Lesson Plan Week 2 Tuesday Standards/ Objectives: CC.11-12.SL.

1 Comprehension and Collaboration: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 1112 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. CC.11-12.R.ST.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but still accurate terms.

Procedures: Step 1: Before class begins, divide the classroom into small groups of four. Students will be put into specific groups prior to the beginning of class to ensure groups stay on track and vary in ability. Step 2: Small Group Reading Assignment 1. Inform students that we will be taking a break from Our America today and will read a short story from an Asian-American writer. 2. Students will be reading the short story A Half Caste in their small groups. 3. They will be issued a reading guide to assist them in their reading of the story and to draw attention to important occurrences in the story that are related to Our America (See attached worksheet). 4. Instruct students to follow the instructions on the reading guide exactly and to do the questions in order. 5. Once students get started, circulate around the classroom, checking on the progress of groups and answering any questions they way have. Step 3: Wrapping Up the Day 1. With 5-10 minutes left of class, go over the worksheet, the last questions in particular, and the answers they came up with. 2. Tell students that we will continue to work on A Half Caste tomorrow, so continue to think of comparisons it has with Our America. 3. Collect worksheets at the end of class.

Assessment/ Evaluation CC.11-12.SL.1: Students will collaboratively work with their groups to finish their reading guides. Discussion and individual interpretation are necessary and encouraged through the assignment.

CC.11-12.R.ST.2: Students complete the reading guide with their group. Assess based on effort and completion. There are no right answers, but are rather used as a way to activate understanding and general ideas of larger themes we have already discussed. ______________________________________________________________________________
