Wiconas Highly Sustainable Test Centre Generates 60 Per Cent More Electricity Than It Needs For Its Own Operations
In its first year of operation, the new dedicated test centre for Wiconas faade products one of the first energy-positive industrial buildings in Europe has generated 60 per cent more electricity than it needs for its own consumption. Located at Bellenberg near the Wicona Brand Development Centre at Ulm in Germany, the f3.5m scheme provides in-house testing facilities for new products and project-specific faade solutions which can then be independently certified to the latest European standards. The test centre is designed to be highly energy efficient and sustainable. Roofmounted photovoltaic panels generate sufficient power for heating, lighting and operating the entire building, making it one of Europes first energypositive production buildings. Daily energy monitoring has shown that the building has generated enough energy to be self-sufficient and to deliver a significant level of electricity into the national grid. You can now track the energy performance of the test centre and monitor its power generation and consumption levels see www.zeb-bellenberg.com. A key factor in helping to reduce the energy consumption of the building to as little as 23kWh/m2a around the same as a standard passive house is its highly efficient Wicona faade. This is integrated with the building services and low energy technology, and is also highly glazed to allow most of the product testing to be carried out without the need for artificial lighting. Other energy-efficient features of the new test centre include the use of heat pumps and a closed water circuit to minimise water consumption for the large volumes required for faade tests. The in-house testing procedures and equipment for the building were developed by Wicona in conjunction with IFT Rosenheim (Institute of Window Technology), an independent accreditor. Facilities include: Two faade test rigs allowing samples up to 10m by 10m to be rigorously tested under a full range of weather performance and safety conditions air permeability, static and dynamic water pressure, wind and impact resistance A testing rig for combinations of windows, doors and fixed light glazing with frame sizes of up to 3.6m by 2.9m, assessing air permeability, water tightness, and wind and impact resistance A fitting rig to carry out performance tests on doors and windows up to 4m high, and their fittings and accessories. www.wicona.co.uk

Title: New Purpose-Built Haemodialysis Unit At Plymouth Hospital Constructed Off Site, Exceeds Part L 2010 By 90 Per Cent Location: Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust Application: New Purpose-Built Satellite Haemodialysis Unit Visit: www.yorkon.info
previous dialysis facility in the hospital will now be reconfigured for use by the ophthalmology department. The 954sqm single-storey building was constructed to a challenging programme and comprises 27 steel-framed modules which were craned into position in just four days. Commenting on the project, Syd Jamieson, Project Manager at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said, This new unit provides a much improved facility out in the local community. The Yorkon approach gave us the speed of construction we needed to meet our priorities for facility improvement. It was delivered on time and on budget, and we are very happy with the finished building. It has freed up space within the hospital for use by another department and has created a welcoming, high quality environment for our dialysis patients. We would definitely recommend the Yorkon approach and consider using it again. Designed by Yorkon, the centre features cedar wood cladding to the main entrance elevation, a blue fascia with co-ordinating blue doors and windows, and white render to the other faades. Facilities include an open plan area with 29 dialysis stations and four private cubicles, dirty and clean utilities, reception area, seminar room, kitchen, staff room/showers, IT room, consultation rooms and administrative offices. Yorkon has a strong track record in the healthcare sector, which includes more than 50 projects for around 50 NHS trusts and private sector health providers. The Plymouth scheme follows the successful completion of a renal unit at Arbroath Infirmary for NHS Tayside in Scotland where Yorkon reduced time on site to just eight weeks and completed the project two weeks ahead of schedule. This significantly reduced disruption for the Trust and brought the facility into rapid service to the benefit of patient care.

Off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has handed over a new purpose-built satellite haemodialysis unit for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. In independent tests for air permeability, the building exceeds Building Regulations Part L 2010 by 90 per cent without any adaptation to the standard Yorkon building system. The unit, which has just opened, forms part of a 12m investment by the Trust to deliver more services out in the community in line with Government priorities for the rapidly expanding population requiring dialysis. The centre at Estover provides services for patients, many of whom require regular attendance for dialysis, in a user friendly community setting rather than a more typical large hospital environment. The minute you step into this tranquil mixture of historic grandeur and cutting architecture nestled right in the centre of the stunning City of Bath, you are enveloped in a sense of well-being. This sense extends throughout the building and is assisted in three areas by a Stannah Microlift or dumbwaiter. This service lift vitally moves fresh, exciting and healthy foods from the third floor professional kitchen through three floors of the building. Directly below the kitchen on the second floor is a function room with catering included, so the lift ensures delivery with no fuss and on time. The first-floor restaurant is the final stop for the lift and is absolutely crucial to customer service satisfaction. Peter Rollins, Sales and Marketing Manager at Thermae Bath Spa, explains: When the building was opened to the public five years ago we didnt initially

have the facility of a dumbwaiter. How I wished we had. Since installing the Stannah Microlift this year the movement of food from the kitchen has become so much easier and reliable. The lift was installed very quickly and neatly, with most of the work being completed overnight so our routine was only minimally disrupted. We were very pleased with the process of purchasing the lift and even more pleased to have the benefits of it every day. The City of Bath has three principal natural springs. The Kings Spring supplies the world-famous Roman Baths. Thermae Bath Spa uses the natural hot spring water from the Kings, Hetling and Cross Springs in all four of its thermal pools. Its amazing to think that this water fell as rain around 10,000 years ago, heats naturally beneath the earths crust, emerges at a temperature of 45 degrees centigrade and contains 42 different minerals.
The Microlift 50CBD with bottom drive, just one product in the Microlift range, is serviced by the Bristol branch of Stannah Lift Services, a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support. This covers service, repair, modernisation and refurbishment of all types of lifts, stairlifts, escalators and moving walkways not only those from the Stannah product range, but also other lift manufacturers equipment. Stannah also offers a bespoke lifts service, custom-building lifts to meet customers specific requirements. Find out more about the Thermae Bath Spa experience at www.thermaebathspa.co.uk

Schooldays are said to be the best days of your life Arch Timber Protection, a Lonza Company, is ensuring that they are also the safest, using its DRICON fire retardant treatment to protect internal timber at the new Passmores Academy building, Harlow, Essex. In September 2011, the students move into the new building at Tracyes Road, Harlow, which was designed in collaboration with the school staff to meet the needs of the staff and students. This purpose-built site includes environmentallyfriendly building materials, such as internal natural wood linings. Arch used a DRICON Euroclass B fire treatment to protect around 10,000 linear metres of FSC-certified European oak cladding supplied by national timber merchant Arnold Laver Timber World, which was installed by joiners and carpenters M&S Contractors, which used the oak internal wood cladding for the largest internal cladding aspect of the project. Arnold Laver Timber World branch sales representative Richard Claridge says: We have a long relationship with Arch, and we always recommend them when we offer fire retardant treated timber. This is because we want to use a company we know and trust, who can work alongside us to provide an individually tailored service to suit the project in hand, and who can provide
documentation to prove that the treatment will be suitable. We were proud to work with Arch Timber Protection and M&S Contractors on such a high calibre and unique project, and we are confident that we have supplied some of the best materials available on the market. Western Red Cedar cladding supplied by International Timber was also used to create the effective external sign on the building. These timbers had a NONCOM Exterior fire retardant treatment from Arch. Arch Timber Protection fire retardant sales manager Jacqui Hughes says: Its important to protect our young people and the buildings where they study, and we are delighted to be involved in this stunning new academy project. The combination of our proven DRICON and NON-COM Exterior fire retardant treatments will provide a long term protection for years to come, whilst allowing the natural beauty of the timbers to shine through.

Title: Heatherwick Brings New Life In Black Walnut To Worth Abbey Location: Worth Abbey Church Application: American Black Walnut Visit: www.americanhardwood.org
Nestled on a crest overlooking the South Downs, Worth Abbey Church has a striking aspect. Its remarkable conical sloping roof sets off the extensive, peaceful grounds and the rolling landscape below. The 25 English Benedictine monks who reside at the Abbey run a school, a parish and a place of retreat. The Abbey Church was designed by the architect Francis Pollen, and is considered by many to be the best example of his style. Since its opening in 1974, the Abbeys furniture comprised freestanding chairs which impinged on the ambiance, creating a cluttered, temporary feel. The Monks decided that it was time to undertake some refurbishment work and took the opportunity to have a more cohesive, relevant and purposefully designed congregational and clergy furniture. They commissioned Heatherwick Studio to design and develop a furniture strategy as part of wider renovations to the Abbey Church. The furniture package included pew benches, choir stalls with misericord seats and desks, benches, credence tables, server seats and reconciliation (confessional) rooms. Heatherwick Studio is headed by Thomas Heatherwick who trained at Manchester Polytechnic and the RCA. Since its founding in 1994, the studio has earned a reputation for coming up with artistically exciting solutions to clients design briefs. The studio consists of team with a wide range of disciplines including architecture, product design, model making, fabrication, landscape design, fine art and curation, and they are used to working in a sensitive historic context, which was vital for the work undertaken within Worth Abbey. They also have a very strong making ethos, and a workshop within the practice allows them to make prototypes and models, giving them a very valuable makers eye view of all the commissions they undertake. The original auditorium space of the Abbey has a tangible spiritual feel to it; a difficult thing to achieve with modern materials without the obvious historical and religious architectural references. Natural stone and neutral colouring make the space light and airy. Heatherwick wanted to complement the materials used by Pollen and decided to use solid wood throughout for the new furniture. In a space that uses natural and neutral tones, a more traditional choice might have been oak or a more modern option could have been a pale species like maple. Heatherwick took a braver move and chose American black walnut to give a colourful aspect to the chapel, the darker heartwood creating a distinctive, defined line to the design, and the creamy sapwood adding a touch of warmth without over powering the celebrants and congregation who are the main focus of any service. According to Thomas Heatherwick, Walnut was chosen because the darker colour would give a more precise line and would in the dusky calm of the auditorium reflect a richness without adding too sharp an accent.
The main nave is a big area serving congregations of 700 people, and with capacity for double that number. The design approach has kept the circular nature of the space with a stone altar in the middle. The original furniture did not have kneelers for the congregation so these were designed as an integral part of the seating. Furniture fabrication was undertaken by Artezan, a specialist joinery division within Swift Horsman, a UK-based company chosen for their flexible and experienced approach to the complex method of construction. Swift were up for the challenge and have delivered it successfully. Thomas Heatherwick says he is immensely impressed with both the quality of the work of the craftsmen, the finish and the commitment of the firm to a very challenging commission. The way the furniture is constructed is central to the whole theme of the Heatherwick design. Having decided on solid wood and a clean lined approach, Thomas and the team at Heatherwick came up with a striking laminated design which complements the square walls of the church and the radial nature of its layout. Due movement issues inherent in working with all-solid wood construction, an interior metal frame allows the natural characteristics of the timber to come through and be strong enough to easily manage everyday use. This frame links the kneelers to the seating, making each pew a standalone piece. Working with the team at Swift Horsman, complex jigs were designed and developed to cope with the complicated glue-ups that were part and parcel of the design. The most intriguing and subtle aspect is a 0.6mm line of ash which is laminated into the layers of black walnut. This adds a sense of detail that gives it an historical link to the traditions of inlay within the craft but with a very contemporary and sculptural feel. At a distance it is barely there, but the closer you get to the furniture the more apparent and thus more effective it becomes, giving a gentle element of understated surprise to the overall effect. This is the most artistic aspect of the whole concept and it runs throughout the whole collection of furniture; the central monks seat shows it most dramatically, where the angle of the laminating meets the curve of the back, creating a wave effect in the ash veneer. This helps give a central focus to the lead preacher of the day. The overall impression is that the furniture definitely adds a cohesive feel to Pollens concept while allowing the practical considerations of running and attending a service to actually work. Thomas Heatherwick, his team and Swift Horsman are to be congratulated on a distinctive and extremely high quality solution both in terms of its ideas and its craftsmanship.

Gammas LED Downlights Are Chosen For The Manchester United Hospitality Refurb
As the football season drew to a close it was time for Old Trafford to commence its renovation projects including the hospitality areas in the West Stand and South East Quadrant, all of which needed to be completed before The Clubs testimonial, which was no mean feat when you consider that the match was only a couple of months away. Having been previously let down on lead times and serviced by a key player in the lighting industry, Manchester United FC was understandably nervous about appointing a new supplier with whom they could rely on to supply all the fittings on time and to budget. Alard Electrical Ltd, the electrical contractors for the renovation project, had previously worked with Gamma on other projects and so was happy to recommend the company as a reliable partner for the lighting requirements of the renovation. The renovation of the hospitality area in the West and South East Stand Quadrants was a prestigious project and the selected LED fittings had to help create a luxurious ambience that reflected the high-end surroundings, yet didnt detract from the other creative and decorative lighting features. With this in mind the TTX 700 lumen, 3000K with 60 beam and centre etched glass was chosen for the ambient lighting in the corridor areas. In addition to the TTX fittings, Syncro M, S1 and S2 LED lights were selected for the adjustable display lighting to highlight the various pictures which adorn the corridor walls as well as above the doorways leading off the corridors. For the toilets and hospitality bar area the Buddy M fitting was selected as an excellent low energy alternative to the 50W halogen GU10. The Buddy M provided a cost effective adjustable and lockable gimbal, 40 beam angle and a warm colour temperature of 2700K. www.gamma-uk.com

Patio Life Take A Panoramic View Securistyles Parallel Plus Hinge Is The Green & Secure Solution
Securistyle has seen continued success of its Parallel Plus hinge. The product has successfully been used in many prestigious projects. David Walsh, Sales Director of Securistyle explains why the hinge is proving so popular: The Parallel Plus Hinge has seen particular success in schools and hospitals because it is the perfect green solution and offers the best security for occupants. Security is improved because vents can be restricted to 40mm but this still allows for excellent natural ventilation by providing a balanced airflow around the entire window opening. The Parallel Plus has also tripled the weight of window sash that can be operated manually www.securistyle.co.uk

Building designers wishing to make the most of impressive scenery or landscape views can now take advantage of Rotos Patio Life sliding door system. This unique hardware suite enables very large glass sizes, filling rooms with natural light whilst at the same time making remarkably easy work of sliding large, heavy door sashes. Patio Life is the next step on from a lift and slide system. The Roto product negates the need for the lift element with its mechanism that moves the gaskets in order to make the seal. The result is sliding doors whose ease of use belies their weight up to 400 kg. Sashes containing glazed units over 3 metres wide are possible. The threshold offers excellent thermal insulation, resulting in U-values low enough for the system to have been specified in Passive House projects. Roto has also introduced a new low-profile threshold to comply with Part M of the Building Regulations. Another unique advantage is ventilation with full security: the vent mode allows airflow when the sash is fully closed and locked. Various design schemes are possible and the hardware is suitable for door sets made from timber or other composite materials. Roto offers compliance with the latest EN standards for corrosion protection and a 10 year warranty. www.roto.co.uk

Laser-Optimised Structural Profiles Extend The Scope Of Schueco Jansens Steel Faade System
A range of laser-optimised structural profiles from leading steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen greatly extends the architectural scope of the companys tried and tested VISS steel faade system. Developed in conjunction with Montanstahl AG, the new VISS Ixtra profiles use innovative connecting technology to provide the structural strength needed to allow mullions to run continuously over more than one storey. In addition, they give architects greater overall scope for creativity by significantly widening the design possibilities open to them. VISS Ixtra has six basic profiles that can vary in width from 50mm to 100mm and in depth from 30mm to 300mm, with a maximum length of 15 metres. Shapes can be laser-cut into the profiles before welding to add visual interest and webs and flanges can be specified in a range of depths ranging from 5mm to 30mm. Profiles are fabricated by laser cutting and welding with corner radii of only 0.5mm. Whatever the thickness of the profile, the laser-weld-seams are minimal when compared to conventional seams and the result is a precision-engineered look with sharp, modern lines. VISS steel faades combined with VISS Ixtra profiles offer high levels of thermal insulation and can accommodate doubleand triple-glazed units up to 70mm thick. The extraordinary structural integrity of the system means that it can support very large glass dimensions and weights. Fire-rated versions of VISS faades are also available. www.schueco.com

Article By: Kee Safety Ltd Title: Safety Is Kee Author: Jeff Rowley, Product Manager
A staggering number of accidents continue to result from slips, trips and falls from height. Against the backdrop of the HSEs Shattered Lives campaign, Jeff Rowley, Product Manager at fall protection specialist, Kee Safety Ltd looks at how the latest innovations in roof protection can help reduce the risk of accidents, whilst not affecting the aesthetics of a building. According to the HSE, falls from height remain one of the most common causes of fatality and major injury in the UK, resulting in around 35 workplace fatalities each year, at an estimated annual cost to the country of 800 million. Figures available for 2010/11 have highlighted that 3956 workers were injured as a result of a fall from height 16% of overall work related major injuries. This is a small improvement on the 2008/09 figures where 4654 major injuries were reported. Its no surprise that the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) continues to highlight the key issues and the steps that can be taken in reducing both the incidents and the cost of injuries through Shattered Lives campaign. As part of this campaign, the HSE now offer a solutions database, a short
cut guidance tool which offers advice on working at height, a special online safety tool (STEP) and a work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT). Of course, under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, as amended by the Work at Height (Amendment) Regulations 2007, there is a legal requirement for anyone who contracts others to access and maintain rooftop equipment on public buildings and social housing developments to ensure proper safety precautions are in place. These Regulations replaced all the earlier regulations about working at height. They consolidated previous legislation and implement European Council Directive 2001/45/EC concerning minimum safety and health requirements for the use of equipment for work at height (the Temporary Work at Height Directive). Breaching these regulations can result in a legal prosecution and either a substantial fine or possible imprisonment. Architects are no doubt aware of the need for roof top safety, but maybe not so conscious of the variety of systems available on the market. The appearance of a building is always of significant concern and this might
lead to a system not being put in place if it means the aesthetics of the property could be compromised. Faced with this issue, manufacturers have developed systems which take this into account. Solutions such as KeeGuard Foldshield and KeeGuard Topfix from Kee Safety provide a great option for architects. Designed as clever and unobtrusive roof safety solutions, folding guardrail systems have been purposely created for corporate and heritage public buildings where aesthetics are a significant concern. With specially hinged bases, collapsible guardrails can be lifted into place when work is in progress, then easily folded back down when not in use. Using a simple locking pin, it makes system use easy and straight forward. This foldable capability ensures it can be used over a greater choice of locations, where a fixed visible solution may be considered unsuitable for specification. As a counterbalance system, it sits on top of the roof surface without the need for any membrane penetration.
Further roof edge protection products have been developed to provide an adaptable guardrail solution for standing seam and metal profile roofs. An off the shelf product, it comprises a base plate, pre-assembled uprights and open cup fittings for quick and easy assembly. The specially designed base plate incorporates multiple fixing centres to allow for installation on a wide range of popular roofs. The base plates for standing seam roofs are fixed using non-penetrative, 2-part clamps while the plates on metal profile roofs are secured with minimal penetrations using rivets and butyl sealing strips to maintain the roof structure. These systems easily accommodate ridges, valleys, corners and other structural difference. With an upright base fitting that allows for 0-11 degree vertical adjustment and four fixing holes in the place, the system can fit into the roof profile as straightforwardly as possible. By installing these systems, the building will comply fully with the requirements of the Working at Height Regulations. These systems also
meet the relevant test requirements, including BS EN 13374 Class A. Specifying these types of systems presents contractors with a quicker, more cost-effective and more practical approach to roof edge protection.

Article By: Aico Ltd Title: All Smoke Alarms Are Not The Same Author: Neil Perdell, National Technical Manager
In the domestic smoke alarm sector there have traditionally been three alarm types: Ionisation, Optical and Heat. Each has its pros and cons in terms of what types of fire it detects, where it can be used and what can possibly cause it to false alarm. As a result, specification and installation requires a good level of knowledge and some intelligent guess work. But what if you could make the process easier? What if one alarm could actually combine the benefits and remove much of the negatives? How many times have you heard the saying that theres no single solution to a problem? And how many times have you hoped that just once that wasnt true? In the fire industry, the idea that one alarm type could be used pretty much anywhere in a property is an ideal that can seem difficult to achieve. Each property requires a risk assessment and decisions have to be made on number of alarms, alarm location, type of alarm, alarm interconnection and whether its by hard wiring or radio frequency, accessories required... and the list goes on.
Let me introduce you to the Multi-Sensor. This alarm combines two traditional sensing elements optical and heat - but has a level of intelligence built in which enables it to not only monitor the signals from both sensors, but also to interpret those signals. Before we go any further though lets recap on the different alarm types, just so you can see how clever the Multi-Sensor really is and why it makes fire alarm specification and installation that much easier. There are three alarm types used in the domestic field: Ionisation, Optical and Heat, the first two of which detect smoke and the latter detects temperature. Ionisation alarms feature a sensor chamber containing a minute and completely safe - radioactive element that ionises the air within and causes a small current to flow. If smoke enters that chamber, the balance of the current is disturbed and the alarm sounds. Ionisation alarms are normally the cheapest type and therefore often chosen as a matter of course over the other alarm types. They certainly work and are less likely to false alarm from dense tobacco smoke, excessive dust and insect ingress, but they are very sensitive to fast flaming fires and sadly to cooking fumes. If you put an Ionisation alarm anywhere near a kitchen, then youre in high risk of false alarms. Optical alarms use a completely different sensing method and actually look for smoke using a pulsed light beam in the sensing chamber. They are most effective at detecting smouldering fires with large particles, such as produced by burning furniture, and are less likely to react to the type of invisible smoke produced by cooking fumes, so are ideal for circulation spaces such as hallways close to kitchens and landings. However, they can react to steam, so should not be located too close to bathrooms. Lastly there is the Heat alarm, which doesnt detect smoke at all, but instead reacts to temperatures of 58C or over. A Heat alarm should only be used in a kitchen or garage and only as part of a fire alarm system that also includes smoke alarms. Furthermore, all of the alarms must be interconnected. The Heat alarm is very straightforward in terms of its location suitability, but the real problem comes when determining where to use Ionisation or Optical. Even a highly experienced risk assessor can get this wrong as he / she may not be aware of all the factors. Maybe the resident is regularly burning food; maybe they are heavy drinkers and smokers; these are not the sort of questions you ask, even if you have the opportunity! A Multi Sensor helps take the guess work out of alarm specification and installation. As mentioned previously, a Multi Sensor uses both Optical and Heat sensors and interprets the signals to get a better understanding of whats really happening in the immediate environment. Due to this, it benefits from a quick response to both slow smouldering and fast flaming fires yet is virtually immune to kitchen fumes and contamination. This makes it the ideal choice for all rooms in a dwelling except a kitchen. Robert Shaw from Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council has witnessed the benefits of the Multi-Sensor first hand in a sheltered accommodation site featuring 41 bungalows with warden call facilities. The bungalows were fitted with a smoke alarm in the hallway and a heat alarm in the kitchen, but problems were being encountered from false alarms. Whilst the heat
In a rented property this is all the more difficult as a risk assessment isnt solely about the property; its also about the people that live in it and in rented accommodation this will change. Smokers, for example, are at greater risk as smoking materials are more likely to be the cause of a fire. The elderly and the young are also higher risk as they are often less able to vacate the property quickly, so need as earlier a warning as possible. And then there are those with disabilities, including the hard of hearing whom may require a specific alarm with a visual strobe light warning. So, no, one fire alarm does not fit all. However, what if you could reduce the number of criteria to take into account when designing a fire alarm system without compromising the integrity of the system and the safety of the residents? In fact, what if you could reduce the number of criteria to take into account and also actually improve the fire alarm system?
detector in the kitchen caused no problems, we found the smoke detector in the hallway kept going off from smoke caused by cooking vapours. This was happening every two months. The Fire Brigade has been really helpful trying to educate the residents about their cooking, but many of them are quite elderly and are used to doing things a certain way. After 18 months of this, we decided enough was enough and we had to do something. We already use Aico fire and CO alarms, so when I received their newsletter containing details of a new Multi-Sensor alarm which reduces false alarms, I got in touch immediately. We did a trial of four of the alarms in the bungalows and we didnt get a single false alarm in four months. The Multi Sensor is also ideal for problem areas that you can immediately see will be more prone to false alarms with a single sensor alarm. Take for example a property such as a flat that has the bathroom and kitchen close to each other. The alarm clearly needs to go in the hallway between these but choose an Ionisation alarm and it may react to cooking fumes, whereas the Optical alarm could cause similar problems from steam from the bathroom. This exact situation was found by Northwards Housing at Manchester City Councils recent development of 32 new purpose built two bedroom
bungalows. One Aico Multi-Sensor has been fitted in the central hallway between the kitchen and bathroom in these new bungalows and false alarms have been avoided altogether. The Multi Sensor is far from a one solution alarm and no one would suggest that. However, where there is doubt about the best alarm type, where you know there could be a potential for false alarms and in rental properties where there are changing tenants, the Multi Sensor reduces the risk and helps make the job of alarm specification and installation that much easier. Aico Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Europes leader in residential fire and gas detection. All alarms are designed and built in Europe - specifically to meet UK standards and regulations.

Article By: U-Roof Ltd Title: Show Some Steel Author: David Thurston, Director
Theres a lot to be said for showing some steel when it comes to domestic roofing projects! Timber solutions will continue to lead the way as the roofing product of choice for new build homes but a growing number of architects, homebuilders and self build enthusiasts are discovering the merits of using steel to create their roofing structures. Theres a host of advantages to utilising steel, not least the time and cost saving implications associated with installation. Feedback from customers shows that the U-Roof system goes up in around 25% of the time taken using timbers despite costing approximately the same and that clearly has implications for the efficiency and timescales of house building developments. For example a 100 square metre roof area can typically be installed insulated and made watertight within one day. Generally speaking steel systems are considerably more lightweight than timber and can be easily flat packed and delivered in one easy load. U-Roof is around 50% of the weight of your like for like traditional timber beam so there are clear health and safety issues at play here too. Steel systems also deliver around 20% more attic space and are perfectly suited for room in the roof projects. It can also be advantageous where planning regulations restrict the overall height of the development. There is also the versatility of being able to take account of complicated roof designs where dormers, multiple pitches, valleys and hips can present a considerable challenge for timber systems. All site fixings are also readily
06 ISSUE 6 2011
visible which enables easy inspection. Like most timber roof suppliers, U-Roof offers a complete start to finish design service that means our structures can be put together, Meccano style, using no specialist tools and requiring no specific skill sets. Time and again we come across customers who have never installed a roof before but suddenly become converts to our system after adhering to our easy-to-follow instructions and drawings as well as 3D modelling in certain circumstances. The strength of steel is another facet to bear in mind and our system, for instance, comes with a 50 year structural warranty backed by accreditation from bodies such as the Steel Construction Institute and the NHBC. Unlike many roof timbers steel does not shrink, warp, twist or rot and therefore subsequent plasterwork maintains its integrity for a lot longer and, of course, steel is non combustible. Environmental performance is playing an ever increasing role in the construction of new homes and steel really can tick all the boxes in this respect. Its 100% recyclable and the manufacturing process, which utilises state-of-the-art machinery, results in almost negligible waste. Whilst timber will continue to lead the way for a long time to come its clear that theres a lot to be said for steel and systems such as U-Roof especially when it comes to complex residential developments and that argument is bearing up in terms of interest from all parts of the housebuilding sector.

Swung House - The Hague A Duet In MDF And OSB Hingham Primary School Are Proud Owners Of Their Honka Log Building From Logwise
Logwise Ltd, the official agents for Honkarakenne Oyj (Honka) in the UK have recently supplied a bespoke log building for Hingham Primary School in Norfolk. Timberville Ltd, who are the Logwise agents in East Anglia, were originally approached by a local village school in Cromer that wanted to replace their tired old mobile unit with a new log cabin to be used as a pre-school building. Logwise were provided with a concept plan for the building which was altered and amended by their Honka trained designer. The new design proved so popular that Norfolk County Council Education Department enquired about 5 such buildings. Hingham Primary School are now the proud owners of their Honka log building for the playgroup. The building itself has been constructed from one of Honkas laminated logs at 112mm wide. There is an additional insulation wall structure with Warmcel recycled newspaper insulation which helps to ensure the building is as sustainable as possible. Construction was carried out by one of the Finnish teams that Logwise operate around the country, under the supervision of the main contractors T Gill & Sons from Norwich. Speed of build was one of the deciding factors for Norfolk Property Services in choosing Logwise to supply the building, and with the log kit being erected in less than a week, their decision was justified. www.logwise.co.uk

FSC-certified Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB set the scene in an office interior geared towards the new way of working in Swung House in The Hague. The carbon-neutral building offers flexible work space solutions for home-based business owners and independent professionals. Interior architect Odette Ex decided to break away from a traditional office design and opted for a stark and striking loft-style interior with a contemporary look. The custom-designed furniture and fittings in Swung House are made from a combination of Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB, creating a unique look. The ColorVlok OSB (oriented strand board) used for the structural construction is treated with a special coating that gives the original natural appearance of the OSB a lovely texture. Drawer fronts and doors are made of smooth and sleek Medite Ecologique with an opaque finish. The homogenous structure of Medite MDF makes it very stable and provides a solid hold for handles, hinges and locks. Swung House is situated in an impressive high-profile location. The multitenant office building offers professional and inspiring flexible work space solutions that can be rented (on demand, by the hour or by the half day) by home-based business owners and independent professionals who want to maintain their networks and client relationships. Odette Ex was involved right from the start in developing a concept for an interior that would enable the new way of working. The custom-designed MDF and OSB furniture and fittings in Swung House include a large reception desk in the lobby, postboxes and a pantry on the ground floor, metres of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on the first floor and low partition walls that separate the workstations on the first and second floors. With an eye for detail, the interior architect devotes meticulous attention to the level of finish of the interior. The edges of the OSB skeleton of the custom-designed cabinets with doors are finished with a strip of matching
film, but the edges of the open cabinets with shelves are not finished. This approach enabled us to ensure that the project stayed within budget without having to compromise on quality. As Jean-Marc Verhoeven explains, sustainability was the guiding principle in the implementation of the project: We are delighted that the Swung House concept won the Telework Aspect Award and was awarded 5 stars in the Good & Green Guide The Hague. Odette Ex prefers to choose sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Spatiality and harmony are essential elements in my designs, while the details determine the coherence of the overall look. The two panel products used to construct the custom-designed furniture and fittings are both made by Coillte Panel Products using wood obtained from sustainably managed and FSC-certified forests owned by Coillte. Both types of panels come with an FSC certificate and are made with zero added formaldehyde. Odette Ex says the new thinking on sustainability definitely influenced the process of developing a concept for the new way of working, and Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB are very much part of this picture. www.coillte.ie

Portakabin Delivers Highly Innovative And Sustainable Modular Solution At Hull Royal Infirmary
A new modular building at Hull Royal Infirmary providing state-of-the-art hospital facilities for up to 90,000 patients each year has been delivered by Portakabin using a highly innovative and sustainable construction solution to the benefit of patient care. Portakabin was appointed design and build contractor by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to construct a 3,000sqm permanent outpatients and training facility as part of a 7m investment. This complex three-storey building was manufactured, fitted out and handed over after just seven months on site despite exceptional winter working conditions to help the Trust meet increased demand for its services. The project required a highly flexible and innovative approach to its construction, combining 50 specially manufactured steel-framed modules with 50 units from another modular building on the hospital site that had become surplus to requirements. Portakabin recycled and fully refurbished the structure of a twostorey ward block which included stripping out each module and installing new windows, upgrading the floor structure and re-lining internal walls. This approach to recycling and re-using an existing modular structure for a completely new, purpose-designed facility made the project highly sustainable and cost effective and demonstrates the flexibility of modular construction when a building is no longer required. The Portakabin solution also reduced the programme time which in turn minimised disruption to patient services a key issue for the Trust because of the close proximity of the new facility to the main hospital. Commenting on the project, Duncan Taylor, Head of Estates at the Trust, said, Speed was the principal reason for using modular construction for this project, which enabled us to reduce the programme time by around six months. The Portakabin solution also allowed us to re-use the structure of an existing modular ward building, minimising both cost and waste sent to landfill. The result is a really excellent scheme with facilities we are very proud of. Feedback from staff and patients has been extremely positive since the building opened. Robert Snook, General Manager of Portakabin Sales, said, This building was the most complex design and build project that we have ever undertaken in terms of logistics, design and timescale. It demonstrates our ability to deliver projects of this scale from initial concept and planning to ground works, offsite manufacture, M&E design and installation, and final commissioning to a challenging programme, on a very constrained hospital site, and our flexible approach to meeting a clients project-specific requirements. The 200-room facility accommodates the ophthalmology department on the ground floor with dermatology services on the first floor, allowing the Trust to consolidate services on one site as well as to increase capacity. On the upper floor, a new Clinical Skills Centre provides high quality education and training facilities for doctors, with facilities including a simulated ward, critical care unit and theatre suite. Some areas, such as operating theatres, feature the Portakabin high performance pre-installed concrete floor system which is designed to accommodate highly sensitive medical equipment. In addition to its partially recycled structure, the scheme has a number of sustainable elements, including a central atrium which runs the full length of the building, maximising natural light and ventilation and reducing the reliance on artificial lighting whilst creating a high quality patient environment; solar shading, a partial heat recovery ventilation system; movement and daylight sensors to control high frequency lighting; and air source heat and cooling pumps for the first floor. The building is also controlled by a building management system. The striking, contemporary exterior aesthetics for the building comprise stonecoloured horizontal aluminium cladding panels to the ground and first floors, with vertical blue multi-panels providing a contrast at high level. The end faade of the stair tower features square-cut stone blocks with recessed detailing to complement adjacent buildings on the hospital site. Full height curtain walling encloses the stair core, creating a light and welcoming reception at each floor level. The building was designed in line with NHS guidelines, including Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health Building Notes (HBNs). www.portanews.co.uk

Renolits Single Ply Solar Membrane Is Rated The Most Reflective In The World
Renolits Alkorbright single ply membrane has been independently tested in Italy and the USA, returning the highest reflectivity ratings. High reflectivity means a cooler rooftop, assisting the efficiency of crystalline silicon cell based solar panels. Reflected rays also can significantly influence the performance of CIGS based panels by reflecting rays back from the roof surface to the panel. The Alkorbright single ply membrane is a through colour white composition with a lacquered surface that prevents the build up of contaminants and ensures easy maintenance. Initially the membranes reflectivity was measured by the Groups own testing laboratories where technicians arrived at a rating of 90%. The company was acutely aware that potential customers would require an independent rating and turned to the University of Modena in northern Italy to conduct the research. The Universitys technicians actually returned a higher reading than the Renolit team - in excess of 91% and almost 92% total reflectivity. In the USA, where the Government offers significant financial incentives for cool roof installations, the independent CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) has only recently conducted very similar tests and lists the Alkorbright membrane as returning the worlds highest solar reflection at 91%. Solar panel manufacturers utilise a variety of different technologies, one of which is copper indium gallium selenide based - CIGS for short. CIGS based panels are only affected by certain parts of solar radiations striking the panel. The performance of these panels is also greatly influenced by the same portion of the solar spectrum being reflected back from the roof surface to the panel. In order to arrive at a CIGS reflectivity rating, it is only the same specific portion of the solar spectrum that is analysed. Once again the Renolit Alkorbright membrane returns a 97% CIGS rating! In most industrial and commercial applications - and supermarkets are a good example - the panels are likely to be installed on new or maybe existing flat roofs. When these surfaces are waterproofed using the Alkorbright single ply membrane as opposed to a regular grey membrane, the increased return
to electrical power output by solar instalations equates to around 4% for photovoltaic systems, and 9% for solar thermal systems. The ALKORBRIGHT membrane is installed using virtually the same installation techniques as Renolits ALKORPLAN range of membranes, and is complemented by the manufacturers unique ALKORSOLAR profile carrier system. More informaton on the Renolit range of single ply roofing membranes can be found at www.alkorproof.com. For technical support call: 01670 718283.

We cannot control the weather and the effects of wind on interior pressure, or the effect of cold snaps on potentially increased condensation, but we can control the materials and methods that we choose to enhance building quality and sustainability. An airtight house requires both a well-managed, integrated construction process from start to finish and a proper understanding of interior ventilation and maintenance issues beyond. The seal must be complete and must be kept intact fenestration, penetrations, laps and gaps of all kinds must be taken into account but the installation system from membranes to tapes and sealants, is simple once understood, while guides, training and renowned customer support are all readily available from reputable manufacturers such as DuPont. Moving forward in the right direction means that all trades from installers to plumbers and electricians must take ownership of the air barrier and requires trust in our workmanship and its ability to adapt, evolve and advance. Its time for the industry to pull together behind one holistic and optimal house-building vision. The optimising combination of durable, reliable, high-performance membranes offers a sensibly holistic solution, that if properly understood and installed, addresses not only temporary condensation issues but also significantly enhances the overall thermal performance, integrity and interior comfort of the structure. This, in the long run, adds value and brings the kind of benefits that almost every section of society is aiming for in the current climate. Airtight construction is a sensible way forward to sustainable housing Be one step ahead: achieve 2013 sustainability codes now by installing DuPont AirGuard AVCLs and DuPont Tyvek breather membranes, which already meet these goals The UK construction industry must advance toward modern methods and materials Education is key, in workmanship, management, planning and end-user activity An AVCL, properly installed, together with proven air and water-tight, yet vapour-open roofing underlays offers the optimal, holistic membrane solution Thermal performance, energy-efficiency, moisture control, structural integrity and interior comfort are all improved by adopting this futureproof, easy to install solution
Case Study: How DuPontTM AirGuard Reflective achieves an airtight seal of approval at a Housing Association project in York DuPont AirGuard Reflective was installed to effectively line the inside of the structure in a continuous layer. It is a metallised air & vapour control layer (AVCL) that is impermeable to both air and moisture while offering very low emissivity, thereby also playing a key role in preventing heat loss and reflecting up to 95% of internal radiant heat in the winter. Pressure tests on the completed plots have shown excellent results: Plot 1 (end terrace) - Air permeability 1.58 m3/h.m2, Air leakage 1.51 h-1 Plot 2 (mid terrace) - Air permeability 1.94 m3/h.m2, Air leakage 1.86 h-1 Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a reasonable limit for the Design Air Permeability of 10m3/h.m2 at 50 Pa. - and these figures are considerably below that maximum prescribed limit. The key to successful air tightness, therefore, is the quality of both the membrane and the tapes, together with the workmanship during installation. Vertical Daylighting
Kalwall translucent systems do not always need to have standard, rectangular grids. Providing the area is large enough, variations of size, shape and layout are possible. A recent example is installed at the JCB Academy near Uttoxeter where a new sports hall is lit with Verti-Kal featuring a brickbond vertical variation of the diffused daylighting system. This can also be used horizontally. The JCB Academy is the first of a brand new type of school, focused on delivering high quality engineering and business education. Kalwall is the unique system of diffusing natural daylight through walls or roofs. The museum-quality natural light is ideal for sports halls because it eliminates stark contrasts of light and shadow and creates ideal playing surface. Importantly, because the system is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. www.stoakes.co.uk

As the maximum escape travel distance in two of the apartment buildings was within the 7.5 metre limit covered by Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, the SHEVTEC Natural Corridor Ventilation System was installed. However, the six storey F Building had a travel distance of 12.0 metres so SE Controls created a dedicated fire engineered solution around its LABC approved SHEVTEC Extended Travel Distance System. In the event of a fire, the main exit route is through a singe protected stairwell, so the SE Controls solution had to provide high integrity smoke and heat ventilation that not only allowed occupants to travel the increased distance to safety, but must also perform at least as well as the code compliant systems installed in the other two accommodation blocks. The extended travel system used in Building F was originally developed by SE Controls using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to create an off the shelf, fully compliant and CE marked solution that can not only assist escape but also simplify the buildings design by removing the need for additional escape stairs. In addition, the size of the smoke shafts used can be reduced to less than half of the 1.5m2 required under a typical natural ventilation system. When combined with the requirement for only one escape stair, this allowed the developers to incorporate more apartments within the buildings envelope.
The SHEVTEC system uses a dual smoke shaft and fan ventilated solution linked by smoke sensors through SE Controls powerful OSLoop control system, which when triggered determines which shaft is closest to the fire and automatically opens the smoke shaft doors on each floor to extract smoke away from escape routes, corridors and stairs. Once actuated, OSLoop continues to monitor the entire system throughout the incident to ensure the system maintains its performance in accordance with the imminent EN12101 part 9 standard. SE Controls provided a full turnkey solution to the Chettles Yard development, involving project management, the supply and installation of the SHEVTEC system and liaison with all the appropriated authorities and inspectors, as well as full testing and rigorous commissioning procedures to verify the systems performance, operation and compliance with the design brief. A fully detailed PDF case study covering the specific fire engineered smoke ventilation solution installed by SE Controls is available for download from the companys website at www.secontrols.com

Gilgen Provides Bespoke Sliding Doors For Checkpoint Security At Manchester Airport Howe Greens HG100 Channel Drain Keeps The Beer Flowing From Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills Brewery is an independent brewer with an award-winning portfolio of beer and real ale. The company recently relocated to the prestigious Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking where over 20 metres of Howe Greens HG100 linear channel drain was installed when existing estate buildings were refurbished and a new extension built on the site of the UKs largest single estate vineyard. Biwater, the international water and wastewater specialist, managed the project and was responsible for overseeing essential drainage works. They specified the Howe Green HG100 channel drain in a custom-designed fermentation area to collect water from the many cleaning operations that happen throughout the production process. All brewing processes involve water in some way, explains Ross Hunter, Surrey Hills Director Most of the work is cleaning the equipment between each brew, which produces waste water. Reliable drainage was an essential requirement for our new premises and the Howe Green product is doing a good job and performing very well for us. Made from stainless steel with a heavy duty anti slip ladder grating, Howe Greens HG100 Channel Drain was installed at the new Surrey Hills plant with a 9mm sloping polyurethane screed floor with non-slip chips added for additional safety. The HG100 is suitable for a wide range of applications including changing rooms, shower areas, spas, kitchens, laboratories, veterinary surgeries and other areas that demand durable and effective drainage. A fully modular system, the HG100 range is available in 304-grade or 316-grade stainless steel with both sloping and level channels. With a selection of 90 bends, T-junctions, stop ends and outlets, plus a selection of application-specific gratings, it represents a complete linear drain channel solution. It is suitable for all types of floor finishes, including ceramic tiles, resin and PVC, and with a load bearing up to 3 tonnes. www.howegreen.com

Gilgen Door Systems, has developed and installed bespoke sliding doors for new checkpoint security lanes at Manchester Airport. Gilgen installed the unique sliding doors that form part of new security gate systems. A total of ten gates have been installed five in terminal 1, three in terminal 2 and 2 in terminal 3 and form part of departure security systems that allow passengers to pass from landside to airside. The new security checkpoints direct passengers through a turnstile and a magnetic body scanner leading to a glass pod, when a passenger passes the security check, one of the Gilgen sliding doors opens allowing the passenger to continue through to reclaim belongings scanned by baggage scanners. If they do not pass the security check the adjacent sliding door opens directing the passenger through to an area where further security checks are undertaken. Each gate required two sets of two single sliding automatic doors. Each door set is mounted on a single header operating system, but operate independently ensuring only the correct lane is opened enabling the closed door to form a screen to prevent passengers from walking through the wrong lane. The doors operate in conjunction with security gate system and provide an orderly and controlled security checkpoint that optimises passenger throughput and security personnel resources. The system is also able to perform random security checks as required. The bespoke SLX sliding door systems use intelligent Communication Bus (CAMBus) technology unique to Gilgen to enable remote interfacing with the security gate system. This system also ensures safe, reliable operation of the doors, exceeding current industry legislation. Gilgen Door Systems has over 80 years international experience in the design, manufacture and installation of a leading range of commercial and industrial door systems. With regional centres across the UK, Gilgen also offers a nationwide repair and maintenance service. The company is a member of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). www.gilgendoorsystems.co.uk
