mid reports of increased consumer confidence and spending in the latter days of 2011, the Lincoln business community is sounding upbeat and optimistic about their prospects in 2012. I spent a few minutes with incoming Mayor Spencer Short to discuss his views and plans regarding the upcoming business climate. I also selected a few business owners to get their sense of what to expect in the coming year.
Amazing Gracie owner Christa Nunez, right, shows customer Christine Hendricks a handmade dress. The shop, recently opened in downtown Lincoln, sells hand sewn dresses for children.
Dec. 8, Short pointed to economic development as being important for both sales tax and job creation. I asked him for more specifics regarding his views

on how he plans to encourage economic expansion. Short pointed to businessto-business growth as a new focus, meaning he and other city staff will ask Lincoln business owners to actively promote Lincoln as a business site for the suppliers with whom they do business. The mayor pointed to some of the new businesses that have recently opened in Lincoln as evidence that business interest in Lincoln is growing. A quick look at new Lincoln storefronts reveals childrens clothing store Amazing Gracie at 668 5th St., fabric shop and sewing studio Sew Katie Jean at 603 5th St. and Lincoln Boulevard Home Consignments

(Incoming Lincoln Mayor Spencer) Short will be looking to diversify Lincolns business base by encouraging better use of warehouse space at the Lincoln airport where aircraft maintenance and sales would be a natural fit.
Steakhouse/Saloon, a western-theme restaurant, will move into the former Beerman Restaurant site at 645 5th St. in February, according to earlier News Messenger reports. However, Short was unable to provide any new information regarding progress in meeting that timetable. Lincoln residents John and Mike Drust received an ABC license in October 2011 to serve wine, beer and liquor at the restaurant. Short also noted that he will be looking to diversify Lincolns business base by encouraging better use of warehouse space at the Lincoln airport where aircraft maintenance and sales would be a natural fit.

continued from page 3 business owners I interviewed in 2011 for their outlook for 2012. Book Cellar owner Debby Swindlar finds business opportunities in 2012 exciting. From her perspective at the gateway to downtown Lincoln, she sees change starting to take place in Lincoln as several new arrivals are becoming clients. Placer Pond and Water Garden owners Debra and Gary Sanford at 150 G St. are optimistic for 2012 as they look for space to expand their store. According to co-owner Gary Sanford, 2012 will be a time for his company to rededicate our services to our community. Providing maintenance servicing to customers in the Sun City Lincoln Hills subdivision has been a business mainstay according to Sanford, but in 2012, they will look to expand their services to the numerous farms and ranches that dot the Lincoln landscape. Most have ponds used for agriculture and thus require maintenance. Sanford wants to fill that need. Theyll also be building some new ponds as they now have a California State contractors license allowing them to do so. A beaming Marcus DeSalles, manager of the Safeway store in the Lincoln Hills Towne Center, told me the 2012 outlook is positive as he rushed to handle the holiday flow of customers. Gonzalo Alejandre, coowner of Panaderia La Michoacana at 616 5th St. in downtown Lincoln, echoed similar sentiments in the midst of his holiday customer rush.

Notes of Caution
But not every business owner sees 2012 in a positive light. Polly Brown, co-owner of PJs Mail & Parcel Service, saw her holiday customer traffic in 2011 at about the same level as in 2010. Im hoping for a better year, she said, but then went on to describe how her customers increasing Internet usage is threatening business growth. She pointed to some of the well publicized financial problems the U.S. Postal Service is having to underscore her point.
Pamela Elliott, co-owner of Lincoln Boulevard Home Consignments, decorated her shop's front window for the Dec. 3 open house.

Notes of promise
Lincoln entrepreneur Mina Reid began 2011 with two beauty salons and a coffee shop. She has since closed the coffee house and one salon. She remains upbeat, however, about her remaining salon at 1500 Del Webb Blvd. in Lincoln Hills which she says is doing well. Reid also said she is excited about 2012 and is anticipating a good year. When asked to summarize her thoughts on her business careers roller coaster ride over the past several months, Reid said, I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today. Reids optimistic summary seems to apply generally to most of the correspondents with whom we visited.

am a perpetual planner. I think of January as the Planners Month. I will try and plan out a good portion of my year in January. So why not take this month to reflect on your garden and yard? Reflect on what worked and what did not. Try and remember those yard chores that never were completed and make it your goal to do it this year. Think about those times when you went by a house that had a beautiful yard and you thought to yourself, I want to try that next year. If you plant a veggie garden, having a good plan of what and where you are going to plant your veggies will help you
keep from over-planting. When you get some garden catalogues, start marking the plants you would like to try and visit your local nursery to ask if it is a good plant for your specific needs. The busy months of pruning, fertilizing, weeding and planting are just around the corner. However, there are a few garden chores I would not ignore this month. If we continue to have a dry winter, then you should
make sure you water your plants in the ground and in containers. (If we have rain at least once a week you will not need to do any extra watering.) Also, this is the time to spray your dormant sprays to help reduce disease issues in the spring as well as some insect issues. Spray cooper spray to eliminate peach leaf curl and you can also use it on any roses that usually get black spot. Spay All Season Oil to kill off any over-wintering larvae that may be hiding in bark and branches of trees and bushes. Happy planning!

troversial vaccine in the veterinary circle. Red Rocks Biologics produces the vaccine for dogs and horses. It has conducted limited efficacy studies to back up their claims, due to the cost of conducting such studies and the ethical dilemma involved with defining a number of the variables to determine efficacy. Most information regarding the success of the vaccine is anecdotal from owners of pets that have been bitten
and veterinarians in the field. The age of the snake (young snakes release higher doses of venom in their bites) and amount of venom that the pet receives are important factors in determining the vaccines effectiveness. The location of the bite, the individual dogs immune system and the time since the last booster also affects the vaccines effectiveness. Red Rocks research indicates that the vaccine delivers good protection for about six months after boostering. Initial vaccination is recommended in February, with a booster given four weeks later.

Yearly boosters (one dose) are then given every March to cover the rattlesnake season in this area. Southern California has a prolonged snake season and veterinarians will usually booster exposed pets again in the fall. The vaccine is licensed to protect against Western Diamondback (Prairie, Great Basin, Northern and Southern Pacific varieties), Sidewinder, Timber Rattlesnake, Massasauga and the Copperheads. It is safe to use in pregnant and lactating dogs, puppies as young as 4months-old and older dogs. Side effects include mild swelling at the injection site (in less than 1 percent) and will resolve in three weeks. In rare cases, there can be vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy that can last up to one to two days. Traditional vaccine reactions are extremely rare and are estimated to occur at between one and three cases per million. Even with vaccination, a snake bite is an emergency. If your pet has been bitten, she/he should be taken to your local veterinarian for evaluation. At that point, additional treatments will be discussed based on size of pet, location of bite, and symptoms. Rattlesnake bites are deadly. Vaccinations can lessen
the severity of the symptoms and have been known to decrease the recovery period. If your pet has already been bitten in the past, they can be effectively vaccinated after waiting six weeks to allow for full recovery. Have a discussion in January with your veterinarian to determine if vaccinating your pet is appropriate. Rattlesnake season will soon be upon us!

ay tripping has long been a passion of mine. Even when my children were young and we lived in Montana, we would pack them up and head to the mountains for a day of hiking or exploring. I have only lived in the region a few months and I love being in an area that has four seasons. Its been a while since that has happened and it gives me so many opportunities to explore, hike and take pictures all year round. This is the perfect area to explore and the possibilities are endless. For me its a lot more fun to take
multiple trips, either for a day or weekend, than take one or two longer vacations over a year. I go somewhere every weekend and the direction or location usually depends on the weather. We are also uniquely located between the ocean and the mountains with literally hundreds of things to do and places to see. This time of the year as the snow starts falling in the mountains and the fog covers the ocean, there are still many shorter trips people can enjoy. One such place is the California State Railroad Museum complex located within the Old Sacramento
State Historic Park. The fascinating history of the region and the California Gold Rush is laid out and the walk through charming Old Town is a perfect afternoon outing. If you like history you will get plenty of it at the Railroad Museum. News of the 1848 discovery of gold in nearby Coloma traveled quickly around the world drawing thousands of people to the Sierra Nevada foothills. Sacramento sits at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers. It soon became the commercial center of the Gold Rush as it was the crossroads of transportation, connected by steam-
