People can feel differently about the same thing.

KEY POINTS - We are different in many ways. Some ways we can see, and others we cant see (feelings) - Its ok to feel differently about the same thing!

Essential Questions - How would you feel in this situation? How is that different than the little boy/others thought?

Opening We know that we are all different people in this class. We know were different because of things we can see we have different faces, skin, and hair. We are also different because of things we cant see, like our feelings. People can feel differently about the same thing, and we are going to see some examples of this in the book On Monday When It Rained Intro to New Material Read On Monday When It Rained Pages 1: Model explaining how I feel about the scenario: 1. Hm, even though its raining, I would still feel happy because I love to snuggle up in a blanket and read on rainy days. (Read the rest). Oh, he feels disappointed because he really wanted to ride his bike. So, even though rain makes me happy, it doesnt make everyone happy. Students share out their feelings for the rest of the books scenarios and compare them to the little boys feelings. Activity 2 children come up to the front and stand back to back. Teacher reads a scenario and then counts to 3. On 3, the children face the front, showing a facial expression that represents their feelings about the scenario. The two children then explain their feelings, and the class discusses how they were similar/different. Scenarios: 1. Your mom is serving green beans for dinner. 2. You come home from school and realize that your parents surprised you by painting your room purple! 3. You go to the zoo, and the zookeeper asked you to come touch the snake. 4. You just found out that your music class is singing a song in front of the whole school. 5. Your friend got a book about sports in the library and asked if youd like to read it together. 6. Your friend asked you to play tag at recess. Closing What did we learn about the people in our class today?

V I S I O N S E T T I N G Teaching Point

Empathy means that we think about how others are feeling, even though it may be different than what we think.

KEY POINTS - People can feel differently about the same thing - When we think and react to how other people are feeling, we are showing empathy - Showing empathy helps us to be kind, caring friends, and when we care for others in our class, it helps us to be happy and learn more.

Essential Questions What does it mean to show empathy? When you show empathy, you are thinking about how someone else is feeling. Why is it important to show empathy? Showing empathy helps us to be kind friends who care about each other. When we are kind, caring friends, it makes us happy to be in the classroom and we can learn so much more! Opening Weve been talking a lot about what it means to show respect, and today we are going to start learning about the next quality on our rainbow: Empathy! Yesterday we learned that we can all have different feelings about the same things, and its important to remember that when were learning together in school. Showing empathy means that you are thinking and reacting to how someone else is feeling. Intro to New Material Read My Friend Is Sad by Mo Willems Page 5: Piggie is definitely showing empathy on this page because she knows that her friend is sad. What do you think she might do next? (Student answer will likely point to him cheering Gerald up) Oh, so showing empathy could help Piggie be a good friend by cheering him up lets see what she does! Activity Page 24: Oh no, nothing seems to be working! Piggie is showing empathy and trying to be a kind friend and help Gerald feel happy, but she cant figure out what is wrong! What do you think you would do next if you were Piggie? Think, Pair, Share End of book: Wow, Piggie did so much for Gerald after she showed empathy and tried to help him. She is such a kind, caring friend! Can you imagine what would have happened if Piggie had not shown empathy? (Students share whole-group) Wow, so it sounds like showing empathy is really important for being a kind, caring friend. What are some ways that we could show empathy in our classroom? Think, Pair Share I cant wait to see you showing empathy the way you discussed with your partners. When we show empathy, it makes us happy to learn together and we learn a lot more! Closing What does it mean to show empathy? Why is it important to show empathy? MATERIALS.

Empathy 3
V I S I O N S E T T I N G Teaching Point SWBAT explain that showing empathy means that we think of others feelings before we act. KEY POINTS When we think and react to how other people are feeling, we are showing empathy. Showing empathy helps us to be kind, caring friends, and when we care for others in our class, it helps us to be happy and learn more. We show empathy by thinking of others feelings before we act. 1. Stop 2. How would they feel if I did this? 3. Should I still do it? 4. Decide and act. Essential Questions What does it mean to show empathy? What is one way that you could show empathy? Opening Last week, we began discussing empathy, and now we know that showing empathy means that we are thinking about the way other people are feeling. Intro to New Material One way that lifelong learners shows empathy is by thinking of others feelings before they act. I actually showed empathy the other day when I was with my friend, Emily. I was having a lot of fun riding Emilys new bike, though when I looked at her I noticed that she was not smiling and looked a little bit lonely. I really wanted to ride the bike around the block again, but I decided to: 1. Stop 2. Think: How would Emily feel if I did this? 3.Should I still do it? 4.Decide and act I decided not to ride the bike around the block again because it would make Emily feel even more sad and lonely. Instead, I got off the bike and said, Would you like to ride now? She smiled and said yes, so I knew that I made the right choice and made her happy! We can show empathy all the time when we Stop, Think, and Act (teach hand motions to students) Activity

Empathy
Present students with scenario: Pretend that Felix is moving around a lot in line and keeps bumping Aleeah. Felix notices that Aleeah is starting to look angry, but he doesnt feel like standing still, so he keeps moving and bumping her! Would that be showing empathy? No! What should he do to show empathy? Whole group: walk through how Felix should Stop, Think, and Act. New scenario: Its Readers Workshop, and we are all sitting on the carpet ready to learn how to become better readers. Ms. Roth called on Christian to share his prediction in the story, and he looks really excited about it! However, you have a REALLY great prediction you want to share, too! Its so hard to keep to yourself, and you really just want to say it anyway while Christian is talking. Think: How could you show empathy in this situation? Pair Share: How would you show empathy? Why is that showing empathy? Closing What does it mean to show empathy? How can we show it? Why is it important to show empathy? Throughout the day I will look for examples of students showing empathy in this class.

Teaching Point

SWBAT explain the difference between empathy and respect.

KEY POINTS - Respect means that we do the right thing because it is the kind thing to do. - Empathy means that we are thinking of or reacting to the other persons feelings

D E T E R M I N I N G M E T H O D S

Essential Questions What does it mean to show empathy? What does it mean to show respect? How are they different? Why is it important to show them both? Opening MATERIALS. Weve been talking about empathy all week, and you have been doing a fantastic job of showing it in our classroom! So tell me what you think of this: imagine that you are sitting at your table and you decide to share your crayons with your friend. Hes a good friend, and you want to share because its a nice thing to do. Is that showing empathy? (Students responses yes or no) Well actually, Im going to disagree and say that this situation is actually showing respect instead of empathy! Empathy and respect can seem very similar, but let me tell you why I think that it mostly shows respect. Intro to New Material We show respect when we are kind and helpful because its the right thing to do. We show empathy when we are thinking of how someone else is feeling. We might react to situations in certain ways based on how that person is feeling. Let me retell you that situation, but Ill change it a little so that it shows empathy: You notice that your friend is sad, and when you ask why, he says that he wanted to use blue, but there are no blue crayons left. You decide to give him your blue crayon so that he will feel better. The person in that situation was showing empathy because he thought about how his friend was feeling, and then he acted in a way that would make him feel better! This is different than the first situation when nobody was sad that person was showing respect because sharing was the right thing to do. Activity

Empathy
Teacher presents scenarios to the class, and students must decide if the people in the scenario are showing empathy or respect. (some situations may show both, and students should distinguish which parts are showing empathy/respect) Scenarios to discuss: - You see a friend sitting alone at choice time, and she has a sad look on her face. You think that she is lonely, so you walk over and invite her to come read with you. - You are walking out the door, and you notice that your classmate is walking behind you. You stop and hold the door for that classmate. - You are walking in line, and the person in front of you trips, so you reach out your hand and him up. - You really want to read a book with your friend during library time, but when you go over to ask him, he seems very angry and does not want to talk. You decide to let him cool down, and you read a book by yourself. Closing Wow, you are really great and distinguishing between empathy and respect! We will keep practicing for the rest of the day when I see you showing one of these qualities during the day, I will stop and ask you which quality you were showing. We will have such a happy time learning together when we show these qualities, and we will learn so much more! Lets get started!

Opening Boys and girls, it has been so great to see you showing empathy in our classroom this week! Some people have already done things to help the orange in our rainbow to grow (give specific examples). Lifelong learners know how important it is to be happy learners who learn new things every day, and showing empathy helps us to make this happen! Today we are going to make a plan for showing empathy in our class (just like we did for respect). This will stay up in our classroom all year to help us remember! Intro to New Material

MATERIALS.

Empathy G M E T H O D S Present T-chart sorting examples and non-examples (make them into little stories). Teacher has written several scenarios on the t-chart and covered them with paper. Students must decide to which side the scenario belongs: Yes or No. The teacher will then reveal the side to which it belongs. No: Ignore a friend who is sad/happy Laugh at a friend who is embarrassed Yes: Play with a friend who is lonely. Cheer up a friend who is sad. Leave friends alone when they are angry and need to cool down. Celebrate with a friend who is happy. Prompt students to explain rationale for several examples - Who are you showing empathy to? Why is it empathy?
Activity Students Think, Pair, Share to come up with more examples to put on the Yes side of the t-chart Closing Wow, you all had such great ideas! I cant wait to see our rainbow grow when you show empathy in these ways and more during class today!

We can draw ways to show empathy

KEY POINTS - When we think and react to how other people are feeling, we are showing empathy. - Showing empathy helps us to be kind, caring friends, and when we care for others in our class, it helps us to be happy and learn more. .- Drawing ways to show empathy is a good way to remember what weve learned.

Essential Questions What does it mean to show empathy? How did you show empathy in your drawing? Why is it important to show it? Opening Yesterday, we made a fantastic t-chart as a plan for showing empathy in our class. I noticed that you were showing empathy a lot, and it helped us to learn so much yesterday! Today we will draw ways to show empathy because drawing is a very good way to remember things weve learned. Intro to New Material MATERIALS.

I have seen you showing empathy so much this week, and I am so proud of all of you. Have you noticed how much happier everyone is? And when we are happy learning together, we learn more! Way to go! We made a plan on a t-chart and drew ways to show empathy, and today we are going to keep practicing by role playing some scenarios. Intro to New Material I will call up some actors, and then I will tell each actor their role in the scenario. If you are not acting in this scenario, you will respectfully wait while I tell them their parts. After they act out the scenario, we will discuss whether or not it was showing empathy and why! Now, when we are acting out situations, it might feel kind of funny thats normal! However, if we laugh through the whole thing, it probably wont help us to practice. So, if you feel like you might laugh, you can look down at the ground until you are ready to keep watching. That way, we wont disrupt our learning about empathy! Activity Teacher presents scenarios (from t-chart) for students to act out.(whisper to group privately) Students act on the non-example Students discuss Students act out the situation again, this time showing empathy Scenarios: A. Take 1: 1 person crying, 2 people ignore and keep playing Take 2: 1 person crying, 2 people show empathy (class decides how) B. Take 1: 1 person angry, 1 person keeps asking to play with him. Take 2: 1 person angry, 1 person shows empathy (class decides how) C. Take 1: 1 person so excited to go on vacation, 1 person says, So? Take 2: 1 person so excited to go on vacation, 1 person shows empathy Closing Nice work, everyone! I cant wait to see more of this for the rest of the day.

V I S I O N S E T T I N G We can practice showing empathy by creating scenarios in small groups and presenting them to the class. When we think and react to how other people are feeling, we are showing empathy. Showing empathy helps us to be kind, caring friends, and when we care for others in our class, it helps us to be happy and learn more. When we work together to create role plays, we use respectful, accountable talk to work like a team. 1. Decide on 1 topic/scenario (Remember that we all think differently, and we celebrate each others ideas!) 2. Decide roles (May I please play the _____? Yes you may. OR I wanted to play that part, but thats ok, you can. 3. Practice, practice, practice. 4. Perform for the class!

Essential Questions What does it mean to show empathy? How did you show empathy in your scenario? Opening It has been wonderful to see you showing empathy all week, and I love the way that it is helping us to be kind, caring friends! Were learning so much together! Yesterday you did a fantastic job acting out the scenarios I gave you so well, in fact, that today you get to create your own. Youve really shown me that you know what empathy is all about, and I cant wait to see the ways that you show it in your own role plays! Intro to New Material When you create your role plays, you will be in groups of 3. When we create them, we use respectful, accountable talk to work like a team. If we dont work like a team, its not helping us to do our best work and learn! Model with 2 other students how to: 1. Activity In groups of 3, students come up with scenarios that show empathy. Closing Each group presents to the class, and class discusses how the scenario showed empathy.
