Welcome to Delphos! Our city is located in Northwest Ohio along the US30 corridor. US30, previously known as Lincoln Highway, was the first trans-continental highway in the United States and helped Delphos prosper. The Miami-Erie Canal was also instrumental in the development of Delphos and runs through the heart of our city. The same work ethic and perseverance that it took to build the canal and the Lincoln Highway is still evident in Delphos today. Our forefathers worked in the face of much adversity and many hardships to establish this wonderful place that we now call home. That is why we are all very proud of Delphos and of our heritage. Our churches, schools, businesses and organizations are second to none and stand as a testament to our founders. Whenever our citizens are called on to lend a hand, there is always an abundance of volunteerism and good will toward many worthwhile causes. Delphos has also positioned itself for future progress with our new reservoir and water treatment plant and our state-of-the-art membrane waste water treatment plant. We invite you to learn more about our city, so please call, e-mail, or visit our web site, and see why Delphos is known as Americas Friendliest City. We look forward to meeting you! Thank You! Delphos has the distinction of being situated in two counties. The Miami and Erie Canal divides it into two nearly equal portions. The part east of this canal lies in Allen County, and the part west is within Van Wert County. In 1840, when the first vote was taken in Washington Township, only 10 votes were cast,

and Thomas W. Bowdle was elected justice of the peace. The first plat of the town was made by Ferdinand Bredeick, on the west side of the canal, and the Rev. John Otto Bredeick, coming a couple of years later, laid out the addition on the east side of the canal. John was a Roman Catholic priest, and reserved a large
plat of ground for church purposes. He gave this as a free gift. For a number of years, early Delphos was known as East Bredeick and West Bredeick. There were a couple of other little settlements, which were known respectively as: Section Ten and Howard Town. The two former being settled by Germans and other

two by English speaking people. It was finally decided to adopt one name for the four settlements and, after a meeting called for that purpose, the name Delphos was suggested by Father Bredeick, and it was adopted. From that time all jealousy ceased, and all citizens began to work for the common good. To this harmonious action may be credited the
growth of the settlement. Delphos was incorporated in 1851, and the first election was held on March 3 of that year, at which Col. Lester Bliss was elected mayor, and Smith Talbott, recorder. N. White, J. P. Cowan, J. P. Murphy, and Theodore Wrocklage were chosen the first councilmen. Much of the growth may also

be attributed to the liberal views held by Father Bredeick. Although brought up under the narrow, old country standards, he adopted in the broadest and most liberal manner American views, and encouraged those of all nationalities and all faiths to settle there. He was ready to assist one as another, and gave a plat to the Presbyterians on which to build a
church. He said he did not want a Catholic town, as that would make the people selfish and narrow. He wanted all classes and all creeds to commingle. The post office occupied a small room built on a platform of the lock between the gates of the canal, on the Van Wert County side. Amos Clutter was the postmaster in 1847. The first hotel was opened
in the spring of 1845. It was built by Morgan Savage, and was named Travelers Rest. The second was built by James Graver, in the same year, and was called the Ohio House. When the Ohio & Indiana Railroad, a part of the Pennsylvania Companys main line, was built in Rev. Johannes Otto Bredeick 1854, much of the iron for its construction was brought down by the canal from Toledo. The Delphos & Indianapolis Railroad was opened in 1875, and was completed to Toledo three years later. It is now known as the Toledo, St. Louis & Western Railroad. This was at first a narrow gauge railroad, but the track was afterward standardized. To Father Bredeick was due the building up of the first Roman Catholic congregation. He gave to it the splendid site now occupied by the church edifice. A log chapel first served the small town, but a more pretentious church was begun in 1846. In that same year, the Methodists held their first services, in the cabin of R. M. Petticord, at which five persons were present. Rev John Graham officiated as minister. When E. N. Marlen, an ordained minister, came to Section Ten in 1848, he facilitated the building of the church. A couple of years later the

foundation stone was laid. The Presbyterian Church was organized about the same time by Rev. Richard Graham. The congregation was very small, and a church edifice was not begun for almost a score of years, as the congregation had been decimated, first by a scourge of cholera and afterward by the Civil War.

Leslie Peltier was born on a small farm east of Delphos on Jan. 2, 1900. Growing up on a farm surrounded by forests and bordered by the Auglaize River, Leslie quickly acquired an appreciation and love of nature and the natural world. His introduction to the night sky occurred at age five when his mother introduced him to the Pleiades on a crisp, clear, winter night. A book from a kindly librarian brought the rest of the universe into focus and Leslies quest for knowledge of the night sky took off. As a teen Leslie earned $18 for a mail order telescope by picking 900 quarts of strawberries on his fathers farm, earning two cents per quart. The 2i refractor arrived a few weeks later and 64 continuous years of night time observing began. Four years of sweeping the night sky for comets finally came to fruition on

Friday, November 13, 1925. Leslie came upon a fuzzy something in a cluster of stars. He focused in on this something and saw it had the trademark tail of a comet. Exhilarated, Leslie carefully plotted the location and telephoned the Delphos telegram station. Finding it closed and his only option the signal tower at the Pennsylvania Railroad station, Leslie raced toward Delphos in the dark on his bicycle. The telegram of his find to the Harvard College Observatory was answered a week later with the news that he had, indeed, discovered a new comet. Merry Go Round Observatory

breaking Merry-GoRound observatory. For the first time an entire observatory rotated to follow the stars. This new observatory followed the Peltiers to their new home, Brookhaven, in 1948. In 1959, Stanley Peltier, Leslie and Dotties youngest son, was a student at Miami University in Oxford. During ren-
ovation the universitys observatory was scheduled to be razed. Stanley convinced the university that his father could use the observatory and its 12i refractor telescope. Within a few months, the observatory was erected about 100 yards north of the Peltier home at Brookhaven. For the next 20 years the observatory would scour the night sky and host thousands of interested stargazers and school children. Leslie Peltier died of a heart attack in 1980. His death was mourned by all across the astronomy world. His hometown of Delphos honored his life with a memorial sun dial, above, on the grounds of the public library, where he served on the board for more than 30 years.

The Bredeick-Lang House, located at the corner of Second and Cass streets and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located on acreage originally purchased to establish Delphos. It was still owned by descendants of the founding fathers until September 2009. Built in 1859-60, the Bredeick-Lang House occupies a small portion of the 240 acres that Ferdinand Bredeick purchased in 1843 when land contracts surrounding the Miami-Erie Canal finally were put on the market. Ferdinand Bredeick lived only until 1846. However, with Maria Wrocklage of Glandorf, he had three children who survived to adulthood: Maria Bernadina, Maria Victoria and Amelia (who was the
first child born in the new settlement Ten Mile Woods in 1843). Maria Victoria built the Bredeick-Lang House on property she inherited from her father and lived there with her husband, Charles Shenk, from 1861 to 1881. When Maria Victoria died in 1881, she left the house to her sister Amelia (George) Lang. During Amelias
ownership, the Bredeick-Lang House was used in a variety of ways, including as a tea house and funeral parlor. The house was passed on to George and Amelias youngest son, Otto G. Lang, and his wife, Mayme, in the late 1920s, and to Otto and Maymes only child, James, in the 1950s. In May of 1982, the Bredeick-Lang House was placed on the
National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service of the US Department of the Interior. The Bredeick-Lang House was found to be architecturally significant as an excellent example of early Italian Villa, a style rare in midwestern Ohio. It also was found to be historically significant as a family residence of the Bredeicks.
