Submersible Electric Motor Driven Seawater Lift Pump Technical Description

Submersible Motor Technical Description
General Weir submersible motors are designed to operate completely submerged in the liquid to be pumped. The installation should be arranged to ensure a minimum of 0.5 ft/sec (0.15m/sec) flow over the motor in order to provide adequate cooling. Motors are designed to be close coupled (1MV3) to the pump and are suitable for continuous running duty (S.1) in accordance with BS4999. The motors are of the 'wet' squirrel cage induction type and are filled with a coolant. Suitable coolant mediums include distilled and potable water. Where it is considered advantageous a heat transfer agent containing a corrosion inhibitor can be utilised which will also reduce the risk of frost damage in situations where this could occur. Stator Assembly The stator windings consist of copper wires insulated with a tough heat resistant plastic material that has a high insulation resistance and is impervious to water. All connections between individual coils and tail cables are insulated and made watertight. The tail cables (power leads) pass through watertight gland in the end cover of the motor. Low-tension windings are normally designed such that the maximum operating temperature will not exceed 70C, and high-tension windings are designed for a maximum of 80C. In designing the windings, the environmental water temperature is taken into consideration to ensure that the maximum allowable temperature for the insulation type is not exceeded. The core laminations are manufactured from low loss, high permeability, silicon sheet steel and are individually coated with a high grade insulating varnish to prevent eddy current flow between the laminations. These laminations are compressed together between stainless steel endplates (corrosion protection) and solid end clamps and are housed in a closely fitting cylinder. An axial key prevents any rotational movement.

WEIR PUMPS LTD.

Liners are inserted into the slots in the core pack to prevent damage to the winding wire insulation during coil insertion. After winding, the bore of the stator pack is coated with a corrosion preventative paint.

Rotor Assembly The rotor shaft is manufactured to fine tolerances from magnetic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel sleeves are fitted at the journals in order that these can be replaced, if necessary, during overhaul. The major part of the core pack consists of laminations made from the same material as that used for the stator core. At each end of these laminations a section of stainless steel laminations is included to prevent electrolytic action between the silicon steel core and the copper short circuiting rings, and to counteract any corrosive action of the water at the extremities of the core pack. Slots in the core packing are produced to carefully selected dimensions to ensure an intimate, vibration free fit of the rotor winding bars. Rotor winding bars are un-insulated, medium hard, high conductivity copper and are driven into the core pack then brazed to the short circuiting rings at each end of the core. A tight fit between the bars and coreplates is necessary to prevent undue vibration. A corrosion preventative is applied to the outer diameter of the core and the complete rotating assembly is dynamically balanced.

Bearings All bearings are suitable for water lubrication. Guide bearings are housed in the motor end frames. The bushes are carbon impregnated PTFE material. The stainless steel journal sleeves on the rotor assembly are replaceable as previously mentioned. The hydraulic thrust from the pump as well as the weight of the motor and pump rotating elements is borne by a liberally rated thrust bearing. This bearing consists of stainless steel tilting pads mounted on a self-aligning bearing cage and a rotating disc of carbon impregnated PTFE. All components are replaceable and sets of pads do not have to be specially matched for thickness or positional placement. On pump start-up any up-thrust would be taken on a thrust washer in the pump delivery chamber.

WEIR PUMPS LTD.

External Carcass Various material options are available and the choice is dependent on the environmental conditions in which the machine is to operate. The external component materials of construction for this application are identified elsewhere in this tender. Sealing Our motors are fitted as standard, with a cartridge mechanical seal and a diaphragm arrangement to prevent the ingress of the pumped fluid during normal operation. The mechanical seal is mounted on the outer diameter of the rigid sleeve coupling, which is located at the shaft penetration in the motor drive end cover. The sleeve coupling is machined to fine tolerances and is an interference fit on the motor shaft to ensure that no movement can occur between the motor shaft and the coupling. This arrangement also ensures that the motor shaft end is contained in the internal motor coolant circuit, which contains a corrosion inhibitor. The diaphragm is fitted in the bottom motor end cover and is designed to take up expansion and contraction of the motor coolant as it heats and cools which prevents contamination by the pumped fluid. Repeated starting and stopping over a period of many years may result in contamination of the motor coolant by the pumped fluid. In seawater applications, if this is left unchecked, this could cause severe internal corrosion damage. For seawater applications we recommend the use of a coolant header tank in place of the diaphragm, which will ensure the motor always has a positive internal pressure, thus ensuring that no seawater can enter the motor, preventing internal corrosion damage. The header tank also acts as an on-line monitoring device and provides an indication of the condition of the motor mechanical seal. During normal operation, the tank level would remain constant with only a small amount of coolant lost through evaporation or through the seal itself. At the onset of seal failure, the coolant would be lost more rapidly and the tank level would drop. The tank can be fitted with a level switch, which would alert the operator to refill the tank or stop the machine to investigate the coolant loss. Whilst the submersible motor will operate satisfactorily without a header tank, we now recommend the fitting of header tanks to all submersible motors in seawater applications as they can provide a reduction in operating expenditure through the prevention of major corrosion damage and the elimination of unnecessary planned maintenance.

WEIR PUMPS LTD.

Power Cable The supply cable to the submersible electric motor will be of EPR/CSP/GSWB/CSP covered copper construction and will terminate inside the motor casing with cable glands used for sealing at the entry to the casing. The cable will be joined to the motor tails cable by a soldered and tape insulated joint in accordance with our detailed instruction sheets in our factory. Finish The external finish of the motors is dependent on the environmental conditions in which the machine is to operate and the choice of external component materials. If the external surface of the motor is to be painted it will be identified elsewhere in this tender. All motor casing joints are coated with sealant, and where necessary assembled motors are pressure tested. All motors are no load tested prior to performance testing with its associated pump. Pumpsets are works tested to ensure that the quoted duties are achieved, witnessed tests with customer's representative present can be arranged, if required, at extra cost. Prior to performance testing in our factory the motors are filled with a 2% solution of corrosion inhibitor, which coats the internal cooling circuit of the motor. After testing the cooling medium is completely drained leaving behind a residual coating over the whole of the internal surfaces. This coating is sufficient to provide adequate corrosion protection and no further treatment is necessary prior to the unit going into service. When installing and commissioning, the motor should be re-filled with potable water in accordance with the procedure in the operating and maintenance manual provided.

Pump Technical Description

Pump Arrangement The pump offered is of the vertically suspended, submersible motor driven, mixed flow bowl type as typically illustrated and as shown on the attached Typical Sectional Arrangement and General Arrangement Drawings. The pump itself will comprise a strainer suction cover, pump chamber and a rotating element incorporating a shaft mounted impeller.

Suction End The suction cover has a flared entry with a spigoted flange suitable for mounting the matched Weir Submersible motor. A perforated strainer of generous proportions screens liquid entering the pump. The liquid being pumped enters the suction cover which has vanes specially designed to provide the impeller with an optimum flow distribution with minimum head loss. The suction cover, which is flanged and spigoted to the first stage chamber, also incorporates a housing for the pump shaft lower cutless rubber bearing bush.

Chambers The stage chamber incorporates integral guide passages, designed to guide the liquid smoothly from the outlet of the impeller to the delivery chamber. A neck ring is securely fitted to the suction side of the stage. The pump chamber, suction end cover and delivery chamber all have spigoted/recessed mating faces, the connections being made with studs and nuts, with tab washers provided under the nuts for positive locking purposes. Joints are sealed using nitrile rubber 'O' rings. The delivery chamber also incorporates a housing for a bearing bush, which will guide the upper end of the pump shaft.

Rotating Element The rotating element housed in the pump chamber incorporates an assembly of impeller, secured to the shaft by a key. The rest of the shaft is protected by a sleeve and the axial movement of the sleeve and impeller is restrained by means of nuts at the delivery end of the shaft. The impeller is of the shrouded type with vanes hand finished to ensure a smooth passage for the liquid being pumped and are dynamically and statically balanced to permit silent and vibration free running of the rotating element.

WEIR PUMPS LTD.

Hydraulic balance is achieved by relief holes in the delivery shroud and suction and delivery neck flanges are incorporated. This arrangement minimises the thrust on the impellers, hence permitting the use of a smaller thrust bearing in the electric motor. Bearings The thrust bearing will be located in the submersible electric motor. A thrust washer in the delivery chamber limits the upward movement of the shaft when the pump starts under low head conditions. The pump bearings are of the cutless rubber lined type and are lubricated by the water being pumped.

Weir Submersible Electric Motor Design Features

Key Features Water filled motor. Keyed sleeve coupling between pump and motor. Coupling mechanically connected to the motor shaft by sealed capscrew. Cartridge mechanical seal. Seal fitted on the outside diameter of coupling for ease of maintenance. Cable connected inside motor and lead to the surface without external wetted joints. Cable exterior to the riser column. Optional motor header tank. Motor has positive internal pressure under all operating conditions when using the optional header tank. Material for warm seawater applications duplex stainless steel (Zeron 100' UNS number UNS S32760'). Optional transit erection cradle.

General Mechanical Features 1. The pumpsets are designed for an average of three years continuous operation between major overhauls. The actual time between overhauls is largely dependant on the application and mode of operation; some installations have been in operation for over five years without overhaul.

2.

Our motors are designed to run in either direction, therefore upon stopping the machine; the falling water column will not have any detrimental effect on the pump or motor. However, it is recommended that a short time delay be built into the motor control centre to prevent the motor being re-started whilst it is running in reverse. Because of the reverse rotation capability of our machine we do not recommend the fitting of a submerged non-return valve above the pump discharge bowl. In the event of stopping the unit, any suspended solids in the water column can settle on top of this valve that could prevent it re-opening on start-up. This would mean that the complete unit would have to be lifted simply to clean the valve. In addition to this, unless the valve has a small drain hole allowing the water column to drain down slowly, when lifting the pump for maintenance the entrained water column has to be lifted as well. This makes maintenance extremely difficult.

The Weir submerged electric motor driven pumpset can be supplied in any material suitable for the application. For raw seawater applications with an ambient seawater temperature in excess of 30oC we would recommend the use of super duplex stainless steel Zeron 100' (UNS S32760). When using a hypochlorite biocide marine growth inhibitor our recommended dosing rate is 1-2 ppm. Our pumps are supplied with an automatic air release / vacuum breaker valve situated on the top of the discharge bend. The valve used for most applications is of 50mm nominal bore. An isolating valve is supplied as standard to facilitate servicing of the air release valve whilst the main is under pressure. The isolating valve would be a lever operated wafer butterfly valve. Alternatively a vertical discharge can be provided with an air release valve supplied loose for mounting at a suitable location in the clients pipework.

The pump journal bearing material is fluted cutless rubber and is designed to operate submerged in the pumped fluid. The motor thrust and journal bearing material is carbon loaded PTFE which is lubricated by the motor coolant. The thrust bearing is designed to carry the thrust load from both the pump and the motor, and is generously sized to accommodate at least 2 x close valve thrust with worn clearances.

7.

For seawater applications, as an on-line monitoring device and to prevent internal corrosion damage, we recommend the use of a coolant header tank, which will ensure the motor, always has a positive internal pressure, thus ensuring that no seawater can enter the motor. The header tank also provides an indication of the condition of the motor mechanical seal. During normal operation, the tank level would remain constant with only a small amount of coolant lost through evaporation or through the seal itself. At the onset of seal failure, the coolant would be lost more rapidly and the tank level would drop. The tank is fitted with a level switch, which would alert the operator to refill the tank or stop the machine to investigate the coolant loss. The header tank is of the circulating type and is fitted with supply and return lines.

The header tank is manufactured in stainless steel and is supplied with reinforced flexible supply and return hoses with stainless steel connections. For ease of handling we recommend the use of a transit erection cradle when transporting, installing or maintaining the motor and it associated power cable. This integrated handling device allows the motor and power cable to be transported safely, preventing possible damage and facilitating installation and removal of the unit.

10. The main power cable(s) are clamped to the column pipe above and below the column pipe flanges. This is achieved by using duplex stainless steel bands with rubber cable protectors. The biocide dosing tube and the header tank supply and return tubes are clipped to the outside diameter of the column pipe flange. The cable bands and tube clips are included in our scope of supply.

11. The recommended start-up sequence, is to start the pump against an open motorised dump valve with a timer and pressure switch to close the valve after the column is primed and at normal operating pressure. By using a motorised dump valve with a timer and pressure switch, water hammer and pressure surges will be avoided.

General Electrical Features 12. Motors are available in low voltage and high voltage up to 6600 volts.

13. The motors are designed to handle 80% reduced voltage.

14. Stator windings consist of copper wires insulated with a tough heat resistant plastic material that has a high insulation resistance and is impervious to water. All connections between individual coils and tail cables are insulated and made watertight. The tail cable (power leads) passes through a watertight gland in the end cover of the motor. Low-tension windings are normally designed such that the maximum operating temperature will not exceed 70C; high-tension windings are designed for a maximum of 80C. In designing the windings, the environmental water temperature is taken into consideration to ensure that the maximum allowable temperature for the insulation type is not exceeded. Because of the nature of the heat resistant plastic winding insulation on water filled

submersible motors it is not possible to fit winding RTDs. As an alternative a thermocouple can be fitted in a thermowell located in the internal motor coolant circuit, however this only gives an indication of the general motor operating temperature, not the winding temperature, and is therefore not recommended.
