The basic theme for this semester is to improve the result of our students. We plan to establish a study circle where the students of every class are taught by their peers. The basic idea of the study circle is You learn when you teach. Teamwork is very essential in this case and it would be beneficial to one and all. The Bayers Scholarship rounds have been completed. We have MoUs in progress with various organizations, working how to maximize benefits. We are planning to launch a variety of certification courses for our students. Our internal internships have been successful. A lot of students have interned in Prof. Seema Shah several well-known companies. IBM RSA Training Program Career Counseling
A new team of HoDs have been appointed based on our rotation policy. Academic advisors have been appointed for every 20 students to help them in filling their student diaries. Gadget Guru, technology reviews have been initiated on a weekly basis. We plan to conduct beyond the syllabus activities such as IVs, guest lectures, webinars etc. VLive! is up to date with the lesson plans and test solutions with the VIOLA team in action.

who graduated from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in 2010 has made the Institute proud by securing the second rank at the University of Mumbai level in his second semester ME(EXTC) exams. Hes currently a faculty in the same Department at our Vidyalankar Institute of Technology. It all seems just like yesterday that I was listening with rapt attention to my professors...and here I am now, as a member of the faculty myself! My days as an undergraduate student at VIT breezed past like a dream come true. I still clearly remember my first day and first year in this college. Ill always be grateful to Prof. Sonaali Borkar and Prof. Avila Naik for motivating me to realize my true potential right at the foundation level. As a member of the faculty, the tremendous opportunities that are present for selfimprovement make my job an important learning experience. VIT alumnus at Stuttgart, Germany

Jajnabalkya Guhathakurta, has been the Institutes General Secretary in 2009 and he passed B.E. (Electronics) in First Class with Distinction with 74% marks. Currently he is in Stuttgart for pursuing M.Sc. (Technology) in Embedded Systems at the University of Stuttgart. His area of specialization is related to Embedded Systems applied to Automobile Industry. He has earned full Assistant-ship for his studies and he would be doing internship developing electronics controls for automobiles at Porsche and MercedesBenz!

When other students are trying at higher studies in US, Jajnabalkya chose a different career path close to the core and he is even learning German for that purpose.

VIT is proud of Jajans fantastic achievement and wishes him good luck in all his ventures!

IBM RSA Training Program

Somanath Thigale, Sr. Technical Evangelist in Zensoft Services Pvt. Ltd. conducted a comprehensive session on IBM RSA for Teaching and Administrative faculty from 18th 21st July at the Computer Centre. The session was designed to train and make the faculty aware and knowledgeable about the IBM RSA. Interactive sessions, group discussions and active role plays kept the enthusiasm levels of the attendees high. The topics that were discussed were: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE is the worlds largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. It is an international non -profit, professional organization for the advancement of technology. It has the most members of any technical professional organization in the world, with more than 3,95,000 members in around 150 countries. The IEEE consists of 38 societies, organized around specialized technical fields, with more than 300 local organizations that hold regular meetings.

Introduction of IBM Ce : The introduction was followed by a brief discussion on Rational, Tivoli, Lotus, DB2,Websphere. Introduction on IBM Requisite PRO : A product of IBM used for Analysis phase. Introduction to Design Phase of SDLC : Case study discussion to implement UML Introduction to RSA : IBM Product used for Design Phase Diagrams.

IEEE offers educational opportunities such as IEEE Expert Now Online Education Courses, the Education Partners Program, Standards in Education and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The IEEE provides learning opportunities within the engineering sciences, research, and technology. The goal of the IEEE education programs is to ensure the growth of skill and knowledge in the electricity-related technical professions and to foster individual commitment to continuing education among IEEE members, the engineering and scientific communities, and the general public.

Career Counseling
A presentation to TE Semester V EXTC students regarding career counseling after completion of BE course was held on 5 and 9 August in their respective classrooms. The objective of this activity was to generate options for career development.

IEEE Expert Now is a collection of online educational courses designed for self-paced learning. Education Partners, exclusive for IEEE members, offers on-line degree programs, certifications and courses at a 10% discount. The Standards in Education website explains what standards are and the importance of developing and using them. The site includes tutorial modules and case illustrations to introduce the history of standards, the basic terminology, their applications and impact on products, as well as news related to standards, book reviews and links to other sites that contain information on standards.

The students were provided awareness regarding their higher study options, their entrance exams.

This activity was coordinated by Prof. Vijay Purohit and Prof. Dattatray Bade.

About 55-58 students attended this activity and through this activity, they became aware of the careers to follow after BE.s

Spotlight - L&T

Pre-Placement Training
Pre-Placement Training was conducted for BE INFT, CMPN I, CMPN II, ETRX, EXTC I EXTC II & BIOM students between 11-07-2011 and 23-07-2011. The training was held for all the branches simultaneously. The students were informed about the training before their sixth semester examination and the tentative schedule was also given to them. Final schedule for the training was uploaded on vidyalankarLive.com one week before the actual training. The students were clearly told about the contents of the training well in advance. Department of First Year Engineering
First Year Induction Program
The FE Induction and Orientation Program was organized by the First Year Engineering Department on August 20 to welcome students who have gained admission to VIT. Held in seven venues for each of the seven branches, the event started off with a welcome address by the respective Class Teachers, the Principals address, followed by an interactive presentation on the Institutional policies, rules and regulations and general inputs necessary for First Year students. Second Year and Third year students, presented about VIOLA, shared their set of experiences at VIT and spoke about the plethora of opportunities for academic and personal growth that VIT provides. College bags along with notes were distributed to all first year students.

(Glyph is from a Greek word for carving.) A moof monster is a vague and indefinable source of trouble for users of information technology. Sean Anderson, on the other hand, had numbers instead of words in mind when he suggested another name for Larry Page and Sergey Brins BackRub search engine (written in 1996 in the java and python computer languages). In 1997, Sean suggested googolplex, after the mathematical unit that refers to extremely large numbers, but Larry decided on the shortened form: googol. According to David Koller of the Stanford University, Sean misspelled the word as google. The rest is history of extremely large numbers.

Calculator Workshop
A calculator workshop in association with ITSA was organized on 6th and 13th September 2011. Students from across all branches from First Year were familiarized with various functions of Casio ES and MS series, with the modes of both the calculators like Complex, Matrix, Base, Equations, etc. They were also taught the usage of the shift and alpha functions. Working on functions like trigonometric functions was also explained to the students. It was a very valuable and an informative workshop, where many functions were made clear and some new functions were introduced.

Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

1. 75 students of the Department were placed in various companies like Infosys, HCL, L&T, Tech Mahindra. GREENADD conducted cloud computing workshop for classes SE, TE and BE on 10-11 September 2011. It saw a terrific response. Our students Prashant Bhange, Mandar Raje, Gargi Ghurye, Gaurav Bhangle from TE-EXTC1 bagged 2nd prize in the Line Follower competition held at VESIT PRAXIS. SE, TE and BE Results were declared. Abhishekh Patil topped the SE class, Gaurang Naik topped the TE class and Rakesh Chavan topped in BE. Gadget Reviews were taken on topics like motion sensing technology-KINECT , MINI GLOBAL GPS system, QUAD DSO. EXTC Department joined in for the visit to the AUTOMATION EXPO held at BOMBAY EXHIBITION CENTRE, Goregaon on 22-23 September 2011. The events organized by ETSA during the semester included a presentation on Gadget Guru and Technical Workshop. ME EXTC had intake of 18 students this academic year. The second batch of ME-EXTC started this semester with an intake of 18 students.

Department of Electronics Engineering

Industrial Visit:
VIT organized an industrial visit to CST Mumbai Railway Station Central Railway on August 20,2011. The time Industrial Visit to Central Railway facility at the CST Embedded Hardware, communication and software enhance the students Mumbai railway station was planned with the intention of providing students with the exposure to the Real systems. Another objective was to

knowledge with regards to the electronics and Information Technology aspects that goes into the running of critical Railway operations as Passenger Indicators, Announcements and Signaling Systems.

The Computer Society of India is a non-profit professional meet to exchange views and information learn and share ideas. The wide spectrum of members is committed to the advancement of the theory and practice of Computer Engineering and Technology Systems. The mission of the CSI is to facilitate research, knowledge sharing, learning and career enhancement for all categories of IT professionals, while simultaneously inspiring and nurturing new entrants into the industry and helping them to integrate into the IT community. Recently, a visit was conducted by our college students and ties to Bombay Exhibition Centre at Goregaon. It was an Exhibition where many manufacturer companies facul-

This time the Department has five University toppers in the final year. The overall result of final year is 92% pass percentage, with 40 distinctions.

CSI Spotlight: Skill Development and Research: MD Agrawal The previous quarter started with an Advisory Panel Meet. The Department invited Dr Someshwar, the Head of Radiology at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital to give suggestions on how the Department can be improved. Dr Someshwar suggested the initiatiation of membership with MSRA & IRIA. Under the lab development activity faculties had visited the IIT Lab. Also many final year students are going for internship at various hospitals & companies.

A guest lectures was conducted on Innovations in Imaging Technologies for the students on 26th August 2011. We invited Dr. Ravi Ramakantan a Consulting Radiologist from Seven hills Hospital. He discussed the various aspects of working of various imaging modalities. A guest lecture was conducted by Mr. Sagar Apte on CATHLAB. The procedure of CT Angiography was explained very precisely. The concept of Fluoroscopy was explained. HEPA Filters, Lead Coats, Helium Boil Off , Ringing path concept were also explained. Two Gadget Guru sessions on "Transducers in Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation" & "JPEG" and "A GLANCE ON OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY" were conducted by Prof. Nandesh Chiplunkar and Priyanka Gaikwad (BMSA member). A visit to IIT Bombay was organized by the Lab Development Committee for the staff on 15th September 2011and the co-coordinator of this activity were Prof. Suvarna Udgire. to understand the various practices at IITB and to explore the various R&D/consultancy work which can be taken up in labs. Later a visit to Nanotechnology lab was organized.

The semester began with many students of the Department getting placed in reputed companies. Neil Dalvi from BE CMPN I got placed in Works Application.CSI and ACM organized a JOOMLA workshop on the 24 of September. Joomla is an award winning content management system.

CSI also conducted a Cloud Computing and Virtualization workshop on 10 &11 September A seminar on mobile application development on android platform was organized on 8 September. CESA conducted a seminar on Microsoft Tabletop on 10 August and a seminar on Mozilla Seabird concept phone on 14 September.

Gadget Guru Seminar on Visual Studio and .NET by ITSA
The seminar furnished the students with optimum knowledge and also explained the applications of most of the basic functions which had relevance in their academic subjects. Around 70 students attended the seminar and Prof. Icchanshu Jaiswal was invited as the chief guest for this seminar.

Session on Ways of effective communication with parents for faculty

ITSA delivered this seminar in a stipulated time slot and a light atmosphere was maintained throughout the entire workshop. We tried to include every possible detail in this seminar which would be helpful for them in their future. The topics covered were: .NET Framework, .NET Vision. VB.NET, Basics of Visual Studio, Visual Studio Application, Lifestyle Management, Language Specific Versions

PIC organized a session on Ways of effective communication with parents for faculty on Thursday 28/07/2011 in the conference hall. Prof. Beena Ballal was the activity coordinator .The speaker for the session was Prof. Kavita Pai Fondekar. It was attended by 14 members of the faculty. on 21 September 2011. The seminar furnished the students with optimum knowledge and also explained the applications of most of the basic functions of the product as well as its working and all details regarding the security of money.

Tata Glimpses:
A guest lecture was organized on 14 September 2011 on TATA Glimpses for Sem I students. This was conducted by Mr. T R Doongaji - Dean, Business Excellence. The session gave students an overview of how to do business ethically and develop the community around. It aimed at making the students understand that business has a larger purpose than mere earning profits. Research Workshop by Dr. Bal Chansarkar: In order to ensure high quality research projects form students, a research workshop was organized for Sem III students by Dr. Bal Chansarkar who had been director of Middlesex University, London, U.K. and guides tPhD students. The highly interactive sessions had detailed deliberations, practicals and case studies, implementing Minitab software. The major outline of the workshop included the process of research, research design, qualitative and quantitative sampling, primary and secondary data collection, analysis and interpretation. Dr. Chansarkar shared valuable insights on how to zero in on a viable research topic, create a research proposal and areas which promise opportunities for research in business and management. Industrial Visit: All the specialization students from Sem III have gone for a local industrial visit. The details are as follows: HR Hebbar Chemicals, Manufacturing Company Finance BSE Operations Hebbar Chemicals, Manufacturing Company Marketing Retailers Association Meet at Goa. The Principal Prof. Seema Shah spoke on the importance and need for effective communication with parents since all faculty need to have this skill while interacting with students parents.

The session started by introduction of all the participants since many participants were newly joined faculty.

The next part was the Role play in which two groups of participants was made. One group was asked to show a positive outlook about their wards bad performance and the other group was asked to show a negative outlook. After this each one was asked to comment on the outlooks of both the groups. Positive points about each groups was highlighted by Prof. Kavita.

Shouldering societal responsibilities: NSS & VSS Activities

LITERACY WEEK: The first event of the NSS committee was the celebration of International Literacy Week. It was a three day program wherein on 15 September Poetry and Poster competition on the theme of Literacy was held. On 16 September a game Discover VIT, Discover Yourself was arranged where groups of 4 students could participate on the theme of Literacy. On 20 of September, a rally was organized in Sangam Nagar for Literacy awareness. The sole motive of the rally was to reach to the masses so that the message of education reaches every strata of the society. RRC ORIENTATION SEMINAR: RRC-Red Ribbon Club is a club which works on creating HIV/AIDS awareness. The orientation was aimed at making people understand the working of the RRC and to create a strong base of RRC members in order to pass on the valuable message of Prevention is the only cure as far as HIV/AIDS is concerned. The senior NSS volunteers gave presentation regarding AIDS. RRC membership drive was organized for students who were genuinely interested to become a member of RRC and thus play a vital role in passing on important message regarding AIDS. The RRC club currently comprises around 200 members. Vidyalankar Service Scheme Along with the NSS (National Service Scheme) unit, VIT also has VSS ( Vidyalankar Service Scheme) unit which also does social work, the recent activity being CAMPUS CLEANING activity which the NSS and VSS unit had carried out in the college. This activity included VSS and NSS volunteers visiting the classrooms during the break and urging students to maintain hygiene since VIT is the second home for the students and studying in a clean environments is the right of every students and also every students responsibility. For this activity, the popular portal Vidyalankarlive was also used as a medium to spread the message of cleanliness throughout the college people.

They came, they learnt, they conquered. A group of 700-odd Mumbaikars, who were part of the first Teach India batch in the city, did just that. Recently a convocation ceremony was held for the batch of 120 volunteers and 786 students, or learners, for accomplishing their goal - learning to converse confidently in English. The Times Group launched Teach India as an initiative to teach spoken English to the underprivileged youth. British Council was brought on board to design the curriculum and train the volunteers and teachers. The curriculum was designed keeping in mind the present language levels of the target segment and the spoken English requirements of potential employers. "In a survey in Delhi, we found that there was a lot of potential in the students but their means of communicating the same were poor," said Rustom Mody from the British Council, who designed the curriculum.

Roadmap for the next quarter from the Principals desk
We are giving 100% focus to the semester exams and ways to improve upon the result. The study circle will be an important aspect of the next quarter. The toppers will help their peers and in this way the we can increase the success rate in the university exams. This year we had seven University toppers. Our goal would be to increase the number of toppers and reach greater heights. After all, there should be no limit on the number of toppers VIT produces! Students like Neil Dalvi and Arvind have brought us international fame. Students should strive to achieve what they have achieved, and make a name for themselves. The TEs and SEs will prepare a vision statement with the help of MMS mentors. Each MMS student will assist and mentor 5 TE and SE students. Their personal vision statement will guide their life, provide the direction necessary to guide the course of their days and the choices they make about their career. It is the light shining in the darkness toward which they will turn to, to find their way. Their personal vision statement will illuminate their way. To increase the involvement of students in research, we will promote new ideas and projects. Students should indulge in activities which will help them stand out. Technical growth and hobby growth, both are necessary.

We have 30 committees this year with their goals and scope revised, and activity calendars prepared. The activities have kicked off. The Student Council has been appointed and has sprung into action. Placement discussions are in full swing thanks to the NASSCOM directive. Infosys, HCL, L&T etc. have finished their placement rounds. An Alumni meeting was held which gave us positive inputs.We plan on increasing the number of placements in core companies.
