Key Facts & Figures

Head-to-head This is the 51st Test match between New Zealand and France. New Zealand have won 37, France 12 and there has been one draw. New Zealand have won 20 of the 24 Tests played in New Zealand. France are one of only two teams (South Africa is the other) to have beaten the All Blacks in New Zealand in the past eight years. It is their sixth Rugby World Cup meeting, which sets a record for RWC match-ups. This will be the third time that two teams have met twice at one RWC. At RWC 2007, South Africa beat England 36-0 in the pool phase and again 15-6 in the final while Argentina beat France 17-12 in the pool phase and 34-10 in the bronze final. New Zealand and France have alternated wins in their RWC encounters, with the All Blacks winning the 1987 final, Les Bleus winning their 1999 semi-final, New Zealand winning the 2003 bronze final, France winning the 2007 quarter-final and the All Blacks winning the 2011 pool-phase match. France came from behind at half-time in both the matches they won. They have never led New Zealand at half-time in a RWC match. New Zealand have won the past three Tests between the two. Their best winning streak against France is eight, recorded in the 1960s. Frances best winning streak against New Zealand is three matches, in 1994 and 1995, which included consecutive victories in New Zealand and the All Blacks last loss at Eden Park. Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu and Richie McCaw will each play their 11th Test against France. Sean Fitzpatrick and John Kirwan (12) are the only All Blacks with more Tests against Les Bleus. Ali Williams will also play his 11th Test against France if he comes on as a replacement. Mealamu and McCaw can both win their 10th Test against France, which would equal Gary Whettons New Zealand record. Englands Jason Leonard is the only player from any nation to have won more Tests (12) against France. Thirteen of Frances starting line-up played in the RWC 2011 pool match against New Zealand, with 11 of the 13 starting that match. The two players who did not play on 24 September are tighthead prop Nicolas Mas and left wing Alexis Palisson, who both missed the match because of injury. Four of Frances replacements for this match played in the 2011 pool match, with Dimitri Szarzewski and Damien Traille starting and Fabien Barcella and Franois Trinh-Duc coming on as replacements. Five of the starting XV also played in Frances RWC 2007 quarter-final defeat of the All Blacks at Cardiff. Vincent Clerc, Julien Bonnaire and Thierry Dusautoir all started in the 20-18 victory while Imanol Harinordoquy and Jean-Baptiste Poux came on as replacements. Replacements Dimitri Szarzewski and Damien Traille also played in 2007, Traille starting the match at full back and Szarzewski coming off the bench. There are three France players in the match-day 22 for this Sundays final who played in the RWC 2003 third-place play-off against the All Blacks. Jean-Baptiste Poux, Dimitri Yachvili and Damien Traille all started that match, which France lost 40-13. Thirteen of New Zealands starting XV and 19 of their match-day 22 played in the All Blacks last match against Les Bleus, their 37-17 RWC 2011 pool-phase victory. The only changes are Kieran Read at number 8 instead of Adam Thomson, Aaron Cruden at fly half in place of the injured Dan Carter and Stephen Donald on the bench rather than Colin Slade. Four of the All Blacks 22 played in the RWC 2007 quarter-final loss to the French. Tony Woodcock, Richie McCaw and replacement Ali Williams all started that match while replacement hooker Andrew Hore came off the bench. There are also four New Zealand survivors from the RWC 2003 encounter between the two teams, the third-place play-off that New Zealand won 40-13. Mealamu, Williams and McCaw started that match while Brad Thorn came on as a replacement. France Third in the IRB World Rankings having gained two places after their semi-final win against Wales. France were the last northern hemisphere team to be ranked in the top three, in June 2010. Playing in a record-equalling third RWC final. England and Australia have played in three finals and New Zealand are also appearing in their third at RWC 2011. The first team to reach the RWC final after two defeats in the pool phase. Reached the RWC semi-finals for the fifth consecutive time, equalling the record set by New Zealand from 1987 to 2003, which was ended by France in 2007. Have lost two RWC finals, the same as England, who are the only other team to have lost more than one. Have waited 12 years since their last RWC final appearance. They also waited 12 years between their first two (1987, 1999). The only team among the 20 at RWC 2011 who can improve on their previous best RWC finish. Several teams have equalled their best finish and New Zealand and Wales can join them. Scored 121 penalty goals at all RWCs, equal highest with England.

New Zealand Ranked No.1 in the world, a position they have held for more time than all other nations combined. Have scored 2004 RWC points, 602 more than second-placed Australia. Have scored 271 RWC tries, 92 more than second-placed Australia. Have won 36 RWC matches, four more than second-placed Australia. Have scored more tries than their opposition in 36 of their 42 RWC matches, eight more than next-best Australia. The All Blacks have won all 36 of those matches and have lost the remaining six matches where they scored as many or fewer tries than their opposition. Playing in a record-equalling third RWC final. England and Australia have played three finals and France are also appearing in their third at RWC 2011. The only team to finish first in their pool at every RWC. One of four teams (along with England, France and Australia) to have progressed to the quarter-finals at every RWC. The All Blacks and France share the honour of having progressed to the most semi-finals (5). The All Blacks and France are the only teams to have lost multiple RWC semi-finals. Have lost two knockout matches after leading at half-time, both against France. Australia are the only other team to have done it more than once (both losses were against England). New Zealand have scored at least one try in their past 95 Tests and in 101 of the 102 Tests coached by Graham Henry. Graham Henry coaches a team in a Rugby World Cup match for the 16th time, extending his record. Henry coached Wales in their four matches at RWC 1999 and the All Blacks in their five matches at RWC 2007 and their seven at RWC 2011. Graham Henry is the only person to coach a top-tier nation in 100 Tests in the professional era. His 85 per cent winning record coaching New Zealand is the best for any coach of a major nation in the professional era. His predecessor John Mitchells record of 82.1 per cent is the only other above 80 per cent. Henry also coached Wales in 34 Tests and the British and Irish Lions in three. New Zealand have lost to only South Africa, Australia and France during Henrys reign and have a winning record against all three. New Zealand have won their past 16 Test matches at home, a winning streak that goes back more than two years, to when South Africa beat them 32-29 in Hamilton on 12 September 2009. Their only better streak is the world record 30 consecutive home Test victories from 2003 to 2008. Under Graham Henry, New Zealand have lost only three home Test matches, against South Africa (twice) and France.

Key Facts & Figures

The venue Eden Park hosted five matches during RWC 1987, with New Zealand and France winning two matches each and Romania one. The final is the 11th match Eden Park is hosting at RWC 2011. It has hosted two Pool A matches, one match in each of the other three pools, two quarter-finals and both semi-finals. It will also have hosted the bronze final before this match. Eden Parks 16 RWC matches is a record, surpassing Murrayfields 14 matches across three RWCs. New Zealand have played six RWC matches at Eden Park, two at RWC 1987 and four at RWC 2011, winning all of them, each of the first five by a minimum of 20 points. Their closest match was their 20-6 victory against Australia in last weeks RWC 2011 semi-final. The All Blacks have won their past 26 Tests at Eden Park since an 18-18 draw against South Africa in August 1994. France were the last team to beat New Zealand at Eden Park, in July 1994. That match is also New Zealands only defeat at Eden Park in the past 25 years, since Australia won there in September 1986. The All Blacks have won 24 from 24 at Eden Park in the professional era (1996-2011). This will be New Zealands fifth match at Eden Park at RWC 2011, equalling Scotlands record of playing five matches at Murrayfield at RWC 1991 and again at RWC 1999. France have played 13 Tests at Eden Park, winning six of them, including two against the All Blacks. Their 46 per cent win rate at the ground is the best of any nation other than New Zealand. They have played six RWC matches at the venue. In 1987 they won a pool match against Zimbabwe and a quarter-final against Fiji and lost the final against New Zealand. In 2011 they lost their pool match against New Zealand and won their quarter-final against England and their semi-final against Wales. Seven All Blacks have played at least 10 home Tests without losing. Three of the seven are in New Zealands match-day 22 for Sundays final: Sam Whitelock (15); Ben Franks (12); and Richard Kahui (10). The line-ups (contd) Clerc is the only player in the RWC 2011 final to have played each of his teams six RWC 2011 matches from start to finish. Australian Adam Ashley-Cooper, is the only player to have played the full 80 minutes in all of their teams seven matches. Poux and Aurlien Rougerie will play their 17th RWC matches, leaving them one match short of Raphal Ibaezs France record of 18. New Zealand have named an unchanged starting XV, with the only change to their match-day 22 being flanker Adam Thomsons return from injury to replace Victor Vito on the bench. This is the third time New Zealand have had an unchanged RWC line-up. France, with seven, are the only team to have played an unchanged RWC line-up more times. The All Blacks previous two unchanged RWC line-ups were both for knockout matches: the RWC 1995 final they lost to South Africa 15-12 in extra time, and the RWC 2003 semi-final they lost 22-10 to Australia. The 709 caps earned by New Zealands starting XV is their third highest for a RWC match, falling behind the 727 of the XV that beat France in their RWC 2011 pool match and the All Blacks record of 769 earned by the side that defeated Argentina in the quarter-final. With an average age of 28 years and 26 days this is New Zealands fourth oldest RWC line-up. Their three older starting XVs were all for RWC 2011 matches: their pool-phase victories against Tonga and France, and their quarter-final win against Argentina. Brad Thorn, at 36 years and 262 days old, becomes the oldest player to play in a RWC final, surpassing the record of 36 years and 33 days set by Englands Mike Catt at RWC 2007. The oldest player to win a RWC final is Englands Jason Leonard who was 35 years and 100 days when his side defeated Australia at RWC 2003. Thorn also advances his record as the oldest All Black to play at RWC. All Blacks starters Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock, Aaron Cruden and Israel Dagg were not born when New Zealand won their only RWC title on 20 June, 1987. Richie McCaw will captain the All Blacks in a RWC match for the eighth time, breaking Reuben Thornes record. Victory on Sunday would also mean McCaw breaks Thornes New Zealand record of six RWC match wins as captain. Keven Mealamu plays his 92nd Test to equal the All Black record for most caps by a hooker held by Sean Fitzpatrick, who was the No.2 in every game of New Zealands triumphant RWC 1987 campaign. Mealamu also joins Fitzpatrick as the third-most capped All Black in history, with only McCaw (playing his 103rd Test in the final) and Mils Muliaina (100 caps) ahead of them. Brad Thorn has played every New Zealand match of RWC 2011 and having done the same in 2003 is only the second player, after Englands Lewis Moody, to have played seven matches at two RWCs. Seven other players have played every match of two RWC campaigns up to and including the final or play-off for third. Englands Martin Johnson was the last before Moody to do so, having played the maximum six matches at RWC 1995 and all seven at RWC 2003. McCaw plays his 16th RWC match, leaving Sean Fitzpatrick (17) as the only All Black with more RWC matches. Ali Williams can join McCaw on 16 if he comes on as a replacement. If Williams does come on as a replacement, his 16 RWC matches will put him equal with Frances Fabien Pelous. Englands Martin Johnson is the only second row to have played more RWC matches, with 18. If Stephen Donald comes on as a replacement on Sunday, he will become the first player to make his RWC debut in a final. McCaw has scored in eight of his 11 calendar years as an All Black. He is yet to score in 2011 and the last calendar year he failed to score in was 2003, his third as an All Black. Maa Nonu and Conrad Smith play in the centres together for the 35th time, extending their All Blacks record.

The line-ups France have kept the starting line-up that defeated England in the quarter-finals and Wales in the semi-finals. France are the second team in RWC history to go into three consecutive matches with the same starting XV. Argentina had unchanged line-ups for their RWC 2007 quarter-final and semi-final after that same XV started their last pool match, a 30-15 victory over Ireland. They lost the third match of the streak. It is Frances seventh unchanged starting line-up in RWC history, more than any other team. Five of their previous six unchanged line-ups were also for knockout matches and the first four resulted in defeats - three of them by at least 17 points. Their semi-final win against Wales last week was their first RWC knockout victory with an unchanged line-up. The 702 caps among Frances starting XV make it their third most-capped Test line-up. Their most capped line-up (737) was the side that lost 17-12 to Argentina in the pool phase of RWC 2007, and their second most-capped team (706) was the side that beat England 31-6 in the 2006 Six Nations. With an average age of 29 years and 312 days, this is Frances second oldest RWC line-up. Only the team that faced Argentina in the pool phase of RWC 2007 was older at 30 years and 288 days. Vincent Clerc and Englands Chris Ashton lead the RWC try-scoring table with six. If Clerc fails to cross the try-line in the final and Australias Adam Ashley-Cooper does not cross twice in the bronze final then the six tries for the leading try-scorers of the tournament will equal the record lows of RWC 1987 and RWC 1991. Clercs 11 tries are equal third behind the New Zealand duo Jonah Lomu (15) and Doug Howlett (13) on the RWC all-time list.

The referee Craig Joubert referees his seventh match of RWC 2011. He was already the first official to take charge of six matches at one RWC.
