrap for the following tip. When mailing cookies, make sure they are packed well. Use an appropriate size container, and give layers some space by separating them with small sheets of bubble wrap. My cookies arrive intact every time. -- J.J. in Florida I use a black permanent marker to erase scuff marks on my black heels. I only wear them a couple of times a year, so I have to make them last. He later documented the event in a painting titled "Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear." During his lifetime, van Gogh sold only one painting. On Dec. 22, 1900, the first car to be produced under the "Mercedes" name is delivered to its buyer, Emil Jellinek, an Austrian car racer and auto dealer to the rich and famous. In exchange for buying 36 of the cars, the auto company agreed to name its new machine after Jellinek's 11-year-old daughter, Mercedes. On Dec. 24, 1923, President Calvin Coolidge touches a button and lights the first national Christmas tree to grace the White House grounds. The tree was the first to be decorated with electric lights -- a strand of 2,500 red, white and green bulbs. NOW HERE'S A TIP: By JoAnn Derson Here's a great conversation piece: Get a big, shallow bowl or box, fill it with loose snapshots (preferably of holidays past) and set it on your coffee table. People can't resist photos. "I've loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, de-stemmed white grapes. UNLOCKING MISTLETOES MYSTERIES Scandanavians associated Mistletoe with Frigga, their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had the promise of happiness and good luck in the following year. The practice of kissing under the mistletoe was described in 1820 by American author Washington Irving in his The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon: The mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases. Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter.
Very nice 2/3/5 bedrooms, many extras. For more information, call 814-558-6112.
Mistletoe is intriguing botanically because it is a partial parasite (a hemiparasite). As a parasitic plant, it grows on the branches or trunk of a tree and sends out roots that penetrate into the tree and take up nutrients. But it also can grow on its own and produce food by photosynthesis. The mistletoe that is commonly used as a Christmas decoration (Phoradendron flavescens) is native to North America and grows as a parasite on trees in the West and also along a line down the East Coast from New Jersey to Florida. European mistletoe (Viscum album) figured prominently in Greek mythology, and is believed to be The Golden Bough of Aeneas, ancestor of the Romans. It is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace. Mistletoe is rarely found growing on oak trees, and as such was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixth night of the moon, white-robed Druid priests would cut the oak mistletoe with a

The artists include Alma Gluck and Paul Whiteman. What are records of this vintage worth? -George, Albuquerque, N.M. A: Most Victor Red Seal recordings from the early years of the last century are valued in the $1 to $5 range depending on artist, desirability and condition. Caruso made recordings at Victor, but the most valuable are those issued on other, earlier labels such as Pathe and Zonophone.

NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton Truck Champ Dillon Going Nationwide Another generation found its wings and took flight. Or, at least, hoisted a trophy in celebration. Austin Dillon is the 21-year-old grandson of team owner and former driver Richard Childress. Childress won six (now) Sprint Cup championships with the great Dale Earnhardt. Dillon drove a Chevy Silverado with No. 3 on its sides to the championship of the Camping World Truck Series. Three, of course, is the number indelibly associated with Earnhardt, and Dillon will carry it with him when he competes next year in the
Using the No. 3 that his grandfather and owner Richard Childress had for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to use in Cup racing, Austin Dillon came away with the Camping World Truck Series championship. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)
Nationwide Series. "Our whole family is involved, and I remember the very first championship with Dale Earnhardt," Childress reminisced. "I had the same feeling tonight watching Austin, my grandson. It's just so special to have the family and know how hard all of them worked." Dillon called it "the best feeling I've ever had in my entire life." He said one key to the advancement of his career was "watching these guys in the (Sprint) Cup Series talk to each other." "I listen to Tony Stewart, and I listen to Carl Edwards and the different approaches they take to it," Dillon said. "Offense is your best defense most of the time in racing ..."
"Darrell Waltrip told me the best feeling in the world is going home stinking and having a trophy in your lap, and we were able to do that." Younger brother Ty will compete next year in the ride being vacated by Austin. Of Austin, Childress said, "He handles pressure better than a lot of people his age, and his brother Ty does, too. "They must get it from their mom, because me and their dad (Mike Dillon) get a little wound up sometimes." *** Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was megalomaniacal French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who made the following sage observation: "Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets." Records show that the town of Helena, Montana, had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world - way back in 1888. In the early 1970s, a British plumber named John Hancock replaced an antique toilet in the home of John Lennon, then kept the old toilet for the rest of his life. In 2010, after Hancock's death, his heirs put it up for auction. Even the auction house was surprised when the former Beatle's throne fetched a whopping $14,740. When you're in an unpopu-
lated area and gaze up at the night sky, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the pro-fusion of stars. But what's truly overwhelming is this: All the stars that are visible from Earth represent only 0.000000000000001 percent of all the stars in the known universe. You may not be aware of this, but there is a new fad that is catching on among some groups across the country: tall biking. Hobbyists construct bicycles with normalsized front & rear wheels, but with frames and seats that extend anywhere from 6 to 10 feet off the ground. Some riders actually use these bikes to joust, using lances made out of PVC pipe and foam rubber. It's unclear, however, exactly how the riders mount their steeds. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Is your calculator clear? I have to admit that Im better with words than numbers. I have several friends who are accountants and Im very grateful each of them enjoys running numbers. Im much better processing words. So when I pull out a calculator, which I did recently, its against my better wishes and is totally necessary. Only I couldnt get it to work correctly. Pretty soon, I discovered that the problem wasnt with the calculator, but with me. I wasnt clearing the calculator before trying to do another function which meant I was piling up about three functions at a time. Life is like that calculator. If you dont clear a negative conversation with a client at work out of your mind before you go home, it walks in the door with you and gets in the way of you enjoying your family. If you dont clear a painful relationship from your heart before you try to begin another one, you may never love completely again. Clear the calculator in your mind and heart today so you can enjoy life to the fullest as you Live Positive. A public service message brought to you by

As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we cant verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising

Many look for others to make them happy. Some rely on cars, clothes or other material possessions for happiness. The truth is happiness comes from within. It is created by the individual often through good deeds that he/she does. For many, helping others is a primary way to create happiness. This year write down those things that bring you happiness and create them. Recovery from drugs and alcohol is sometimes not easy but if one is working toward positive goals and creating happiness for themselves it can aid in recovery a great deal. If you or someone you know is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction contact Narconon Arrowhead today at 800468-6933 or visit us at www.stopaddiction.com. fb RICHBURG FIRST DAY BAPTIST CHURCH 128 Main St., Box 242 Pastor: Larry J. In the winter of 1932, Niagara Falls froze solid. Madame Tussaud started creating her famous wax figures in 1777 and created many models during the French Revolution. She traveled around Europe displaying wax figures (both the ones she created and ones she inherited from her mentor), and she opened her first museum in London in 1831. Today there are branches located in
the United Kingdom, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Vienna, Moscow, Bangkok, Dubai, Berlin and Hamburg, plus five U.S. locations. Its appropriate that there are more locations in American than in any other country, since so many Hollywood celebrities are recreated in the museums. In fact, in 2006, Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolies baby, became the first infant to be memorialized in wax for Madame Tussauds. Those who study such things say that apples are more effective than caffeine at waking you up in the morning.

I used to write and re-write our family calendar, but now I just make a grid for the days/weeks, and I use Post-it notes to enter parties, school obligations and anything that is a maybe. Its much easier to move around and add or delete events as needed. -- A Reader, via email *** Thought for the Day: The trouble with being punctual is that nobodys there to appreciate it. -- Franklin P. Just remember that one of these jumbos is equivalent to six regular-size cookies. 3 large eggs 1 pounds (4 sticks) butter or margarine, softened 1 package (16-ounce) brown sugar 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 6 cups all-purpose flour 2 packages (12-ounce) semisweet chocolate chips 1 bag (16-ounce) chopped walnuts 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In very large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat eggs 4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in butter, sugars, vanilla, baking soda and salt. Stir in flour,
chocolate chips and walnuts (mixture will be very stiff). 2. Line 2 large cookie sheets with parchment paper. Drop dough by level 1/3 cups (or use 2 1/2-inch ice-cream scoop), 2 inches apart, onto prepared cookie sheets. 3. Bake cookies 23-26 minutes or until golden around the edges, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower racks halfway through baking. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool. 4. Repeat with remaining dough, reusing the same parchment. Store your cookies in a tightly covered container at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 3 months. Makes about 3 dozen cookies. Each cookie: About 425 calories, 25g total fat (11g saturated), 45mg cholesterol, 265mg sodium, 50g carbohydrate, 3g dietary fiber, 6g protein. PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Dogs Cough a Worry DEAR PAWSS CORNER: My friend has a Border Collie mix, Jeffy, who is about two or three years old. He snorts or coughs at least 10 or 15 times a day, and when he does, a copious amount of mucus comes out of his nose. Can you tell me what causes this and how to remedy it? -- B.P., Prince George, Va. DEAR B.P.: Coughing in dogs can have a number of causes, ranging from allergy to serious infection. The first thing your friend needs to do is take Jeffy to the veterinarian to rule out a dangerous illness like kennel cough or other infection, or an injury. Your friend should let the vet know how long Jeffy has had this cough, if he was recently boarded or regularly goes to doggy day care, and if his shots are up to date. Jeffy also should be regularly treated with a heartworm preventive; if he isnt, your friend must let the doctor know. If Jeffy dealt with a recent flea infestation, let the vet know. If Jeffy is diagnosed with an illness -- respiratory infections can happen to any dog -- the vet will determine the type of infection and prescribe medicine to treat it. He also may prescribe a cough suppressant to give the dog a little relief from the coughing. If Jeffy gets a clean bill of health, your friend will want to look into other causes of his cough and mucus, such as seasonal allergies, a food allergy or an environmental allergy such as dampness and/or mold in the house. Treatment, along with reduced exposure to the allergen thats causing the problem, can make a big difference. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.
