1.

Link bandwidth: 10, 000, 000, 000 bps Propagation speed: 0.66 * 3.00*108 m/s Length of physical link: 12, 533, 000 m (distance from NYC to Zimbabwe) Packet Length: 1, 500 bytes = 12, 000 bits = d/s = 12, 533, 000/197,863, 022 = 0.0633418 seconds = 10 links * 12, 000/10, 000, 000, 000 per link = 0.000012

Propagation delay Transmission delay seconds

Since the link bandwidth is significantly larger than the packet size, the will be no queuing delay. Also, assuming the nodal processing delay is negligible, the terms that dominate the total delay. So the total delay is approximately equal to the sum of the propagation and transmission delays. 2. Delay on plane: 12, 533, 000/245.833 = 50, 981.764 seconds For this to be faster, the length of the packet should be greater than 6.4*1012 bytes. Including a 3 hour delay, and approximately 1.5 hours from JFK to Columbia, the total delay is 65, 181.764 seconds. The packet length would have to be more than: 65181.764 10 9 bits Exercise 3: More on delays 1. Propagation delay dprop = m/s 2. Transmission time dtrans = L/R 3. End-to-end delay dend-to-end = dprop + dtrans = m/s + L/R 4. At time dtrans, the packet will have traveled (dtrans * m/s) (L 1), if there is no queuing delay, ie if L/R < 1. Wireshark Lab 1.
