ITEM 1: DIY TOYS PROPOSAL GRADE: _____ Originality and Creativity _____ Analysis _____ Packaging _____ Total Points
Background: Narrate how your group came together and brainstormed, and finally agreed to work on this particular toy. What were your motivations? What were your feelings about MAKING your own toys? Did you have any particular child or person in mind for this project (perhaps a god/daughter or son, brother or sister, cousins, or yourself?)? Objectives: Target Age Range: Player Skills you hope to enhance: (For example, motor skills, analytical etc.) A toy FOR: Girls, Boys, Both?

Insert Packaging and LOGO here As an example I am cut-pasting an image from this site: http://www.legendsandlore.com/sockpuppets.html I expect something MORE challenging than a sock puppet from you because after all there are FIVE of you in the group. Half a person can do this sock puppet while napping!

Page |3 As stated in the guideline, you are tasked to come up with YOUR OWN packaging with the use of a logo or a catchy slogan and an image to go with your DIY TOY. Materials: List them here Expected Time for Completion: Itemized Steps: Analysis: In essay format, you are supposed to come up with an analysis about SIMILAR toys in the market and how much they cost. For example, a Full Body Elmo Puppet that is not comparable to the sock puppet above costs an arm and a leg (see http://www.amazon.com/Sesame-Street-Elmo-PlushPuppet/dp/B002OKRYOY ) but how do you step up to the challenge of making nifty toys that are relatively inexpensive? Also this is where your ideas about the gender divide in the manufacture of toys come in. What are the colours that you have used? Are they specifically gendered? What about the material? Are there any materials that are associated with boys (for example steel, wood, etc.) compared with girls (lace, frills, plush, etc). Lastly, would your group be proud to give this toy to someone special, like maybe your inaanak (godchild), your girl-friend or boy-friends younger sibling, or perhaps your future daughter/son? What have you learned about this activity as an individual and as a group? Wat is it like working together, have you had differences in opinions regarding what girls and boys would like or play with? Narrate.

ITEM 2: The BECHDEL TEST GRADE: _____ Film Choice (10) _____ Evidence (10) _____ Analysis (20) _____ Total Points (40)
You are supposed to choose ONE Film each for the following categories and apply the Bechdel test. (1) Two Heterosexual Women Cite particulars of the Film, for example: Title: Temptation Island Director: Joey Gosiengfiao Year Released: 1980 Insert Stills/Clip here (Note that this is just a SAMPLE, you are supposed to get the image yourselves, take a screen shot from your

Page |5 digital players)

This site has a listing of movies: http://bechdeltest.com/ you may consult it to get a feel of what you are about to do. Your task is to look at films that are Filipino-produced and screened locally. They may be mainstream or independent. Cite particular passages or dialogues that you are about to analyse. Take note that while the original Temptation Island is very high on camp-value, the female characters are not very nice to one another. The scene above is captioned and probably the bonding scene of the girls. Compare that with another scene where Jennifer Cortess character said:

Page |6

Because I am borrowing these images from the internet, they have already been captioned. I expect you to do this your own way and provide the evidence on this space with the attached stills and dialogues (2) Two Women (where at least ONE identifies as Lesbian) Do the same, see number one above. But the test here is tweaked: that they are talking about either of their love-interests (woman, or man). (3) Two Men (where at least ONE identifies as gay and/or bakla, or bisexual man) Do the same, see number one above. But the test is tweaked: that that they are talking about either of their love-interests (woman, or man). SYNTHESIZE and write your analyses HERE about the three films and assess whether your group agrees that the Bechdel test is essential and helpful in evaluating patterns of our image-consumption, that is, in critically viewing the gendered characters that we watch in Filipino cinema. As I have asked in the guideline, how adequate is the test when it comes to non-heterosexual characters? And for production side (attention Communications majors), how are you challenged to come up with a diversity of images of women and men, hetero, homo, bi or trans or even asexual?

ITEM 3: INTEGRATION ESSAY GRADE: _____ Writing (5) _____ Topic (5) _____ Analysis 10) _____ Total Points (20)
Choose one from the following areas: A person a personality, celebrity, theorist, a person of interest whom you consider as a role model. Or it could be someone you deem worthy of studying in class, or in your own time. My own examples: Judith Butler, professional philosopher and feminist, an advocate of anti-Semitism, and Annie Lennox, musician and HIV Activist An issue one that has been taken up in class or is a related concern. It could be gender and or sex in the fields of education (sex education and research), religion, health (especially with the debates about the RH Bill and HIV statistics), mores and expectations (the dress code provisions in the student handbook) My own examples would come from Butlers Gender Trouble where she problematizes the distinction between sex and gender, image and reality. If gender is performative as the queer theorists espouse then how are we to make use of it in the light of advocating real life problems and concerns such as the alarming HIV statistics in Sub-Saharan Africa (Lennoxs advocacy), where most of persons with AIDS are heterosexual? An event this could be a personal event (your firsts for example or some relevant detail that opened new perspectives) or a current event of national or international import. My own example would be to narrate the 15 years or so that I have spent living in two worlds: the ivory tower of the academe as a philosopher and the streets as an LGBT activist. The ideal and the real are forces that always clash, and from the first pride march I have attended in 1996, until the last in 2010, I can reflect on the many changes that have happened through the decades. And the IDEA that all humans are EQUAL: regardless of race, class, creed, gender and sexual orientation.

Page |8 This is the rationale of Genders, referring to the course. Again, the idea is an ideal, does this idea sit well with you? Or do you believe otherwise? Your task is to think about these four concerns: persons, issues, events and ideas, WEAVE them together and integrate them as you reflect on the nature and your understanding of sex, gender, and desire. You now have the opportunity to write about something that is of interest to you but you must relate it with any of the topics in our hand-out/FB group or class discussion. Your integration ESSAY with a minimum word-count of 600 should be integrative, discussing your position about these, and how the course has helped you (or not) in clarifying your ideas and have a better grasp of the gender angle. Also integrate the answers to the following in your essay : In what ways is Genders relevant in your everday life? Do the issues we talk about or discuss ever factor in with the way you now relate to others? Have there been changes? Are these changes positive or negative? How might you teach yourself further eve after the term is over? How is Genders relevant or irrelevant In your major field of study?

Some ideas: The recent crying ladies in local showbiz: KC vs Piolo affair is none of our business and yet everyone has made up their minds about it. How is it possible to do an analysis based on gender? The same could be said about the revelations of Mo Twister (ah, he was my student in 1994) regarding the alleged abortion of Rhian. Again, abortion is part of reproductive health concerns, many people can be so judgmental about women revealed to have undertaken this procedure. Again, how might a gendered perspective alter the way people talk about current chismis?
