Abstract:Thisdocumentexplainstheprocedureofdialingandestablishingacommunicationsbetweenalocal PC running VersaPRO software and a remotely located GE Fanuc 9030 Programmable Controller via a pair of SixnetIndustrialModems. The 9030 Programmable Controller can be controlled remotely through standard phone lines using Sixnet IndustrialModems.The9030ProgrammableControllercanbeprogrammedthroughaphoneconnection. ConfiguringVersaPROHardwareandSoftware: Theportparametersofthe9030shouldbeleftatVersaPROdefaults.TheRS485andRS232SNPportsshould haveBaudRate,DataBits,ParityandStopBitssetto19200,8,Odd,1respectively(SeeScreenShot3).
ScreenShot3 To communicate successfully, the Connection setup in VersaPRO must be configured properly. Go to Tools CommunicationSetupintheCommunicationsConfigurationUtilitywindow.ClickonNewtocreate anewport.Typeanyname(COMPort4inthiscase)inthenameboxandselectSNP_SERIAL.LeavethePort Settingsattheprogramdefaultssotheymatchthecommunicationsettingsofthe9030PLC(SeeScreenShot 5). To complete the connection setup, a new device must be created as well. In the Communication ConfigurationUtilitywindowgototheDevicestabandclickontheNewbutton.Typetheuserdefined devicenameintheDeviceNamefield(GE9030inthiscase).Select9030fromtheDeviceModeldropdown list,andComport4intheDefaultPortdropdownlist(SeeScreenShot6).

ConfiguringtheIndustrialModems: VTMODEM1ConnecttheVTMODEM1tothePCviaastraightthrufemaletomaleserialcable.The preconfigured VTMODEM Wizard setup file (GE9030_MDM_1.6ms) is on the latest Sixnet CD and website(www.sixnetio.com).Thepreconfiguredsetupfilecanbeloadedtothemodembyclickingon theOpenConfigurationFilebuttoninthefirstwindowoftheVTMODEMSetupWizardandselecting thefilespecifiedabove.GotothelastwindowinthewizardandclickontheWriteconfigurationtothe Modem button. Or the modem can be configured manually. To configure the modem manually perform the following steps: Open the VTMODEM Setup Wizard and select VTMODEM1 (Industrial Modem) in the Read Configuration window. Click Next. Select the COM port the VTMODEM1 is connectedtoonthecomputer,NoneintheFlowControldropdownlist,and19200,Odd,8,1inthe baudrate,Parity,DatabitsandStopbitfieldsrespectively(SeeScreenShot7).ClicktheNextbutton.In theModemParameterswindowselectNoneforFlowControl,andsetthefixedspeedto19200in the Modem to Modem Speed box. Leave the rest of the modem parameters at their defaults (See Screen Shot 8). Go to the last window in the wizard and click on the Write Configuration to the Modembutton.

ScreenShot8 VTMODEM2ConfiguretheVTMODEM2thesameastheVTMODEM1,orusetheconfigurationfile (GE9030_MDM_2.6ms). To enable the SelfDialing feature in the VTMODEM2, go to the SelfDial Parameters window and select the Enable SelfDial check box. Enter the phone number the VT MODEM2istodialintheFirstPhone#field.Inthisexample,phonenumber24wasused(SeeScreen Shot9).Theselectionsofotherfeaturesinthisfieldareoptional.GothelastwindowoftheVTMODEM SetupWizardandwritetheconfigurationtothemodem.

VTMODEM3ConfiguretheVTMODEM3thesameastheVTMODEM1,orusetheconfigurationfile (GE9030_MDM_3.6ms).Toenablethe4wireRS485portontheVTMODEM3forusewiththe485SNP portonthe9030PLCselectthe4WireRS485HalfDuplexmodemontheRS422/485Parameters window of the VTMODEM Setup Wizard. Sixnet recommends using termination on each end of the RS485 network. Check the End Station on Network (Termination Recommended) check box (See ScreenShot10).ConfiguretheDIPswitchesasshownintheVTMODEMSetupWizard,andWritethe configurationtothemodem.

ConnectingtheHardware: Phone Connections The two modems were connected to an internal analog phone system through theirLineRJ11jacksusingstandardRJ11telephonecable. ConnectingthemodemstothedevicesConnecttheVTMODEM1tothecomputerscommunication port(COM4usedinthistest)viatheVTCABLEMDM.Useanullmodemcableasspecifiedonpage1to connecttheVTMODEM2totheHornerElectricInc.SNPtoRS232converterconnectedtotheSNPport onthe9030. Optional replacement of the VTMODEM2: Use the DB15 485 Cable (MaletoOpen end) cable to connecttheVTMODEM3totheSNPRS485portofthe9030PLC. EstablishingtheconnectionusingHyperTerminal: To establish remote communication between the PLC and VersaPRO software, a dialup connection must be initiatedbytheVTMODEM1.ThewindowsprogramHyperTerminalwasusedtodothis. StartHyperTerminal,andenteraname(InthiscasethenameisGE90_30).IntheConnectTodropdownlist select the COM port that the VTMODEM1 is connected to on your PC (in this case COM 4). In the COM 4 Propertieswindow,configurethebaudratefor19200with8databits,OddParity,and1stopbit(SeeScreen Shots11and12).

InHyperTerminalsmainwindow,issueanATcommandtoverifythatthePCandModemarecommunicating. TheModemshouldsendbackanOK.ThenissueanATDT#command,where#representsthephonenumber oftheVTMODEM2connectedtothePLC.Whenthemodemsconnect,HyperTerminalwilldisplayaConnect 19200message(SeeScreenShot13).SavethesessionandcloseHyperTerminalcompletely. (Note:ThephoneconnectionshouldremainintactafterHyperTerminalisclosed.Ifitdoesnot,thenruntheVT MODEM Setup Wizard and open the configuration file for the VTMODEM1. Go to the Modem Parameters window,andensurethattheIgnoreDTRboxischecked.Thengotothelastscreenandwritetheconfiguration tothemodem.) OpentheprojectassociatedwiththeGE90_30intheVersaPROsoftware.ClickontheConnectbuttonorgoto PLC>connecttoinitiatecommunicationsbetweentheGE90_30andtheVersaPROsoftware.IntheConnect windowselectSNPSerialintheDeviceScreenbox Todisconnectthephoneconnection,openthesavedsessionofHyperTerminal.Type+++(threeplussigns), waitforthe modem tosendanOK. TypeATH, andthenpresstheEnter button.Whenthemodemsends backanOK,themodemshavedisconnected(SeeScreenShot14).

EstablishingaconnectionusingtheSelfDialingfeature: Toestablishremotecommunicationbetween the PLCandVersaPROsoftwareusingthe SelfDialingfeature,a dialup connection must be initiated by the remote VTMODEM2. The feature is initiated by activating a discreteinputtotheFromPLCinputontheVTMODEM2.Toverifythattheconnectionisestablishedandthe IDmessageissentsuccessfully,useHyperTerminaltomonitortheincomingdataatthedestinationmodem.In thiscase,theVTMODEM1wasusedastheansweringmodem.Topreparefortheconnection,startWindows HyperTerminal(seeprevioussection).ToinitiatetheSelfDialingsequence,applyacontinuoussupplyof1030 VDCtotheFromPLCinputontheVTMODEM2.WhentheSelfDialingfeatureisenabled,thePowerLEDon the modem will blink rapidly. After 20 seconds or so, you should see the following messages in your HyperTerminalwindow:Ring,Connect19200(SeeScreenShot15).Tohanguptheconnection,disconnectthe 1030VDContheFromPLCinputonthemodem,andthemodemwillhangupautomatically.
