The definition is: An ecosystem is the complex of interconnected living organisms inhabiting particular area or unit of space, together with their environment and all their interrelationships and relationships with the environment. An ecosystem is characterized by the description of populations; the abundance of individual species; interspecies relationships; activity of organisms;

physical and chemical characteristics of environment; flows of matter, energy, and information; and description of changes of these parameters with time. (S. A. Ostroumov, New Definitions of the Concepts and Terms Ecosystem and Biogeocenosis Doklady Biological Sciences 383 (2002): 141143. Translated from Doklady Akademii Nauk, 383, no. 4 (2002): 571573). Longstaff, Nicholas J. Armstrong, Keli A. Perrin, Whitney May Parker, Matthew Hidek (JUNE 2010; INSCT.SYR.EDU) COMMUNITY RESILIENCE: A FUNCTION OF RESOURCES AND ADAPTABILITY. Executive Summary: This white paper is intended for people who must help communities prepare for surprises. It assumes that no community can protect itself from every conceivable threat, but can increase its ability to be resilient or bounce back. The resilience approach described below is written in plain language and as culturally-neutral as possible in order to make it globally applicable across a broad range of communities. We recommend that communities assess their resources and adaptive capacity for a variety of community systems: ecological, economic, civil society, government, and infrastructure in order to find the balance that achieves the degree of resilience most appropriate for them. This approach also requires attention to the intersections and overlaps of these systems. The ideas presented here are consistent with the most current efforts at defining and assessing resilience, even if the terminology varies. The paper concludes by outlining the next steps for concept refinement and validation through case-based research and development of assessment tools for practitioners. http://insct.syr.edu/Projects/Resilience/Documents/Publications/Resilience%20Brief%206-8.pdf; http://www.noahraford.com/files/Resilience_Brief_6-8.pdf; Volume VI, No. 3: September 2010 http://www.hsaj.org/?fullarticle=6.3.6 SUGGESTED CITATION: Longstaff, Patricia H.; Armstrong, Nicholas J.; Perrin Keli A., Parker, Whitney May; Hidek, Matthew; Building Resilient Communities: A Preliminary Framework for Assessment. Also, a note on the book was published in: PROTECTING WATER QUALITY *BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SURFACTANTS*, a 2006 technical monograph, begins with a chapter entitled, "Anthropogenic Impacts and Synthetic Surfactants as Pollutants of Aquatic Ecosystems," a clear signal as to author S. Ostroumov's concerns and focus. The hardbound work is said to provide a foundation for exploration of how hazardous wastes are absorbed in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The text presents information on actions required for remediation and restoring water quality. Approaches to counteract "toxic effects of man made surfactants using biological methods, including phytoremediation," are also discussed in the 296-page work, as well as protection measures to improve water quality. - IPMnet NEWS, October/November 2006, Issue no. 150 (ISSN: 1523-7893): http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:jV5iVD86ExwJ:www.ipmnet.org/IPMNews/2006/news15 0.html+Ostroumov+S.&hl=ru&ct=clnk&cd=196 ** Reviews of the book: S.A.Ostroumov. Bibliogr. 26 refs. A new theory for the biomechanisms for water self-purification is presented in the S.A. Ostroumovs book Aquatic Organisms in Water Self-Purification and Biogenic Migration of Elements (2008, 200 p.). Hydrobionts (aquatic organisms) are actively involved in various processes leading to water purification. Almost all main groups of organisms are involved, which is discussed and analyzed in the paper. In the theory, the results of the author's experiments on the effects of various pollutants on aquatic organisms were used. The theory is an innovative basis for new ecological technologies to clean water and to upgrade its quality by using aquatic organisms. ** Other reviews: Kreneva S.V., Kocharyan A.G.
