The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington offers a Ph.D. in the field of Rehabilitation Science. The degree program is designed to be interdisciplinary in nature and focuses on the objectives of increased psychosocial and physical function in individuals as well as the effects of related social and health care policy. Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University offers a distance education Ph.D. in the field of physical therapy for those who are already practicing physical therapists. The degree program was founded with the intention of creating an additional career pathway for physical therapists to serve as educators, health care leaders, research specialists and advanced clinicians. Those holding a master's degree or higher who enter the program can complete a total of 60 credit hours in the field that include 12 hours of core courses in the fields of ethics, biostatistics and research methods and design. The Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina offers a Ph.D. in the field of exercise science with three possible emphases that are closely related to the field of physical therapy: motor control and rehabilitation, applied physiology and the health aspects of physical activity. Each program requires the completion of 60 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree and 30 credit hours beyond the master's degree.
