AP Chemistry Mini-Labs For each experiment hypothesize as to why the results are as they are.

Your write-up should include your observations, equations for the reactions and your final conclusions. 1. To 5 mL of a 1 M MgSO4 solution, add 2 mL of a 1 M NH3 solution. To 5 mL of a 1 M MgSO4 solution add 10 mL of a 1 M NH4Cl solution, and then add 2 mL of a 1 M NH3 solution. Why did a precipitate form in one case and not in the other?

2. To 3 mL of a 0.1 M CaCl2 solution add 2 mL of a 0.5 M oxalic acid solution. Stir and centrifuge. Decant and
save the decantate. Put 10 mL of 0.1 M CaCl2 solution in a test tube. Add 6 mL of a 1 M NH3 solution to the liquid in the test tube and to the decantate. Why did a precipitate form only in the decantate?

3. Mix 1 mL of a 3 M acetic acid solution with 10 mL of a 0.5 M BaCL2 solution. Mix 1 mL of 3 M HCL solution
with another 10 mL portion of 0.5 M BaCl2 solution. To each mixture add 1 mL of a 0.5 M K2Cr2O7 solution and stir. Why did a precipitate form in one case and not in the other?

4. Mix 1 mL of 1 M HCl solution with 5 mL of 0.1 M K2Cr2O7 solution. To this mixture add 10 mL of a 0.5 M SnCl2
solution. Stir. Why did the liquid change color?

5. Put 5 mL of a 0.25 M MnSO4 solution in a large test tube. Add one mL of 3 M NaOH solution. Stir and note

the color of the precipitate. Stopper the test tube and shake it vigorously for several minutes. Why did the color of the precipitate change?

6. Put 10 mL portions of a 0.05 M NiCl2 solution in each of two test tubes. To one add 1 mL of 3 M NaOH
solution. To the other add 1 mL of NH3 solution. Why did a precipitate not form on both cases?

7. To 10 mL of a 1 M KBr solution, add 1 mL of 6 M H3PO4. To 10 mL of a 1 M KI solution add 1 mL of 5 M H3PO4.

Add 6 mL of 1 M Fe(NO3)3 solution to each mixture and stir. Why was there a difference in reaction? 8. Pass carbon dioxide into 10 mL of a 0.1 M lead acetate solution for several minutes. Similarly treat 10 mL of a 0.1 M lead nitrate solution. Why did a precipitate form more readily in one case than in the other?

9. To 10 mL of a 1 M KBr solution, add 1 mL of 6 M H3PO4. To 10 mL of a 1 M KI solution add 1 mL of 5 M H3PO4.

Add 6 mL of a 1 M Fe(NO3)3 solution to each mixture and stir. Why was there a difference in reaction?

10. To 5 mL of a 0.1 M CuSO4 solution add 0.5 mL of 15 M NH3 solution. Stir well and note color. Then add 15 mL
of 0.2 M KCN (caution!!!) solution, mix well. Why did the color disappear?

11. To 10 mL of 0.1 M AgNO3 solution add 1 drop conc. HNO3 solution. Then add NaCl solution to just ppt. all the
Ag+ as AgCl. Do not add excess NaCl. Add 7 M NH3 solution, dropwise until the ppt. is just redissolved. Do not add excess NH3. Then add a few drops of 2 M ZnSO4 solution. Why was the AgCl reprecipitated?
