Non Encapsulated Receptors

Type Site Nociceptor -Epidermis -Corneal mucosa -CT of tympanic membrane and dental pulp -Mostly unmyelinated -Free nerve endings that penetrate basement membrane and branch freely between epithelial cells -Detect pain Thermoceptor -Dermo-epidermal junction at papillary layer parallel to skin surface Plexus of Bounet (Peritrichial free nerve ending) -Ramify around hair follicle Merkels Disc -Deep layer of epidermis

Structure

-Mostly unmyelinated -Free nerve endings that ramify in papillary layer of skin -Detect temperature

-Unmyelinated -Free nerve endings -No Schwann cells -Slight movement and touch

Function

-Unmyelinated nerve endings that penetrate the basement membrane and end as tactile discs associated with Merkels cells in basal layer of skin - Mechanoceptor for touch and pressure

Encapsulated Receptors
Type Meissners Corpuscles -Dermal papillae especially in thick skin: -Palmar surface -Plantar surface -Nipples -Lips Pacinian Corpuscles Krause End Bulbs Ruffinis Corpuscles Muscle Spindle Tendon Spindles Golgi Tendon Organs -Musculo-tendinous

Site

Structure

-Small encapsulated lying perpendicular to the surface of skin -Consists of flattened Schwann cells and collagen fibres arranged transversely in corpuscle

-Dermis and hypodermis of skin: -Fingers -External genitalia -Breast -Skeletal muscle -Joint -Tendon -Viscera -Large encapsulated oval corpuscle -The core is formed of 30-60 concentric layers of flattened cells (modified Schwann cells and fibroblasts) -The layers are separated by intracellular spaces

-CT of dermis -Conjunctiva -External genitalia

-Deep in dermis (more in the soles) -Joint

-Skeletal muscle near musculo-tendinous junctions

-Small spherical (bulblike) structure of CT surrounded by thin capsule

-Small elongated structure of CT surrounded by thin capsule and oriented parallel to skin surface

-Encapsulated fusiform structure attached to skeletal muscle fibres by its ends -As the muscle is stretched, the spindle is stimulated -Small modified

-Same structure as muscle spindle but smaller and contain a group of collagen fibres instead of intrafusal muscle fibres

containing collagen fibres and body fluids -Appears like a sliced onion

Innervations

Losses its myelin sheath enters the corpuscle runs a spiral course gives branches around the corpuscle Mechanoceptor (slight touch for tactile discrimination)

Losses its myelin sheath enters the corpuscle runs in the long axis through a central core ends in an expanded near the opposite pole Mechanoceptor (touch, pressure, vibration)

Enters the bulb gives unmyelinated branches terminate with ball-like ending

Enters the side of corpuscle losses its myelin sheath branches repeatedly between collagen fibres

muscle fibres (intrafusal muscle fibres) which present in the interior of spindle cavity filled with gelatinous substance Both afferent and efferent pierce CT capsule and supply muscle fibres

Function

Mechanoceptor

Mechanoceptor (pressure)

Stretching muscle

Afferent losses its myelin sheath enters the spindle gives unmyelinated branches ramifies between collagen fibres Tension of muscle
