Head of Evaluation

KeyStone Search has been retained in the recruitment of a Head of Evaluation headquartered in Minnesota. The Head of Evaluation will build and lead the evaluation department for Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND The organizations founder, Margaret A. Cargill, was born September. 24, 1920, and was the granddaughter of William Cargill, co-founder of Cargill Inc. She spent most of her youth in the Midwest, where she developed her love of the outdoors. She attended Kemper Hall, an Episcopal high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin, creating a lifetime bond with the Episcopal Church that was the catalyst for much of her later philanthropy. She earned a degree in art education from the University of Minnesota and moved to Southern California, where she pursued her interest in arts and crafts. Margaret blossomed into a silent philanthropist. Much of her substantial philanthropy was conducted through Akaloa Resource Foundation and Anne Ray Charitable Trust, which she formed to allow her to give anonymously. She provided that the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation be created upon her death. She died August 1, 2006. The Philanthropies serves as the umbrella over three grantmaking organizations founded by Margaret A. Cargill, all with a common mission: To provide meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts, and the environment. Those three grantmaking organizations are: Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Anne Ray Charitable Trust Akaloa Resource Foundation The purpose of the grantmaking entities is to provide assistance and support in order to: Enhance the quality of life for children, families and seniors Prevent and relieve the suffering of children, families and seniors Preserve and promote the environment and the arts Encourage and support the humane treatment of animals

JOB PURPOSE The Head of Evaluation will support the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies by building and leading an evaluation function that will provide consultative services to the Program staff and Senior Leadership of all three grantmaking organizations. The department will provide evaluation subject matter expertise and consultation to inform decisions, strengthen initiatives and generate knowledge across the entire enterprise.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND COLLABORATION The Head of Evaluation will report to the President of Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies and serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Partner with senior leadership to build an effective evaluation function that supports the needs of MACP programs. Hire, manage, and develop the evaluation team to create integration of effective evaluation methodologies into programs of MACP. Collaborate, build and maintain internal and external relationships. Integrate monitoring and evaluation with all grantmaking strategies at MACP. Serve as the organizations primary evaluation subject matter expert; consult with trustees, senior leadership, program staff, and evaluation staff on all technical evaluation issues. Identify cross-organizational program issues that could benefit from evaluation engagement; initiate and lead new evaluation projects to inform decision making and improve grantmaking. Prepare analyses of grant effectiveness as requested by Foundation or Trustee Boards; coordinate any assessment or evaluation projects requested by Boards or senior leadership. Facilitate the knowledge transfer of industry best practices in evaluation across the organization and, where appropriate, to grantees. Represent MACP within the philanthropic and nonprofit evaluation and assessment community; build a professional network of evaluation resources for potential engagement by MACP. Identify, hire and manage consultants, as appropriate, to augment production of timely, high-quality deliverables that inform decision making. Manage groups, teams, staff and/or consultants around specific evaluation and data planning and implementation projects.

QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for the position of Head of Evaluation is a seasoned and collaborative leader with ten to fifteen years of relevant evaluation experience and an active curiosity and passion for the charitable purposes of MACP. The successful candidate will be a person of integrity with exemplary management skills, and a strong commitment to the mission, values, and goals of the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. Qualifications include a Bachelors degree and relevant Masters or advanced degree in program evaluation, social sciences or other related fields. Knowledge and experience with grantmaking and strategic philanthropy are key qualifications for the position. Other essential skills and experience include: 10-15 years of relevant evaluation experience, including a leadership role in evaluation, ideally in a foundation or major nonprofit organization. Demonstrated experience in implementing and managing a broad variety of qualitative and quantitative evaluation techniques. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in project management, evaluation methodology, and planning. Excellent leadership, management, and team building skills. Strategic thinker with analytical and planning skills and experience. Strong ability to organize and prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, and work independently as well as in a team environment. A high energy level, outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and tolerance for pressured work. High level of personal and professional integrity and ethics. Superior analytical and problem-solving skills; belief in the importance of evidence-based decision making. Excellent interpersonal communication skills including comfort with presenting to a variety of internal and external audiences.

Successful candidates will be collaborative, positive, and able to deal well with ambiguity. They will be adept at managing conflicts and able to respond to issues with clarity and diplomacy. They will inspire and foster trust and confidence in staff, executive management, and their colleagues. They will have a willingness to travel on an occasional basis, both domestically and internationally.
