Programme: Project: Unit: Cohort: Issued: Deadline: Schedule: Extended diploma in Interactive Media Stop Motion 46 Digital Story Telling, 59 Stop Motion Animation Production Interactive Media Year 2 Tuesday 13th September 2011 Thursday 3rd November 2011 8 Weeks (Inclusive of Half Term-24th-28th Oct)

Overview
Stop motion (also known as stop action or frame-by-frame) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.

You must create a short stop motion movie that is at least one minute in length. The movie will be based on the theme of your own choice, and will primarily utilise techniques of photography, but could also include very small portions of video recording. Your piece will be manufactured using traditional stop motion techniques and pieced together in Flash or imovie. It is essential that you appreciate the history and development of stop motion invention, before you venture into your own ideas and storyboarding. Your short movie will be manipulated with skill and include a soundtrack and various sound effects to accompany the atmosphere of the footage. You may decide to base your stop motion on personalised artwork, found objects, claymation, time-lapse, instructions, a day in the life of?, etc. This project is broad with great potential, but will require concise planning and attention to detail. You will be marked on creativity, uniqueness and execution of your own story, and the nal piece is expected to appeal to your chosen target audience.

You can use the following formats: stop-frame techniques, time lapse photography, plasticine animation, claymation, using found objects, modelling, puppetry, combined formats - i.e photography & digital titles, etc. Manipulate and develop sound and visual material: eg using software, post-production audio: soundtrack; dialogue; synchronisation; levels scanning; use of editing software. Evaluation - your evaluation should include an action plan ( what went well, what didnt go so well and how you would improve). Feedback
must be included in your evaluation (See below).

Unit Objectives
Digital Story Telling (Unit 46)
Storytelling be it factual or ctional, is an essential part of life, culture and society. Some of the most important messages in society are delivered and passed on in the form of stories. Over the centuries it has been an important aspect to human development. Stories have been used to entertain, inspire belief, mobilise peoples, document life, communicate doctrines, cross cultural boundaries, challenge accepted ideals, and to ask fundamental questions about the notion of existence itself. It remains one of the most enthralling, vital and engaging activities in human culture today. This unit enables learners to identify storytelling mechanisms and use them to develop stories of their own, using digital technology. More accessible, less expensive digital technology has made it cheaper and easier to produce stories. Digital storytelling also crosses into contemporary art and design practice. Digital technology made storytellers work more accessible to a wider audience and potentially more interactive, in various forms, through the internet. In this unit learners will be taught how to construct a story, plan its production and capture visual and sound material. They will consider storytelling conventions such as narration and make decisions on how they are going to tell their story. They will learn about different digital technologies, processes and equipment such as cameras, equipment and software. Learners will be encouraged to produce a dynamic and exciting story using digital technology, and to explore the possibilities in this medium. You will be taught how to manipulate the sound and visual material they have captured in the post- production stage. They will manage their projects by organising project layouts, controlling settings, naming les appropriately and using timelines. They will also explore aspects of image and sound manipulation techniques by using different aspects of the editing or post-production software. As they work through the process of constructing their story, they will be able to refer back to their original intentions, and gain valuable insights into their working practice.

Unit Objectives
Stop Motion Animation Production (Unit 59)
Animation has become an increasingly important media form and examples can be seen in formats as different as advertising, feature lms, mobile phone content, the internet and television. The industry includes both large and small production companies working on stop motion animation projects using a range of formats and for a variety of purposes. Animation on all scales requires people with fresh, exciting ideas for new work, whilst larger companies will also need individuals with specialist skills, such as model making. This unit aims to extend learners competence in all stages of the stop motion animation of models (the term model being used in this unit to include the objects, puppets or gures used as characters in a stop motion animation). Learners will work on design, character, setting and narrative, whilst also developing a range of production techniques. Point of view, lighting and movement, such as walking and lip synching, are key issues in this unit. Stop motion animation involves developing creative ideas for character, setting and storyline which will engage the chosen audience. Learners will be encouraged to experiment with both content and technique. As essential background, learners need to research the content and production techniques used in both historical and contemporary examples of work, and to understand such things as persistence of vision, frame rates, stop-frame techniques, model making and sets. As they follow the unit, learners will increasingly recognise the need to keep their intended audience constantly in mind, and to take into account, at all stages, the role of animation as communication. To encourage this recognition their animation work will be exhibited to audiences after completion and audience responses evaluated.

Grade Criteria:
UNIT 59: Stop Motion Animation Production
To achieve a Pass Grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
1. Describe the techniques and development of stop motion animation with some appropriate use of subject terminology 2. Generate outline ideas for a stop motion animation with soundtrack, working within appropriate conventions and with some assistance 3. 4. Produce a stop motion animation with soundtrack with some assistance Comment on audience responses to own stop motion animation work with some appropriate use of subject terminology.

To achieve a Merit Grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
1. Explain the techniques and development of stop motion animation with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology 2. Generate detailed ideas for a stop motion animation with soundtrack, showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance 3. Produce a stop motion animation with soundtrack to a good technical standard with only occasional assistance 4. Explain audience responses to own stop motion animation work with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology.

To achieve a Distinction Grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
1. Comprehensively explain the techniques and development of stop motion animation with elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly 2. Generate thoroughly thought-through ideas for a stop motion animation with soundtrack, showing creativity and air and working independently to professional expectations 3. Produce a stop motion animation with soundtrack to a technical quality that reects nearprofessional standards, working independently to professional expectations 4. Critically evaluate audience responses to own stop motion animation work with supporting arguments and elucidated examples, and consistently using subject terminology correctly.
