Design of sliding contact bearings, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic lubrication, composite bearings & self lubricated bearings with manufacturing methods, comparison etc. 3. Design of antifriction bearings, types, selection and specification, life calculations. 4. Design for strength, weight, rigidity, capacity, cost reliability, maintainability, production and case of assembly. 5. Optimization: Concept of design, Johnsons method, conventional versus optimum design, design constraints, optimization methods, Johnsons method, problem formulation, solving examples on normal specification (preferably use of computer) 6. Material handling equipment: Introduction, design of Hooks, wire ropes, sheaves, pulley & Tackles system. TERM WORK/PRACTICALS: Practical shall consist of Design calculation of one major problem and five minor problems based on above syllabus. Term work shall consist of preparation of design report and drawing Sheets of A1 size including assembly and details of the major design problems.

MECHATRONICS: Introduction, scope of Mechatronics, Electronics for Mechanical engineers, Mechanical system for Electronics engineers, Mechatronics in manufacturing, role of Mechatronics in product development NUMERICAL CONTROL: Definition, Merits & demerits, NC, CNC, DNC, NC machine tools, classification, axes, types of control, component, their functions and features, tooling for NC machines, NC part programming. GROUP TECHNOLOGY: Introduction, part families, part classification and coding, machining cells, benefits of group technology. FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS (FMS): Introduction, component of FMS, Aspects of FMS, FMS material handling equipment, pallets and automatic guided vehicles, storage systems. INTRODUCITON TO ROBOTICS: Definition, terminology, robot elements and controls, programming & teaching robots, specification, application & safety aspects. COMPUTER AIDED PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT: Introduction, PPC fundamentals, problems with traditional PPC, use of computer in PPC such as CAPP, MRPI, MRPII,CAGC etc. Term work and practicals will be based on above syllabus.

Carburetors: Mixture requirement of S.I. engines, constructional details and working principle of a simple and automobile carburetors, compensating devices, engine warm-up, acceleration, intake manifold design, vapor lock, icing, petrol injection. Determination of air fuel ratio of simple carburetor, calculation of venturi and jet size, Petrol Injection: Direct and indirect injection, electronic fuel injection. Fuel Injection: Types of fuel injection systems, types of fuel pump, working principle, injectors, types of injectors. Formation of diesel spray, Atomization, penetration, dispersion, factors affecting spray characteristics. Requirements of fuel injection system, Delivery law, compressibility effect, resilience of components dribbling, fuel injection computation in C. I. Engines. Combustion: Combustion in S.I. engine, Ignition limit combustion phases, factors affecting ignition lag, flame propagation, Abnormal combustion, factors affecting it and its prevention. Knock evaluation. Requirements of a good combustion chamber, types of combustion chambers and their design. Magnet, battery and electronic ignition systems. Combustion in C.I. engines, Requirements of burning non volatile liquid fuel combustion phases, ignition lag and factors affecting it, diesel knock and its prevention. Types of combustion chambers, induction swirl, squish compression swirl, combustion swirl, methods of cold starting. Cooling & lubricating: Types of cooling system : Air cooling and water cooling of stationary and mobile engines, comparison and determination of quantity of heat rejected and quantity of water required. Function of a lubricating system, properties of lubricants, additives, types of lubricating systems, oil filters, crankcase ventilation. Supercharging and Scavenging: Objects of supercharging, supercharging of petrol and diesel engines, effect on performance, limits, methods of supercharging, turbo charging limitation of turbo charging. Testing and performance: 1. Measurement of performance parameters as per IS standard & heat balance sheet 2. Performance curves of S.I. and C.I. engines and Noise abatement Unconventional Engines: Working principles of Duel-fuel and Multi-fuel engines, stratified charge engine, sterling engine, Wankle engine, free piston engine, variable compression ratio engine. Air Pollution: Pollutants from petrol and diesel engines and their control.

High energy rate forming (HERF): High velocity forming, electro hydraulic forming, electro magnetic forming, explosive forming and vacuum forming. Micro manufacturing: Definition, techniques, machining, chemical etching process, types of lithography, thin film deposition, chemical and physical vapour deposition, micro plasma etching and welding. Advances in machining: Conceptualization of NC-DNC-CNC machining, axes identification, principles and tooling, part programming using do loop, canned cycles, VMC constructional features, high speed machining (HSM) Advances in unconventional machining: EDM, micro EDM, rotating electrode EDM, wire cut EDM, EDM drilling, abrasive water jet machining, electro beam machining, long beam machining, electro chemical grinding.
