NEWS BY THE ART SENSE WORKING GROUPS

IN THIS ISSUE

Dear Team
Firstly I would like to take opportunity to acknowledge Elders, Traditional Owners the Island communities Sense currently operates in. this the and Art The initial Art Sense team is still on deck after nearly 6 months incorporating all 36 staff from Coconut, Hammond, Mabuiag, Masig, Murray, Saibai, Thursday, Warraber and Yam Islands. Given the complexities of setting up a new program this large it makes me proud personally that the entire team is still together. Id like to thank the Art Sense team for accepting Vanessa Goggin in taking over the Art Sense management role. By all reports there is a strong connection between all the teams and Vanessa.

2012 is looking very encouraging in many ways; tailored training specific to each Art Sense staff member has been endorsed by CEA and will be rolled out in the first half of next year. With the recent commencement of a CEA Community Development Officer a more streamlined material supply and mentoring process has been implemented for the arts and crafts working groups.

The above featured picture was taken at the Art Sense staff induction held on Thursday Island. Please note Murray Island staff were unable to attend are not pictured.

Art Sense is a business that set out to empower the Torres Strait Working Groups in terms of making localised decisions on working group operations and sustainability in the art sector. The future of the Arts Engagement Strategy centers on our staffs constructive feedback, loyalty and commitment. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Tim Cram

FOCUS ON: Masig Island

In this issue we take a close look at Masig Island. Each Edition will Focus On a different island to allow a snap shot of the personal achievements and activities which are being conducted.

Over the past few weeks Kirriri Arts and Craft Art Sense Hammond Island have been consulting with the Hammond Island Community Councilor, CEA Community Development Officer, and CEA Hammond Island Supervisor and Project Officer. We have been working together discussing what projects we can do that may draw interest in the community. We are currently working on a mural at the local school Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Hammond Island Campus. This project was put forward to us by the school teacher and we gladly accepted. We saw this as an opportunity to get the children involved by helping with the painting. The children very much enjoyed this activity and the mural is coming along very nicely. All materials for this project were supplied by the school and at this stage the mural is half way completed. Hopeful during the school break whistle the teachers and children
