Amy Fornecker 12/10/2011 ELD 308 Literacy Time Block: 2 Day-2 Hour Interactive Read-Aloud Introduce text: The

e Bee Tree by Patricia Polacco. Students will listen actively for enjoyment, as well as making predictions and text connections. Reading Mini-Lesson Students will identify examples of onomatopoeia and be able to explain how it enhances comprehension. Students will be able to identify examples of onomatopoeia in text, use it as a reading strategy that enhances comprehension, as well as apply this technique to their own writing. Independent Reading Provide explicit instruction to enhance students reading comprehension, using a form of figurative language: onomatopoeia. Students will silently read a book of their choosing, and respond in their readers notebooks to the prompt: provide 2 examples of onomatopoeia from your text. Teachers role: serve as a model, manage the classroom, confer with students, and use observation to inform teaching. Guided Reading Students will be given explicit instruction in homogeneous groups of readers with a text at their instructional level.

Teachers instruction will be specific and focused, and formed by the anecdotal records taken during independent reading. Writing Mini-Lesson Following a sequence, figurative language will be further explored through the use of alliteration, personification, and, one again, onomatopoeia. Explicit instruction regarding the strategy of improving ones writing through the use of figurative language. Students will engage and learn through teach/model and guided practice. Independent Writing Students will write independently, applying the strategy of figurative writing (onomatopoeia, alliteration, and personification) throughout. Students will be asked to star their examples of figurative language in their readers notebooks for assessment.

Wednesday: 9:00-9:15 am Interactive Read-Aloud Introduce Text: The Salem Witch Trials: An Unsolved Mystery From History By Jane Yolen (NonFiction) Students will purely enjoy the reading of the text, while making predictions and connections throughout. Jane Yolen emphasizes difficult vocabulary words throughout this text; therefore the difficult words will be discussed and explored throughout.

Students will be encouraged to raise their hands for clarification on words they do not know the meaning of. Literature Study (Lit. Circles): Students will be brought together in small heterogeneous groups to discuss a text. Discussion will arise from there own experiences, opinion, and responses to the text. Students will increase their enjoyment of reading. Students will be asked to share with their group some difficult vocabulary words they came across, and work together to discovers the meanings. Teacher will observe the groups and offer support throughout. Reading Mini-Lesson Students will learn how to discover the meanings of difficult vocabulary words throughout a text to increase comprehension. Students will be able to apply three reading strategies: ask a friend, use a dictionary, and use context clues when struggling to find the meaning of a difficult word. Independent Reading: Students will practice their knowledge of the abovementioned reading strategies while reading independently a text of their choice. Students will be assessed through their responses in their readers notebooks to the prompt: Provide a minimum of 2 example of difficult vocabulary words from your text that you do not know the meaning of, select a strategy

Word Study Students will understand and investigate words from the text presented in the interactive readaloud, and build their knowledge of vocabulary. The pattern of words being studied: difficult vocabulary words. Teacher will reinforce the pattern present in the text through explicit instruction. Guided Reading Students will be placed in small homogenous groups, and receive explicit instruction at their appropriate level. Teacher will make sure to emphasize the use of difficult vocabulary, and the strategies for solving them.
