Auckland is NZs largest city with approximately a third of the population living in this multicultural, lively and welcoming city. In fact, were so encompassing, we are now called a Super City! According to Mercer rankings, Auckland is ranked 4th equal as the worlds best quality of living destination. Check out some of the regular events that happen during the year such as: Pasifika Festival Held every March, this is a colourful showcase of food, art, tattoo design, music and tapestry drawn from all around the Pacific including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Vanuatu, PNG and the Cook Islands, just to name a few.
Music in the Parks From January to April every year there is a series of over 40 free music concerts in parks around the city, showcasing rising stars, much-loved jazz veterans, pop icons, hip hop superstars and always a few surprises! Diwali Festival of Lights Held every October in different areas of Auckland, this is an amazing chance to experience Indian culture in our own backyard. Events include dancing, food and the lighting of the oil lamps (diyas) and candles. International Film Festival Auckland has many film festivals throughout the year, featuring French films, Italian films, Spanish films, not to mention the huge International Film Festival each July. The Lantern Festival As one of Aucklands most popular summer events, the Auckland Lantern Festival brings Chinese New Year celebrations to a glowing finale with hundreds of beautiful lanterns, great food, fortune telling and performances. Waiheke Jazz Festival World-renowned jazz musicians play in a weekend-long festival celebrating jazz in all its forms.

From your study to employment opportunities

Regardless of your work or study experience, Unitec offers flexible pathways towards your chosen career. At Unitec, you can build the study programme that suits you. You could start your studies at the appropriate level and pathway as you need too. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have good connections with their industry or profession. Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, which gives you a competitive advantage when you start to apply for jobs. Undertaking work experience as part of your study gives you the opportunity to prove yourself and can open the doors to your very first job.
Variation to Work Visa

If you are eligible to work 20 hours per week while you are studying, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays (December to February). Part-time jobs
There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland throughout the year from working in the hospitality industry, to office work and shop assistants for example. Some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a day.

Graduate Job Search Visa (GJS)

Once you have completed your studies and if you are eligible, you can apply for the GJS visa. This allows you to stay in NZ for up to one more year to seek employment in the area that you have studied.

Many of our graduates find employment in Auckland or other parts of New Zealand because employers are always looking for the combination of theory and practical skills our students gain at Unitec. Others choose to settle in other countries, as the qualification you gain will be internationally recognised and the practical experience you will bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.

Inland Revenue Department

You must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. You can visit the IRD at their website www.ird.govt.nz

Learn about Mori culture

You will have the opportunity to experience the Marae (Mori meeting house) on campus. Unitec also offers a number of elective courses that cover te reo Mori (Mori language), the protocols of marae, Mori philosophy and cosmology, and arts such as tmoko (tattooing) and raranga (weaving). Sport and fitness

The Sports Centre offers excellent training facilities for all ages and fitness levels. You can play squash at the National Squash Centre, choose a yoga or pilates fitness class or use the weight room and cardio area. Concession and discount cards are available to students.

The Learning Centre offers free workshops, small group and one-on-one meetings with our specialist support staff to give you course-specific support, as well as help with general study skills.

This centre has a wide range of language resources available, from course books and magazines through to DVDs and CD-Roms.

Your accommodation on or off campus

On campus
If you want the buzz and security of living on campus, Unitec has a range of accommodation available. The options range from a studio to five-bedroom apartments which are all self-catered. Each apartment (apart from the studio) has a separate bedroom, lounge, bathroom (or two) and a well-equipped kitchen. Your furnished bedroom has a comfortable bed, some storage, space to study and a connection for a phone and computer (please note that if you require a fast broadband connection, then that is your responsibility). There is parking available and also an on-site laundry. You can choose to stay for a semester or a year. Unitec Residential Village Great North Road This apartment complex contains 34 separate self-contained, fully-furnished apartments. The indicative rent is based on 1 person/per bedroom/per week: 5 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment rent per bedroom: up to NZD 166 per week Unitec Residential Village - adjacent to campus This 134-bed apartment complex offers a mix of living options (listed below). Meet and greet

Unitec offers a friendly pick-up service from Auckland airport (homestay students excluded) for a fee of NZD 65. If you want to be met at the airport on arrival, please fill in the form at least five days before you arrive in Auckland. You can find the form online www.international.unitec.ac.nz > pre-departure.
Off campus stay with a homestay family

Living in homestay is a great way to practise your English language skills and experience Kiwi life. All homestay students have their own room and are provided with two meals a day during the week and three meals a day in the weekends. The cost is NZD 250 per week, plus a placement fee of NZD 220 and an airport pick-up fee of NZD 80. UNITEC PROGRAMME INDEx
Unitec offers a wide range of programmes, from certificates to doctoral degrees. A doctorate is the highest level of study in New Zealand (level 10), while a certificate is at level 4. If youre studying for a bachelors degree you would normally take courses at levels 5 to 7.

I first heard about Unitec when I was back in Fiji. I choseto study here because Unitec is internationally recognised as not just a theoretical but a practical learning institution. Your learning classroom
The theory, your knowledge

Regardless of the programme you choose, your theoretical knowledge is an intrical part of your learning process. You will attend lectures, tutorials, workshops and also be interative in the classroom.
Your programme, your experience

Accounting and finance, and management and marketing students take part in Industry Based Learning, a work placement in an actual business organisation. Bachelor of Computing Systems students undertake a semester-long work project for an organisation of their choice. Bachelor of Construction students are encouraged to work in the construction industry in the last two years of their degree. Boatbuilding students create a variety of project boats. In 2011, one of them, Karma Police, successfully held its own against much larger boats in the Round the North Island Race. Design and visual arts students can display their work at the on-campus galleries and at the end-of-year Grad Show great exposure which often leads to commercial offers for their work.
Early childhood education students work in an early childhood education centre throughout their studies. Landscape students work on designs for real sites with real clients, contributing to the development of public and private spaces. Natural science students develop their skills through placements at the Department of Conservation, MAF Biosecurity, the SPCA or the Auckland Zoo. Performing and screen arts students perform in front of a live audience at our on-campus theatre and work together to create numerous short films throughout the year. Sport students take part in work placements in a variety of sport and fitness orgnisations. They also develop their skills in the Human Performance Lab, a sports science lab also used by upcoming athletes. Veterinary nursing students work on real cases at the Unitec Veterinary Clinic and the country's first dedicated Veterinary Specialist Group Hospital, located on our Mt Albert campus.
Your practice
Practical knowledge goes hand-in-hand with theorectical knowledge so that's why you do both here. Industry-based learning is part of the curriculum across the Unitec programmes, which allows you to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom. This means when you step out into the workforce or further study, you have a suite of knowledge and a can do advantage.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)
The SOP is a summary of your future plans, career goals/desires, interests for study etc. The purpose of an SOP is to help us check what you want to learn and whether the programme provides this, whether the programme will prepare you for the type of career youre looking for, and which elective courses would be most suitable so that you take the topics of interest to you. Therefore an SOP should: > Be 1-2 pages (short and detailed is better than long and vague) > Introduce you and why you want to apply for the programme > Tell us about your specific interests in the field youve chosen > Give us some idea of your career goals and plans for the future > Tell us what you want to learn or hope to get out of the programme to prepare you for those plans. An SOP should NOT: > Include a copy of the CV/work or study history in detail > Rely on vague, obvious plans such as I want to improve my skills in computing > Be a copy or summary of promotional material from Unitec about our services/facilities/ courses or about NZ as a study destination.
Programme-specific information
Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science and Master of Health Science (generic) Applicants must have: > An equivalent degree in the same or similar field (radiology, nursing) or > Another professional qualification with evidence of clinical experience and recommendations from employers. Students cannot register or practise in NZ after completion. There are no clinical courses involved and no access to hospitals it is academic study only. graduate Diploma of Business and graduate Diploma in Computing Students can apply directly for these programmes after completing a bachelors degree and no work experience is required. Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Master of Business Students must have relevant middle management or supervisory work experience. Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Master of Education Does not lead to registration as a teacher.

Refund policy for international students

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU SIGN THE APPLICATION FORM
general provisions a. By accepting a place in a programme at Unitec, a student enters a contract with Unitec for the period that tuition fees have been paid. b. All students may pay the tuition fee for one year in two instalments except that students in the following categories must pay the full-year tuition fee in one instalment prior to commencement of study: c. For full-year non-semesterised programmes, or in cases where Immigration NZ (INZ) regulations require payment of one years tuition fee in order to be granted a visa. In these circumstances there is no refund of tuition fees. d. There will be no refunds for Summer School. e. Students who wish to defer to the following semester must notify International no less than two weeks prior to the programme commencement. f. There is no automatic right to a refund of fees if a student changes his/her mind about studying at Unitec. g. If an international student is on a Unitec student visa and fails to enrol there will be no refund for the period the visa was granted. h. No refunds will be given after programme commencement. For Certificate in Intensive English students programme commencement means the initial start date of the programme (as stated in the original Offer of Place letter). If a student wishes to extend this programme, there will be no refund granted once payment is made. i. All applications for refunds must be on the Application for Refund form (obtainable from Unitec International) and submitted to the International Office. j. Certificate in Intensive English students must submit the Application for Refund form to the Department of Language Studies. Applications for refunds will be considered under the following categories a. INZ has refused to grant an initial student visa for study in New Zealand b. INZ has refused to extend a student visa c. Unitec is unable to proceed with the programme or classes offered. Other refunds a. An international student in semesterised programmes who gains Permanent Residency will not receive a refund of fees for the semester in which residency is granted. However they will be treated as a New Zealand Permanent Resident for the following semester and refunded any international fees paid beyond the semester in which residency was granted. b. A Certificate in Intensive English student who gains Permanent Residency during the initial enrolment period (as stated in the Offer of Place letter) will not receive a refund of fees. c. International students in programmes designed with full-year non-semesterised courses (offered as two classes Semester A and Semester B) must pay the international fees for the full year, and there will be no refund of tuition fees for that year even if Permanent Residency is granted during that year. d. If a student wishes to withdraw from their programme and an International Application for Refund is received by International no less than two weeks prior to the semester start date, a refund of 80% of tuition fees will be given. There will be no refund for International Applications for Refund received after this time. All refunds will be paid into the student's account in their home country on sighting evidence that the student concerned has returned to their home country, or to the student in NZ on sighting a changed visa (eg Visitors Visa or Work Permit). In all instances, INZ will be notified. e. If a student wishes to transfer to another institution and has INZ approval and the International Application for Refund is received by International no less than two weeks prior to the semester start date, 70% of the tuition fees will be refunded. There will be no refund for International Applications for refunds received after this time. The refund will either be sent directly to the institution, or on sighting a student visa for the other institution, the refund can be given to the student in New Zealand. f. The Director of International may approve refunds on a compassionate basis in exceptional circumstances (such as serious illness etc). The amount of the refund will be at the discretion of the Director of International.

Guidelines for Credit recognition / Cross-credits

Please note:
The maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitecs courses. If you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to: Obtain detailed course descriptions (in English) from the previous institution you studied at Complete the Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits (online or in the International Prospectus) Please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take 2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). Credit applications received less than two months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance will not be assessed in time.
Note: If the previous qualification is from New Zealand Please take these items to any Student Central office on campus. (If you are in your final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. Unitec has an open application policy. Although most programmes have a preferential application date, we welcome applications at any time throughout the year. If the programme you are applying for has already commenced, or all the available places have been taken, we will provide you with the details and opportunity to apply for the next scheduled programme. We do encourage you to apply as early as possible.
