Benchmark Take Panels To The Next Level

A new CPD seminar approved by RIBA and the CPD Certification Service, has been introduced by Kingspan Benchmark to examine the development of prefabricated insulated panel systems within the wider context of innovations in unitised building solutions. The new CPD seminar discusses the benefits of off-site build wall units that can be over 7 metres high by 3.5 metres wide, combined with on-site dry construction, allowing quicker and safer installation, greater predictability in work schedules and simplifying compliance with new regulations. It looks at how insulated panel technology has developed from industrial cladding into a more advanced unitised system compatible with a large range of architectural faades from Kingspan Benchmark. Modular building approaches offer solutions to some of the key issues of modern construction, ensuing thermal performance while reducing building costs, and this CPD seminar provides an example of how one approach has developed from standard prefabricated insulation into a full through wall unitised solution. www.kingspanbenchmark.com

Code Level 6 EcoHouse Uses Prefabricated Masonry Panels

Lawn House, a Code Level 6 ecohouse built in Burbage, Leicestershire is the first private development in the UK to be constructed using prefabricated brick and block cavity walls. The designer, Penny Shankar of Nelemor Projects, wanted to build a zero carbon brick and block house and approached brick manufacturer, Hanson Building Products to discuss whether prefabricated cavity wall panels and the benefits of off-site manufacturing could deliver a Code 6 building. Although prefabricated panels and composite panels have been used for many years, actual prefabricated cavity walls, where the two leaves are tied to gether in the factory, are still a fairly new concept. Hansons Yorkshire Red Blend light textured, wirecut facing bricks were chosen to meet the design criteria and to blend in with the local architecture. Each tailored brick panel, insulation and a 100mm Thermalite inner leaf block were bonded together in the factory with a high strength modified mortar. All in all, twenty panels were used, weighing up to seven tonnes each and measuring up to nine metres in length, all of which were constructed, lifted and delivered to site without any damage. The result is a house that brings together the most up to date developments in off-site masonry construction, natural ventilation and the benefits of thermal mass. Inside the house are a number of other sustainable features including an innovative super-insulated thermal store, greywater and rainwater harvesting and a sustainable urban drainage system. In addition, Lawn house is one of the only domestic properties in the UK to feature solar photovoltaic panels across its entire south facing roof. When it comes to off-site construction, Hanson Building Products has been developing this technology for some time with the construction of the Hanson EcoHouse, a concept house, at the Building Research Extablishment in Watford, using theHanson QuickBuild walling system. The project was particularly important as it provided the first example of prefabricated cavity walls comprising 100mm stack-bonded Hanson clay facing brickwork outer leaf, 100mm Thermalite aircrete blockwork inner leaf, and a partial fill cavity with 100mm rigid insulation and a 50mm air space. According to Hanson, the energy saved by thermal mass in a masonry house can offset the higher levels of embodied CO2 (compared to lightweight structures) in as little ten years, ultimately leading to the lowest whole life CO2 emissions. As well as providing thermal mass, the use of off-site manufactured masonry panels can result in increased quality and speed of construction, with little or no wastage. The process is also less susceptible to weather delays compared to traditional on-site construction techniques The manufacturer says the automated factory machinery can provide the efficiency of one weeks site work in a single day. The process also ensures a high degree of air tightness between the individual elements. The units themselves can be manufactured to allow electrical conduits, sockets etc, to be pre-fixed in the factory. Further benefits include consistent factory-controlled quality, rapid all-weather construction, higher-resistance to rain penetration and no on-site wastage (compared with an industry average of 20 per cent wastage). www.brick.org.uk

American Softwoods In Europe, The Middle East And India

A perspective on the re-launched American Softwoods promotion campaign from program director, Charles Trevor. American Softwoods is adopting a pro-active approach to wood promotion in Europe and further afield. They have re-launched and refocused the American Softwoods brand to make sure the industry is fully aware of the advantages, opportunities and benefits of species such as Southern Yellow Pine, Douglas fir and hemlock in a wide range of applications, both commercial and domestic. They are encouraging the use of American softwoods for internal and external projects and are working with the timber industry, providing technical information and assistance to develop the market for these under-used species. New information and technical guidance has been produced in the form of four new brochures focusing on the environmental credentials of Southern Yellow Pine, Profiles, Decks and pressure treated wood, which are available in PDF format at www.southernpineglobal.com. American Softwoods was one of the first organisations to confirm their support for Timber Expo in Coventry in September, and has worked with the Timber Decking and Cladding Association to mount two seminars for the timber industry this autumn. A series of advertisements has also been created, focusing on low carbon, low impact and naturally renewable key messages, and a brand new web site has now been launched at www. americansoftwoods.com. The highlight of activity in the UK was at Timber Expo, a new timber-focused exhibition in the UK taking place in September. Eight SFPA and SEC members participated at the show and used their time to meet with buyers and UK importers to help develop their business and the wider market. Timber Expo saw the first use of our new purposebuilt exhibition stand which incorporates a Southern Yellow Pine deck and samples of all the main US softwood species. American Softwoods is also supporting the UKs Wood Awards, a long-standing and well respected architectural competition recognising the excellence of wood in new commercial and private buildings. Raising the profile within the architectural community through the Wood Awards gives American Softwoods a platform for its message. www.americansoftwoods.com

Wiconas Highly Sustainable Test Centre Generates 60 Per Cent More Electricity Than It Needs For Its Own Operations
In its first year of operation, the new dedicated test centre for Wiconas faade products one of the first energy-positive industrial buildings in Europe has generated 60 per cent more electricity than it needs for its own consumption. Located at Bellenberg near the Wicona Brand Development Centre at Ulm in Germany, the f3.5m scheme provides in-house testing facilities for new products and project-specific faade solutions which can then be independently certified to the latest European standards. The test centre is designed to be highly energy efficient and sustainable. Roofmounted photovoltaic panels generate sufficient power for heating, lighting and operating the entire building, making it one of Europes first energypositive production buildings. Daily energy monitoring has shown that the building has generated enough energy to be self-sufficient and to deliver a significant level of electricity into the national grid. You can now track the energy performance of the test centre and monitor its power generation and consumption levels see www.zeb-bellenberg.com. A key factor in helping to reduce the energy consumption of the building to as little as 23kWh/m2a around the same as a standard passive house is its highly efficient Wicona faade. This is integrated with the building services and low energy technology, and is also highly glazed to allow most of the product testing to be carried out without the need for artificial lighting. Other energy-efficient features of the new test centre include the use of heat pumps and a closed water circuit to minimise water consumption for the large volumes required for faade tests. The in-house testing procedures and equipment for the building were developed by Wicona in conjunction with IFT Rosenheim (Institute of Window Technology), an independent accreditor. Facilities include: Two faade test rigs allowing samples up to 10m by 10m to be rigorously tested under a full range of weather performance and safety conditions air permeability, static and dynamic water pressure, wind and impact resistance A testing rig for combinations of windows, doors and fixed light glazing with frame sizes of up to 3.6m by 2.9m, assessing air permeability, water tightness, and wind and impact resistance A fitting rig to carry out performance tests on doors and windows up to 4m high, and their fittings and accessories. www.wicona.co.uk

previous dialysis facility in the hospital will now be reconfigured for use by the ophthalmology department. The 954sqm single-storey building was constructed to a challenging programme and comprises 27 steel-framed modules which were craned into position in just four days. Commenting on the project, Syd Jamieson, Project Manager at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said, This new unit provides a much improved facility out in the local community. The Yorkon approach gave us the speed of construction we needed to meet our priorities for facility improvement. It was delivered on time and on budget, and we are very happy with the finished building. It has freed up space within the hospital for use by another department and has created a welcoming, high quality environment for our dialysis patients. We would definitely recommend the Yorkon approach and consider using it again. Designed by Yorkon, the centre features cedar wood cladding to the main entrance elevation, a blue fascia with co-ordinating blue doors and windows, and white render to the other faades. Facilities include an open plan area with 29 dialysis stations and four private cubicles, dirty and clean utilities, reception area, seminar room, kitchen, staff room/showers, IT room, consultation rooms and administrative offices. Yorkon has a strong track record in the healthcare sector, which includes more than 50 projects for around 50 NHS trusts and private sector health providers. The Plymouth scheme follows the successful completion of a renal unit at Arbroath Infirmary for NHS Tayside in Scotland where Yorkon reduced time on site to just eight weeks and completed the project two weeks ahead of schedule. This significantly reduced disruption for the Trust and brought the facility into rapid service to the benefit of patient care.

Title: A Pure Spa Experience Is The Order Of The Day In Britains Only Natural Thermal Spa Location: City of Bath Application: Stannah Microlift Visit: www.stannahlifts.co.uk

The minute you step into this tranquil mixture of historic grandeur and cutting architecture nestled right in the centre of the stunning City of Bath, you are enveloped in a sense of well-being. This sense extends throughout the building and is assisted in three areas by a Stannah Microlift or dumbwaiter. This service lift vitally moves fresh, exciting and healthy foods from the third floor professional kitchen through three floors of the building. Directly below the kitchen on the second floor is a function room with catering included, so the lift ensures delivery with no fuss and on time. The first-floor restaurant is the final stop for the lift and is absolutely crucial to customer service satisfaction. Peter Rollins, Sales and Marketing Manager at Thermae Bath Spa, explains: When the building was opened to the public five years ago we didnt initially

have the facility of a dumbwaiter. How I wished we had. Since installing the Stannah Microlift this year the movement of food from the kitchen has become so much easier and reliable. The lift was installed very quickly and neatly, with most of the work being completed overnight so our routine was only minimally disrupted. We were very pleased with the process of purchasing the lift and even more pleased to have the benefits of it every day. The City of Bath has three principal natural springs. The Kings Spring supplies the world-famous Roman Baths. Thermae Bath Spa uses the natural hot spring water from the Kings, Hetling and Cross Springs in all four of its thermal pools. Its amazing to think that this water fell as rain around 10,000 years ago, heats naturally beneath the earths crust, emerges at a temperature of 45 degrees centigrade and contains 42 different minerals.

The Microlift 50CBD with bottom drive, just one product in the Microlift range, is serviced by the Bristol branch of Stannah Lift Services, a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support. This covers service, repair, modernisation and refurbishment of all types of lifts, stairlifts, escalators and moving walkways not only those from the Stannah product range, but also other lift manufacturers equipment. Stannah also offers a bespoke lifts service, custom-building lifts to meet customers specific requirements. Find out more about the Thermae Bath Spa experience at www.thermaebathspa.co.uk

Schooldays are said to be the best days of your life Arch Timber Protection, a Lonza Company, is ensuring that they are also the safest, using its DRICON fire retardant treatment to protect internal timber at the new Passmores Academy building, Harlow, Essex. In September 2011, the students move into the new building at Tracyes Road, Harlow, which was designed in collaboration with the school staff to meet the needs of the staff and students. This purpose-built site includes environmentallyfriendly building materials, such as internal natural wood linings. Arch used a DRICON Euroclass B fire treatment to protect around 10,000 linear metres of FSC-certified European oak cladding supplied by national timber merchant Arnold Laver Timber World, which was installed by joiners and carpenters M&S Contractors, which used the oak internal wood cladding for the largest internal cladding aspect of the project. Arnold Laver Timber World branch sales representative Richard Claridge says: We have a long relationship with Arch, and we always recommend them when we offer fire retardant treated timber. This is because we want to use a company we know and trust, who can work alongside us to provide an individually tailored service to suit the project in hand, and who can provide

documentation to prove that the treatment will be suitable. We were proud to work with Arch Timber Protection and M&S Contractors on such a high calibre and unique project, and we are confident that we have supplied some of the best materials available on the market. Western Red Cedar cladding supplied by International Timber was also used to create the effective external sign on the building. These timbers had a NONCOM Exterior fire retardant treatment from Arch. Arch Timber Protection fire retardant sales manager Jacqui Hughes says: Its important to protect our young people and the buildings where they study, and we are delighted to be involved in this stunning new academy project. The combination of our proven DRICON and NON-COM Exterior fire retardant treatments will provide a long term protection for years to come, whilst allowing the natural beauty of the timbers to shine through.

Title: Heatherwick Brings New Life In Black Walnut To Worth Abbey Location: Worth Abbey Church Application: American Black Walnut Visit: www.americanhardwood.org

Nestled on a crest overlooking the South Downs, Worth Abbey Church has a striking aspect. Its remarkable conical sloping roof sets off the extensive, peaceful grounds and the rolling landscape below. The 25 English Benedictine monks who reside at the Abbey run a school, a parish and a place of retreat. The Abbey Church was designed by the architect Francis Pollen, and is considered by many to be the best example of his style. Since its opening in 1974, the Abbeys furniture comprised freestanding chairs which impinged on the ambiance, creating a cluttered, temporary feel. The Monks decided that it was time to undertake some refurbishment work and took the opportunity to have a more cohesive, relevant and purposefully designed congregational and clergy furniture. They commissioned Heatherwick Studio to design and develop a furniture strategy as part of wider renovations to the Abbey Church. The furniture package included pew benches, choir stalls with misericord seats and desks, benches, credence tables, server seats and reconciliation (confessional) rooms. Heatherwick Studio is headed by Thomas Heatherwick who trained at Manchester Polytechnic and the RCA. Since its founding in 1994, the studio has earned a reputation for coming up with artistically exciting solutions to clients design briefs. The studio consists of team with a wide range of disciplines including architecture, product design, model making, fabrication, landscape design, fine art and curation, and they are used to working in a sensitive historic context, which was vital for the work undertaken within Worth Abbey. They also have a very strong making ethos, and a workshop within the practice allows them to make prototypes and models, giving them a very valuable makers eye view of all the commissions they undertake. The original auditorium space of the Abbey has a tangible spiritual feel to it; a difficult thing to achieve with modern materials without the obvious historical and religious architectural references. Natural stone and neutral colouring make the space light and airy. Heatherwick wanted to complement the materials used by Pollen and decided to use solid wood throughout for the new furniture. In a space that uses natural and neutral tones, a more traditional choice might have been oak or a more modern option could have been a pale species like maple. Heatherwick took a braver move and chose American black walnut to give a colourful aspect to the chapel, the darker heartwood creating a distinctive, defined line to the design, and the creamy sapwood adding a touch of warmth without over powering the celebrants and congregation who are the main focus of any service. According to Thomas Heatherwick, Walnut was chosen because the darker colour would give a more precise line and would in the dusky calm of the auditorium reflect a richness without adding too sharp an accent.

The main nave is a big area serving congregations of 700 people, and with capacity for double that number. The design approach has kept the circular nature of the space with a stone altar in the middle. The original furniture did not have kneelers for the congregation so these were designed as an integral part of the seating. Furniture fabrication was undertaken by Artezan, a specialist joinery division within Swift Horsman, a UK-based company chosen for their flexible and experienced approach to the complex method of construction. Swift were up for the challenge and have delivered it successfully. Thomas Heatherwick says he is immensely impressed with both the quality of the work of the craftsmen, the finish and the commitment of the firm to a very challenging commission. The way the furniture is constructed is central to the whole theme of the Heatherwick design. Having decided on solid wood and a clean lined approach, Thomas and the team at Heatherwick came up with a striking laminated design which complements the square walls of the church and the radial nature of its layout. Due movement issues inherent in working with all-solid wood construction, an interior metal frame allows the natural characteristics of the timber to come through and be strong enough to easily manage everyday use. This frame links the kneelers to the seating, making each pew a standalone piece. Working with the team at Swift Horsman, complex jigs were designed and developed to cope with the complicated glue-ups that were part and parcel of the design. The most intriguing and subtle aspect is a 0.6mm line of ash which is laminated into the layers of black walnut. This adds a sense of detail that gives it an historical link to the traditions of inlay within the craft but with a very contemporary and sculptural feel. At a distance it is barely there, but the closer you get to the furniture the more apparent and thus more effective it becomes, giving a gentle element of understated surprise to the overall effect. This is the most artistic aspect of the whole concept and it runs throughout the whole collection of furniture; the central monks seat shows it most dramatically, where the angle of the laminating meets the curve of the back, creating a wave effect in the ash veneer. This helps give a central focus to the lead preacher of the day. The overall impression is that the furniture definitely adds a cohesive feel to Pollens concept while allowing the practical considerations of running and attending a service to actually work. Thomas Heatherwick, his team and Swift Horsman are to be congratulated on a distinctive and extremely high quality solution both in terms of its ideas and its craftsmanship.

Spanish Bank Invests In Hunter Douglas Dual Tone Finish

Hunter Douglas has supplied a dual tone version of its high-performance QuadroClad ventilated faade system to complete a striking finish for the Caja Rural bank in Mengibar, Spain. More than 2,500m of coated QuadroClad panels were used to create the subtle aesthetic, in which the faade appears to change from blue to white depending on the angle and light. The product finish, which was achieved through an innovative coating called EuraMica, from Euramax, is now available in the UK. The dual tone is created using Mica platelets which are applied as a secondary colour on top of a base coating. The platelets reflect either their own colour or the base colour depending on the angle they are viewed at. Hunter Douglas fixed Aerofoils were also specified to provide the sun control element on the building in the Andalusia region of Spain. David Harris, general manager of Hunter Douglas Projects in the UK, said: Architects continue to strive for new ways to make their buildings stand out from the crowd. Thanks to innovations such as this dual tone finish, Hunter Douglas continues to provide the solutions that create aesthetic excellence as well as high performance and quality. The architect for the Caja Rural project was Juan del Corro Garcia-Lomas. The main contractor was Detea. www.hunterdouglas.co.uk

Shackerley Ceramic Granite Gives 25m Healthcare Building Extra Sheen

Gleaming ceramic granite ventilated facades supplied by Shackerley have provided an exceptionally high standard of aesthetic finish, inside and out, at the new 25m state-of-the-art Institute of Transplantation at Newcastle upon Tynes Freeman Hospital. Shackerleys Sureclad ventilated cladding has not only helped Ryder Architecture and BAM to deliver a landmark healthcare building for The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust: the facility to install thermal and acoustic insulation within the cavity behind the facades has also contributed towards a BREEAM standard of Very Good. Ceramic granite was specified for its premium aesthetic qualities and durable, hardwearing and low maintenance characteristics. A highly polished white ceramic granite facade panel was selected to clad the enclosed courtyard at the heart of the facility and to frame the main entrance to the building. The same panel has also been used internally to provide sleek, reflective floor to ceiling wall cladding inside the lofty reception area. A contrasting charcoal black ceramic granite panel, again with a highly polished finish clads adjacent elevations and lift lobbies, providing maximum dramatic effect. All the exterior and interior ceramic cladding was installed by roofing and facade installation specialist Keyclad, part of the Bowmer & Kirkland Group. Ryder Architecture Associate Mike Melia said: The Trust was determined that the new building should leave staff, patients and visitors in no doubt that this is a world leading healthcare facility. We were not constrained by preconceptions of how a hospital should look, and were urged to specify premium quality materials throughout. We knew that we could rely on Shackerleys ceramic granite to deliver a high quality finish but when we saw the finished results we were really pleased how attractive it looked, particularly in the reception and courtyard. Steven Bannister, Director of Estates and Facilities for the Trust agreed: Our new facility really is top class. Ryder Architecture have exceeded all our expectations, especially where the interior and exterior cladding finishes are concerned. Gammas LED Downlights Are Chosen For The Manchester United Hospitality Refurb
As the football season drew to a close it was time for Old Trafford to commence its renovation projects including the hospitality areas in the West Stand and South East Quadrant, all of which needed to be completed before The Clubs testimonial, which was no mean feat when you consider that the match was only a couple of months away. Having been previously let down on lead times and serviced by a key player in the lighting industry, Manchester United FC was understandably nervous about appointing a new supplier with whom they could rely on to supply all the fittings on time and to budget. Alard Electrical Ltd, the electrical contractors for the renovation project, had previously worked with Gamma on other projects and so was happy to recommend the company as a reliable partner for the lighting requirements of the renovation. The renovation of the hospitality area in the West and South East Stand Quadrants was a prestigious project and the selected LED fittings had to help create a luxurious ambience that reflected the high-end surroundings, yet didnt detract from the other creative and decorative lighting features. With this in mind the TTX 700 lumen, 3000K with 60 beam and centre etched glass was chosen for the ambient lighting in the corridor areas. In addition to the TTX fittings, Syncro M, S1 and S2 LED lights were selected for the adjustable display lighting to highlight the various pictures which adorn the corridor walls as well as above the doorways leading off the corridors. For the toilets and hospitality bar area the Buddy M fitting was selected as an excellent low energy alternative to the 50W halogen GU10. The Buddy M provided a cost effective adjustable and lockable gimbal, 40 beam angle and a warm colour temperature of 2700K. www.gamma-uk.com

Talon Gives A Neighbourly Cover Up

Neil Ellwood, Managing Director of Solarpack, recently completed the decoration of his brand new showroom in Rochester in Kent. With his solar panels displayed on the walls against a warm background dcor of cinnamon and gold, the effect was warm and tasteful but somewhat spoiled by unsightly electric terminals and cables. That was before Talon Manufacturing became involved. Talons Commercial Director, Don Theobald had an instant answer to the problem since his companys products include a range of Cover Profiles that could have been made for the job. For the main part of the cover up a uPVC box cover 200 x 200mm was installed horizontally at ground level, raised further by the insertion of an extension strip 50mm high and firmly fixed by a joint strip. The boxs standard 3 metre length was increased by a further metre by the addition of another cover simply sawn to the required size and almost seamlessly finished with a stop end. The resultant boxed cover not only concealed all exposed cables but also provided unobtrusive siting for several electrical sockets on the vertical face as well as forming an excellent display shelf on the horizontal surface. www.talon.co.uk

Encasement Casings Chosen For New Council Services Centre In Brighton

A major refurbishment project undertaken by Brighton & Hove Council to create a new customer services centre for Brighton residents at Bartholomew House is using aluminium Forma column casings from Encasement to conceal ground floor structural columns at the 1.8 million scheme. Each 860mm diameter column casing is manufactured from lightweight aluminium and incorporates a 1750mm diameter disc at the top of the 2.7 metre high casing to create an aesthetic finish to the installation that matches the diameter of the circular seating design. Bright colours have also been used throughout the interior design to enhance the contemporary look and feel of the ground floor layout and the column casings are finished in a RAL 5015 blue polyester powder coated (PPC) finish, which contrasts with the bright green seating and interior dcor to help guide visitors to the correct area. A PPC finish is also applied to the ceiling level header discs, which are finished in white to help reflect light downwards onto the seating. The entire project is expected to deliver a 12% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by the end of 2013 and produce around 300,000 of cost savings each year. www.encasement.co.uk

Planning With Paving

The trade association Interpave has just published two new case studies demonstrating the latest thinking on urban design, hard landscape and sustainable drainage. The first explores the external spaces at the Stirling Prize winning Accordia housing in Cambridge while the second discusses how permeable paving enables water to be used as a landscape and biodiversity asset. Interpaves Accordia case study reviews current progress on this important, part-completed project and the success of earlier phases in use. In particular, it considers the way in which masterplanning, applied through the planning system, ensures ongoing and consistent application of good design, detailing and implementation of hard surfaces. One particularly impressive aspect of Accordia is the attention to detail taken with paving. This mirrors the care taken by the designers in detailing the buildings themselves often forgotten on other schemes. In another new case study, Interpave looks at the work of Sustainable Drainage Consultants and Landscape Architects Robert Bray Associates, which goes beyond just compliance with planning requirements and legislation for SUDS. With a diverse selection of project examples, permeable paving is used in fresh, inventive ways in tune with the natural site characteristics to enrich the environment, improve biodiversity and sustainability and to add some fun to the local environment. Key to this approach is the use of concrete block permeable paving to store and treat rainwater runoff, providing a gradual source of clean water which is then handled as an asset for a wide range of uses on site. Both case studies can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource at www.paving.org.uk

Permeable Paving For Amenity

There is more to concrete block permeable paving than just meeting the latest legislative demands to help reduce flooding. It can also provide a controlled source of clean water as a sustainable amenity for landscaping, ecology and water harvesting, as a leading SUDS specialist has demonstrated. As a most versatile sustainable drainage system (SUDS) technique, concrete block permeable paving is particularly useful as a source control at the head of the SUDS management train. It reduces peak rate, total volume and frequency of rainwater runoff, and is also particularly effective at removing water-borne pollution. But it also offers the important and often missed - opportunity of a gradual supply of treated water, something that Bob Bray of Robert Bray Associates exploits for amenity, harvesting and habitat enhancement in recent projects. At a high-density town-centre housing scheme in Stamford, most public areas between buildings are concrete block permeable paving which also accepts runoff from other hard areas and roofs. Stored, treated water then passes from the paving directly into planted rills and canals, which add interest and much-needed greenery to the courtyard environment, before passing into the nearby river. This principle is expanded on a hillside Co-housing scheme in Stroud. Here, treated, stored water from concrete block permeable paved car parking feeds a waterfall onto a planted swale, then via planted rills into a wildlife pond and existing stream. At a pioneering school in Milton Keynes, a terraced sequence of permeable paving car parks removes pollutants, substantially improving the quality of water serving two ponds intended to encourage long-term population by wildlife - notably the protected great crested newts indigenous to the site. Other sections of concrete block permeable paving at the school - on level areas used for play - collect and store rainwater for toilet flushing in the school buildings. Building designers wishing to make the most of impressive scenery or landscape views can now take advantage of Rotos Patio Life sliding door system. This unique hardware suite enables very large glass sizes, filling rooms with natural light whilst at the same time making remarkably easy work of sliding large, heavy door sashes. Patio Life is the next step on from a lift and slide system. The Roto product negates the need for the lift element with its mechanism that moves the gaskets in order to make the seal. The result is sliding doors whose ease of use belies their weight up to 400 kg. Sashes containing glazed units over 3 metres wide are possible. The threshold offers excellent thermal insulation, resulting in U-values low enough for the system to have been specified in Passive House projects. Roto has also introduced a new low-profile threshold to comply with Part M of the Building Regulations. Another unique advantage is ventilation with full security: the vent mode allows airflow when the sash is fully closed and locked. Various design schemes are possible and the hardware is suitable for door sets made from timber or other composite materials. Laser-Optimised Structural Profiles Extend The Scope Of Schueco Jansens Steel Faade System
A range of laser-optimised structural profiles from leading steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen greatly extends the architectural scope of the companys tried and tested VISS steel faade system. Developed in conjunction with Montanstahl AG, the new VISS Ixtra profiles use innovative connecting technology to provide the structural strength needed to allow mullions to run continuously over more than one storey. In addition, they give architects greater overall scope for creativity by significantly widening the design possibilities open to them. VISS Ixtra has six basic profiles that can vary in width from 50mm to 100mm and in depth from 30mm to 300mm, with a maximum length of 15 metres. Shapes can be laser-cut into the profiles before welding to add visual interest and webs and flanges can be specified in a range of depths ranging from 5mm to 30mm. Profiles are fabricated by laser cutting and welding with corner radii of only 0.5mm. Whatever the thickness of the profile, the laser-weld-seams are minimal when compared to conventional seams and the result is a precision-engineered look with sharp, modern lines. VISS steel faades combined with VISS Ixtra profiles offer high levels of thermal insulation and can accommodate doubleand triple-glazed units up to 70mm thick. The extraordinary structural integrity of the system means that it can support very large glass dimensions and weights. Fire-rated versions of VISS faades are also available. www.schueco.com

Broaden Your Horizons . . .

. . . With the Glazing Vision Flushglaze glass rooflight, launched at the turn of the century, the Flushglaze was the first frameless Glass rooflight manufactured in the UK, offering no internal framework and maximum daylight. Since that time the Flushglaze has been used in various shapes and sizes and configurations around the globe on over 10,000 projects. Due to the minimal framework nature of the product the aluminium profile can be bent and shaped to create various configurations, indeed Glazing Vision have produced square, rectangular, circular, triangular, elliptical even barrel shaped versions of the popular rooflight, there is also the option of wall abutting on upto 3 sides with an L shaped aluminium profile and if the client is looking to go larger than the 5.2m2 one pane limit they can decide to either increase the glass spec from our standard, or join the panes together with a silicone seal (span less than 1350mm), back to back angles or glass fins says Jeremy Dunn (Technical Director of Glazing Vision). Its not only size and shape that can be adjusted explains Jon Shooter (Marketing Director), we have been asked to produce bullet proof rooflights for a jewellers, drive over glass as a bespoke variant on our fixed walk on rooflight, we have also introduced a triple glazed Flushglaze with a centre pane U-Value of 0.7 and a Fire Rated Flushglaze with 30 minutes integrity and 30 minutes insultaion. If that isnt bespoke enough we have incorporated Opaque to clear glass, LEDs and PV cells into Flushglazes and made spin off Eaves and Ridge rooflights using the Flushglaze profile, its just so versatile. The ridge rooflight has become so popular that the company has now introduced it as a standard, offering bespoke sizes upto 2m along the ridge, 3m down each return, anything greater can also be accommodated by using back to back angles at the join. Indeed the ridgeglaze was used in the famous Balancing Barn project (the project commissioned by Living Architecture as part of a series of holiday homes around the UK designed by established and emerging world-class architects). The Walk on Flushglaze can be used to get light into a basement or on a roof terrace; it can be installed completely flush with decking or concrete pavers. Glazing Vision also offers an internal walk on Flushglaze to let light shine right through a building. The Flushglaze Walk on rooflight can be produced as one pane upto 3m2 - anything over this can be joined together using back to back angles at the join. The Flushglaze comes with concealed fixings, optional upstand cover and no internal framework (under 5,2m2), walk on (3m2). www.glazing-vision.co.uk

Balcony Systems Curved Patio Door Complements Listed Building

Providing a contemporary contrast between the old and new elements of a Grade 2 listed dwelling is this stunning curved patio door supplied by Balcony Systems. Measuring more than five metres in width, the door allows panoramic views of the garden from a new extension added to a traditional farmhouse near Newark in Nottinghamshire. It was installed by main contractors Gusto Construction for their clients David and Joy Cosslett as part of refurbishment work to their 300-yearold property. This included the construction of a new kitchen/dining room linking the main property with existing outbuildings. Featuring two fixed and two sliding panels, the door when fully open provides a wide direct access to the garden. A grey/blue powder-coated finish was specified by conservation officers to match the lead roof above. For the couples architect, Balconys curved patio door was the ideal solution to meet the design brief. He said: We wanted to create a curve in the building between the old and the new. It just fitted the bill and Im impressed with how well it blends in. It looks great! Creating a seamless curved appearance was a core requirement of the specification, as Gusto Construction Managing Director, Jerome Wright explained: The plans showed a curved radius for the door; however conservation and planning officers did not want a faceted structure as this sectional approach would obstruct the views. Balcony Systems curved patio door provides a modern, yet sympathetic, contrast linking the historic parts of the property with the new. Installation of the door went very well and we were pleased with how easy it was to fit; a testament to its accuracy and tolerances. For homeowner David Cosslett the door creates a striking focal point in the building, while opening up direct access to the outside. It brings in extra light and makes the garden feel part of the kitchen. The door looks fabulous and is a wonderful feature in our home. David added: The conservation officer was very supportive. She wanted something that would enhance the property, but would also allow the new to stand out from the old. Balcony Systems is one of the UKs leading glass balustrading, Juliet balcony and sliding curved patio door specialists. The companys innovative self-clean glass coating that protects the glass and keeps it cleaner for longer is now available across its entire product range. www.balconette.co.uk

Article By: Kee Safety Ltd Title: Safety Is Kee Author: Jeff Rowley, Product Manager

A staggering number of accidents continue to result from slips, trips and falls from height. Against the backdrop of the HSEs Shattered Lives campaign, Jeff Rowley, Product Manager at fall protection specialist, Kee Safety Ltd looks at how the latest innovations in roof protection can help reduce the risk of accidents, whilst not affecting the aesthetics of a building. According to the HSE, falls from height remain one of the most common causes of fatality and major injury in the UK, resulting in around 35 workplace fatalities each year, at an estimated annual cost to the country of 800 million. Figures available for 2010/11 have highlighted that 3956 workers were injured as a result of a fall from height 16% of overall work related major injuries. This is a small improvement on the 2008/09 figures where 4654 major injuries were reported. Its no surprise that the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) continues to highlight the key issues and the steps that can be taken in reducing both the incidents and the cost of injuries through Shattered Lives campaign. As part of this campaign, the HSE now offer a solutions database, a short

cut guidance tool which offers advice on working at height, a special online safety tool (STEP) and a work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT). Of course, under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, as amended by the Work at Height (Amendment) Regulations 2007, there is a legal requirement for anyone who contracts others to access and maintain rooftop equipment on public buildings and social housing developments to ensure proper safety precautions are in place. These Regulations replaced all the earlier regulations about working at height. They consolidated previous legislation and implement European Council Directive 2001/45/EC concerning minimum safety and health requirements for the use of equipment for work at height (the Temporary Work at Height Directive). Breaching these regulations can result in a legal prosecution and either a substantial fine or possible imprisonment. Architects are no doubt aware of the need for roof top safety, but maybe not so conscious of the variety of systems available on the market. The appearance of a building is always of significant concern and this might

lead to a system not being put in place if it means the aesthetics of the property could be compromised. Faced with this issue, manufacturers have developed systems which take this into account. Solutions such as KeeGuard Foldshield and KeeGuard Topfix from Kee Safety provide a great option for architects. Designed as clever and unobtrusive roof safety solutions, folding guardrail systems have been purposely created for corporate and heritage public buildings where aesthetics are a significant concern. With specially hinged bases, collapsible guardrails can be lifted into place when work is in progress, then easily folded back down when not in use. Using a simple locking pin, it makes system use easy and straight forward. This foldable capability ensures it can be used over a greater choice of locations, where a fixed visible solution may be considered unsuitable for specification. As a counterbalance system, it sits on top of the roof surface without the need for any membrane penetration.

Further roof edge protection products have been developed to provide an adaptable guardrail solution for standing seam and metal profile roofs. An off the shelf product, it comprises a base plate, pre-assembled uprights and open cup fittings for quick and easy assembly. The specially designed base plate incorporates multiple fixing centres to allow for installation on a wide range of popular roofs. The base plates for standing seam roofs are fixed using non-penetrative, 2-part clamps while the plates on metal profile roofs are secured with minimal penetrations using rivets and butyl sealing strips to maintain the roof structure. These systems easily accommodate ridges, valleys, corners and other structural difference. With an upright base fitting that allows for 0-11 degree vertical adjustment and four fixing holes in the place, the system can fit into the roof profile as straightforwardly as possible. By installing these systems, the building will comply fully with the requirements of the Working at Height Regulations. These systems also

meet the relevant test requirements, including BS EN 13374 Class A. Specifying these types of systems presents contractors with a quicker, more cost-effective and more practical approach to roof edge protection.

Article By: Aico Ltd Title: All Smoke Alarms Are Not The Same Author: Neil Perdell, National Technical Manager

In the domestic smoke alarm sector there have traditionally been three alarm types: Ionisation, Optical and Heat. Each has its pros and cons in terms of what types of fire it detects, where it can be used and what can possibly cause it to false alarm. As a result, specification and installation requires a good level of knowledge and some intelligent guess work. But what if you could make the process easier? What if one alarm could actually combine the benefits and remove much of the negatives? How many times have you heard the saying that theres no single solution to a problem? And how many times have you hoped that just once that wasnt true? In the fire industry, the idea that one alarm type could be used pretty much anywhere in a property is an ideal that can seem difficult to achieve. Each property requires a risk assessment and decisions have to be made on number of alarms, alarm location, type of alarm, alarm interconnection and whether its by hard wiring or radio frequency, accessories required... and the list goes on.

Let me introduce you to the Multi-Sensor. This alarm combines two traditional sensing elements optical and heat - but has a level of intelligence built in which enables it to not only monitor the signals from both sensors, but also to interpret those signals. Before we go any further though lets recap on the different alarm types, just so you can see how clever the Multi-Sensor really is and why it makes fire alarm specification and installation that much easier. There are three alarm types used in the domestic field: Ionisation, Optical and Heat, the first two of which detect smoke and the latter detects temperature. Ionisation alarms feature a sensor chamber containing a minute and completely safe - radioactive element that ionises the air within and causes a small current to flow. If smoke enters that chamber, the balance of the current is disturbed and the alarm sounds. Ionisation alarms are normally the cheapest type and therefore often chosen as a matter of course over the other alarm types. They certainly work and are less likely to false alarm from dense tobacco smoke, excessive dust and insect ingress, but they are very sensitive to fast flaming fires and sadly to cooking fumes. If you put an Ionisation alarm anywhere near a kitchen, then youre in high risk of false alarms. Optical alarms use a completely different sensing method and actually look for smoke using a pulsed light beam in the sensing chamber. They are most effective at detecting smouldering fires with large particles, such as produced by burning furniture, and are less likely to react to the type of invisible smoke produced by cooking fumes, so are ideal for circulation spaces such as hallways close to kitchens and landings. However, they can react to steam, so should not be located too close to bathrooms. Lastly there is the Heat alarm, which doesnt detect smoke at all, but instead reacts to temperatures of 58C or over. A Heat alarm should only be used in a kitchen or garage and only as part of a fire alarm system that also includes smoke alarms. Furthermore, all of the alarms must be interconnected. The Heat alarm is very straightforward in terms of its location suitability, but the real problem comes when determining where to use Ionisation or Optical. Even a highly experienced risk assessor can get this wrong as he / she may not be aware of all the factors. Maybe the resident is regularly burning food; maybe they are heavy drinkers and smokers; these are not the sort of questions you ask, even if you have the opportunity! A Multi Sensor helps take the guess work out of alarm specification and installation. As mentioned previously, a Multi Sensor uses both Optical and Heat sensors and interprets the signals to get a better understanding of whats really happening in the immediate environment. Due to this, it benefits from a quick response to both slow smouldering and fast flaming fires yet is virtually immune to kitchen fumes and contamination. This makes it the ideal choice for all rooms in a dwelling except a kitchen. Robert Shaw from Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council has witnessed the benefits of the Multi-Sensor first hand in a sheltered accommodation site featuring 41 bungalows with warden call facilities. The bungalows were fitted with a smoke alarm in the hallway and a heat alarm in the kitchen, but problems were being encountered from false alarms. Whilst the heat

In a rented property this is all the more difficult as a risk assessment isnt solely about the property; its also about the people that live in it and in rented accommodation this will change. Smokers, for example, are at greater risk as smoking materials are more likely to be the cause of a fire. The elderly and the young are also higher risk as they are often less able to vacate the property quickly, so need as earlier a warning as possible. And then there are those with disabilities, including the hard of hearing whom may require a specific alarm with a visual strobe light warning. So, no, one fire alarm does not fit all. However, what if you could reduce the number of criteria to take into account when designing a fire alarm system without compromising the integrity of the system and the safety of the residents? In fact, what if you could reduce the number of criteria to take into account and also actually improve the fire alarm system?

detector in the kitchen caused no problems, we found the smoke detector in the hallway kept going off from smoke caused by cooking vapours. This was happening every two months. The Fire Brigade has been really helpful trying to educate the residents about their cooking, but many of them are quite elderly and are used to doing things a certain way. After 18 months of this, we decided enough was enough and we had to do something. We already use Aico fire and CO alarms, so when I received their newsletter containing details of a new Multi-Sensor alarm which reduces false alarms, I got in touch immediately. We did a trial of four of the alarms in the bungalows and we didnt get a single false alarm in four months. The Multi Sensor is also ideal for problem areas that you can immediately see will be more prone to false alarms with a single sensor alarm. Take for example a property such as a flat that has the bathroom and kitchen close to each other. The alarm clearly needs to go in the hallway between these but choose an Ionisation alarm and it may react to cooking fumes, whereas the Optical alarm could cause similar problems from steam from the bathroom. This exact situation was found by Northwards Housing at Manchester City Councils recent development of 32 new purpose built two bedroom

bungalows. One Aico Multi-Sensor has been fitted in the central hallway between the kitchen and bathroom in these new bungalows and false alarms have been avoided altogether. The Multi Sensor is far from a one solution alarm and no one would suggest that. However, where there is doubt about the best alarm type, where you know there could be a potential for false alarms and in rental properties where there are changing tenants, the Multi Sensor reduces the risk and helps make the job of alarm specification and installation that much easier. Aico Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Europes leader in residential fire and gas detection. All alarms are designed and built in Europe - specifically to meet UK standards and regulations.

www.u-ROOF.COM
Article By: U-Roof Ltd Title: Show Some Steel Author: David Thurston, Director

Theres a lot to be said for showing some steel when it comes to domestic roofing projects! Timber solutions will continue to lead the way as the roofing product of choice for new build homes but a growing number of architects, homebuilders and self build enthusiasts are discovering the merits of using steel to create their roofing structures. Theres a host of advantages to utilising steel, not least the time and cost saving implications associated with installation. Feedback from customers shows that the U-Roof system goes up in around 25% of the time taken using timbers despite costing approximately the same and that clearly has implications for the efficiency and timescales of house building developments. For example a 100 square metre roof area can typically be installed insulated and made watertight within one day. Generally speaking steel systems are considerably more lightweight than timber and can be easily flat packed and delivered in one easy load. U-Roof is around 50% of the weight of your like for like traditional timber beam so there are clear health and safety issues at play here too. Steel systems also deliver around 20% more attic space and are perfectly suited for room in the roof projects. It can also be advantageous where planning regulations restrict the overall height of the development. There is also the versatility of being able to take account of complicated roof designs where dormers, multiple pitches, valleys and hips can present a considerable challenge for timber systems. All site fixings are also readily
06 ISSUE 6 2011

visible which enables easy inspection. Like most timber roof suppliers, U-Roof offers a complete start to finish design service that means our structures can be put together, Meccano style, using no specialist tools and requiring no specific skill sets. Time and again we come across customers who have never installed a roof before but suddenly become converts to our system after adhering to our easy-to-follow instructions and drawings as well as 3D modelling in certain circumstances. The strength of steel is another facet to bear in mind and our system, for instance, comes with a 50 year structural warranty backed by accreditation from bodies such as the Steel Construction Institute and the NHBC. Unlike many roof timbers steel does not shrink, warp, twist or rot and therefore subsequent plasterwork maintains its integrity for a lot longer and, of course, steel is non combustible. Environmental performance is playing an ever increasing role in the construction of new homes and steel really can tick all the boxes in this respect. Its 100% recyclable and the manufacturing process, which utilises state-of-the-art machinery, results in almost negligible waste. Whilst timber will continue to lead the way for a long time to come its clear that theres a lot to be said for steel and systems such as U-Roof especially when it comes to complex residential developments and that argument is bearing up in terms of interest from all parts of the housebuilding sector.

Swung House - The Hague A Duet In MDF And OSB Hingham Primary School Are Proud Owners Of Their Honka Log Building From Logwise
Logwise Ltd, the official agents for Honkarakenne Oyj (Honka) in the UK have recently supplied a bespoke log building for Hingham Primary School in Norfolk. Timberville Ltd, who are the Logwise agents in East Anglia, were originally approached by a local village school in Cromer that wanted to replace their tired old mobile unit with a new log cabin to be used as a pre-school building. Logwise were provided with a concept plan for the building which was altered and amended by their Honka trained designer. The new design proved so popular that Norfolk County Council Education Department enquired about 5 such buildings. Hingham Primary School are now the proud owners of their Honka log building for the playgroup. The building itself has been constructed from one of Honkas laminated logs at 112mm wide. There is an additional insulation wall structure with Warmcel recycled newspaper insulation which helps to ensure the building is as sustainable as possible. Construction was carried out by one of the Finnish teams that Logwise operate around the country, under the supervision of the main contractors T Gill & Sons from Norwich. Speed of build was one of the deciding factors for Norfolk Property Services in choosing Logwise to supply the building, and with the log kit being erected in less than a week, their decision was justified. www.logwise.co.uk

FSC-certified Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB set the scene in an office interior geared towards the new way of working in Swung House in The Hague. The carbon-neutral building offers flexible work space solutions for home-based business owners and independent professionals. Interior architect Odette Ex decided to break away from a traditional office design and opted for a stark and striking loft-style interior with a contemporary look. The custom-designed furniture and fittings in Swung House are made from a combination of Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB, creating a unique look. The ColorVlok OSB (oriented strand board) used for the structural construction is treated with a special coating that gives the original natural appearance of the OSB a lovely texture. Drawer fronts and doors are made of smooth and sleek Medite Ecologique with an opaque finish. The homogenous structure of Medite MDF makes it very stable and provides a solid hold for handles, hinges and locks. Swung House is situated in an impressive high-profile location. The multitenant office building offers professional and inspiring flexible work space solutions that can be rented (on demand, by the hour or by the half day) by home-based business owners and independent professionals who want to maintain their networks and client relationships. Odette Ex was involved right from the start in developing a concept for an interior that would enable the new way of working. The custom-designed MDF and OSB furniture and fittings in Swung House include a large reception desk in the lobby, postboxes and a pantry on the ground floor, metres of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on the first floor and low partition walls that separate the workstations on the first and second floors. With an eye for detail, the interior architect devotes meticulous attention to the level of finish of the interior. The edges of the OSB skeleton of the custom-designed cabinets with doors are finished with a strip of matching

film, but the edges of the open cabinets with shelves are not finished. This approach enabled us to ensure that the project stayed within budget without having to compromise on quality. As Jean-Marc Verhoeven explains, sustainability was the guiding principle in the implementation of the project: We are delighted that the Swung House concept won the Telework Aspect Award and was awarded 5 stars in the Good & Green Guide The Hague. Odette Ex prefers to choose sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Spatiality and harmony are essential elements in my designs, while the details determine the coherence of the overall look. The two panel products used to construct the custom-designed furniture and fittings are both made by Coillte Panel Products using wood obtained from sustainably managed and FSC-certified forests owned by Coillte. Both types of panels come with an FSC certificate and are made with zero added formaldehyde. Odette Ex says the new thinking on sustainability definitely influenced the process of developing a concept for the new way of working, and Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB are very much part of this picture. www.coillte.ie

Portakabin Delivers Highly Innovative And Sustainable Modular Solution At Hull Royal Infirmary
A new modular building at Hull Royal Infirmary providing state-of-the-art hospital facilities for up to 90,000 patients each year has been delivered by Portakabin using a highly innovative and sustainable construction solution to the benefit of patient care. Portakabin was appointed design and build contractor by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to construct a 3,000sqm permanent outpatients and training facility as part of a 7m investment. This complex three-storey building was manufactured, fitted out and handed over after just seven months on site despite exceptional winter working conditions to help the Trust meet increased demand for its services. The project required a highly flexible and innovative approach to its construction, combining 50 specially manufactured steel-framed modules with 50 units from another modular building on the hospital site that had become surplus to requirements. Portakabin recycled and fully refurbished the structure of a twostorey ward block which included stripping out each module and installing new windows, upgrading the floor structure and re-lining internal walls. This approach to recycling and re-using an existing modular structure for a completely new, purpose-designed facility made the project highly sustainable and cost effective and demonstrates the flexibility of modular construction when a building is no longer required. The Portakabin solution also reduced the programme time which in turn minimised disruption to patient services a key issue for the Trust because of the close proximity of the new facility to the main hospital. Commenting on the project, Duncan Taylor, Head of Estates at the Trust, said, Speed was the principal reason for using modular construction for this project, which enabled us to reduce the programme time by around six months. The Portakabin solution also allowed us to re-use the structure of an existing modular ward building, minimising both cost and waste sent to landfill. The result is a really excellent scheme with facilities we are very proud of. Feedback from staff and patients has been extremely positive since the building opened. Robert Snook, General Manager of Portakabin Sales, said, This building was the most complex design and build project that we have ever undertaken in terms of logistics, design and timescale. It demonstrates our ability to deliver projects of this scale from initial concept and planning to ground works, offsite manufacture, M&E design and installation, and final commissioning to a challenging programme, on a very constrained hospital site, and our flexible approach to meeting a clients project-specific requirements. The 200-room facility accommodates the ophthalmology department on the ground floor with dermatology services on the first floor, allowing the Trust to consolidate services on one site as well as to increase capacity. On the upper floor, a new Clinical Skills Centre provides high quality education and training facilities for doctors, with facilities including a simulated ward, critical care unit and theatre suite. Some areas, such as operating theatres, feature the Portakabin high performance pre-installed concrete floor system which is designed to accommodate highly sensitive medical equipment. In addition to its partially recycled structure, the scheme has a number of sustainable elements, including a central atrium which runs the full length of the building, maximising natural light and ventilation and reducing the reliance on artificial lighting whilst creating a high quality patient environment; solar shading, a partial heat recovery ventilation system; movement and daylight sensors to control high frequency lighting; and air source heat and cooling pumps for the first floor. The building is also controlled by a building management system. The striking, contemporary exterior aesthetics for the building comprise stonecoloured horizontal aluminium cladding panels to the ground and first floors, with vertical blue multi-panels providing a contrast at high level. The end faade of the stair tower features square-cut stone blocks with recessed detailing to complement adjacent buildings on the hospital site. Full height curtain walling encloses the stair core, creating a light and welcoming reception at each floor level. The building was designed in line with NHS guidelines, including Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health Building Notes (HBNs). www.portanews.co.uk

Cold Climate Enjoys Warm Daylighting

Many daylighting projects, using Kalwall with LumiraTM aerogel insulation (previously called Nanogel), are increasingly being specified by public and private sector architects in colder regions, such as Scotland and beyond. Recent Kalwall + Lumira aerogel projects in Scotland, supplied and fixed by SD Systems, include a sports hall at Aberdeen Grammar School, the Rainbow nursery for childcare, a student dining-room extension at Turriff Academy (pictured) and refurbishment of the swimming-pool at Andrew Carnegie leisure centre. Lumira aerogel dramatically increases thermal insulation with U values as low as 0.28W/m2K. Used within the Kalwall translucent cladding and rooflighting system, it means that architects and designers can now create large areas of daylighting in walls and roofs, which can be as energy efficient as an insulated solid wall. The natural light diffusing performance and elimination of stark contrasts of glare and shadow creates a soft, evenly diffused museum-quality light which creates a high comfort level while reducing the running costs of airconditioning, heating and artificial lighting. www.stoakes.co.uk

Renolits Single Ply Solar Membrane Is Rated The Most Reflective In The World
Renolits Alkorbright single ply membrane has been independently tested in Italy and the USA, returning the highest reflectivity ratings. High reflectivity means a cooler rooftop, assisting the efficiency of crystalline silicon cell based solar panels. Reflected rays also can significantly influence the performance of CIGS based panels by reflecting rays back from the roof surface to the panel. The Alkorbright single ply membrane is a through colour white composition with a lacquered surface that prevents the build up of contaminants and ensures easy maintenance. Initially the membranes reflectivity was measured by the Groups own testing laboratories where technicians arrived at a rating of 90%. The company was acutely aware that potential customers would require an independent rating and turned to the University of Modena in northern Italy to conduct the research. The Universitys technicians actually returned a higher reading than the Renolit team - in excess of 91% and almost 92% total reflectivity. In the USA, where the Government offers significant financial incentives for cool roof installations, the independent CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) has only recently conducted very similar tests and lists the Alkorbright membrane as returning the worlds highest solar reflection at 91%. Solar panel manufacturers utilise a variety of different technologies, one of which is copper indium gallium selenide based - CIGS for short. CIGS based panels are only affected by certain parts of solar radiations striking the panel. The performance of these panels is also greatly influenced by the same portion of the solar spectrum being reflected back from the roof surface to the panel. In order to arrive at a CIGS reflectivity rating, it is only the same specific portion of the solar spectrum that is analysed. Once again the Renolit Alkorbright membrane returns a 97% CIGS rating! In most industrial and commercial applications - and supermarkets are a good example - the panels are likely to be installed on new or maybe existing flat roofs. When these surfaces are waterproofed using the Alkorbright single ply membrane as opposed to a regular grey membrane, the increased return

Hard Water Harms Heat Pumps Harvey Softener The Cure

Heat Pump Installations (HPI) designed and installed an air sourced water heating system in a property in Windsor, an area notorious for hard water. Unfortunately after only four months the householder concerned complained that his water was no longer hot and that there appeared to be no circulation in the system whatsoever. MCS, knowing that the heat pumps were completely reliable, immediately checked the whole system and discovered the villain of the piece, limescale that had completely blocked the inlet pipe leading from the heat pump to the hot water cylinder. When examining the cause HPI disconnected the super-insulated stainless steel hot water storage cylinder that had been installed as part of the heating system and in it found to their amazement an opaque semi-liquid with the appearance and consistency of thin porridge. Apparently stainless steel, unlike copper, resists the cling of limescale to its surface leaving the calcium carbonate to form into a sludge only too ready to coat pipes with a concentrated deposit in very short order. Fortunately, once the sludge had been removed from the tank, a permanent remedy was a simple matter since HPI has an excellent relationship with Harvey Softeners. A Harvey water softener was installed on the mains supply to the dwelling preventing any limescale build-up and will also in time remove any deposits that are already in the system. www.harvey.co.uk

THE BOOK/ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

THE BOOK/ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

We cannot control the weather and the effects of wind on interior pressure, or the effect of cold snaps on potentially increased condensation, but we can control the materials and methods that we choose to enhance building quality and sustainability. An airtight house requires both a well-managed, integrated construction process from start to finish and a proper understanding of interior ventilation and maintenance issues beyond. The seal must be complete and must be kept intact fenestration, penetrations, laps and gaps of all kinds must be taken into account but the installation system from membranes to tapes and sealants, is simple once understood, while guides, training and renowned customer support are all readily available from reputable manufacturers such as DuPont. Moving forward in the right direction means that all trades from installers to plumbers and electricians must take ownership of the air barrier and requires trust in our workmanship and its ability to adapt, evolve and advance. Its time for the industry to pull together behind one holistic and optimal house-building vision. The optimising combination of durable, reliable, high-performance membranes offers a sensibly holistic solution, that if properly understood and installed, addresses not only temporary condensation issues but also significantly enhances the overall thermal performance, integrity and interior comfort of the structure. This, in the long run, adds value and brings the kind of benefits that almost every section of society is aiming for in the current climate. Airtight construction is a sensible way forward to sustainable housing Be one step ahead: achieve 2013 sustainability codes now by installing DuPont AirGuard AVCLs and DuPont Tyvek breather membranes, which already meet these goals The UK construction industry must advance toward modern methods and materials Education is key, in workmanship, management, planning and end-user activity An AVCL, properly installed, together with proven air and water-tight, yet vapour-open roofing underlays offers the optimal, holistic membrane solution Thermal performance, energy-efficiency, moisture control, structural integrity and interior comfort are all improved by adopting this futureproof, easy to install solution

Case Study: How DuPontTM AirGuard Reflective achieves an airtight seal of approval at a Housing Association project in York DuPont AirGuard Reflective was installed to effectively line the inside of the structure in a continuous layer. It is a metallised air & vapour control layer (AVCL) that is impermeable to both air and moisture while offering very low emissivity, thereby also playing a key role in preventing heat loss and reflecting up to 95% of internal radiant heat in the winter. Pressure tests on the completed plots have shown excellent results: Plot 1 (end terrace) - Air permeability 1.58 m3/h.m2, Air leakage 1.51 h-1 Plot 2 (mid terrace) - Air permeability 1.94 m3/h.m2, Air leakage 1.86 h-1 Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a reasonable limit for the Design Air Permeability of 10m3/h.m2 at 50 Pa. - and these figures are considerably below that maximum prescribed limit. The key to successful air tightness, therefore, is the quality of both the membrane and the tapes, together with the workmanship during installation. Airtight Construction: The Way Forward

A combination of high-performance, air and water tight membranes, such as DuPont Tyvek and DuPont AirGuard offers a holistic solution to energy-efficiency, moisture control and long term protection of the building envelope. Mark Hill, Sales Manager, UK & Ireland, DuPont Building Innovations, discusses the key issues. Every forward-thinking voice in construction today not to mention current and incoming regulation is talking about optimal airtightness as one of the key solutions for achieving meaningful sustainability and for future-proofing the performance of housing. Traditionally UK construction has often been leaky in this department to say the least and even now there remains a certain resistance in some quarters to embracing both the materials and the methods essential to combating the problem. So why is airtightness so important and how can the industry advance into adopting the right approach? From achieving greater thermal efficiency to improved moisture control and the peace of mind that the proper protective seal can bring, its crucial to employ a combination of proven, hi-tech membranes together with modern methods of installation, workmanship and even end-user education. Especially if uK industry wants to get ahead of 2013 codes demanding 44% improvements in energy/carbon performance (and zero carbon emissions for housing by 2016) to take its proper place at the forefront of quality, ethical, contemporary construction. Regardless of the type of roof construction, the correct installation of an air and vapour control layer as part of the dry-lining of the interior envelope will bring considerable benefits for both the prevention of thermal losses through convection and if the layer is metallised such as DuPont AirGuard Reflective also through radiant emissivity. The thermal properties of a reflective membrane are further enhanced by installing with battens to then create a cavity that both increases warm air volume and protects the membrane while also offering a useful service void. The installation of an AVCL becomes especially vital, however, if the house has a cold-pitched roof construction. The considerable increase in the use of insulation in house-building has brought greater energy savings, but also means that extra moisture can be built up and then pushed up into the roof space, particularly during any temporary drying out phase or during particularly harsh cold spells. An AVCL properly installed in the ceiling will prevent any moisture from occupier activity from rising into the roof, while the correct air and watertight, but crucially, vapour-open breather membranes installed in the roof and behind exterior walls will allow any pre-existing vapour to escape. The use of a breather membrane with proven reliability and accreditation such as DuPont Tyvek will protect the envelope without sacrificing the air-tight seal, or the ingress of water, dust, insects and cold air through unnecessary roof vents or untested air-open membranes.

Solarpack Package Powers Saddlery Showroom

When Barrie and Lynda Mortlock set up in business as B&J Saddlery in 1974 they could hardly have foreseen the success story that was to follow. Now trading as the Ingatestone Saddlery Centre, they were awarded the title of Mail Order Retailer for 2009 and were runner-up for the Large Retailer title for the same year and their business in supplying all types of horse related supplies continues to thrive. With the success has come expansion of premises and the company had moved twice already before settling ten years ago at Margaretting, still in the Ingatestone area, on a large site with excellent access and parking for over 200 cars. The latest enlargement has been the rebuilding of an indoor riding school that now serves as an airy modern Showroom. With an eye to the future, the Mortlocks decided to minimise electricity bills for their new showroom by the use of renewable energy and called on GB Solar for the best system for this large structure built in profiled steel. GB Solar in turn asked Solarpack [UK] Ltd., a company that specialises in putting together solar power packages using the finest components from leading manufacturers, to design a system and supply its components. Solarpacks proposal underlines the international nature of their business, for the three major components of the final system come from Portugal, Germany and China respectively. The Portuguese input is the 128 Photovoltaic Modules [each containing 60 cells of monocrystalline silicone] to a superefficient design offering an output of 31.36 kWp. Fixing for the panels comes from the German manufacturer Contecta, whose Diconal P40-EV1 Mounting System is a premium product in anodised aluminium for lightness and longevity of service to justify the Fix once fixed forever solution. The package was completed with two SL15KTLA1 Grid Tied Inverters from Samil Power, one of the leading solar specialists in the Peoples Republic of China. These remarkable, S59 certification products are compact, well presented in stainless steel frames, offering over 98% maximum efficiency and give reliable protection against overvoltage, overload, overheating and short circuit. The total package from Solarpack was chosen to offer not only optimum energy generation but also total reliability and a long and trouble free life. It also proved extremely simple to install as EES Ltd, sub-contracting to GB Solar, will bear witness. EES were also impressed with the flexibility shown by Solarpack when they were asked, soon after installation had started, if the design could be changed from four rows of 32 photovoltaic panels to 8 rows of 16 panels. An email to Germany resulted in the amended Conteca fixings being couriered to Essex just 36 hours later. It is too early to have accurate running costs of the newly installed Solarpack system but preliminary reactions from the Ingatestone Saddlery Centre are that they have been harnessed to a highly effective solar power package. www.solarpack-uk.com

Timoleon Takes Care Of New Farms Heating

Northcombe Farm situated in deepest Devon has an absolutely brand new farmhouse. The building consists of a 182 sq. metre two-storey two bedroom dwelling including an office. Designed in pleasing but thoroughly modern style by architects the Louis Hawkins Practice, the new farmhouse has been built using the latest energy conserving insulation techniques including triple glazing and although heating is initially by an oil-fired boiler, the system has been designed for ready conversion to ground- or air-sourced heat when and if required. Underfloor central heating was specified throughout and Timoleon Ltd., Exeter based and so ideally situated for the Northcombe Farm project, was called upon for the design, manufacture and supply of all the necessary components for the system. Timoleons holistic approach to home heating was much in keeping with the architects aim of creating a total energy effective package for the new home and office combination. It was decided that for optimum energy return for input, different under-floor systems should be used on the solid concrete floors downstairs and the chipboard base employed on the first floor. For the office and the ground floor of the house Timoleons ClipPlate system proved ideal, being very easy and quick to lay. The 15mm flexible polybutylene heating pipe slotted securely into the castellated pattern in the ClipPlates that had already been simply interlocked onto the concrete sub-floor. A 10mm EPS insulation layer in each ClipPlate adds greatly to the systems efficiency. The pipes were pressure tested at that stage and remained under pressure when the top screed was applied. Upstairs the Toron Flooring System was applied, designed specifically for suspended floor constructions. The Toron Chipboard Panels, with channels on the upper side to take the PB pipe, were laid directly on the joists and continuous pipe [in this case 10mm] was then literally walked into the preset design. The ends of each circuit droppng into the joist space for connection to a common flow and return. Once complete, an aluminium strip was placed directly onto the heating pipe, spreading the heat and also providing a method of detecting the pipe if any future work on the floor was necessary. The owner who installed the heating system at Northcombe Farm worked closely with Timoleon throughout and praised the standard of product used, the ease of installation and the workmanlike and sympathetic attitude of the Timoleon staff employed on the project. The under-floor systems installed will be ideal for use with alternative energy sources, so that may give a bonus for the future to add to an energy-efficient present. www.timoleon.co.uk

Economaire Warm Air Takes Residence In Bungalow Refurbishment

Johnson & Starley reports an up-surge of interest in warm air heating systems from the private residential market. When Mr Glicks large bungalow in Chigwell was effectively rebuilt and extended, the existing traditional gas boiler and radiator heating system was replaced with Johnson & Starleys Economaire 65 warm air system. The main warm air duct from the unit starts in the bungalows cellar area and reaches across the centre of the living space through a channel in the concrete floor. Smaller spur ducts feed the bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, hallway and utility room. Warm air enters each room through strategically situated floor registers in the floor that have vanes to direct the airflow. Balancing the register with critical management of flue gases and heat exchanger temperatures was easily achieved thanks to the ET control system that is incorporated as standard into the Economaire. www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk

New Meets Old Modular Wiring Systems Used At Kings Cross Station
Modular Wiring Systems, a subsidiary of electrical cable manufacturer Tratos Ltd., has designed, manufactured and supplied modular power and lighting distribution systems for Kings Cross Station in London, a Grade I listed building. Modular Wiring Systems has designed the distribution systems to run mainly underfloor through key parts of the Western Range. Such restrictions require exceptional system flexibility, which was found in Modular Wiring Systems products and design process. Logistics was also an important factor in this prestigious installation due to limited on site storage, requiring just in time delivery which Modular Wiring Systems was readily able to accommodate. This is made possible by the offsite pre fabrication of the system, including pre wired distribution boards, which can then be stored and delivered to site at the exact time and date specified by the client. www.modularwiring.com

Renting Can Be Cost Effective

Mandatory testing procedures proliferate especially when safety is concerned and the instruments that make them possible are becoming increasingly expensive and technically involved. For a small or mediumsized business [or even for a large company if an infrequently used process is involved] the cost of purchasing such equipment and training staff to operate it often becomes prohibitive. As Alan Gilbert of BSRIA Instrument Solutions explains, the option of hiring from experts who fully understand the testing equipment and are used to its calibration and operation is frequently preferable, not only preventing heavy outlay in machinery that is only occasionally used, but also saving staff time in producing speedy, accurate results. One example would be the availability of a sound level meter, necessary for several testing functions in the manufacturing and construction industries. Alan Gilbert explains A middle-of-the-range Class 1 meter with octave bands costs upwards of 3,000 and it may only be needed very occasionally. From a company such as BSRIA Instrument Solutions it will cost you around 150 to hire this instrument for a week, ample time for the necessary testing procedures. On top of that you know that it will be set up by professionals ready for use on delivery, that calibration certification is readily available and that the instrument has been properly maintained and not produced from the back of a cupboard having been last used a year ago. Hiring gives peace of mind as well as saving capital outlay. www.bis.fm

NIBE Exhaust Air Heating For Swindons Zero Carbon Homes

Swindon Borough Council recently completed the building of 13 zero carbon houses, bringing to only 132 the national total for these super eco-homes. Designed by architect Nigel Grainge of HEARTHuk a part of the NPS and conforming to the stringent requirements of Level 5 in the Code for Sustainable Homes, the new development at Malmesbury Gardens consists of two, three, four and five-bedroomed houses to a pleasantly traditional design that conceals the amount of new technology that has gone into the remarkable energy conserving and generating qualities they contain. Allied to the very latest insulation techniques including innovative hemcrete external walls, the homes have photovoltaic panels for generating electricity and solar panels to partly provide the hot water that is stored at the comparatively low temperature ideal for under-floor heating. The energy conserving features and particularly the ultimate reduction of emissions to achieve zero carbon status, are completed by the inclusion of an exhaust air recycling process designed by NIBE Energy Systems and powered by a NIBE F410 Heat Pump. The theory behind NIBE exhaust air heating is remarkably simple. The air, carbon rich and fully heated by the ufch plus background warmth from human and other sources, is harvested at roof level before it reaches the vented void ventilation system in the houses roof. This heat is passed down to the NIBE F410 unit where a sophisticated and super-efficient heat exchange process squeezes every last vestige of energy from the exhaust air and raising its temperature by compression before feeding it back to boost the hot water system. The final emissions into the outside atmosphere are at a temperature very close to freezing and therefore virtually free of CO2 and other harmful gases. Early reactions from the residents of Malmesbury Gardens to their new homes are very positive. As an example Nikolai Stone and his partner Helen, who have moved from a one bedroomed flat, report that their monthly electricity bill has shrunk from 50 down to 30 despite the fact that they have now have efficient under-floor heating and a very much larger home. The fact that the bills are so low will help a lot of tenants said Nikolai But its also great that we are living in a house that is so environmentally friendly. The zero carbon rating is also very much to the liking of Swindon Council, who benefited from a major grant from the HCA and of the Government itself who provide such funding to aid local authorities in achieving the major carbon savings that are necessary if the UK is to achieve its stated emission targets. www.nibe.co.uk

Kingspan Insulated Panels Bring Energy Efficiency To Morrisons Distribution

Morrisons South West Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Somerset, is raising the bar for energy conservation, with an exemplar scheme that uses innovative solar PV and insulated panel technology from Kingspan Insulated Panels. One of the challenges was to transform unproductive roof space into the facilitys own power plant. At the Goods in Warehouse, FK Construction installed the Roof PowerPanel Laminate System using Topdek KS1000 TD, a single ply insulated membrane roofdeck which had the PV laminate adhered directly to the surface on site. Using 1,548 modules, this system will provide a single-source, insulated, roof and solar PV power source delivering a total peak output of over 220 kWp and an estimated 197,279 kWhrs of energy per annum. Externally, the Frozen Warehouse has a highly insulated building envelope comprising: Kingspan KS1000 MR Micro-Rib architectural wall panels, and KS1000 RW insulated roof panels, which provide a support structure for the 1,194 Kingspan Roof PowerPanel crystalline PV modules mounted onto the south facing elevations to convert the suns energy into electricity for refrigeration. With the addition of Kingspan Multideck MD60 high performance galvanised steel deck for the composite floor slabs; Multibeam purlins and side rails and other finishing touches such as gutters, top-hats, flashings and Safetraxx, an off-ridge fall protection system, Morrisons RDC represents a huge vote of confidence for the investment Kingspan makes in developing innovative solutions. This project had the innovative use of tied portal frames where the ties were Multichannels This was specified by the engineer to deliver a frame system that incorporated a lower steel content by taking advantage of the high strength of the Multichannels. www.kingspanpanels.com

Arch Timber Protection Balances Protection And Sustainability At Netherlands Institute For Ecology
The Netherlands Institute for Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) is now housed in a purpose-built timber and glass building designed to the highest standards of sustainability, and fire retardants from Arch Timber Protection, a Lonza company, are safely protecting the building and staff at the site. Timber is a crucial and significant element in the new building and thermally-modified Plato WOOD, produced from sustainable spruce, has been used for external beams and cladding. These components are protected using Archs NON-COM Exterior, a polymer-based fire retardant to provide a proven and highly effective surface spread of flame protection. Interior Plato WOOD spruce timbers used in the public areas of the building are also fire retardant-protected with Archs DRICON, a water-based fire retardant treatment. The timber and the DRICON treatment have been supplied by Foreco Dalfsen. The timbers for NON-COM Exterior protection had to be accurately produced and then carefully shipped in segments to the UK, treated by Arch and then shipped back to the site for construction. www.archtp.com

NIBE Air Source & Solar Heat For Newton Hall

Newton Hall is a magnificent early Georgian mansion standing in nearly 200 acres of parkland and woodland. It was bought by Paul Hindaugh, Managing Director of Hindhaugh Homes, with a view to restoring it to its former glory as a Country House for his family. Unfortunately, since the Hall is a Listed property, replacing the original single glazed sash windows was not an option and the opportunities for insulation were limited, so one of Pauls first priorities was to find an efficient heating system that would not be ruinously expensive to run. He calculated that, even with the latest technology, oil or LPG fired systems would cost over 2,000 a month to maintain at the even 21 degrees temperature he desired, so he handed the problem over to HT Energy Ltd of Northallerton. HTs Howard Tribick immediately opted for an under-floor system to give evenly spread warmth throughout the large area required no hot spots, no cold corners. The next question was the optimum renewable heat source. Their first thought was of a ground sourced system but that was discarded due to the horrendous disruption that would be caused to Newton Halls beautifully kept formal gardens by drilling the ten boreholes required. Instead HT designed an air sourced system powered by four NIBE F2015 Air/water heat pumps running in a cascade system which heated water and stored it in a super-insulated NIBE VPB 500 litres capacity cylinder supplying hot water for the several bathrooms and washrooms plus the kitchens. The VPB500 was backed by another 500litre tank used entirely to source the under-floor heating throughout the house and maintain a steady 21 degrees regardless of other hot water demand. One of the advantages of NIBEs heat pumps is that they are specifically designed to work in parallel with solar power and it was decided to install three NIBE Solar FP215 P/PL panels on the slate roof of the Hall, sited on the South side of an interior courtyard and therefore invisible from ground level. These were fed via a pump sited in the plantroom and a potable heat exchanger directly into the VPB cylinder and therefore required no separate control. A solar controller with a memory card to store historical data was, however, installed and the results when the whole system was working were remarkable. During April and May this year the three panels generated around 1,000 kwh to the hot water raising the water temperature to 65 degrees during the day. Since the air sourced heat pumps automatically cut out at this temperature, the savings in energy and therefore fuel costs were slashed! Although it is early days to judge the total fuel bill for the water heating and central heating of Newton Hall, present indications are for a monthly cost not exceeding 300, quite a reduction from the 2,000 previously estimated. The four NIBE F2015 Air/water heat pumps are controlled by an SMO10 and each room is linked in to the central system via its own thermostat. The Hall has open fires in most of the rooms, but these are for comforts sake, rather than a direct heat source and the effects of this variable heat are evened out by the rooms thermostats. The Hindhaugh family has been delighted with the working of the heating system in their beautiful new home, none more than Paul himself. www.nibe.co.uk

Sapphires Expertise For Architecturally Sensitive Shopping Mall

DLG Architects of London specified Sapphire Balustrades to supply and fit balustrades in Baths shopping mall. The project involved building a covered shopping mall to incorporate existing buildings in the centre of Bath, one of the most architecturally sensitive cities in the UK, so it was important to find suppliers who could meet the exact requirements of the designer. The project, Milsom Place in Bath, used Sapphires Crystal Balustrade with a variety of handrails to suit each installation some timber, some stainless steel and some with integral LED lighting. Some of Sapphires competitors refused to even quote for the job, as the technical specifications were too demanding. But Sapphire relishes a challenge, and supplied 150 metres of balustrade. Each installation met the specification and successfully combined modern innovation with historical character. www.sapphirebalustrades.com

Vertical Daylighting
Kalwall translucent systems do not always need to have standard, rectangular grids. Providing the area is large enough, variations of size, shape and layout are possible. A recent example is installed at the JCB Academy near Uttoxeter where a new sports hall is lit with Verti-Kal featuring a brickbond vertical variation of the diffused daylighting system. This can also be used horizontally. The JCB Academy is the first of a brand new type of school, focused on delivering high quality engineering and business education. Kalwall is the unique system of diffusing natural daylight through walls or roofs. The museum-quality natural light is ideal for sports halls because it eliminates stark contrasts of light and shadow and creates ideal playing surface. Importantly, because the system is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. www.stoakes.co.uk

A 55 million student accommodation development in Nottingham is using integrated smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems from SE Controls to provide smoke free escape routes for around 1000 students living in the new purpose designed apartments at Chettles Yard. To meet the fire safety and smoke ventilation needs in three of the new buildings at the Chettles Yard development, SE Controls developed specific smoke and heat ventilation solutions for each accommodation block based around its versatile SHEVTEC system. As the maximum escape travel distance in two of the apartment buildings was within the 7.5 metre limit covered by Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, the SHEVTEC Natural Corridor Ventilation System was installed. However, the six storey F Building had a travel distance of 12.0 metres so SE Controls created a dedicated fire engineered solution around its LABC approved SHEVTEC Extended Travel Distance System. In the event of a fire, the main exit route is through a singe protected stairwell, so the SE Controls solution had to provide high integrity smoke and heat ventilation that not only allowed occupants to travel the increased distance to safety, but must also perform at least as well as the code compliant systems installed in the other two accommodation blocks. The extended travel system used in Building F was originally developed by SE Controls using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to create an off the shelf, fully compliant and CE marked solution that can not only assist escape but also simplify the buildings design by removing the need for additional escape stairs. In addition, the size of the smoke shafts used can be reduced to less than half of the 1.5m2 required under a typical natural ventilation system. When combined with the requirement for only one escape stair, this allowed the developers to incorporate more apartments within the buildings envelope.

The SHEVTEC system uses a dual smoke shaft and fan ventilated solution linked by smoke sensors through SE Controls powerful OSLoop control system, which when triggered determines which shaft is closest to the fire and automatically opens the smoke shaft doors on each floor to extract smoke away from escape routes, corridors and stairs. Once actuated, OSLoop continues to monitor the entire system throughout the incident to ensure the system maintains its performance in accordance with the imminent EN12101 part 9 standard. SE Controls provided a full turnkey solution to the Chettles Yard development, involving project management, the supply and installation of the SHEVTEC system and liaison with all the appropriated authorities and inspectors, as well as full testing and rigorous commissioning procedures to verify the systems performance, operation and compliance with the design brief. A fully detailed PDF case study covering the specific fire engineered smoke ventilation solution installed by SE Controls is available for download from the companys website at www.secontrols.com

Gilgen Provides Bespoke Sliding Doors For Checkpoint Security At Manchester Airport Howe Greens HG100 Channel Drain Keeps The Beer Flowing From Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills Brewery is an independent brewer with an award-winning portfolio of beer and real ale. The company recently relocated to the prestigious Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking where over 20 metres of Howe Greens HG100 linear channel drain was installed when existing estate buildings were refurbished and a new extension built on the site of the UKs largest single estate vineyard. Biwater, the international water and wastewater specialist, managed the project and was responsible for overseeing essential drainage works. They specified the Howe Green HG100 channel drain in a custom-designed fermentation area to collect water from the many cleaning operations that happen throughout the production process. All brewing processes involve water in some way, explains Ross Hunter, Surrey Hills Director Most of the work is cleaning the equipment between each brew, which produces waste water. Reliable drainage was an essential requirement for our new premises and the Howe Green product is doing a good job and performing very well for us. Made from stainless steel with a heavy duty anti slip ladder grating, Howe Greens HG100 Channel Drain was installed at the new Surrey Hills plant with a 9mm sloping polyurethane screed floor with non-slip chips added for additional safety. The HG100 is suitable for a wide range of applications including changing rooms, shower areas, spas, kitchens, laboratories, veterinary surgeries and other areas that demand durable and effective drainage. A fully modular system, the HG100 range is available in 304-grade or 316-grade stainless steel with both sloping and level channels. With a selection of 90 bends, T-junctions, stop ends and outlets, plus a selection of application-specific gratings, it represents a complete linear drain channel solution. Gilgen Door Systems, has developed and installed bespoke sliding doors for new checkpoint security lanes at Manchester Airport. Gilgen installed the unique sliding doors that form part of new security gate systems. A total of ten gates have been installed five in terminal 1, three in terminal 2 and 2 in terminal 3 and form part of departure security systems that allow passengers to pass from landside to airside. The new security checkpoints direct passengers through a turnstile and a magnetic body scanner leading to a glass pod, when a passenger passes the security check, one of the Gilgen sliding doors opens allowing the passenger to continue through to reclaim belongings scanned by baggage scanners. If they do not pass the security check the adjacent sliding door opens directing the passenger through to an area where further security checks are undertaken. Each gate required two sets of two single sliding automatic doors. Each door set is mounted on a single header operating system, but operate independently ensuring only the correct lane is opened enabling the closed door to form a screen to prevent passengers from walking through the wrong lane. The doors operate in conjunction with security gate system and provide an orderly and controlled security checkpoint that optimises passenger throughput and security personnel resources. The system is also able to perform random security checks as required. The bespoke SLX sliding door systems use intelligent Communication Bus (CAMBus) technology unique to Gilgen to enable remote interfacing with the security gate system. This system also ensures safe, reliable operation of the doors, exceeding current industry legislation. Gilgen Door Systems has over 80 years international experience in the design, manufacture and installation of a leading range of commercial and industrial door systems. With regional centres across the UK, Gilgen also offers a nationwide repair and maintenance service.
