Name tiles honoring family members,
teachers, or coaches are being sold by OA-
SIS (Oroville Area Sports Initiative Sup-
porters). These 6-by-12-inch granite tiles
are being sold for $65. Net proceeds from
this fundraiser will be placed in a desig-
nated fund through OUHSD to be used for
future maintenance and upgrade needs for
Harrison Stadium.
These tiles will be placed on the front
wall of the home bleachers. OASIS goal
is to fill the bleacher walls with name tiles.
Order forms can be obtained from any OA-
SIS member and from the OASIS website
http://orooasis.wordpress.com. The forms
Name Tiles at Harrison Stadium
can also be found in the LPHS and OHS
student stores.
Lake Oroville Monument Company in
Oroville is engraving the names on the
black granite tiles.
OASIS is a group of concerned citi-
zens who, with overwhelming support of
the greater Oroville community, helped
pass a bond in 2008 to renovate Harrison
Stadium. The members of OASIS have an
agreement with OUHSD to raise funds to
be placed in an designated account for the
purpose of major upgrades so Harrison
Stadium will continue to be the state of the
art facility for many years to come.

Make the Most of Your
Gift-Giving Budget this
Holiday Season
(Family Features) The holidays are
a special time of year where friends and
family celebrate the magic of the season
together. And if you're like a lot of people,
you want convenient, budget-friendly hol-
iday gift ideas for everyone on your gift
list. This year, surprise your loved ones
with gifts everyone can enjoy together,
like a cozy night at home with their favor-
ite movies or games.
According to the National Retail Feder-
ation's 2011 Consumer Intentions and Ac-
tions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch,
44.4 percent of consumers have DVDs,
videos or video games on their wish list,
so home entertainment gifts are sure to
please.
Here are some tips to help you maxi-
mize your gift-giving budget and make
new traditions this holiday season, without
sacrificing fun.
Keep track. Carefully managing your
holiday spending on a day-to-day basis
will help you keep your costs in check and
allow you to splurge on a great gift. Keep
track of your budget with free smartphone
apps such as Spend Free, available at
iTunes, or online with a free membership
at www.mint.com.
Keep gift-giving expenses down with
gifts such as Blockbuster By Mail subscrip-
tions, where your friends and family can
receive Blu-ray - at no additional charge
- and DVD movies and video games by
mail, then exchange them for new rentals
at a Blockbuster store.
Make any time movie time. The gift of
entertainment is for everyone - as a host-
ess gift, a stocking stuffer or something for
hard-to-buy-for family members. Person-
alize the entertainment experience with 3-
or 5-disc Build Your Own Box Sets from
your local Blockbuster. They come in a
festive gift box, so you don't even need to
wrap them. Check out the wide range of
movies, TV shows and video games avail-
able online and in stores at www.block-
buster.com.
Create new holiday traditions. Expand
your special family time this holiday sea-
son with affordable entertainment options
such as movies and video games at home.
Rent your favorite holiday movies and
set up a bakery at home rather than buy-
ing holiday treats from the local specialty
store. Or set up a family game tournament
with video games and stay warm on a
frosty winter's night. Once everyone has
mastered one game, you can return it in-
store to keep the fun going.
For movie and game ideas and more
information on a variety of holiday gifts
under $50, visit www.blockbuster.com.

In the quest to find other interesting
tools, Bolts Antique Tool Museum has
begun acquiring kitchen gadgets from the
early 1900s that are sure to make you
wonder how cooks survived without all of
the electronic and specialty gadgets that
we all take for granted today. The exhibit
includes many donated items from local
residents Susie Cunningham and Pat Fore
who each had been collecting kitchen gad-
gets for some time.
The museum opened in 2006 not only
has tools that have been used in the United
States, but also has tools from 4000 years
ago including tools thought to be made
by Egyptians and Romans in 400 B.C. A
Antique Kitchen Gadget Display
barbed-wire collection, old gas pumps,
blacksmith tools and 125 tools represent-
ing 51 different railroads provides insight
into earlier days in the United States. At
last count the museum had over 10,000
tools and continues to grow each day.
A gift shop which has many memorable
items including a special $1.00 table for
tools to take home and the latest addition
of custom greeting cards with a tool flair
that are the creation of Mary Gunderson is
available to make purchases for that spe-
cial tool enthusiast in your life. Museum
founder, Bud Bolt said, Our gift counter
is turning into a gift shop and may just
have that special, unusual item that youre
looking for.
The museum which is located at 1650
Broderick Street in Oroville is open Mon-
day through Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to

Warm Up with Soup's
Simple Goodness
(Family Features) Hearty, homemade,
family-friendly soup is a welcome warmer
on a chilly night - especially during this
busy season.
For instance, this Turkey Mac Soup can
be on the table in 30 minutes, but tastes like
it simmered for hours. Start with leftover
turkey from the holiday meal. Or, if you
prefer, chicken works just as well, if that's
what's on hand. No leftovers? No problem;
use rotisserie turkey or chicken.
Next, a savory combo of sauted veg-
etables, accented with poultry seasoning to
add a quick flavor boost, is simmered in
chicken broth. You can vary the vegetables
according to what's in the fridge, or fam-
ily preferences. Add the turkey and ladle
over cooked elbows for a delicious meal in
a bowl.
Add even more nutritious benefits by
using Dreamfields pasta. Made from durum
wheat semolina, Dreamfields has the taste
and texture of traditional pasta. However,
its unique recipe provides just 5 grams of
digestible carbs and 5 grams of fiber in a
1-cup cooked serving. This makes it ideal
for anyone who wants to help maintain
healthy blood sugar levels, balance energy
and improve digestive health.
Soup's on. Enjoy.
For more great recipe ideas go to www.
dreamfieldsfoods.com.
Turkey Mac Soup
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Makes 8 servings
1 box Dreamfields Elbows
1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
1 cup chopped onion or leek
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup chopped bell pepper
2 cups broccoli slaw
2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
6 cups reduced-sodium, fat free chicken
broth
3 cups chopped or shredded cooked tur-
key
Salt
Black pepper
1. Cook pasta according to package di-
rections. Drain and return to pan, reserving
one cup pasta water.
2. Meanwhile, heat oil in Dutch oven
over medium-high heat until hot. Add on-
ion, carrots, celery and bell pepper; cook
2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add broc-
coli slaw; continue cooking 1 minute or
until vegetables are crisp-tender, stirring
frequently. Stir in poultry seasoning. Cook
and stir to blend into vegetables.
3. Add chicken broth; bring to boil. Re-
duce heat; simmer 5 minutes. Stir in tur-
key; heat through. Add pasta water if more
liquid is desired.
4. Divide pasta among 8 bowls. Ladle
soup over pasta. Season with salt and pep-
per, as desired.

The local chapter of the Sierra Club,
Yahi Group, has donated a collection of
video documentaries to the Butte County
Library which emphasize the dangers of
fracking (hydraulic fracturing), and other
current environmental issues.
The Yahi Group felt that a good use of
some of their conservation funds would be
to purchase and donate the videos in order
to help educate the public about issues of
concern to the Club. The videos are list-
ed by title in the Library Catalog and are
available for free check out at all library
locations. The video collection consists of
the following titles:
Tapped ~ Is clean drinking water an
inalienable right, or is it a privilege like
every other commodity? This question and
many others are at the center of Tapped.
Flow ~ The film makes a convincing

systems, water conservation, and better
water treatment systems.

ment especially in relation to global warm-
ing.

(NAPSI)Theres no place like home
for the holidays and no better place to im-
plement good fire safety practices.
Here are a few tips from the Electrical
Safety Foundation International (ESFI):
If you purchase new decorations, shop
only at reputable retailers. Make sure the
products have been approved for safe use
by a nationally recognized testing labora-
tory.
Carefully inspect each electrical deco-
ration and extension cord before use; dis-
card any damaged items. Cracked sockets,
bare or frayed wires, and loose connections
may cause a serious shock or fire.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets,
which can overheat and start a fire.
If you purchase a live Christmas tree,
check for freshness. A fresh tree will stay
green longer and is less of a fire hazard
than a dry tree. Be sure to keep the stand
filled with water.
For artificial trees, look for the label
fire resistant, indicating that the tree is
more resistant to burning.
Place your tree and other decorations
at least three feet away from heat sources,
like space heaters and the fireplace.
Never use burning candles on or near
your tree.
(NAPSI)During the colder months,
many people can warm up to these four
simple tips from celebrity fitness expert
Jennifer Cohen to help keep up with their
workouts:
Incorporate Exercise Throughout Your
Day: Put free weights at the doorway of
your bedroom and move them from room
to room as you go about the day, doing a
few arm curls each time. At the end of the
day, youll have a great upper body work-
out.
Double Your Trips Up and Down the
Stairs: Have to move laundry? Do it in two
trips with small baskets instead of one, to
burn extra calories and work your ham-
strings and glutes.
Take Advantage of TV Time: Keep
a stretch band in the living room and do
lunges to work on your arms, thighs and
butt while you watch TV. Put the band un-
der your foot and pull up with your arms.
Outdoor Chores Count, Too: Tax-
ing yard work such as raking leaves and
cleaning gutters, chopping wood, scrap-
ing the windshield or shoveling snow can
count toward fitness and weight loss. Rake
leaves for an hour to burn 250 calories and
shovel snow for an hour to burn up to 400
calories.
Cohen says cool fitness gadgets can be
Maximizing Your Cold Weather Workouts
great for motivation. By using a heart rate
monitor, for example, you can track your
intensity level, calories burned and dura-
tion-regardless of whether its yard work
or an intense workout session. At the gym,
heart rate monitors can track your progress
on whatever equipment youre using-exer-
cise bikes, stair-steppers-or during a group
exercise class.
Heart rate is a convenient, accurate,
personalized indicator of the intensity of
your exercise. Using a heart rate monitor
lets you set your goal, create a training
program and use your exercise data to ad-
just the intensity of your workout accord-
ingly. A Polar heart rate monitor can help
bring your workouts to the next level by
optimizing time spent at the gym, exercis-
ing at home or doing outdoor chores.
Its also important to exercise with a
goal in mind, whether that goal is weight
loss, improving your general fitness or
maximizing your performance for a sport-
ing event. Create a training program to help
you meet your goal that includes both car-
dio and strength training. You can devise
a customized workout plan via free sites
such as www.polarpersonaltrainer.com.

Seasonal Fire Safety Tips
Turn off all decorations, and extin-
guish candles and flames before leaving
the house or going to sleep.
Home fires involving cooking peak
on major holidays with traditions of cook-
ing, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Never leave the kitchen when something
is cooking.
Heating equipment also causes a sig-
nificant number of fires. Have your heat-
ing system cleaned and inspected by a
qualified service professional at least once
a year.
Keep space heaters at least three feet
away from anything that can burn, such
as bedding, curtains, furniture, paper, and
clothing.
Turn space heaters off when you leave
the room or go to sleep.
Finally, make sure your home is pro-
tected by an adequate number of smoke
alarms. Smoke alarms should be installed
on every level of the home, inside each
bedroom, and outside each sleeping area.
Test them monthly.
By following these simple steps, you
can help ensure your holidays are memo-
rable for all the right reasons. For more in-
formation, visit www.holidaysafety.org.

Prepare For Winter Driving
Before Jack Frost Arrives
(NAPSI)Drivers should use the
changing seasons as a reminder to engage
in routine tire maintenance.
If youll be driving in areas that typi-
cally experience harsh winters, suggests
Chuck Yurkovich, vice president of glob-
al technology for Cooper Tire & Rubber
Company, consider replacing all-season
tires with a product made specifically for
that climate. The key is to have those dis-
cussions with a trusted dealer before the
first storm hits.
The company has been a proven winter
tire brand for decades, providing high-per-
forming and extensive product lines that
cover more than 90 percent of vehicles,
such as the Weather-master S/T2 and the
Discoverer M+S. All its winter tires in-
clude a patented snow groove technology
for the higher traction of snow on snow
versus snow on rubber.
Even if an area does not typically re-
ceive harsh winter weather, according to
Yurkovich, its important to conduct rou-
tine tire maintenance checks as the seasons
change. Cooper Tire also advises:
Drive cautiously:
Double the distance when braking
anytime conditions are not dry.
Do not assume a four-wheel-drive
vehicle will stop faster than a two-wheel-
drive vehicle.
Always reduce speed during winter
conditions.
When getting winter tires, replace all
four to achieve the handling and traction
benefits.
Check the owners manual to see how
the vehicle should be serviced in cold
weather.
Examine tread:
For winter-weather driving, the more
tread depth, the better. Tire tread depth
should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep
all around. To check tread depth, insert the
edge of a penny into the tread with Lincoln
going in headfirst. If the top of his head is
covered by tread, theres at least a mini-
mum acceptable amount; if the top of his
head is visible, the tire is worn out and its
time to replace it.
While examining the tread, look for
signs of uneven wear or damage such as
cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges.
Test air pressure: Underinflation creates
excessive stress on the tire, while overin-
flation can cause uneven wear in addition
to handling and braking issues.
Check the air pressure regularly.
Follow the guidelines found in the ve-
hicles owners manual or tire placard (or
sticker). A common myth is that the tire
pressure listed on the sidewall is the opti-
mal pressure; in reality, its the maximum
pressure.
Should any of these checks reveal the
need for maintenance, take your car to a
tire dealer for a professional inspection.
For more information on proper tire main-
tenance, visit www.coopertire.com.

Christmas is coming with all
of its hue Red and green and
even some blue. With the holiday
excitement and so much to do, Dont
forget your shot to protect against
u!
Dont let the u ruin your holiday
plans; get vaccinated at the Butte
County Public Health Department
Clinic, next week. Its not too
late to get your u vaccine, says
Butte County
Public Health
Department.
Health Ofcer, Dr.
Lundberg. Flu
season typically
peaks in January
or February and
can last as late as May, we are
encouraging people who have not
yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated
now.
For millions of people each year,
the u can bring a fever, cough, sore
throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle
aches, fatigue, and miserable days
spent in bed instead of at work or
at school. An annual u vaccine
is recommended for everyone 6
months of age and older.
Anyone can get the u, but
some people are at greater risk for
serious u-related complications,
like pneumonia, that can lead to
hospitalization and even death.
For those at greater risk for
complications, getting the u vaccine
is especially important. People at
greater risk include:
Butte County Public Health Wants
Your Holidays To Be Flu-Free
* Children younger than 5 years
old, but especially children younger
than 2 years old
* Pregnant women
* People with certain medical
conditions like asthma, diabetes, or
heart and lung disease
* People 65 years and older
Its also important to get the
vaccine if you care for anyone in one
or more of these high risk groups, or
for babies younger
than 6 months
because they are
too young to get the
vaccine. Getting
the u vaccine is
simple, and its the
most important
thing you can do to protect yourself
and your family from the u, says
Dr. Lundberg.
Flu vaccines are offered in many
locations, including doctors ofces,
clinics, pharmacies and college
health centers. The Butte County
Public Health Department will be
offering u vaccine for $2 in Chico
and in Oroville on the following
dates:
Chico
695 Oleander Ave.
Wednesday, December 14th
2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Oroville
202 Mira Loma Dr.
Wednesday, December 14th
2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
For more information please call

Now is the perfect time to get
your u vaccine if you havent done
so already. A u vaccine will help
you and your family stay healthy for
the holidays. For more information

Food Fun with Lanny Dragon
Many ordinary dessert and
food items change character and
importance simply by adding
some dcor or making a special
presentation. Consider what candles
and some lettering do for the common
cake as it becomes a Birthday Cake!
This issue of Food Fun considers
the jelly roll, an average sponge
cake baked thin on a cookie sheet
and rolled up with a lling inside.
Now the ordinary jelly roll will be
decorated and converted into a Yule
Log dessert!
Judy and I each have fond jelly
roll memories from childhood. She
argued with her 4 sisters over the
crisper, sweeter end trimmings.
There was no contest in my family
since it was well known that my
grandfather prized the trimmings
more than anyone, whereas I
treasured the inventive llings my
mother created.
Since it is a traditional dessert of
France, our son made a Bche de Nol
to share with his high school French
class several years ago. We share that
recipe with you!
Bche de Nol
Bche de Nol is a Yule log-shaped
cake. Jelly is the traditional lling for
this dessert, but you can serve it lled
with pudding, pie lling, or whipped
cream (vanilla, coffee or chocolate).
Cake Recipe:
12 cup all-purpose our
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
4 egg whites
14 tsp. salt
12 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
12 cup lling
12 tsp vanilla extract
Directions:
Grease and lightly our a 15x10x1-
inch jelly roll pan; set aside.
Stir together our, baking powder
and salt. In a small mixer bowl beat
egg yolks and vanilla at high speed of
electric mixer about 5 minutes or till
thick and lemon-colored. Gradually
add the 1/3 cup sugar, beating till
sugar dissolves. Thoroughly wash
beaters.

whites at medium speed till soft
peaks form. Gradually add the 12
cup sugar; continue beating at high
speed till stiff peaks form. Fold yolk
mixture into egg whites. Sprinkle
our mixture over egg mixture; fold
in lightly by hand.
Spread batter evenly into pan.
Bake in a 375 oven for 12 to 15
minutes or till done.
Immediately loosen edges of
cake from pan; holding pan with pot
holders, quickly invert and shake
gently over a towel sprinkled with
sifted powdered sugar (to help keep
the cake from sticking to towel.). If
desired, trim ends; reserve trimmings
to use as decor. Starting with narrow
end, roll warm cake and towel
together; cool completely on a wire
rack. Its necessary to roll the cake
while its still warm to prevent tearing.
Roll up 1 or 2 pieces of the
reserved trimmings into wheels
to use later as branches. Use
toothpicks to hold their shape.
Carefully unroll the cooled
cake and the towel; spread cake with
lling within 1 inch of edges. Roll
up cake. Place cake on serving platter
seam side down. Ice and decorate.
To serve, slice crosswise into 1-inch
slices. Makes 10 servings.
Decorating:
The simplest icing to use is a can
of your favorite prepared chocolate
frosting; if you wish, make your own,
enough to frost one cake.
Once the cake is cooled, lled and
rolled, spread a layer of chocolate icing
on it; drag the tines of a dinner fork
to rough up the icing to make it look
like tree-bark. If you plan to make 1
or 2 branches, carefully place the
cake wheels on the sides of the log;
be sure to remove the toothpicks. Use
more frosting to cover them, too.
Put about 14 cup powdered sugar
in a small sieve and gently tap it over
the frosted log to look like snow. You
can add miniature pine cones, small
pieces of plastic pine needles or holly,
or small marzipan mushrooms
available at specialty stores if you
wish.

Keeping Holiday
Spending In
Check
(StatePoint) The holiday season
is in full swing and the stores are
packed. But dont let the holiday
shopping rush force you to
overspend.
This year, smart shoppers are
taking advantage of free mobile
apps so they can establish holiday
budgets and keep track of their
spending on-the-go.
For instance, Mint.coms
mobile applications (available for
iPhone, Android and iPad) enable
shoppers to establish a holiday
budget and stick to it. With charts
indicating how much you have
left to spend, and email and SMS
alerts informing you when youre
nearing your limit, this app helps
shoppers hang on to their green
this jolly season.
So get out there and shop smart.

(NAPSI)When the partys at your
place, you can be sure to feel secure that
safety is in attendance if you follow these
tips from the experts at the Electrical Safe-
ty Foundation International:
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms and make sure your home is pro-
tected by an adequate number of alarms.
Both types of alarms should be installed on
every level of the house and outside each
sleeping area. You should also put smoke
alarms inside each bedroom.
Share your family fire escape plan
with any overnight guests.
Make sure halls, stairs and doorways
are properly illuminated and free of clutter
that could hinder an escape during a fire
emergency. Use night-lights in hallways
and bathrooms.
Inspect all decorations, cords and out-
lets for damage before use.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets,
which can overheat and start a fire.
Dont run electrical cords across door-
ways or in high-traffic areas, where they
pose a tripping hazard.
Keep decorations, gifts and other
combustibles at least three feet from heat
sources or open flame.
Never leave an open flame unattended,
including the fireplace.
Stay in the kitchen when something
is cooking. Unattended cooking is a major
cause of home fires.
Use space heaters properly and safely.
Keep them out of high-traffic and exit ar-
eas, and at least three feet from anything
that can burn.
Turn off and unplug all decorations
before leaving home or turning in for the
night.
Keep young visitors safe by preparing
your home before they arrive:
If your home is not already child-
proof, install tamper-resistant receptacles
or use safety covers on all unused electri-
cal outlets, including on extension cords.
Store breakables, candles, matches
and other potentially dangerous items in
inaccessible or locked areas.
Dont forget to put away small items,
like buttons, coins and jewelry, which are
choking hazards.
Use safety gates at the top and bottom
of stairways to keep babies and toddlers
safe.
Make sure children are supervised
at all times in the kitchen and anywhere
space heaters, candles or fireplaces are be-
ing used.

Continuing a 60-year tradition, UNI-
CEFs holiday cards and gifts collection in-
cludes an array of gift ideas for men, wom-
en and children of all ages. From puzzles to
home dcor and scarves, a portion of sales
from each item will support programs that
save, protect and improve the lives of mil-
lions of children in more than 150 coun-
tries worldwide. To shop online or for more
information, visit www.shopcardsandgifts.
unicefusa.org.
UNICEF holiday greeting cards may
also be purchased by calling (800) 553-
1200, and at Pier 1 Imports, IKEA, select
Hallmark Gold Crown stores and Barnes &
Noble stores. Pier 1 Imports and IKEA will
donate 100 percent of the purchase price of
each holiday card pack, and IKEA will also
donate an additional $1 per pack sold. The
Pier 1 card collection will feature the win-
ning design from this years Annual Pier 1
Imports/UNICEF Greeting Card Contest.
Inspired Giftssuch as Therapeutic
Spread, Measles Vaccines, mosquito nets
and morecan make an immediate and
dramatic difference in the lives of children
in need and may be purchased online at
www.inspiredgifts.org.
Partner companies conducting activities
supporting UNICEF this holiday season
include: IKEA, Gucci, Disney by FEED
Projects, American Airlines and Delta Air
Lines.
Through December 24, with every pur-
chase of IKEAs Soft Toys for Education
collection, including stuffed animals, fin-
ger puppets and an accompanying book,
the IKEA Foundation will donate one euro
(approximately $1.35) to support UNI-
CEF and Save the Children education pro-
grams.
Since its inception in 2003, IKEAs
Soft Toys for Education has raised $47.5
million in support of education programs,
including UNICEFs Schools for Africa
initiative, helping UNICEF provide 5.5
million children in 11 of Africas poorest
countries with access to a quality educa-
tion.
In celebration of Guccis seven-year
partnership with UNICEF, which has
raised over $10 million dollars, Gucci Cre-
ative Director Frida Giannini has designed
an updated version of the best-selling Gu-
cci for UNICEF Sukey bag. Twenty-five
percent of the retail price for each bag sold
in Gucci stores and online through Febru-
ary 28 will benefit UNICEFs Schools for
Africa initiative. Gucci also announced a
$250,000 donation in honor of its partner-
ship with UNICEF and the release of the
luxury edition tribute book Gucci: The
Making Of... The latest FEED initiative
benefiting UNICEF celebrates Disneys
beloved attraction through the Disney Its
A Small World collection, inspired by the
original artwork of Mary Blair.
Items from the collection include a tote,
bib, infant bodysuit and pants set, and a tee
for girls and boys, available at Nordstrom
stores in the U.S. and online. For each
FEED Our Small World product pur-
chased, FEED will make a donation to help
UNICEF provide children with an entire
years worth of vitamin A supplements.
Other supporters are helping this holi-
day season as well. Through January 15,
2012, for every $1 donated to the U.S.
Fund for UNICEF at www.unicefusa.org/
aa, American Airlines AAdvantage
program members will earn two AAdvan-
tage miles in return (minimum donation of
$10 and maximum award of 2,000 miles
per AAdvantage member). Delta Air Lines
SkyMiles members can also put their un-
used frequent flier miles to good use by do-
nating them to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF
at www.delta.com/skywish.

Gardening
with Alex
Alexandra Heath
As we approach the end of the year, most
of us feel compelled to conduct a brief re-
view of our accomplishments and failures.
And were encouraged to make New Years
Resolutions that hopefully inspire us to live
better or at least more consciously during the
coming year. I like to think of this years end
as a time for endings and beginnings, where
I put aside those ideas, beliefs and opinions
that dont serve me and seek out new ways of
thinking that will be useful for me in the year
ahead. With that in mind, here are some ideas
for you to consider:
Make friends with Nature. I dont mean
in a recreational sense, but with the acknowl-
edgment that we humans are only a tiny part
of the great web of lifeand not the most
important part either. Something to do dur-
ing 2012: spend part of each day outside in
a natural setting. This could be a park or a
path alongside the river or even a vacant lot
lled with what we call weeds. Then lis-
ten; observe; let yourself relax into a sense of
belonging on this earth. Learn about the crea-
tures we share this planet withthe birds,
animals, insects, plants, trees, rivers, moun-
tains. Modern physics is beginning to discov-
er what the native peoples of North America
have always knownthat everything is alive
and that we are all part of a vast energetic
web. During 2012 learn how to become a
conscious member of that community.
Become responsible for yourself. We live
in a society that frequently seeks to blame
someone or something else for our troubles,
failures, or disappointments. This is a child-
ish attitude. According to the Buddhists, ev-
eryone has a monkey mind that chatters at
us all the time and the nature of that monkey
mind is that it exhibits the emotional charac-
teristics of a 9 to 11 year-old in that it wants
to get what it deserves (Ive been working
hard so I deserve to have a new car/toy/dress/
electronic gizmo, whatever) and it wants
to stay out of trouble (its not my fault, its
someone elses.) During 2012, learn to take
responsibility for yourself. A way to do this is
to grow your own food or at least learn how
to garden. Many people do not know how
to cook, so even if they do grow something
they dont know how to prepare it. Learn to
cook. Ask a neighbor to help you learn or
take a class. The local Seventh Day Adventist
church offers cooking and nutrition classes,
and you dont have to be a member to take
advantage of them.
Become part of your community. The
great myth of America is that we are all
rugged individualists who can pull our-
selves up by our own bootstraps. This is
nonsense, as well as destructive. It places the
blame for failure on each individual giving
no acknowledgment to the forces of social,
economic or political oppression that cause
people to live in poverty, despair and power-
lessness. Only community provides the prac-
tical framework for individual success and
well-being. In one town, some residents of
an apartment complex were able to gain the
use of a vacant lot adjacent to the complex.
They started to transform the weed-lled
eld into a community garden. Eventually
nearly every resident became involved in the
project. When interviewed about the results
of the project, one father said that his chil-
dren stopped sitting in front of the TV and
were outdoors more often, getting exercise
and starting to eat the vegetables they were
learning to grow. He liked that he was get-
ting to know his neighbors as people and
developing friendships and working relation-
ships with them. He appreciated being part
of a community and having others to call on
for help when needed. During 2012, get to
know your neighbors, develop a community
garden, maybe even learn how to barter for
goods and services so that everyone can feel
needed and useful.
The end of the year is an opportunity to
end outmoded ideas and beliefs. Let yourself
start anew to build the kind of world you want
to be a part of and encourage others to join
you. Margaret Mead, a famous anthropolo-
gist who traveled around the world studying
primitive cultures, said, Never doubt that a
small group of thoughtful, committed citi-
zens can change the world. Indeed, it is the
only thing that ever has.
