Announcements made in lectures will be regarded as Sufficient notice of any course details Venues and times There are 4 lectures and 1 tutorial per week. Both lectures and tutorials are compulsory and a register will be taken. The lectures are in 6th period, Monday-Thursday, HOERIKWAGGO LT 2. Tutorial: Friday, 6th & 7th periods (PD HAHN F and M214). Text Book You will be provided with notes which are to be collected after your first lecture from the Quiet Room and Hotseat, below the Department of Statistical Sciences reception, PD Hahn Building, South Entrance. Syllabus The syllabus is divided into two sections, viz. distribution theory (36 lectures,) and regression (12 lectures). Tutorials Tutorials are offered on a Friday (in 6th and 7th periods). Tutorials must be done in an A4 exercise book or in an A4 lever arch file. First tutorial will be on Friday 29 July 2011 and during the first tutorial you will also write a test. Lab sessions There will be 3 compulsory lab sessions on regression in Scilab D from 15h00-16h00 on 5th, 12th, and 19th of October. Assignments and Tests (a) IDENTITY Bring your student Registration Card to ALL tests and exams FORMAL TESTS Test 1: Thursday 25th August 17h00-19h00 (Venue: RW JAMES B) Test 2: Wednesday 21st September 17h00-19h00 (Venue: RW JAMES B) OTHER TESTS You will be expected to write a series of impromptu or unannounced class tests during the course of the semester and the marks from these tests will count towards your class record. Impromptu tests will account for a maximum of 10% of the class record marks. ABSENCE Attendance at ALL tests is COMPULSORY. If you are unable to write a test on medical grounds you must obtain a VALID MEDICAL CERTIFICATE from a doctor. Failure to produce a valid medical certificate will be taken to mean that you were absent and automatically be given zero for the test. Medical certificates should be handed in to the Statistical Sciences Reception, P D Hahn Building, Room 5.34 South Entrance, within THREE DAYS of the test.

YEAR MARK The year mark will be calculated as follows: 45% TEST 1 + 45% TEST2+10% IMPROMPTU TESTS In order to obtain a DP, a year mark of 35% must be obtained. Furthermore the following criteria must be satisfied: (i) 35% in the tests, (ii) At least 85% of the lectures and tutorials must be attended.

EXAMINATION One 3-hour examination in November counts 70% and the year mark counts 30% toward the final mark. FINAL MARK = (30%) CLASS RECORD + (70%) EXAM The department reserves the right to replace supplementary examinations by oral or written reexaminations before final results are issued. The names of those eligible for such re-examination, and the time and place of the re-examination, will be posted on notice boards at a time and place to be announced. PLAGIARISM It is the University policy that any collaboration between students in course assignments and take-home tests must be acknowledged by the students in writing within the body of written work to which such collaboration applies. Name:Signature:..Date: If you are found cheating, you will get 0 for the work and will be charged before the University Court. Unless there are unusual circumstances the prosecution will ask for your expulsion. And even if you are not expelled, a conviction for cheating on your academic record is likely to limit your career opportunities. If you are preparing for a profession, you should know that a conviction for cheating in academic work may bar you from professional licensing temporarily or permanently.
