An integrated modelling system for natural waters

TheTELEMAC system is developed by: Laboratoire National dHydraulique et Environnement (EDF-R&D). In collaboration with various research organisations and universities: . SHOM, CETMEF, IMFT and Sogreah in France, . HR Wallingford, Universities of Bangor, Bristol and Manchester in United Kingdom, . BAW and University of Hanover in Germany, . DELTARES in The Netherlands, . NRC Canadian Hydraulics Centre in Canada. It is distributed by consultancy firms specialised in hydraulics and the environment, with high-level skills in numerical modelling: . Sogreah (France) . NRC Canadian Hydraulics Centre (Canada) . HR Wallingford (United Kingdom)

TELEMAC

A TELEMAC users club is organised each year. Its purpose is: . to inform users of changes in the software and developments in progress . to share users experience by presenting studies. The software modules of the TELEMAC system are developed in accordance with the quality assurance procedures in force in the EDF Research and Development Division. Each module is supplied with full documentation: theoretical description, introductory manual and detailed user manual and a validation file. Training courses are offered for each module. Assistance in using the software is provided by numerical modelling specialists.

TELEMAC System, a complete set of modelling tools for environmental water studies

The TELEMAC system

is a powerful integrated modelling tool for unconfined flows: . Hydrodynamics . Sedimentology . Water quality . Waves . Groundwater flows Used in numerous studies throughout the world (over 170 installations at present), the TELEMAC system has become a reference in the field of hydraulics.

STRUCTURE OF THE SYSTEM THE STRONG POINTS

The various simulation modules of the TELEMAC system use powerful algorithms based on finite-element or finite-volume methods. Space is discretised into an unstructured 2D grid of triangular elements, so that the calculation grid can be refined locally in areas of interest. All the algorithms are contained in a single library common to all the calculation codes, thus making it easier to use the various simulation modules (it is easy to switch from one module to another) and, in particular, allowing the various modules to be coupled internally and externally. The pre- and post-processing tools are identical for each calculation code.

Pre-processing
w MATISSE (grid generator) w FUDAA-PREPRO (user interface) w STBTEL (adaptation to commercially available meshing programs)

Hydrodynamics

w TELEMAC-2D (unconfined 2D flows and tracer transport) w TELEMAC-3D (unconfined 3D flows and passive or active tracer transport) w Spartacus (unconfined Lagrangian 2D flows Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics)

Sedimentology
w SISYPHE (2D bed load and suspended sediment transport) w SEDI-3D (3D suspended sediment transport integrated in TELEMAC-3D)

Applications

(bridges, embankments, etc.)

(structures, jetties, breakwaters, etc.)

AN OPEN-ENDED, POWERFUL ENVIRONMENT

TELEMAC offers the user a set of sub-routines that are specific to each calculation code. These are all written in FORTRAN-90 and can easily be modified to meet specific user requirements: prescription of initial conditions or complex boundary conditions, introduction of new functions, coupling with other modelling systems. This system is constantly changing as new versions are issued at regular intervals. It runs on PCs as well as on mainframe computers, under Windows, Linux or Unix. A parallel version is available for use on multi-processor computers or clusters of workstations for certain modules (use of the MPI library, automatic domain breakdown operations).
