The Nation of Alftiaria

Summary Ecology
Chief climate is temperate with blended forests. There are many mountainous ridges, fencing in the country, which is on either side of the Great Dividing Sea. A chief worry for this nation is firestorms, particularly in summer. The country is about 75% wilderness (not counting the ocean), with dangerous wild animals. It is rich in natural resources, particularly on the Colonial Shore.

Magic
Magic is common in Alftiaria and is frequently employed by law enforcement, the Council Hands. Most mages gain their magic through learned skill, though other forms of Wild Magic are not unheard of, including miracles from the Gods. In larger communities, magic items are quite common. Users of magic are almost universally looked upon with respect.

Politics
Alfitaria is ruled by the Council of Elevated Thought, a magical oligarchy which rules from the city of Gran Croix on the Elder Shore. The stability of the nation is fairly solid, with the Council represented in all major settlements by a Prefect. The major source of political power is popular support and Councillors are re-elected on a decadal cycle. With the emergence of new racial groups in the Colonial World, Foreign Relations are a chief concern. The people of Alftiaria enjoy good personal freedoms (somewhat less so in the Colonies), but scandals are common among the upper class and relations with other states are somewhat shaky. The Council is represented by the image of a lit hearth and a pair of eyes, in a very elaborate style, representing their supposed omniscience. The national motto is Mystery and Skill.

Culture
Intelligence is the main virtue of the Alftiarians, and is highly valued among them. Satire is a popular form of entertainment, which is somewhat unusual in a nation known for a strong (almost nationalist) sense of self. Veterinarians earn great respect, especially in the colonies, where enchanted replacements for animal labour are significantly less common. Alftiaria is a somewhat chauvinistic society with a strong male-dominated gender divide, though women still enjoy many freedoms. Married women seldom work as anything other than home-makers. Certain religious rituals, especially those to foreign Gods, are considered taboo. While the Council of High Thought is seen with general respect, most of the political structure beneath them is visibly corrupted, with bribes and kickbacks being routine and openly exchanged.

Religion
Alfiarian religion is Polytheistic, but is largely dominated by the God of Magic, Boccob, and all of the deities recognized by the state (and not forbidden by it) are, in one way or another, connected to magic. A significant portion of the community recognizes and worships Vecna despite strong opposition from the state. Other forbidden gods include Wee Jas and Korn. Alftiarian worship of Boccob consists of somber prayer and meditation, and publically occurs almost exclusively on holy days, which are quite frequent.

Economy
The Alfitarian economy is weak, and set to get weaker. While the major cities (Volar and Gran Croix) are enjoying relative prosperity, the majority of the country is in the midst of a recession. International trade is uncommon, but does occur, and the major export of the nation is labourers, with its major import being strange ores from the Jerjaw Mountains.

Military
The military of Alftiaria is a mighty force, and that is a major part of the reason why the Alftiarian Nation rules the known world (though obviously there are fringe nations at the edges of Alftiarian Knowledge). Legions of draftees are supplemented by cadres of powerful war mages. Heroism is richly rewarded with rank and prestige. This force is further supplemented by an almost unstoppable legion of Griffon riders, the Auric Knights. Highly trained, and set aside for the task from a young age, the Auric Knights show an unusually martial dedication for this otherwise magically-oriented nation. Auric Knights typically worship Heironius, Hexor, or Kord, but are fairly mute about it. They are raised alongside their Griffon mounts and form close bonds.

Demographics
The people of Alfitaria are predominantly human, though the colonies are nearly integrated in terms of race. Only one in ten lives within an urbanized area. There are 1.23 men for every 1 woman, and 2.3 children in the average family. The average life expectancy for most citizens is 33.4 years, though many in the urbanized areas or the middle and upper classes live far longer.

Prestige Classes
The following prestige classes are endemic to Alftiarian Culture: Auric Knight (customized) Eldrich Knight (DMG) Divine Theurge (DMG) Thaumaturgist (DMG) Archmage (DMG) Hand of the Council (Customized) All-Seer (DMG)
