INDUSTRY
Enterprise So ware

As a so ware company, this innovation is driven by technology. To support the 21 global R&D labs, SAP Global IT runs 6 primary datacenters and supports over 40,000 servers. Those workloads are among others split between Training & Demo environments, QA & Testing, Development, and business functions. Each instance of the SAP application represents a complex environment. Most of the internal customers of SAP Global IT require fresh instances of the so ware on a regular basis, whether to support new training classes every week or new development and testing needs. The task of provisioning at this scale and speed to meet the needs of the business is non-trivial from an infrastructure perspective. With such an operational challenge comes a nancial one as well. SAP Global IT was given a mandate to stabilize and lower costs of delivering IT. No additional investments were to be made in new datacenters, and transparency of costs to the business was paramount.

The path forward was clear. In order to meet the growing needs of the business while maintaining and lowering costs, SAP Global IT needed to massively consolidate and virtualize their underlying infrastructure, and dramatically automate their delivery of services. SAP Global IT needed to move from delivering servers or even virtual machines to delivering complete infrastructure services (IaaS). SAP Global IT is building its new internal C3 environment: the Corporate Compute Cloud (internal C project). BUILDING THE CLOUD SAP began by identifying their goal with the C environment. It will be an integrated cloud environment supporting: Heterogeneous underlying infrastructure, from servers to storage, networks, and hypervisors, including both physical, x86 virtualized, and UNIX environments A service-catalog-driven self-service user portal and API for requesting and managing infrastructure self-services (IaaS) Rules-based workows for approval and delivery of cloud services Integration with existing IT processes like asset management Provisioning to external cloud providers, when appropriate To achieve this, SAP turned to BMC so ware. Meeting all the key requirements, BMCs cloud solutions enable SAP to automate their environment, from the self-service portal through the congurable workows and automated provisioning of this complex infrastructure environment. By supporting all the underlying platforms with its open, heterogeneous design BMCs solution enables SAP Global IT to create an integrated and holistic infrastructure cloud for all its users. To ensure that this cloud maintains the best practices of IT operations developed at SAP Global IT, the cloud also integrates with asset management, a centralized CMDB, and ongoing monitoring and discovery. For SAP Global IT, the cloud is a mission-critical workload, like the assembly line of a manufacturer. Operational excellence ensures its success. THE BENEFITS ARE CLEAR With the ongoing C project, SAP Global IT strives to dramatically lower the time it takes to provision a service from days to mere hours. Automation from BMC reduces the eort required to deliver these infrastructure services from 4 hours of administrative time per deployment to absolutely none. Automation had a second benet, as well that of operational excellence. Standardized processes, consistent ongoing management, and structured workows ensure that the cloud environment delivers consistent service to its users. Finally, BMCs solutions helped SAP Global IT achieve transparency in the cloud, exposing usage statistics to the development, test and training users and ensuring each can be charged according to their consumption.

instances of SAP Global IT delivers completeunits rapidly the SAP environment to internal SAP and on an ongoing basis. BMC solutions provide us with the ability to provision, congure, deliver, and retire these instances from our private cloud at the pace required by the business.

THE FUTURE OF C3 SAP Global IT will continue to expand and shape its internal cloud environment to meet the changing and growing demands of its internal business. With plans to utilize external resources, as well as private cloud resources to deliver dierent types of infrastructure cloud services, SAP Global IT will be able to control costs while increasing quality of service. Plans include: More nuanced resource pooling and isolation Expansion of demo and training support to thousands of environments a week Broadening platform support Full compliance integration to support more critical workloads. Together with BMC, SAP Global IT will build a exible, scalable, global cloud environment to support its global enterprise so ware business.
