HESWALLS Riverside Players are back on stage
this month with their production of Jason and the
Argonauts. Its on at Heswall Hall and should be
worth a visit.
In this months edition weve got news of Mia
Austin, who has written a book despite having a
condition which has rendered her totally paralysed.
Theres also an award for a couple from the Rotary
Club, a historic Heswall map, a wedding, whats on

This teaches them everything they will need
to know if they would like a career in the
professional world of dance.
Singing, dancing, acting! Fancy doing all
three? With the newly revised Theatre Craft
syllabus you can! For ages fve years onwards
at 1:30pm on Saturdays. In this class they
will learn the basics of singing and routines
from West and Broadway shows.
We also hold regular exam sessions and our
annual Christmas demonstrations. Dance
classes are at 3, uniform is not necessary for
their frst class. If you are interested please

Pedal power
Five Heswall police offcers organised and completed
a sponsored cycle ride from London to Paris. Through
local support and sponsorship they have raised 3,000
for the Montse Benitez Foundation. A cheque was
handed over to Mrs Benitez at Heswall Police Station
last month.
Shoplifters jailed
TWO prolifc shoplifters have been jailed as a result of
extra high visibility police patrols in Heswall town centre.

Abusive Heswall man fned
A 49-year-old man from Milner Road, Heswall, has been fned 250 and ordered to pay
100 compensation after pleading guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour in the
road.
Police divert youths
POLICE say they have cut anti-social behaviour in Ridgewood Park and Fishers Lane,
Pensby, by encouraging the young people towards diversionary activities
Extra village patrols
EXTRA police patrols have been carried out in Thornton Hough and Brimstage in a bid
to stop thefts from cars in the villages.
Shop thief jailed
A 42-year-old man from Moreton was jailed for 24 weeks after being convicted of
stealing from the Co-op on Pensby Road.
Valuable watches stolen
DETECTIvES are appealing for information following a burglary at an address in
Pinewood Drive, Heswall, in November.
Among the items stolen were a number
of watches, of sentimental value to
the owner. These include a Seiko
Chronograph Watch (Model 7032/7042),
a Suunto X6-HR and a Casio Mens
Digital Illuminator LCD Orange watch.

Falcon spreads its wings
HeSwall girl Mia austin, who
has locked-in Syndrome, has
incredibly just fnished writing
her story, together with several
poems, using only her eyes.
They have all been published into
a booklet Hot Potato which is now
on sale.
Mia had been a typical lively, fun-
loving 21-year-old, working at Co-op
Travelcare on Telegraph Road, but
with no warning whatsoever, on
16th November 2009, she suffered
a massive, devastating stroke. After
more than a year in hospital, Mia
was fnally able to return home to
be with her family, but only when
considerable alterations had been
made.
Though Mia can hear, see and
understand perfectly, she is totally
paralysed except for the use of her eyes. She was only able to write with the help
of an amazing, but expensive, new computer which picks up her eye movements
and which was bought thanks to local fundraising efforts. Previously, Mias family
had to painstakingly work through a printed alphabet chart for Mia to select each
letter of anything that she wanted to say.
Though the computer is an incredible lifeline, its by no means the end of the
story. Mia now desperately needs a special wheelchair which
can be operated by her totally independently, and also a
unique exercise machine to slowly encourage the use of her
limbs. These items are 23,000 and 7,000 respectively.

ROSES Tea Rooms, formerly based in Heswall, won
the prestigious Taste of Cheshire Award 2011.
The awards were held at the new West Cheshire
College late last year and were hosted by Marketing
Cheshire with special guest Diane Oxberry from
BBCs North West Tonight.
Roses Tea Rooms, a family run tea room opened
in 2005 in Heswall. Husband and wife team
Andreas Constantinou and Michelle Foulia wanted
to provide the quintessential English tea room with
a Mediterranean twist which refected their Greek
Cypriot heritage. Specialising in homemade food
and patisserie all made on site using locally sourced
ingredients their small friendly tea room was soon a
frm favourite with the locals and won many awards over the next four years.
In August 2010, they relocated to Ness Botanic Gardens at the invitation of its Director,
Kevin Reid.
Having won the Taste of Cheshire Award, Roses Tea Rooms will now go on to
represent Cheshire in the North West regional competition and if successful, the
National Awards in London.

JENNy and vernon Schwarz, members of the Rotary
Club of West Wirral, have been awarded Rotarys highest
accolade for their selfess charitable contributions both
here on the Wirral and overseas.

BACK in victorian times, Ordnance Survey mapped the entire Heswall area.
The survey took place in 1871 and in 1912 it was revised and issued as the Edition of
1912 Wirral Division, Wirral Union & R.D. XXXII.I. Cheshire sheet XXXII.I
Now, nearly one hundred years later, there is a chance to buy a 2012 Centenary
Edition of the Heswall Map. These are prints of the original 1912 map that has been
watercoloured by Alan Taylor, a renowned technical illustrator, who has previously
created works for the likes of Jaeger, Cartier, an so on.
The largest sized print available is at the original map scale and is of a similar size to
one of todays OS maps (118cm x 84cm / 46 x 33 inches). The original was restored
by hand, removing the various aging marks and stains it had collected over the past
hundred years, and then painted in watercolours. For more information please visit

Non Fiction: The Secret Life of Bletchley Park by Sinclair McKay
Bletchley Park was where one of the wars most famous and crucial achievements was made:
the cracking of Germanys Enigma code in which its most important military communications
were couched. This country house in the Buckinghamshire countryside was home to Britains most
brilliant mathematical brains, and the scene of immense advances in technology indeed, the birth
of modern computing. The military codes deciphered there were instrumental in turning both the
Battle of the Atlantic and the war in North Africa. What was life like during the war for the thousands
of men and women who lived and worked there an odd, secret territory between the civilian and
the military? Sinclair McKays book is the frst history for the general reader of life at Bletchley Park,
and an amazing compendium of memories from people now in their eighties of skating on the
frozen lake in the grounds (a depressed Angus Wilson, the novelist, once threw himself in) of a
youthful Roy Jenkins, useless at codebreaking, of the high jinks at nearby accommodation hostels
and of the implacable secrecy that meant girlfriend and boyfriend working in adjacent huts knew
