Recruitment week is finally here!

As you start your week, remember


to relax and have fun. This booklet
is designed to help you through
your potential new member (PNM)
experience in remembering the
recruitment rules and your rights as
a PNM. The following pages allow
you to jot down details about each
sorority as well as your thoughts
and feelings as you leave each
house. The back page includes a
map to help guide you around Greek
Village. The Panhellenic Association
and its Recruitment team wish you
the best of luck during Recruitment! Have a great time!

RECRUITMENT POLICIES
To ensure a smoother, more enjoyable Recruitment week, the
Panhellenic Association and its sororities have set up some regulations
for the recruitment period. These rules are designed to help you make an
unbiased decision concerning sorority membership and to give all USF
sororities an equal opportunity during the membership selection process.
If you feel that one of these rules has been violated, please speak with
your Pi Chi or any member of the Panhellenic Executive Board about
the incident.

1. Sorority members may recruit only during recruitment events.


Outside of recruitment events, sorority women may not engage in
contact with you aside from cordial greetings or “friendly contact”. You
may not visit a sorority woman’s room or allow her to visit yours during
the recruitment period August 1, 2008-September 1, 2008.
2. Invitations to recruitment events will be extended through the
Panhellenic Association and the Pi Chi groups only. Invitations or bids
from individual chapters are strictly prohibited.
3. Sorority women (collegian or alumnae) may not call you, send you
gifts or letters of any kind, or visit you during Recruitment week.
4. In addition to these general rules, all women associated with sororities
at USF subscribe to a Recruitment Code of Ethics.
According to the Code of Ethics, sorority members, alumnae, parents’
clubs, chapter advisors, etc., will not take an unfair advantage of any
situation to pressure, promise membership to, or suggest that a potential
new member join a particular group prior to the issuing of a formal bid
by Panhellenic.
Unfortunately, important events
can sometimes bring about rumors,
and recruitment is no exception. If
you hear any derogatory remarks
about any sorority, or any women
in the groups, remember to
evaluate the source and keep an
open mind. If this information is
heard from any sorority women,
please report it to your Pi Chi or
any Panhellenic Executive Board
member immediately. It is up to
you to determine your thoughts and
feelings about a particular sorority;
no one else has a right to influence
your decision. Any other questions
you might have should be directed
to the Pi Chis or the Panhellenic
Executive Board.

HAZING AND DISCRIMINATION


Hazing and discrimination are strictly prohibited; both are treated thor-
oughly and with severe consequences. The Panhellenic Association and
its members follow and strictly uphold the following policies:

HAZING
Hazing is defined as any action or situation with or without consent
that recklessly, intentionally or unintentionally endangers the mental or
physical health or safety of a student, or creates risk of injury, or causes
discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule or that willfully
destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of
initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for
continued membership in, a chapter or colony of an NPC member
fraternity.
Such activities and situations include, but are not limited to: creation of
excessive fatigue; psychological shocks; wearing publicly apparel that is
not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and jokes;
participating in treasure or scavenger hunts; morally degrading or
humiliating games and activities or normal sleep patterns; and any other
activities that are not consistent with fraternal law, ritual, or the
regulations and policies of the member fraternity or the educational
institution. All member groups will affirm their policies on hazing and
inform their membership of this NPC position on hazing through
mailings and through their international organizations.
DISCRIMINATION
Per University of South Florida
policies, students have the right to
not to be discriminated against by
any agent or organization, including
recognized student organizations of
USF for reasons of age, creed,
ethnic or national origin, gender,
disability, marital status, political
or social affiliation, race, religion,
or sexual orientation. This policy
includes recruiting, membership,
organization activities, or
opportunities to hold office.
Hazing and discrimination are not
tolerated at USF. If you or anyone
you know is experiencing hazing or
discrimination at any level, report
it immediately to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at (813)
974-7335.

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER BILL OF RIGHTS


As you experience Recruitment week, it is very important for you to
know that as a PNM you have many rights. You have the right to:
1. Be fully informed about the recruitment process
2. Be treated as an individual
3. Ask questions and receive true and objective answers from Recruit-
ment Counselors and members
4. Be treated with respect
5. Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized
6. Ask how and why and receive straight answers
7. Have and express opinions to Recruitment Counselors
8. Have unchallengeable confidentiality when sharing information with
Recruitment Counselors
9. Make informed choices without pressure from others
10. Be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the bid
acceptance process
11. Make one’s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility
for the results of that decision
12. Have a positive, safe and enriching recruitment and new member
experience

HELPFUL HINTS
*If you do not live on campus, there is non-resident parking at all the
“S” lots around campus.
*Your Pi Chis (also known as your Recruitment Counselors) will aid you
in any and every way possible.
*No question is a dumb question.
*Make sure you are on time for all events.
*You will be given “tea cards” for each house. Make sure you give them
to individual chapter members.
*Relax.Tthe sorority members are probably more nervous than you are.
*Most importantly, BE YOURSELF!!!
CELL PHONE POLICY
Due to the short time for events during
each round, we ask that you refrain
from bringing cell phones into any
recruitment events. You are
provided bags at the beginning of
the week to carry your personal
belongings and we ask that you
keep your cell phone in it. Also,
please keep your cell phone on
silent or vibrate. The bag will
stay outside of the event and
your Pi Chis will be watching it.

Recruitment Booklet Corrections:
Kappa Delta:
The Kappa Delta color is “Olive Green”, not “Oliver Green”. The GPA
is a 3.0 and the monthly housing cost is now $530 a month. Kappa Delta
has an additional symbol: the katydid. The complete mission statement
should read:
“Kappa Delta Sorority is a national organization for women commit-
ted to inspiring our members to reach their full potential; preparing
our members for community service, active leadership and responsible
citizenship; creating opportunities for lifetime involvement through
innovative and responsive programs, and strategic collaborations and
partnerships; and fostering the development of our time-honored values
within the context of friendship.”
