MANISTEE The students of today
are the leaders of tomorrow.
The West Michigan D League princi-
pals are firm believers in that philosophy
and it is rare to find a conference that is
so committed to giving more to its stu-
dents beyond the realm of athletic compe-
tition. On Nov. 30, the league sponsored
the second West Michigan D League
Summit at the St. Joseph Parish Center
in Manistee. It is a program to show the
students good role models from their
communities who exhibit good leadership
qualities.
This is the second year that we have
done this, and all the schools from the
West Michigan D League send two stu-
dents from the 7th to 11th grade levels,
said Manistee Catholic Central principal
Jan Bigalke.
Schools that sent student represen-
tatives to the day-long summit were
Onekama, Bear Lake, Brethren, Manistee
Catholic, Big Rapids Crossroads Charter
Academy, Pentwater, Walkerville and
Baldwin.
Brethren principal Marlen Cordes said
it is a concept that all the principals in the
league embraced. He added that the stu-
dents who are selected to represent their
schools are picked because some specific
qualities.
Bob Gendron, the Pentwater prin-
cipal, came from a conference that had
done this, and they did it with the leaders
in their school, said Cordes. Our teach-
ers nominated students and we chose the
ones that were good leaders.
Bigalke agreed saying she used the
same procedure in selecting the students
from Manistee Catholic Central.
I sent an email to all of my teachers
for students that had the potential to be
leaders, said Bigalke. It wasnt based on
grades, as we wanted students who were
ready to jump to the next level and take
the lead.
Onekama Schools principal Gina
Hagen said that she feels the summit will
really benefit her students. She said it
will help them grow as a person, and is
an added component to the educational
process.
It is an opportunity for the students
to enhance their leadership skills to be
used for the future, and for the rest of
their life, said Hagen.
Bear Lake principal Marci Augenstein
said she used a similar system of selec-
tion. She added a discussion amongst
her, and the teachers picked the final

candidates. She said the
ones that were selected are
good candidates to go back
and spread the word to the
rest of the students at Bear
Lake Schools.
It was definitely the
teachers that did the nomi-
nations, said Augenstein.
I would say that these are
kids that have that poten-
tial to go back with what
they learned today and
share it with the other kids.
They are strong kids who
have leadership qualities.
This opportunity may work
to encourage that, and
bring some of it out more
frequently.
Serving as keynote
speaker of the event was
Baldwin School Board
president Joe Brooks of
Brooks Construction. He
gave an informative talk to
the students that kept their
attention. Brooks talked
generally about leadership
and touched on a great
deal of things from his
own experiences, stressing
the point that they can do
those types of things. It
really brought it down to a
level where they could eas-
ily understand it.
Brooks went to college
at Princeton University,
and stressed to the stu-
dents that you can come
from a small community
and be successful. He told
the students at the time
he might have been afraid
to take that step from a
small town at the time, if
he didnt know what he did
about Ivy League schools.
He really set the tone
for the day, and empha-
sized that when you start
something you should fin-
ish it, said Cordes.
Augenstein said Brooks
also told the students about
an interesting connection
from his days at Princeton.
His roomate in college
dated Michelle Obama for
a time and he talked a little
bit about his connections.
He used a lot of quotes that
were the characteristics of
a leader.
Following that the
students broke out into
four different groups
that rotated to differ-
ent stations. Serving
as presenters in those
break-out sessions were
Mason-Lake Intermediate
School District Director
of Technology Tom
Johnson, Manistee Alliance
for Economic Success
Executive Director Cyndy
Fuller, Michigan State
Police trooper Greg Hubers
and Pentwater business-
man Pat Shinn.
They touched on vari-
ous topics all dealing with
leadership, and how to be a
successful leader.
Big Rapids Crossroads
Charter Academy princi-
pal Ross Meads said the
summit is one of the ways
students from the confer-
ence can get together in
a different manner from
where they usually meet on
the the athletic field. The
league also holds a AAA
banquet in the spring to
recognize students for
academics, athletics and
attitude.
I think one of the
things I like about this
is the West Michigan D
League is more than athlet-
ics, said Meads. This is
for some of the other kids
that show leadership and
that is how we honor the
other kids that are leaders.
Today its not about being
a foe, but being a friend.

LESSONS IN LIFE
STATEPOINT MEDIA
The world is changing and par-
ents need to make sure their chil-
dren are prepared to succeed in an
increasingly globalized economy, say
experts.
The United States is often regard-
ed as a melting pot, a place for peo-
ple of different backgrounds to come
together and ultimately grow alike.
But the truth is that from language to
food to religious practice, unique cul-
tural traditions are all around us.
We must not try to erase dif-
ferences but rather respect them,
even celebrate them, says Rajiv
Malhotra, author of the new book,
Being Different: An Indian
Challenge to Western Universalism
(HarperCollins Publishers). Malhotra
believes we can look to India as an
example of a distinct society that
peacefully integrates many diverse
people.
Alongside reading, writing and
arithmetic, cultural diversity should
be at the forefront of your childrens
lesson plan. But dont just encourage
tolerance. Go a step further.
Tolerance is a patronizing pos-
ture, says Malhotra, We need to
learn to respect, even appreciate and
not merely tolerate religious and cul-
tural differences.
Here are some tips to teach chil-
dren to respect one another as they
become citizens of the world:
n Absorbing the nuances of a
second language is easiest when one
is young, so sign your kids up for a
language class at an early age. Better
yet, learn along with them.
n Pack your bags and take a trip.
Dust off your passport or keep it
domestic. Even within the United
States, there is great opportunity to
be exposed to new cultural experi-
ences.
n Think differently. There are
fundamental differences between the
Western worldview and the Eastern
worldview, say scholars. People from
different countries have different tra-
ditions, religious customs and histo-
ries that shape their thinking. Being
accepting of others means opening
your mind to the idea that there are
different approaches to resolving the
problems impacting our complex
world.
n Read a book. You dont need to
be a globetrotter to learn about other
cultures. Your local librarian can
help you find age-appropriate books
that will introduce children to other
cultures and allow them to explore
them deeply. For example, India has
a rich history and culture that goes
beyond the Western embrace of spicy
foods, yoga and meditation.
n Encourage friendships. Enroll
your children in activities, camps and
programs that foster relationships
with kids of all religious, racial and
economic backgrounds.
n Engage in a substantive dia-
logue with others that explores new
ideas about the world beyond your
backyard. Question your values and
be open to seeing the merit in the
ideas of others, suggests Malhotra,
who founded the Infinity Foundation
to encourage better East-West rela-
tions. For more information about
his new book visit www.beingdiffer-
entbook.com.
n Host a potluck. Invite your
friends over and have them bring
dishes featuring their family recipes.
You may find your circle of friends
is more culturally diverse than you
thought.

By investing the time to teach these lessons, you can contribute toward making schools and communities a
safer place for your kids.
STATEPOINT MEDIA
College no longer is just
a rich learning ground, but
a prerequisite to many of
todays jobs.
With this in mind, par-
ents increasingly are looking
to send their children to
college or go back to school
themselves. And theres no
better time than the present
to talk to your family about
your or your childrens col-
lege dreams.
The transition to post-
secondary education can be
difficult for even the most
prepared families, said
Sharon Darling, president
& founder of the National
Council of Family Literacy
(NCFL). We need to ensure
that more nontraditional
adults are prepared to enter
and succeed in postsecond-
ary education and that
parents are well prepared to
inform and nurture the edu-
cational aspirations of their
children.
Explore Your Options
Its never too early for
children to start thinking
about a future career -- or
too late for grown-ups to
consider a different career.
Make a list of what you
or your child likes to do
and brainstorm potential
careers that match those
skills and interests. Then
explore books about careers,
preferably with your chil-
dren. Preschoolers may
like Career Day by Anne
Rockwell or Caring for
Your Pets: A Book About
Veterinarians by Ann
Owen.
For elementary kids, try
reading Career Ideas for
Kids Who Like Science by
Diane Lindsey and Lindsey
Clasen and other books in
this series. And you can
engage your teen in explor-
ing careers with If You
Could Be Anything, What
Would You Be? A Teens
Guide to Mapping Out the
Future by Jeanne Webster.
Make it a Family Goal
One way to ensure that
dreams come true is to set
goals and implement the
steps to achieve them. But
some long-term goals, like
buying a house or getting a
college degree, take many
smaller steps before you can
accomplish them. Feeling
supported by family while
achieving smaller goals can
help build confidence so that
eventually, the larger goal is
reached.
Families should also take
advantage of free resources.
For example, NCFL has
released multi-media
resources to help people
unfamiliar with navigating
the U.S. college system gain
access to the information
necessary for preparing and
succeeding in college.
Get Involved
When parents are
involved with their chil-
drens school and in their
educational experiences,
their kids are more success-
ful -- not only in school,
but in life. Develop a rela-
tionship with your childs
teacher, ask questions when
you dont understand what
is expected of your child,
and talk to your child every
day about school.
Get your kids thinking about college

PRECIS SYNDICATE
If youre a parent, you
can add one more potentially
awkward but absolutely
critical talk to your to-do
list. While you may have dis-
cussed the risks associated
with sex, smoking, alcohol
and drugs with your child,
if you havent yet talked
about the dangers of risky
online behavior, then this is
an increasingly imperative
conversation to have. The
Internet is now integral to
all of our daily lives and your
job is to help your child form
healthy online connections
without engaging know-
ingly or unknowingly in
risky and compromising
behavior.
Many parents are aware
that digital communications
can bring unwanted conse-
quences. In fact, 83 percent
of parents in a recent survey
reported strong concerns
about what their children are
exposed to online. The need
to have this conversation
doesnt make having it any
more comfortable. Having
the talk about online safety
must focus on personal
boundaries and privacy and
should educate children
about specific and serious
threats to personal safety.
To help parents prepare
for and hold a successful
online protection talk with
their child, global cloud
security leader TrendMicro
has published an eGuide full
of tips for navigating this
sensitive topic, including:
nUse the parental con-
trol features of your security
software to block childrens
access to harmful or inap-
propriate websites. Some
security software, such as
Trend Micro Titanium
Maximum Security 2012,
lets parents set this only
when their kids are using the
computer.
nHow to avoid
unwanted contact, includ-
ing from bullies and sexual
predators, by using the social
networking privacy set-
tings and computer security
software like Trend Micro
Titanium Maximum
Security 2012.
nUse reputable com-
puter security technology,
and keep it up to date. The
National Cyber Security
Alliance (NCSA) encour-
ages all computer users to
Keep a clean machine.
For more information about
the NCSAs Stop. Think.
Connect. campaign, visit
www.staysafeonline.org.
Because not every par-
ent is a technology expert
nor is every child capable of
grasping certain intangible
concepts, the guide offers
novice-friendly language and
illustrations, in addition to
practical tips, to help bridge
gaps in technical under-
standing.

digital exploration within boundaries.
NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Many Americans associate influenza
with the fall, but you may be surprised to
learn that during many flu seasons, influ-
enza activity doesnt peak until winter or
early spring. In fact, virus activity peaked
in February or later in approximately half
of the past 35 flu seasons.
That is why the American Lung
Association is spreading the message
about the importance of influenza vaccina-
tion throughout the winter months and
beyond as part of its Faces of Influenza
campaign. Everyone 6 months of age and
older is recommended for annual immuni-
zation, which is safe and effective and the
best way to help prevent influenza.
With vaccination recommended and
beneficial into the winter months, make it
your New Years resolution to get immu-
nized its not too late, and youll be
helping to protect your health and those
around you in one simple and achiev-
able step. After being immunized, it takes
about two weeks for the body to develop
a protective response to the flu vaccine.
Parents dont forget that children 6
months through 8 years of age receiving a
flu shot for the first time need two doses
approximately one month apart for opti-
mal protection.
We are all faces of influenza and are
recommended by public health officials to
get vaccinated this and every year, said
Norman H. Edelman, M.D., chief medical
officer of the American Lung Association.
Its not too late for family members of
all generations to help protect themselves
from this potentially deadly disease
through immunization.
About Influenza
Influenza is a serious respiratory ill-
ness that kills thousands annually in the
U.S. and hospitalizes even more.
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccina-
tion for everyone 6 months of age and
older. Groups at higher risk of developing
influenza-related complications include:
adults 50 years of age and older; children
6 months to 18 years of age; pregnant
women; anyone with chronic health condi-
tions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease
and diabetes; and residents of long-term
care facilities. The CDC also recommends
a yearly vaccination for those who come
into close contact with high-risk groups,
such as household contacts, caregivers and
health care providers.
Add a flu shot to your list of New Years resolutions

Faces of Influenza celebrity spokesper-
son Kristi Yamaguchi makes influenza
vaccination a priority every year.
