The vice-president in charge of production was coming in from New York on an inspection tour of the southeastern plant. and Mike wanted everything to go right. His future with the corporation depended on it. For the third time he called in Steve to talk with him. Steve had better understand this time that he was really in trouble. Twelve years with the corporation gave him seniority, and the union would be difficult to handle if he fired Steve.Mike had to be sure Steve was impressed with the seriousness of the situation. When the secretary buzzed Mike that Steve was in the waiting room. Mike said, Let him cool his heels. Fifteen minutes later he asked Steve to come in the office. Mike did not raise his head and greet Steve, nor did he rise to shake hands as he would normally have done. Steve stood at his desk several moments before Mike looked up and said, Sit down The telephone rang, and Mike talked five minutes before putting down the receiver. He then turned to Steve, folded his arms, leaned back, and said, Well, tell me about this one. Steve was upset by the extremely negative attitude he felt from Mike. He dropped his eyes. Lifted his hands in a hopeless gesture, and said, Well, what can you do with some of these guys who think they know everything? Questions 1. 2. 3.
