Quotes -"And this also has been one of the dark places of the earth (ch. 1 Par. 8) - "The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky-seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness." II.

Control two: The constant use of imagery in the book shows the struggle between good and evil in comparison to light and dark. A. White Men compared to the Black natives 1. Conrad shows that white or light is not always good in that the white men mistreat the black natives. There is a different take on the light and dark or the good and evil. 2. quotes -Six black men advanced in a file, toiling up the path. They walked erect and slow, balancing small baskets full of earth on their heads, and the clink kept time with their footsteps. Black rags were wound round their loins, and the short ends behind waggled to and fro like tails. (ch. 1 par 37) - "Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair. (ch. 1 par. 39) - ...nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom... He had tied a bit of white worsted round his neck ch. 1 par 40) B. The background was sombre -- almost black. The movement of the woman was stately, and the effect of the torchlight on the face was sinister. C. Nature

1. Conrad uses the images of the sun, shadows, the jungle, night, fog, and others natural images to show how the light and darkness in nature symbolizes the good and evil in man. 2. quotes -The edge of a colossal jungle, so dark-green as to be almost black, fringed with white surf, ran straight, like a ruled line, far, far away along a blue sea whose glitter was blurred by a creeping mist. (ch. 1 par. 30) -A blinding sunlight drowned all this at times in a sudden recrudescence of glare. (Ch1. Par. 35) - When the sun rose there was a white fog, very warm and clammy, and more blinding than the night (ch. 2) - We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness. (ch. 2) III. Control three: The saying actions speak louder than words is very true in the Heart of Darkness as the actions of the characters show the theme of good and evil in man. A. White Europeans/Pilgrims 1. Conrad shows the evil in the white man and how the nameless characters like the pilgrims have no conscience. 2. quotes - 'What a row the brute makes!' said the indefatigable man with the moustaches, appearing near us. 'Serve him right. Transgression -- punishment -- bang! Pitiless, pitiless. That's the only way (CH. 1) - . They wandered here and there with their absurd long staves in their hands, like a lot of faithless pilgrims bewitched inside a rotten fence. The word 'ivory' rang in the air, was whispered, was sighed. You would think they were praying to it. (ch. 1) B. Kurtzs methods of obtaining ivory and his savagery

1. Kurtz is the ultimate example of the good and evil in mans heart. Kurtz had good intentions in the beginning but was turned savage by his experience in the Congo and his lust for ivory. 2. quotes: - 'To speak plainly, he raided the country,' I said (ch. 3) Well, he wanted it, and wouldn't hear reason. He declared he would shoot me unless I gave him the ivory and then cleared out of the country, because he could do so, and had a fancy for it, and there was nothing on earth to prevent him killing whom he jolly well pleased. (ch. 3) I tried to break the spell -- the heavy, mute spell of the wilderness -- that seemed to draw him to its pitiless breast by the awakening of forgotten and brutal instincts, by the memory of gratified and monstrous passions - "'The horror! The horror!'

B. Marlows decision between Kurtz and the Manager 1. In the end Marlow still chooses Kurtz over the Manager because in his eyes the Manager was the same from the start. He had no heart or conscience for good while Kurtz did in the beginning. 2. quotes - Soul! If anybody ever struggled with a soul, I am the man (ch. 3) - 'Nevertheless I think Mr. Kurtz is a remarkable man,' I said with emphasis. He started, dropped on me a heavy glance, said very quietly, 'he WAS,' and turned his back on me. My hour of favour was over; I found myself lumped along with Kurtz as a partisan of methods for which the time was not ripe: I was unsound! Ah! but it was something to have at least a choice of nightmares. (ch. 3)
