Introduction
The Graduate and Undergraduate Handbook aims to provide Engineers Australia Student and Graduate members with the resources to begin the search for vacation employment or graduate employment. This handbook gives undergraduate students and graduates the details of organisations that may offer vacation employment or graduate employment in the following year. These details include items such as the best contact person, closing dates for applications and the sort of work the company and student may undertake. The handbook also provides resources for job planning which will be useful when preparing for your career as an engineer. Students and graduates are encouraged to use the information contained in this handbook to investigate as many opportunities as possible. The information within the handbook was obtained from engineering organisations based in South Australia, interstate and overseas. Engineers Australia expresses our thanks to all organisations that have demonstrated their support for the future of engineering in South Australia by participating in this handbook. We hope that the information contained in this handbook is valuable in your search for employment or work experience and we look forward to working with you throughout your career. Regards

Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd FIEAust EngExec Division President Engineers Australia South Australia Division

2011 Year of Humanitarian Engineering

Engineers Australia is proud to announce that 2011 is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering a year in which we will recognise the role of engineering in improving quality of life and disaster recovery. Our goal is to promote the significance and importance of humanitarian engineering to both the engineering profession and wider community so that humanitarian engineering receives the necessary support in Australia and abroad and continues to make a difference. Humanitarian engineers already do amazing work across the globe. But theres still much more that needs to be done. Right now, 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation. One quarter of the worlds population dont have access to electricity. 1.1 billion people have inadequate access to water. These are things that many of us take for granted (source: http://www.globalissues.org). Imagine if we didnt rise to the challenge Fortunately, many Australian companies and not-for-profit organisations already work tirelessly to improve conditions for disadvantaged communities. Throughout 2011, we will showcase humanitarian engineering stories and hopefully inspire more people to get involved. For more information about the Year of Humanitarian Engineering see http://makeitso.org.au/year-of-humanitarian-engineering/

Development Beyond Graduation

The Professional Development Program (PDP)

The Engineers Australia Professional Development Program is the preferred route to achieve Chartered Status in one of the three occupational categories: Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng); Chartered Engineering Technologist (CEngT); and Chartered Engineering Officer (CEngO). The first few years of a graduate engineers experience is vital to their development as a competent and responsible engineer. This period is referred to as professional formation. Employers stand to reap enormous benefits from enabling graduates to analyse and record this formative experience in a way that optimises achievement of professional competencies. This is facilitated by the appointment of an appropriate mentor within the enterprise to oversee the graduates progress.

Chartered Status (CPEng, CEngT & CEngO)

Ahead of you soon are two important bridges to cross; passing your final exams and finding your first job as a professional engineer. When you commence working as a professional engineer you will be entering yet another steep learning curve; learning by doing. You will commence and continue to develop and demonstrate a range of competencies throughout your working life. After several years in the work force, depending upon your abilities and experiences, you should be in a position to be able to satisfy Engineers Australias National Generic Competency Standards in order to become a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). Realistically, unless you have had extensive pre-graduating experience, this will take you from three to five years. The status of Chartered Professional Engineer is the benchmark in Australia for the fully qualified professional engineer, who is competent to practice independently and ethically in his or her field of engineering. By keeping your Chartered Status (CPEng) current and maintaining the required level of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) you may qualify for the National Professional Engineers Register (NPER). The NPER is a national government sponsored, independently directed public register that is administered by Engineers Australia. Being registered on the NPER means that people from all over the world, be they clients, employers or others, are able to verify your engineering credentials with confidence by simply visiting the website, www.nerb.org.au. For more information about Chartered Status or the Professional Development Program please visit www.engineersaustralia.org.au or contact the South Australia Division office on 08 8202 7100.

More Information On Networking

Networking could be your biggest key to success and being in the right place at the right time can give you access to some of your biggest opportunities. Each engineering discipline has a related national college which is administrated by Engineers Australia. Each of these national colleges has a South Australia branch and a number of these branches participate in joint technical programs with other like minded technical entities, as well as holding their own functions. Engineers Australia invites members to participate in the CPD programs of these many technical and special interest groups, as well as our societies, which provide numerous opportunities for networking. In addition to offering excellent networking prospects, these meetings also provide a significant social experience for members. There are also a great many opportunities to mingle with some of the top engineering professionals at the major division events such as the Sir Eric Neal Address and the Engineering Excellence Awards. Through the division you can also participate in a number of volunteer opportunities, which can be rewarding personally as well as professionally. For more information on upcoming events please visit www.engineersaustralia.org.au/events or contact the South Australia Division office on 08 8202 7100.
