CMJ 102 Fundamentals of Interpersonal Communication Final Group Project This final assignment is worth 100 points of your

r final grade (it substitutes for a final exam). The class will be divided into 5 groups. Each will have a different interpersonal communication topic for which they will be responsible for presenting to the rest of the class. The purpose of this project is NOT to re-teach us what we have already read from our texts, but to find new information that will supplement our understanding of your interpersonal communication topic. Within your groups you will need to decide how to further divide your overarching topic into related subtopics so that each group member has an area of research to be responsible for. The objective is to find and present material that will be both informative and interesting. Each person will also have to write an individual paper on their specific subtopic using 3 scholarly sources. Your grade for this project will be determined by your performance on 3 tasks: 1. Group Presentation (All members will receive the same grade) = 50 points 2. Group Member Evaluation (You grade each others performance) = 10 points 3. Individual Paper (Independent research using 3 scholarly sources) = 40 points Attention All 3 parts of this project must be completed in order to receive any credit. Group Presentation Guidelines (50 points) The purpose of this part of the project is to work together as a group to develop a presentation that demonstrates a deeper understanding of one area of interpersonal communication. Your group is responsible for the entire class period (45 minutes to present and 5 minutes for questions). You must follow the requirements listed below: All group members must participate equally; everyone must speak. Demonstrate group cohesiveness (meaning that there should be transitions between speakers that link the entire presentation together and you should NOT be surprised by what your other group members are saying/doing). Demonstrate an understanding of the topic. Inform/teach the class about your topic and the research each person conducted. Focus on issues of INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION o Stop repeatedly and ask yourself: Does my topic still have an interpersonal focus? This could be the groups biggest pitfall. Use effective delivery techniques (vocal cues, eye contact, flow/transitions/coordination between presenters and subtopics). Cite sources appropriately. If you read or tell the class a statistic, definition, or fact found in your research, TELL the class where you found it and who said it. Include an exercise or activity that illustrates at least one point in your presentation. Explain how the activity relates to your topic (give a recap after your activity). Involve the audience. Time management for the group and between the members is crucial. Use visual aids only if they enhance your presentation.

Be creative in developing a presentation format. Do NOT just stand there and read the informationdo something interesting and unique.

On the day of your presentation, your group must hand in to me ONE outline for the entire presentation. This should be typed, clearly organized (intro, body, conclusion format), and it should clearly identify who is doing what and in what order. The outline is worth 10 points for the group presentation grade. Group Member Evaluations (10 points) As a member of a small group there are certain responsibilities that come with that role. It is up to each member to do his/her fair share of the work. This experience should be enjoyable and fun as well as involving and rewarding. During your presentation I will be grading your group on its final product (for which you will receive the same grade, but I also want to hear an honest assessment of how you think each person performed throughout the entire process. You must anonymously evaluate the members of your group (including yourself). For each evaluation, you must numerically score their participation and write a brief explanation as to why you think they deserve the grade you have given. I will collect those after your groups presentation, so keep track of: Who shows up and who is on time to meetings both in and outside of class time. Group members contributions of ideas. Group members enthusiasm for the project. Each persons ability and willingness to work cohesively with the group. Be Honest! Your performance on these evaluations is worth 10% of the final project grade. Individual Paper Guidelines (40 points)
