TECH (MECHANICAL & AUTOMATION ENGINEERING) END TERM (III SEMESTER) EXAMINATION NOVEMBER 2011 BTM-302 TIME: 3 Hrs SECTION-A Note : Attempt any five questions. Each question carries 06 marks Q.1 Derive the relation between E and G. Q.2 A steel tube of 30 mm external diameter and 20 mm internal diameter encloses a copper rod of 15 mm diameter. The ends are rigidly joined. The temperature of whole assembly is raised by 1900C. ES=2.1 x 105 N/mm2 EC =1.0x105 N/mm2 S=11x 10-6 /0C C=18x10-6/ 0C. Calculate stress in the rod and the tube. Q.3 A point in a strained element consists of normal stresses of 200N/mm2 (Tensile) and 100N/mm2 (Tensile) on two mutually perpendicular planes, together with a shear stress of 50N/mm2 . With the help of of Mohrs circle, determine the principal planes and principal stresses and maximum shear stress. Q.4 Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for beam shown in the figure below. Q.5 Find the maximum torsion stress in shaft AC (refer the figure). Assume the Diameter of AC is 15 mm.

Q.7 Define Neutral axis. Sketch the bending stress distribution across the cross section of a rectangular beam section 230 400 m subjected to 60 KNm moment. Q.8 The ends of a thin cylinder 180 mm internal diameter and wall thickness 3.0 mm are closed by rigid plates and it is then filled with a liquid. When an axial compressive force of 33.6 kN is applied to the cylinder, the pressure of the liquid rises by 72 kN/m2. Take E = 2 X 105 N/mm2, = 0.3. Find the bulk modulus of the liquid. Q.9 A simply supported beam AB carries a triangularly distributed load as shown in the fig. Find the equation of the deflection curve referred to the coordinate axes x and y as shown. Also determine the maximum deflection d.

Q.10 (a) A slender column is built in at one end and an eccentric load is applied at the free end. Workings from first principles find the expression for the maximum length of column such that the deflection of free end does not exceed the eccentricity of loading. [14marks]

Q.1 Derive the relation between modulus of elasticity and bulk modulus. [6 marks] Q.2 Find the Poissons ratio and Bulk modulus of a material whose modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa and modulus of rigidity is 80 GPa. A 2 m long rod of 40 mm dia. made with the same material is stretched by 2.5 mm under some axial load. Find the lateral contraction. [6 marks] Q.3 Determine: a) The principal planes. b) The principal stresses. c) The maximum shear stress and the corresponding normal stress. [6 marks]

Q.5 Find the relative rotation of section B-B with respect to section A-A of the solid elastic shaft as shown in the figure when a constant torque T is being transmitted through it. The polar moment of inertia of the cross-sectional area J is constant. [6 marks]

Q.6 A cylindrical shell 3m long and 50cm in diameter and 1.25 cm thick is at atmospheric pressure. What would be its dimension when it is subjected to internal pressure of 2 N/mm2 E=200 GN/m2 and m =4. [6 marks]

Q.7 Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the beam due to the uniform load.

Q.8 Determine the equation of the deflection curve for a cantilever beam AB subjected to a uniform load of intensity q. Also determine the angle of rotation and deflection at the free end. Beam has constant EI.

Q.9 A steel tube having 88mm outer diameter, 66mm inner diameter and 2.8 m long is used as a strut with both ends hinged. The load is parallel to the axis of the strut but is eccentric. Find the maximum value of eccentricity so that crippling load on strut is 60 percent of the Eulers crippling load. Take E=210GN/m2, and yield strength=320MN/m2 SECTION-C Note: Question is compulsory and of 20 marks [20 Marks]

Q.10 (a) A hollow cylinder has an external diameter of 250mm and the thickness of the wall is 50mm. The cylinder is subjected to an internal fluid pressure of 35MPa and external pressure of 3.5MPa. Calculate the minimum and maximum circumferential stresses and plot the variation of the same across the wall thickness. [10 marks] (b) What are the assumptions made in the Eulers theory? What are the limitations of this theory? [10 marks]

Q.1 A weight of 20 tonnes is supported by three pillars, each 500mm2 in x-section. The central pillar is of steel and the other ones are of copper. The pillars are so adjusted that at a temperature of 150c each carries equal loads. Find the stress in each pillar at 1150c. Take Es=2.0x105 N/mm2; Ec= 0.8x105 N/mm2 s=12x10-6/0c; c=18.5x10-6/0c. [6 marks] Q.2 A steel rod circular in section tapers from 2cm diameter to 1cm diameter in a length of 60cm. Find how much its length will increase under a tensile force of 20 KN. Take E=2x105N/mm2 . Q.4 What is meant by pure bending? What are the assumptions made in simple theory of bending? [6 marks] Q.5 Determine the maximum deflection in a simply supported beam of length L carrying a concentrated load P at midspan. [6 marks]

Q.6 Find the maximum torque that can be applied to a shaft of 100mm diameter. The

Q.7 A hollow cylinder cast iron column of 150mm external diameter and 15mm thickness, 3m long is hinged at one end and fixed at the other. Find (a) the ratio of the Eulers and Rankines load (b) for what length, the critical load by Eulers and Rankines load will be equal? [10 marks] Take E=8x104N/mm2, fC=550N/mm2, =1/1600 Q.8 A cantilever 2 metre long carries a point load of 20KN at the free end and 30KN at the middle. Q.10 (a) A cantilever beam, 50 mm wide by 150 mm high and 6 m long, carries a load that
varies uniformly from zero at the free end to 1000 N/m at the wall. (a) Compute the magnitude and location of the maximum flexural stress. (b) Determine the type and magnitude of the stress in a fiber 20 mm from the top of the beam at a section 2 m from the free end. [10marks]

(b) For the state of plane stress given as XX=100MPa (Tensile), YY =60MPa (compressive)
and YX=50MPa determine the principal planes, the principal stresses and the maximum

shear stress. Also find the stress components on the element after it is rotated by 20 counter clockwise. [10 marks]
