Course Information
Course Name Prob. & Stats for Engineers

Course ID & Section STA 3032 Credit Hours Semester/Year Location 3 Spring 2011 Tuesday, Thursday 6:00PM 7:15PM Classroom: HPA - 0119

Course Description
STA 3032 ECS-IEMS 3 (3,0) Probability and Statistics for Engineers: Axioms of probability; combinatorial and geometrical probability; probability distributions; measures of location and dispersion; sampling and sampling distributions; estimation and tests of hypotheses; engineering applications. Prerequisite: MAC 2312

Course Objectives
After careful study and active participation in this course, the student will be able to:

Describe a set of data from an engineering perspective Build random samples Understand probability concepts and recognize how they should be applied to solve engineering problems. Draw inferences from both discrete and continuous random variables Verify normality assumptions and use data transformation strategies to achieve normality. Work with categorical data Build simple regression models for the purpose of prediction and estimation of a random variable of interest.

Required Textbook
Montgomery, Runger, Hubele: Engineering Statistics, 4th Edition, Wiley, 2007. ISBN 9780-471-73557-1 or 0-471-73557-4

Course Requirements
Assignment Number Exam Project Two (2) Four (4) Description Individual work in class Team Project One grade assigned for each project Recommended for practice, but not graded Weight 50% 40% 10% 0% 100%

Participation Four (4) Homework Total Zero (0)

* Assignments are equally graded (Exam: 25% each, Project: 10% each)

How will your participation grade be calculated? (Subject to change)

Although each project will be performed by a team, you will receive a participation grade from your team members. To ensure fairness in member-to-member grading, the average of the grades a member will give to himself and his or her team members should be equal to 90, as illustrated below. In addition, the maximum grade a member can be assigned is 100. INCORRECT CORRECT Yourself 100 90 Member 2 92 92 Member 3 88 88 Member 4 80 80 Member 5 100 100 Average 92/100 90/100 * CONFIDENTIALITY: The grade you assign your team members will remain confidential. In addition, participation grades will only be made available at the end of the semester.

In the example above, the team (for Project 1 for example) has six (6) members. Therefore, for each project, each student will receive 6 grades (including the one he/she assigned to him/herself. Over four (4) projects, each student will have 24 participation grades. Your final participation grade will be the average of the 24.

Missed Assignments/Make-Ups/Extra Credit

There is no extra credit. You will be given a timeframe to complete each project (see due dates below). REGARDLESS of the assignment, the instructor must be notified at least 2 weeks before

the first day of the assignment availability period, if the student cannot submit (or participate in) the assignment in the set period (see acceptable justification for missing assignment below). In such case (This applies ONLY to exams): o The student will be allowed the take the exam at a date and time set by the professor. o The date and time will be scheduled within 2 weeks of the official final exam date for this class, according to the UCF SPRING 2011 calendar.

Acceptable justifications for missing exam or homework include:

Type of justification Business trip Acceptable justification if The trip covers at least 75% of the project period. PROOF IS REQUIRED AT LEAST 2 WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF ASSIGNMENT. Medical proof of inability to perform work SUCH AS REQUIRED BY THE ASSIGNMENT Notes NO OTHER EXCUSE WILL BE ACCEPTED (justification for project deliverable: at least 2 members must satisfy one of the two justification AT THE SAME TIME for the team to be eligible for delivery date revision)

Severe illness

* Given the date scheduled for Exam 2, missing Exam 2 will certainly result in failing this class (Grade: F), as there will certainly be no opportunity for make-up.

Evaluation and Grading

Grade A Points General Comments (Will probably not apply to each individual case)

The student has demonstrated outstanding mastery of the course content. The student has [90, 100) demonstrated outstanding commitment to his or her teams, and outstanding contribution to his or her team project in all projects. [80, 90) The student has demonstrated mastery of the course content. The student has demonstrated significant commitment to his or her team, and adequate contribution to his or her team project in all projects. The student has demonstrated basic understanding of the course content. The student has demonstrated less than adequate commitment to his or her team or less than adequate contribution to his or her team project in some projects. The student has demonstrated less than adequate commitment to his or her team and less than adequate contribution to his or her team project in most projects. I am not sure

Attendance is not taken. However, as a courtesy, each student is expected to notify the professor when he/she will not be attending a lecture. Additionally, it is the students responsibility to catch up with the rest of the class if a lecture is missed. You may communicate with other students regarding missed classes. You will have access to the class material. Do not request from the instructor or the graduate teaching assistant a review or any information regarding missed classes.

Academic Honesty
Plagiarism and Cheating of any kind on an examination, quiz, or assignment will result at least in an "F" for that assignment (and may, depending on the severity of the case, lead to an "F" for the entire course) and may be subject to appropriate referral to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. See the UCF Golden Rule for further information. I will assume for this course that you will adhere to the academic creed of this University and will maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. In other words, don't cheat by giving answers to others or taking them from anyone else. I will also adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity, so please do not ask me to change (or expect me to change) your grade illegitimately or to bend or break rules for one person that will not apply to everyone.
