Job Title: Reporting to: Responsible for: Location: Salary: Holidays: Job Purpose: To supervise the day-to-day running of the cafe in accordance with the aims and objectives of Mahdlo. Caf Supervisor Cook (part time) Administration Manager Cook Mahdlo (Oldham Youth Zone), Egerton Street, Oldham 9.00/hr 12.07% of hours worked

Context of the post: An iconic state-of art Youth Zone, is under construction in Oldham and due to open in March 2012. Attracting young people from across the borough with its fantastic facilities, the Youth Zone will provide positive activities and practical support, especially for those who are disadvantaged. The aim is to enable them to make constructive use of their leisure time and to raise their aspirations. The centre will be open seven nights a week, at weekends and during school holidays. The Youth Zone will also develop and deliver other projects to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in the area. 5 million capital funding is secured and building work is well under way on the three-storey building which will have a dedicated sports hall, a climbing wall, gym, boxing ring, dance and performing arts and music spaces. Also included are a cafe, games and social areas and an outdoor all-weather pitch. Duties and Responsibilities: Planning menus that are nutritious, affordable and appropriate for different dietary requirements and ethnic /cultural/ personal tastes Oversee and participate in the preparation and cooking and serving of main meals snacks and beverages in accordance with the agreed menus and ensuring appropriate separation in the preparation of halal and non halal food Ensure menus are displayed showing choices Determine quantities to be cooked and size of portions to be served to minimize waste and support healthy eating Sourcing and ordering of stock (in line with financial regulations), checking quantity and quality of stock received following up on any deficiencies with suppliers and create stock control procedures and ensure they are adequate and kept up to date.

Arrange staffing rotas for the caf. Oversee and participate in clearing tables, washing and cleaning of crockery, utensils, kitchen equipment work surfaces, floors and dining area to ensure that the necessary hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the kitchen and dining room as appropriate. Ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations, that the appropriate clothing including head wear is worn at all times and that a high standard of personal hygiene is maintained by yourself and all others using or working in the kitchen Ensure all kitchen equipment is regularly checked and any faults/repairs required are reported to the Maintenance Officer. Ensure food is stored correctly and at correct temperatures. Recording of all high risk food temperatures on delivery and prior to service, if applicable. Operating the tills system accurately, cash handling and the subsequent financial administration in line with financial regulations. Maintain a clean working environment as set out in the cleaning schedule by ensuring regular cleaning of all work surfaces, storerooms and ancillary areas. Undertake such other additional duties which may result from changing circumstances. Managing the tuck shop Disposal of waste appropriately and in line with Mahdlos agreed policies Participate in staff meeting, staff training and staff supervision and appraisal To effectively manage other catering staff and volunteers in line with Mahdlos HR procedures ensuring they are welcomed and feel an integral and valued part of the Mahdlo team. All duties must be carried out in accordance with Health & Safety and Health and Hygiene regulations, nationally and locally agreed Codes of Good practice and Mahdlos policies in particular Child Protection, Equal Opportunities and Fire procedures. Ensure any incidents or concerns are appropriately reported. Reporting comments, behavior or incidents which are inappropriate in a setting with children and young people and understand the process for doing so. Support any other duties required of you as may reasonably be determined by your supervisor. General hours of work: The exact working hours will be agreed at point of interview but provisionally we are looking for the Caf Supervisor and Cook to cover the following work periods: Monday, Wednesday and Friday Senior Club 3-8.30pm Tuesday and Thursday Junior Club 3-7.30pm Saturday 6pm-9pm Sunday 9.30 1.30pm The Caf Supervisor will have additional planning hours. The total hours will be 20-25/week. Additional hours will be available during school holidays if desired. Essential Desirable Qualifications
Basic Food and Hygiene Certificate essential Advanced Food and Hygiene Certificate desirable NVQ Level 3 in Catering (or equivalent) Experience Experience managing a catering environment essential Experience of creating healthy and a diverse range of food on a tight budget Working in a customer facing environment Working within a team and working independently Skills Ability to create a cafe bar selection of home cooked, nutritious food that will appeal to young people aged 8 - 21 yrs, for 100+ covers per day Ability to create a range of choices including for those with specific dietary requirements (based on medical, cultural, religious or personal needs) Ability to supervise other cooks and volunteers Ability to ensure a high standard of healthy and safety and excellent standard of hygiene in the working environment Efficient with good organisational skills A positive attitude and commitment to provide good service Basic IT skills with the ability to use a till The ability to stay calm under pressure, to work fast and to a consistently high standard Be able to manage stock control Able to work on own initiative Ability to form positive relationships with colleagues and work as a team Personal Attributes Interest in working in a youth work setting and demonstrate a commitment to the goals and drivers behind Mahdlo Enthusiasm and ability to contribute to the successful development of Oldham Youth Zone Interested in helping young people Welcoming and approachable Extremely good time keeper Willing to work positively to ensure a good environment for all of our young members A good understanding of Oldham and its local communities A willingness to work unsociable hours when required CRB clearance and committed to Safeguarding children
