QUESTION MODULE 9 :Assignment 9.1 page 21-22 WORLD MISSIONS. CROSS - CULTURAL CONSIDE RATIONS Expository Preaching. Explain the relevance of culture for (a) values, (b)beliefs, and(c) world view. 1. INTRODUCTION The meaning of the word "cultural " to cultural" : according to The Modern Uni versity Dictionary by Alexander H. Irvine (London) : a. mental training and development; of refinement; b. civilization; c. the stage of development of a country at a particular time; or d. educated and refined. The noun word means plainly "a way of life". This can also explain the customs and beliefs and growing systems of a certain g roup of people. Seeing and experienced their values, beliefs, their art, way o f living day to day, the development of the children, what their needs are and a lso their social activity in personal life and as a group of organization of a p articular country or principle grouping. Traditions: of men and the past play a big role and can be a strong bondage or b enefit. Technology: with or without even knowledge of it or in circumstances no knowledg e can be a great influence in the growing forward or backwards. Beliefs system: this can have a very huge influence in the whole society, family wise, children, up growing, and in every circumstance a bad or positive display . Attitudes: Above mentioned can be seen in people's attitudes toward thinking, a nd this again will definitely explain their belief system if there is no "going forward positively" or on a Godly manner this will be shown in people, society, elders, and children's attitudes. Culture is a way of thinking or developing of a group to stored up for the futur e, people vary differently in a mono-cultural setting. 2. THE ORIGEN OF CULTURE MANDATE. The cultural mandate was given to man by YHVH and entrusted home to rule over th e environment (Gen 1:26-30) God provided and had fellowship with His created man and women what a wonderful experienced must that has been, walking and talking to a living, seeing, feeling , trusting, true, honest, amazing, YHVH. What a relationship and privilege d id Adam and Eve gave away for being deceived by the fruit of knowledge. This f irst culture moved back like MOVED BACKWARDS .....

B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I. 2. SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE IN ANTHROPOLOGY. Taken from The Ages Digital Library Theology by Derickson's Notes On The Theolo gy (A study book in Theology by Stanley L. Derickson AGES software. "There is scientific evidence that the human soul has weight. In 1907 dr. Duncan MacDougall placed dying patients on a very sensitive scale just before they die d. At the point of death there was an immediate weight loss of from 3/8 to 1 1/ 2 ounces. He did this experiment on six people of the six bodies there were fo ur that showed this weight loss. He also tried the experiment on fifteen dogs, and not one of them changed weight at the point of death." "So there. We do have souls and they vary in weight. I wonder if that indicates that a weight problem in this life is transferred into the next life." "We can't use such a short experiment to definitely prove that the human being h as a soul, however if you believe that the Bible is God's Word to man, you can k now that there is a soul within man. Indeed, may of the religions of the world view man's makeup as containing a soul and/or spirit." Page 703. * As we enter into a study of anthropology, we are going to be studying man. Th is section is somewhat unique, in that it is the only subject of theology which laps over into the secular world of study. * Anthropology is a secular subject as well Unsaved people are interested in th e study of anthropology as well as the Believers. The secular view of man will b e different to some extent because their basis will be the theory of may be evo lution, while the believers in YHVH basis for study is the Bible. * Secular anthropology will view man as descending from a long evolutionary cyc le, while YHVH anthropology's view of man come from the creator of that man, YHV H (GOD). * Within the secular scheme of study there are many divisions of study. I would like to show a chart which shows some of these divisions and their relation to the overall system of study. * The Alex Halley book and movie, called " Roots." We are all interested in our roots. We desire to know about our fathers, our grandfathers, our great grandfa thers etc. * We are about to really study our roots. We are going to look into the origin of man, as approaching the doc trine of "sin" - that is another terrible story. * In short Anthropology is the study of man, or the science of man. We will get into a more detailed definition, there are two sources or approaches to the stu dy of man.

And their relation To the overall system o of study.

MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/050 3 W.I.T.M.I. 4. WAYS TO STUDY ANTHROPOLOGY; 2 WAYS: One way to study is from the approach of human philosophy as most of the world a pproaches the subject, or we can look at what the Word of God tells us about man , and draw conclusions from that source. From the Believers perspective it is most logical to look at both and hold to w hat the Lord has given to us in the Word. (A) VALUE SIDE. 1. There are benefits to look at the following, the Scriptural approach is base d on the Word of God (YHVH) and is the thinking of Almighty God ELOHIM 2. This gives the approach of value all of the validity it needs for the Christ ian. It deals with all areas of man, both material and immaterial. It covers m oral, spiritual and eternal areas. 3. What is said in these areas is, by nature, truth because it is revelation fr om God. (yhvh) The choices of the people that are observed are apparently dictat ed by similar choices that people in the society have made. 4. These choices reflect the layer: the issue of cultural values. It always co ncern choices about what is "good" what is "beneficial" or what is "best". 5. Values are pre-set decisions that a culture makes between choices usually fa ced. 6. We know that materialism has a strong hold on the church, and also people ou tside. Even in small communities their will always the poor looking of hate the rich. 7. Behaviors will reflect values e.g. by looking at the greeting gesture of an American and a Mexican. In America two men grasp each other's hand and shake it and in Mexico they embrace each other. 8. Observing behavior patterns would spare much embarrassment because if misint erpretation the greeting gesture of Siriano men of South America who spit on ea ch other's chests in greeting. 9. Terms to think of and take note in study values in Anthropology is "Exta-Bib lical Anthropology" based on man's ideas and concepts about what we are and what we can do. 10. "Intra-Biblical Anthropology" This is the study of man based on what God ha s revealed about man in His word. 11. It should be recognized that the bible does not approach man as a textbook. You do not find a I and II man in the table of contents of the Bible. The bib le does not layout a systematic set of information. We need to go into the Word and glean what it says about man and values as far as God present it. 12. There is no systematic anthropology found in the scripture. 13. If ones cultural value system is high and based on true honest manner they will certainly reap a wonderful fruit in the generation to come. 14. Cultural values can influence people in a lot of their comings and doings. MARIA REYNEKE CALVARY B-DEGREE 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I. * Respect : Demonstrating civility is a helpful attribute when treating other r eligions. Consideration for others, fair exposition of their views, an "externa l and internal politeness contribute to understanding. Agreement is not the iss ue, rather, we can agree to disagree. * Honest : to be honest, open and let a shining light shine through you to be so that other can see through you. * Unafraid : to have faith believe in the one and only true God, to trust in Him with your whole heart for keeping you strong and on the right road. To not be afraid for what comes your way. * Understanding: When we focus on understanding of cultures and people to unders tand each other we have to have compassion and know that not everyone knows the truth, it is only the truth that can set you free. Try to always understand out of the perspective that person values was set in the past or in His/her mind. * Be patient : this value shows endurance, shows what is in us and the honesty o f our purpose and values. * Carefulness' : BELIEVERS should be careful not to compromise their own princip les to fit into another culture. * Humility: Observable reverence for others promotes respect and genuine friend liness. It's one thing to believe that God's YHVH revelation is the only sure an d certain guide for our journey; it's another thing to act as if we ourselves po ssessed a sure and certain grasp of all the complexities of revealed truth. * Care and compassion : We can treat others as people just as people, just as we are, with virtues and follies, insights and limitations that give meaning to th e human condition. To demonstrate compassion and care involves seeing people in their humanity as sinners. Courtesy can be demonstrate not because we know othe

rs but simply because we see others as human beings like ourselves. * Commitment: in order of priority in relationship is you relationship to your mate, and commitment according to YHVH'S Word. Commitment in the society and to wards other people is also a important value, throughout being commitment in tim e, serving, love, kindness, and all things you want to commit yourself in doing, also prayer and loving towards the Holy Father and YAHUSHUA and the SET APART S PIRIT * Boundaries: In setting the good boundaries shows also the value to know what and whereto you will let others use you or they to be used. Boundaries is a per fect manner to keep you in the position to be valued throughout your lifetime an d get the time for good values. MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE 327 06/0503 W.I.T.M.I. (value continues) * Covenant making: this extreme value will show what you really are, keeping and obeying these difficult value especially in the time we live in will asked for a lot of pressure and commitment from your side as well those who you make coven ant with. Isn't it amazing how very quickly the evil can take your eyes and min dset of this very important and eternal value. (B) BELIEFS SYSTEMS. Let's have a look at a deeper level of understanding, cultural beliefs: We can asked the question What is true? Interestingly the different people within the group, might profess totally diffe rent beliefs and value even the word different from group to group or the under standing of the right meaning cultural wise. We might also find that the values and behaviors are oppose to the beliefs, which supposedly produce them. This i s a great problem in society and culture beliefs over the world, the problem ari ses from the confusion within the culture group and their beliefs theoretical an d cultural and traditional. It is very essential to have a look at sociology to examined it to know where pe ople get their belief system from. 1. WE ARE A SOCIAL PEOPLE. We will have a look at sociology as it relates to belief systems and the world ( missionary). * Sociology, as any field of study is by its very nature limited to one extent, or another. To look at the system of belief we know the limits are the study of God, and the things relating to God.(YHVH) * We can break it down into ten different areas and go to work in that study. W ithin theology we have the section we are working on now, Anthropology, or the study of man. * Sociology is at best, at he outer limits of the study of anthropology, however anthropology and sociology and the influence in belief are loosely related. 2. DEFINITION: SOCIOLOGY. "The science of society, social institutions, and social relationships; specif: the systematic study of the development beliefs , structure, interaction, and c ollective behavior of organized groups of human beings". " the scientific analys is of a social institution as a functioning whole and as it relates to the est o f society.." (From Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary 1991) MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVERY 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I. 3. EXAMPLE : USA (taken from page 719 "The Ages Digital Library Theology Derickson's Notes On Theology ages software

) Small portion of the History in illustrate the study of society and beliefs in general and how it develops, organizes and interacts. "The USA has always been called the melting pot of the world. We have, from the beginning, brought in anyone that wanted to come, and we melted everyone togeth er into one great society. As the emigrants came to this country they found work and places to live. The f act that these peoples from many lands congregated into small pockets not only i n our cities, but in our land is of interest. In New York city there are black sections, Irish sections, Chinese sections, Latin sections, white sections, etc . Within our country are communities that were started by a particular ethnic g roup." "We lived in a small town in Nebraska for a while that was founded by Swedes and their business community as so tightly controlled that outsiders could not come in and start a business. One man tried to start a television repair business. Work was very slow for him, yet other shops were running two wand three months behind on their service calls. The newcomer made a deal with one of the establi shed businesses to make their service calls for them and then carry the shop job s to their shop. The men were exited about the possibility and called some of their customers. The customers would not allow the newcomer to touch their sets . He closed up his business within a few months." "This phenomena of division and beliefs in only what they think what is right wi thin the collective is not hard to understand, and indeed is probably normal. We like to be with people like us, don't we? " "Indeed, as believers we tend to do this. Moody Monthly mentioned several years ago that they had a pole that showed that within two years of salvation over 90 % of new believers had no non-Christian friends. We gather together within our own little circles, because we enjoy one another and have things in common and w hat they believe and I belief is the same thing." "We divide the world into first world, second world, third world and I think we have other newer divisions as well. All of these are terms and concepts attempt ing to explain, study and understand the social and belief order in which we liv e as a world community" "One might wonder what the difference is between Anthropology and sociology. In the first place anthropology deals with man as he came to the earth. We as beli evers deal with man as we see him revealed in the Word of God, while the lost of ten deal with man as he is supposedly revealed in the evolution or fossils manne r." MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I (C) WORLD VIEW. 4. LOOKING AT SOCIETY VIEW AND SUBDIVISIONS. "We tend to reject all that anyone says even if we disagree only with a part of their thought. How many of you support Greenpeace the environmental group? Very few, but they are trying to do something that all of society should be involved in. We reject their message quite often because they act illegally at times, a nd most of them look like leftovers from the 60's hippie generation. In light of the YHVH'S command we nee to view society and all of its subdivision s. World Society : We are responsible to assist nations that are in need of help.

If we neglect that, we neglect the teaching of the YHVH in the concept of compa ssion and love for our neighbor. We as an individual can do little, yet we can do what we can, and that is the responsibility. Free World Society: We have a responsibility so see to it that the freedoms tha t we enjoy continue for ourselves, but also for everyone to which we can extend those freedoms. We should also be a part of seeing to it that others do not loo se those freedoms. If the different countries do not remain free, there normally is no TRUE Gospel witness. The early BELIEVERS was able to spread so easily to the known world d ue to the fact that there was freedom of movement and communication of the belie vers. They could go anywhere they wanted with their message. South African Society: We are responsible to the federal government for obedie nce, support and participation. We as believers have not been active enough in government in the past years. We have assumed that separation of BELIEVERS and state meant no participation in government by believers. That is wrong. Believ ers are to be a part of their government in more than voting and paying taxes. We are to be light and salt in whatever walk of life we enter into. If you beco me a government official, then be a BELIEVER IN YAWEH official and be light and salt in your position. Regional Society: There may not be much to do in this section other than partic ipate in any way that you can. There is sometimes little for me as a believer t o do other that to be supportive of those that were hurting due to the layoff et c. or in praying and for the church to be sensitive to the needs around. MARIA REYNEKE. B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I. (World view continues) State and Society: Again we deal with the government and the part that the belie ver ought to be playing in it. County Society: You might have county government as well as the helping of peop le in need. You need to be sensitive to the lost people of that area, an area t hat you personally could easily evangelize yourself. City Society: There may be city government, PTA etc. that you can get involved in. You certainly have the evangelistic responsibility. You may have business or employee relationships that need to be understood. Neighborhood Society: You should be involved in peoples lives that are this nea r to you. Helping them, witnessing to them, being friends to them and all these are answered in being friends. Church Society: Realize that there is church government and you are responsible before God for how you respond to it. You have your gifts that you should be u sing within the local church. You should receive the encouragement and strength that you need from this community. You also should be sharing in these areas, as well as the financial area to edify the body of believers, of which you are a part. So often when we talk to people that have left a ASSEMBLY, their reasons are tha t they are getting nothing from the ASSEMBLY. The real question is what have th ey been doing, DID THEY OBEY THE COMMANDS OF YHVH.. If they are totally involve d WITH FATHER YAH and with their purpose their, and working with their gifts the ir own needs quite often are met via their involvement. Family Society : REYNEKE FAMILY : AIRPORT If you look at the bible for ideas in society you will find that it presents the family as the basic unit from which all of the other societies develop. Struct

ure is very important for the proper functioning of the family. There is the ca ring for, the support of, the encouragement of, and all those things that are a part of the family society. If the Jews had done their job properly, and if the BELIEVERS obeying YHVH's commandmends , then the world would be much more toward the society that YHVH envisioned, a society of Godly people. That was what God had in mind when He gave Adam and Eve the command to go out and be fruitful. It is man's self-centeredness that has brought the world to where it is today. We all are doing our own thing, rather than the Lord's thing, and many people are dieing in their lost state because of our failure. MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/05 03 W.I.T.M.I. 5. THE EXCUSED OF FAILURE TO EVANGELISE THE WORLD. Lets looked at the enemies of spreading the Gospel. * The structure of Ha Satan the fallen angel and his demonic powers. * Tradition of men and followers of that tradition from generations. * Nationalism: This is found in almost every country. The resist of missionari es from other nationalities and are determined to drive foreigners out. * False religions: This enemy is one of the oldest. Especially Judaism, Mohamm edanism, Satanism, Roman Catholicism, etc. Neither proclaims freedom. No mercy is shown to Believers in Yaweh and the Torah.. * Communism: Even though this demon-inspired, atheistic movement was slaughtere d in Russia, it is a very subtle enemy in all countries and is still much alive. Its Iron curtain cuts off relationships outside its borders and conceals Terro r within. * Evolution : this horrible teaching of millions and billions of years and ever ything together with it, started already in preschool and in films on TV for un der the age of 5years. Despite of these enemies, the true Gospel must be spread by order from YHVH' AND THE TORAH THE WHOLE SCRIPTURES. World view : as the core of every culture explains the confusion many experience at the level of beliefs. One's own world view provides a system of beliefs whi ch are reflected in his actual values and behavior. Values and behavior reflec t the old belief system. People who share the gospel cross culturally have to c onsider the problem of world view. * Be aware of culture shock existence, this concept defines the confused feeling s and anxiety one experiences when confronted with a large number on few and un familiar people or situations. * Be will prepared spiritually, know your enemy, know what God's purpose is for you and what you have to do in those circumstances. * Pray constantly, for wisdom, for power from the SET APART, pray for open doors and people to pray for and together with you. Yield yourself at the TRUTH OF Y AHASHUA and be humble in all circumstances. * Remain in the SCRIPTURES OF YHVH, read, memorize, and stand firmly on the prom ises of YHVH through His living Word, don't be afraid YHVH will never leave you nor forsake you. * Deal with every problem, don't hide behind excuses deal with the reality and b e open for YHVH to impart in you what is necessary. Thank Him. * Remember you are human, we can all be faulty and making mistakes learn us to g row and trust YHVH for the following step, take it step by step, also remember t hat you have got a earthly body, that also has some needs of good rest, proper f ood, exercise, relaxation, companionship etc. MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/0503 W. I.T.M.I.

6. HINTS LEARNING ABOUT DIFFERENT LIFESTYLES IN CULTURES: * Analyze : When hit with the letdown stage, look for logical reasons - describ e, interpret, and evaluate what is happing in the society and in the community a round you. * Gather information: When you moved or leaving for a new location, duty statio n, or even immigrating overseas pos/base, learn as much about that new setting a s possible. Find out what happened in their history. What did the ancestors be lief in and what the people still does. Look for myths, stories and manner of w orship.( even in idol or people or ancestral) * Resist Negativity: When temptation comes through negative words of deeds, com ments or through media, newspapers, the assembly itself and my be even Believers , or your own family. Stand on faith, YHVH's promises, and resist the enemy, be firm and remain positive. * Bonding part from your side: Allow yourself to be guided around. If you meet and reach out and give of yourself to other, their will be out of itself a bond ing started to establish, a sense of belonging between participants. * Confidence in demonstration: if love and mercy and positive thinking is part of your life you will have a lot of confidence in what YHVH can and is willing t o do through you. Realize that to have confidence demonstrate faith and hope. Focus on the long-term, and on positive outcome. Emotional reaction is sometime s (most of the time) what you experienced in the present circumstances, and not something to rely on or to build on, emotions is there to sometimes help you to cope with circumstances, and a relief button, (tears for stress, or hurt, or mi ssing people's that is far.) * YHVH (GOD) blesses His owns plans: God underwrites His won schemes. He will s upply but we must know what His supplies are for. All we need to know is what H e plans to do. Find out what Yaweh is engaged in, and throw your lot in with Him . Join , salvation is not just an evangelist's pet subject, it is the Yaweh's principle work. Yaweh specializes in salvation through us turning towards Him o beying His will. * The uncursable winner: Fears are illusions - fears are mere phantoms. They only will take on substance if we accept them. Do you know, with absolute assu rance, that you have joined the winning side? Then you will not be harassed by fear. There is no way a believer can be crushed. He is uncursable. He has the winner, God Himself on his side. * No Hand - Me - downs: YHVH always operates with originals. His mandate is di rect, and not by tradition. We are not copies from copies, but originals from t he Original, YAHASHUA. "How shall they preach unless they are sent?" (Romans 10 :15) Everything comes from the Master Himself - not in a general way, but in and individual way. * Package deal: separate the commission from the enabling, and you then have ei ther power without purpose or purpose without power. MARIA REYNEKE B-DEGREE CALVARY 32706/0503 W. I.T.M.I. 5. APPLICATION: The soul of man consists of the intellect, man's knowing; sensibility, man's fee ling will, man's choosing; conscience, man's judging. These make up life for m an. In dross cultural considerations consideration and word Missions, the value s, beliefs and world view this is critical to remember. We read in James 1:14-15 "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of hi s own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." Lets look at the following: Intellect: soul knowing - temptation Sensibility: soul feeling - lust

Will : soul making a choice - sin Conscience: soul judging. Note: That the way to holiness is the same as to sin. The difference hinges on your decision of the will. It is just as easy to be holy as it is to sin. Psalm 62:5-8 "My soul, wait thou only upon YAWEH; for my expectation is from hi m. He only is my rock and my salvation he is my defense ; I shall not be moved. In YHVH is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength ,and my refuge is in YHVH. Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before Hi m: YHVH is a refuge for us. Se-lah." 6. CONCLUSION. The most important thing is to understand culture and its need to be consistent with the gospel. It is imperative that we see the relationship between the gospe l and culture today, ant that we shed those aspects of our culture which are inc ompatible with the gospel or which hinder the proclamation and practice of the T RUE Gospel culture wise. 7.
