Revenues on Review

W
elcome to the 12th annual Healthcare Informatics 100. Here you will find the top 100 companies ranked by 2004 healthcare IT revenue. Collectively, these elite companies sold more than $24 billion in IT products and services, offering everything from highly specialized best-of-breed applications to comprehensive enterprisewide solutions to health plans, provider organizations and other business entities. All of this economic activity was played out in a U.S. regulatory environment that was, and is, confusing and challenging, yet ultimately encouraging to stakeholders. All figures used in creating the Healthcare Informatics 100 were self-reported. We rely on companies to provide accurate information. The data-gathering process began in midMarch when we asked the more than 1,800 companies in our database to complete our online survey. The always-changing composition of this annual list reflects a dynamic industry fueled by both the entrepreneurial drive of newcomers and the strategic acquisition plans of industry giants. Some companies may have a significantly different ranking than in previous years because of changes in how IT revenues were attributed or defined as a result of reorganization. And some large industry players are absent entirely. Most companies have well-defined limits on the level of financial granularity they can share, which kept some firms off our list. In the tables below are some slices of data that you may find interesting. On page 59, additional financial information on the 54 publicly traded companies in the Healthcare Informatics 100 has been assembled by our colleagues at Standard & Poors, a sister business unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies. And pages 61 through 78 contain profiles, forecasts, consolidation and other activities at some of the companies behind the numbers. The Editors
