BIRLA GOA CAMPUS, INSTRUCTION DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2011-2012 Course Handout for Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
Date: 30.07.2011 Course No. Course Title Instructor-in-Charge Instructor Instructor (Tutorial) : : : : : CHE C311 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Dr. Srinivas Krishnaswamy Dr. Srinivas Krishnaswamy Mrs. Vaishnavi Unde

1. Course Description: Development and applications of the combined first and second laws; relations between state properties; chemical equilibria in reacting and non-reacting systems; statistical concepts, and brief exposure to irreversible thermodynamics; extensive problem assignments throughout. 2. Scope & Objective: The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive treatment of thermodynamics (maintaining the standard of rigor demanded by sound thermodynamic analysis) from a chemical engineering viewpoint. The most important problems the chemical engineer must be able to cope with will be emphasized, viz. heat and work requirements for many physical and chemical process, determination of equilibrium constants for chemical reactions and for the transfer of chemical species between phases. 3. Text Book (TB): J. M. Smith, H. C. Van Ness and M. M. Abbott, Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, MGHFSE, 7th Edition 4. Reference Books: (RB) RB1 YVC Rao, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Universities Press, 1997 RB2 KV Narayanan, A Textbook of Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Prentice Hall of India, 2001 4.
