Developmental Writing Study Guide for Final If you understand everything that is on the study guide, you will

do great on the final! If you do not understand everything on the study guide, please ask so that you can do great too! Diagramming You will be required to diagram sentences correctly, looking for specific parts of speech. This is exactly like the grammar quiz you took at the first half of the semester. BEWARE: READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! If you do not understand how to do this, you need to let me know before the test date. You will be tested over the following: Verb Prepositional phrases Subject Adjectives Direct Object Adverbs Here are a few sample sentences: The dog ate his food hungrily. (subject: dog; verb: ate; his: adjective; food: direct object; hungrily: adverb) The mouse scurried into the hole in the wall. (subject = mouse; verb = scurried; prepositional phrases = into the hole, in the wall; object of the preposition = hole and wall) Subject Verb Agreement: Circle the correct verb and underline the subject. Police officers (arrive or arrives) just before dawn. Secretly, Mary (watch or watches) him from a distance. Every time she goes onto the hockey field, she (makes or make)

history. Donnie (stand or stands) in line for movie tickets every Saturday night. She never (ceases or cease) to amaze me. Commas, Semicolons, and Colons Add the punctuation as needed. Writing Also, you will be required to write three small paragraphs. Your topic is your choice and your style is your choice. You can pick any of the nine styles of paragraphs that we wrote in class but the paragraphs must not resemble any paragraphs you wrote in class or credit will not be given. You will be allowed to write them on a

separate sheet of paper to transfer to your test. One style of paragraph is allowed per test. They will be worth 10 pts each. I will look for grammar, punctuation, and content correctness. Also, you will need to underline your topic sentence. I will look at your paragraphs before you take your test if you would like, but I will not correct punctuation or grammar mistakes.
