CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Study

Communication can be said successful if there are similar meanings between the speaker and the receiver. So, language has an important role there. Noam Avram Chomsky, the one of the most leading theoretical linguist in history, has proclaimed that only humankind is blessed with language capacity (the Language Acquisition Device or LAD), an essentially unique quality. Chomsky states (in Jendra, 2010:2): When we study language, we are approaching what some might call the human essence, the distinctive qualities of mind that are so far as we know, unique to man. Human language is unique to man, because animals are also communicating each other but it is not identified as a language. Their language is limited for their instincts, such as for eating, drinking, attacking, etc, not like humans language used much more complex and continue to develop without the end. That is why Chomsky states that language is unique and called as human essence. In addition to that, one of some reasons why language is called unique and just belongs to humankinds because the language used by some people or members are different with others. For instance in professional area, when a group of people use jargon as Specific words exclusively used in particular fields (Jendra 2010:58), it must be used by some people who have the same profession

or group. Jendra states that sometimes the same words can indeed express different meanings when they are used in different fields (2010: 59). For example, he cites the word operation. In military, operation means soldiers attack to a targeted area of war, but in medical it means a certain act by hospital surgeons of helping a sick person. So, using the jargons in the conversation with people from different fields possibly cause misunderstanding. Moreover, some of literary works such as a novel use a lot of jargons. Sometimes the meaning of that jargon cannot be captured straightforward, and we need a dictionary to find their definitions. For instance, when reading a novel that contains psychological jargon, sometimes we find some words that sound familiar but we do not know their meaning exactly. However, people can learn in understanding jargon by themselves by having dictionaries or some other sources book that suitable with their study. For example, the writer consider to conducts a research on psychological jargon, because the writer wants to know more deeply about psychological jargon that found in the novel she had read, but, there are not many studies that have been conducted in this subject, and because of this circumstance, the writer supposes this is interesting to do research in this issue as a challenge to give more sources for this field.

1.2. Statements of the Problems

In this study, the writer is going to identify the usage of psychological jargon in novel Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho, and try to relate them

to the definitions from the books of psychology. So, this study answers the main questions: 1. What are the examples of psychological jargons that can be found in this novel? 2. What are their definitions according to book Psychology and Life (1979) written by Prof. Philip G Zimbardo? 3. How can the psychological jargon be related to the story of the novel?

1.3. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of my thesis is a study of psychological jargon, limited in Paulo Coelhos novel entitled Veronika Decides to Die English Edition (translated from the Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa) which was published in 2005 as international printing by Harper Torch in New York. In addition, jargons that are analyzed in this novel are limited in psychological jargon, especially in terms mental health/disorder.

1.4. Goal of the Study

For answering the statement of the problems above, this study has main goals, there are: 1. To identify the use of psychological jargons or the examples of psychological jargons that can be found in the novel.

2.

To explain the definitions of psychological

jargon use the book

Psychology and Life (1979) written by Prof. Philip G Zimbardo and some other books, then 3. To explain the relation between the definitions of psychological jargons from the sources books and the psychological jargons that found in the novel.

1.5. Function of the Study

This study has a function as data sources for sociolinguistics study for those who want to know more about jargon, especially psychological jargon. Hopefully, this study can help other students in using those jargon words in a literary work, (novel, for example) especially psychological jargon.
