1 COMM 471 FINAL PAPER/CLASS PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT SPRING 2012 For your final paper in the class you

will submit a 7-12 page (12 point font, double-spaced, Times New Roman) paper on an emerging/converging technology of your choice. While everyone will address their topic in different ways, in order to receive a successful grade your paper should: Provide a detailed background and history of the technology, including its use in any possible previous iterations of its development (example: how viewing TV programs on a portable device is/was/has been potentially affected by viewing habits on a TV set at home). Regard historical and technical development, finding comparable current or past technology is a good idea. Include the economic, political, social, and cultural factors that influenced the technologys acceptance or decline. Consider the content produced and consumed for the technology and discuss how it has possibly changed in both material and technical ways. Use theories/concepts/predictions/evidence from course readings and discussions as well as sources found on your own (but dont cite any course lectures in your paper). Use questions and feedback from your in-class presentation to finalize your paper. Adhere to standard academic paper writing guidelines, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Citations in your paper and in your reference section must be in APA format

As if that were not enough You will also present your paper to the class during the last week of the semester. While everyone will present their topic in different ways, in order to receive a successful grade your presentation should meet the following requirements: Your presentation will be at least five minutes but no longer than seven. If you hit seven minutes you will be cut off. Your presentation will have some kind of visual component in order to help the class understand what your topic is about. This usually includes a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation. You will provide a handout for the class. The handout must be distributed in digital form but must also be available for download and/or hard copy. In order for students and faculty to have the option of downloading and printing your handout, you must turn in your material before your

2 scheduled presentation. Be sure to turn in a copy (digital) of the visual materials used in your presentation (PowerPoint slides, etc.). Expect questions from the class at the end of your presentation and be ready to answer them. Use the feedback you receive from your presentation to finalize your paper. IMPORTANT DATES AND IMPORTANT NOTES: You must submit a typed, one-page proposal for your final paper topic before you may begin working on your paper. The proposal should be as detailed as possible and contain information about the technology, why you want to explore that topic, and how you plan to complete the project. Proposals may be rejected for not having enough detailed information. Topics/technology choices will be approved on a first-come, first-serve basis. No duplicate topics will be allowed. Proposals may be submitted at any time, however the final deadline for submitting a proposal is Friday, March 2nd, at the beginning of class. If you dont have a proposal turned in by then, you will receive a zero for both the final paper and your class presentation. Course presentations will take place April 27th, April 30th, and May 1st. Signup sheets will be provided in early April. Handout materials for your presentation must be submitted through the course Twitter feed (using TwitPic, Tiny URL, etc.). Handout materials must be posted online no later than the day before your presentation (April 26th, April 29th, or April 30th, depending on when your presentation is scheduled). Students and faculty must be able to access, view, and interact with your handout materials in either digital or hard copy format on the day of your presentation. Your final paper will be due no later than the beginning of the course final exam period (8am, Friday, May 4th) although it can be turned in early with no penalty. Late papers will not be accepted and you will receive a zero for missing the final paper deadline. Additional details and instructions about the paper and the presentation will be made available during the course of the semester.
