Welcome!
The staff at Edmonton Flying Club are proud to introduce to you the new and updated monthly newsletter, SLIPSTREAM! This monthly newsletter was a big part of EFC in the earlier days which includes club updates, aviation news, accomplishments and upcoming events. Our goal is to try and make the club more like it used to be with staff and member events, guest speakers etc. We would love to see more of our members around the club and being a part of EFCs daily happenings.

Meet EFCs Instructors

Dean BraithwaiteGeneral Manager/Class 1/Multi/IFR My first training flight was in 2001 and I have been a student of aviation ever since. I have over 3000 hours of instructor time at the flying club and I am a Class 1 instructor and a Pilot Examiner for Transport Canada. This past December my career reached a new milestone when I completed my Citation V training and flew a jet for the first time. While life at FL410 is pretty cool, I'm always happy to be at the club working with new instructors and students. Kristen SorokaChief Flight Instructor & Multi/IFR After completing all her licenses and ratings at EFC, Kristen began instructing in 2007. A graduate of the Aviation Pilot Training program from NAIT in 2006, she happily applies what she has learnt to other students and instructors. She is enjoying her time as CFI and is looking forward to a bright future for EFC. Sophia HeislerAssistant Chief Flight InstructorSophia is originally from the Crowsnest Pass and came to EFC in February 2009 after working for the Calgary Flying Club for her first year of instructing after graduating from the Mount Royal Aviation program in 2007. Sophia left EFC for just under a year while she travelled to Australia and New Zealand but has been happily back since June 2011 and is looking forward to organizing and contributing to many upcoming events! Niall TymkowClass 4 Niall has been an instructor at EFC since 2009. Niall originally started flying in 2004 and over the years took all of his licenses and ratings at the club. Niall comes from a sport and fitness background and has a Bachelor of Physical Education Degree from the U of A. Niall looks forward to along career in aviation. Jase GordonClass 3 & Multi/IFR Jase began his aviation career as an AME, where he worked for 5 years with a few different operations in western Canada. During this time he completed his CPL, multi and IFR ratings. He currently has 1200 hrs and has been working with the team at EFC for just over 1 year. Travis ScobieClass 4 A native of North-East Edmonton, Travis has been a member at the flying club since late 2007. Always interested in aviation, Travis didnt realize flying was a feasible endeavor for the average person until a family member bought him the gift of ground school at EFC for his birthday. From then on he was hooked quitting his day job to fly full time and work as a dispatcher at the club eventually becoming an instructor. Dion BeierClass 4 Dion started his training in 1994 flying advanced ultra-lights. He began his PPL training in 1995 and graduated from Mount Royal College in 1999 with a CPL, multi and multi/IFR rating. In 2000 he went to Africa to fly bush planes, returning after 5 months. After that, he lived in Thompson, MB working on the ramp for waiting for a potential job with Skyward, they closed their doors and he moved to Fort McMurray and worked for Borealis on the ramp. He then flew skydivers from 2009 until getting hired as an instructor in 2011 at EFC. Dion enjoys instructing very much. In the winter of 2001 he also began a contract job with Infinity Flight Services flying a B100. Dion also has a 12 year old daughter. Leroy LafreniereClass 4 Leroy moved to Edmonton ten years ago from a small town north of Edmonton to pursue his goal to become a teacher. Graduating with a B Sc. in Biology and Environmental Sciences in 2006, Leroy started his flight training at the Edmonton Flight College. After obtaining his Commercial Pilot License in 2010 with the college, he made the decision to combine all of his passions; education, science, and flight. After completion of the Flight Instructor Rating with EFC in 2011, he is eager to share his knowledge with other aviation enthusiasts.

EFC Pub NightJanuary 27, 2012

The first of many monthly EFC pub nights! Yes, its true! We are starting to have a members and staff pub night right here in the EFC lounge in hopes of getting more members out and about to get the club atmosphere stronger! Itll give members a chance to get to know the fantastic staff that you see during daily operations and will give staff a chance to get to know the members more personally. By introducing more members to one another we hope to encourage group cross country flights and of course give your significant others a break from your airplane chat. You can talk as much as you like to all members about flying, as we all love it! The first of 2012 is going to be January 27 from 1800-2100 upstairs in the EFC lounge. Hope to see you there!!

Calling All Speakers!

Aviation related speakers and rants are going to start at EFC once a month. We are looking for members and guests who are interested in putting on a presentation or demonstration for our members. So far we are planning a presentation from a Transportation Safety Board employee, as well as an ATC representative. Dates will come out shortly about our first speaker night! Dont hesitate to inform us if you know of anyone who would be a great speaker or if you yourself would like to talk. We are also planning an IFR rant night as well as a possible Near Miss night so stay tuned!

FBO Update
The EFC FBO has been updated to help us keep safety in mind. As of December 20th 2011, the FBO now has a Safety First tab that allows students and staff to comment on any safety issues they may have. This concern can be made anonymously if so desired. We are hoping this will encourage more members to speak up about any issues they may have and help our club to become the safest place around.

Suggestions?
You can contact Sophia Heisler at sophia@edmontonflyingclub.com or Kristen Soroka cfi@edmontonflyingclub.com with any suggestions you may have.
