Sometimes, an adolescents school performance can be limited by emotional and behavioral difficulties, including impulsive behaviors, emotional upsets, alcohol or drug use, and skipping school. The Comprehensive Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education Service (CARES) combines a small-scale educational environment, daily therapy groups, and intensive psychiatric treatment focused on improving and enhancing each students personal and academic skills.
THE CARES PROGRAM
The Comprehensive Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education Service (CARES) is a safe and therapeutic school environment for New York City public high school students whose previous school performance has been limited by emotional and behavioral difficulties. Our service provides educational and therapeutic components, including substance abuse treatment for students who use drugs or alcohol. CARES has two tracks: Adolescent Alternative Day Program (AADP): designed to help students whose school performance has been affected most by problems with social skills, anxiety, and/or mood changes. Comprehensive Addiction Program for Adolescents (CAPA): offers additional services for students seeking recovery from substance issues. CAPA uses a harm-reduction model to help students reduce, and ultimately abstain from substance use. CARES is a part of the Child and Family Institute at St. Lukes Hospital and Roosevelt Hospital. The New York City Department of Education along with The Addiction Institute of New York work collaboratively with CARES to provide the necessary resources and a talented group of teachers and clinical staff. We create a friendly environment and all rules and policies of the program are strictly enforced to maintain a safe and respectful community that helps our students succeed. Physical and verbal aggression, provocative behavior, and excessive truancy are not tolerated. Our teachers and clinical staff work hard to provide each student with the education, life-skills training, and individually focused therapies that each student needs to reach their goals.

CARES provides multidisciplinary therapeutic services designed to address the specific problems that have interfered with each individuals academic, social, and emotional success in the past. A major component of CARES groups and milieu therapies is based on the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a highly effective treatment method for teenagers who wish to change from dangerous or self-defeating behavior patterns to more successful responses to stress. The CARES clinical staff works together as a team to make an individual treatment plan for each student, which includes: Individual Therapy (1x/week) Group Therapy (5 days/week) Psychopharmacology / Medication Management Family Therapy Collateral Sessions Milieu Therapy Community Meetings Complementary Services (AA, NA, Case Management, Waiver, etc)

OUR STUDENTS Our students at CARES are adolescents whose previous school performance has been limited by emotional and behavioral difficulties, including alcohol or drug problems. Referred teens must have successfully completed eighth grade and be eligible to work toward their high school diploma or GED. We expect that the students referred to CARES will be motivated to accept help for their academic and personal problems so they can successfully achieve their academic, emotional, and social goals. All students are expected to follow our policies of no physical or verbal aggression, provocative behavior, and excessive truancy. Students who do not abide by these policies will be transferred out of CARES and referred to alternative academic and clinical services.

There is only one place that has provided me with the services that I need. CARES treatment programs have helped me to deal with difficult situations, through learning the skills of life. Having been in this program has helped me grow in various aspects of my life including family, peer relationships, and belief in myself. I firmly believe that this country needs more programs like CARES to be established and developed. It would strengthen our country and give greater hope to more teens like us. -- Joshua, CARES Alumni
ENROLLMENT GUIDELINES CARES aims to help students to think productively about their problems and take responsibility for working hard on solutions. We help students make progress toward overcoming their problems and achieving their academic and social goals. CARES is not designed to accommodate a student who decides that they no longer want to participate in their treatment plans. Therefore, just as regular attendance and non-violence are required for students to stay at CARES, treatment participation is also required. Students who are unable to commit to their academic and treatment recommendations may be asked to leave the program. At these times, students will be provided with referrals to alternative educational and clinical settings.

EDUCATION AT CARES
We offer a fully integrated academic experience through the New York City Department of Educations Re-Start Division. Students earn a Regents Diploma or a Generalized Equivalency Diploma (GED), depending on their academic progress and goals.
