TIME ADVERBS yet /still/ just/ already /so far

Yet (ya, an no) is generally used in negative sentences and questions.


It usually goes after the verb, object or complement. Yet means up to the time of speaking. It is usually used with the Present Perfect. - Used in negative sentences to say that something is not finished at the time of speaking: They have not decided yet. They havent finished the interview yet.

- Used in questions to ask if something is finished at the time of speaking: Has she arrived yet? Have you finished reading that book yet?

Still (todava, an) emphasizes that the action continues and is mainly
used in affirmative sentences and in questions. Still is normally placed after the verb to be but before other verbs. Daniel is still waiting for his girlfriend. (She hasnt arrived yet.) She still wants to go to Rome. Do you still go jogging early in the morning?

Just

(acabar de) is used in affirmative sentences to say that something happened or was completed a short time ago. Just usually goes with the Present Perfect and Past Perfect and is placed between the auxiliary and the main verb. I have just come across an old friend. The concert had just started when her cell phone rang. He has just called to say hell be late.

Already (ya) is used with perfect tenses in affirmative sentences or in


questions expecting an affirmative answer. It is used to express that something has happened in an unspecified time before now and that something has been completed sooner than expected. Already usually comes between have and the Past Participle. He has already gone home. Researchers have already discovered cures for many diseases. Have you already been to the new theatre?

Sometimes we use already in a question to express surprise that something has happened sooner than we expected it to. Has he already had his flu jab? The flu season hasnt begun yet.

So far

is used to say what has been done at this point in time, when there is still more to be done. We have done two units so far, this year. We still have five units to do.

(just/still) j) I could have finished painting this chair if I hadnt run out of paint. (still/already) k) I had bought my new motorcycle when he told me he wanted to sell his. (just/yet) l) We are reviewing the book we used last year. (still/already) m) I have driven seven miles. I still have three miles to drive. (yet/so far)
