Mine Dilution Mine Dilution Tutorials Question 1 Dilute a thin seam 0.3 metres thick and a thick seam 4 me thick using the following assumptions. 1. Loss 10 cms top and 5 cms at base 2. Gain 7 cms top and 3 cms at base 3. Assume coal has 10% ash & 1.4RD 4. Assume waste added has 80% ash & 2.2RD 5. Assume an area of 100m x 100m Report in a table the following. 4 metre seam 0.3 m seam Insitu tonnes ROM tonnes Insitu ash ROM ash Tonnes +/- Ash +/- Question 2 The exercise is a simple ROM process of taking insitu coal to a final reserve. 1. Using the data in the XLS build an insitu ash tonnage curve. 2. Dilute the seams using the following Top Loss 0.1m Bottom Loss = 0.07m Top Dilution = 0.05m Bottom Dilution = 0.05m Dilution is added at 1.8RD & 75% ash 10% 10%

3. Reject coal based on a minimum thickness 4. Reject coal on an ash cut off 5. Remove some coal for geological losses

Using the same XLS data estimate the coal tonnes you can ship at 12% ash. 2. Estimate the coal you can ship outside this specification and estimate the ash of this coal.

Question 2: Mine design A series of plots are provided at the end of this question. You will need to print these plots and use them in this assignment. You need to estimate the area of economic coal and then on paper design this mine and estimate the reserves. Calculate the break even strip ratio for an Indonesian coal deposit using the following assumptions AMOUNT ACTIVITY (USD) Sale price FOB $80 Barge freight & loading Port Charges Royalty of sale price Coal Handling costs/tonne Pit Recovery Overheads, marketing etc/tonne Coal Mining Costs/tonne Waste Mining Costs/bcm $4.50 $2.50 10% $2.5 100% $5.00 $5.75 $3.10

Use this ratio as a design limit and estimate the reserves in the pit. Assume a coal density of 1.3 g/cc. Use the circle of distances from drill holes to classify the reserves. Assume the mine has a 5 year life with 90% recovery of the insitu coal. This will give you an idea of the annual production. Design a mine layout using excavators, trucks and dozers. The overburden is hard sandstone and will need blasting. The coal can be blasted or ripped but will not free dig.
